What If I'm Lost?!

I'm like I'm leaving here with something I mean i'm from around the way i'm leaving with something Well, uh, I I guess I deep down i'm i'm feeling a little confused But it is what it ain't it's time to put another one in that living in a van down by the river Welcome in welcome in welcome in It's a good day. I feel it. I feel it in my bones what it is What it ain't Y'all already know It's time It's time To put another one in that pando app Bank, baby. What's going on? Everybody in pando land My name is trevor I have the amazing opportunity to be a part of a small church here in northeast florida with an amazing incredible all over the united states doc family, hopefully just Like you and here is our heart to help you champion every season of your life Even this one you're sitting in right now behind those walls, maybe in that detention center in that county jail Maybe you're in that work camp Maybe you're in prison wherever it might be I'm, genuinely honored to be able to help you champion this season and here's how we do that through jesus We are jesus people. I believe a thousand percent and that's all the percents Uh in jesus that he is the way the truth and the life that he is the hope of the world He is one that our heart does crave He is the one that brings light into our darkness and shows us what we were truly made for like that Is who jesus is to me? And I believe that when we have a relationship with him genuinely i'm not talking about cliche mess I'm, not talking about maybe something that someone in your family had i'm not throwing shade on that But i'm saying when we have a genuine relationship with him, man, we will champion every season of our life Doesn't mean it's easy doesn't mean it's great doesn't mean it's all peaches and cream

I think I sang that in a song in a uh episode earlier and I had to take that out. It got flagged. It got flagged Uh, but it was a good song back in the day Which is funny because I was singing that song in like seventh grade like I knew what it was Anyhow, what am I talking about? I don't know. I never do. Um, that was a legitimate ant on me Look at that look at that look at that. Oh, whoa. Look at that Get out of here satan, that was a huge bull ant son of a gun That was disgusting that sucker flew on my leg it flew on this walker I'm allergic to ants too. So not that anyone cares. Okay, that was different. Let's just get settled back in I got my prime back this week Got that prime that prime Oh, yeah I got that shorter Or because uh spider mike said I kept hitting stuff with this one Uh, here's the thing too in case you haven't seen one of the past episodes and you can always go back and watch them But we look at champion church like a big robo, right? I think you're still in chemo Chemotherapy, I just want to let you know we are praying for you and just believing for God To do what only he can do and work the miraculous for sure Also, there's a gentleman who just gave his life to Christ Let me pull up that name because I don't want to mess it up. He gave he just gave his life to Christ What is his name had a friend reach out Come on I want to say his name was Dalton Yes, Dalton gosh I was trying to find your last name you're in Nebraska anyhow Come on Trying to scroll up and read this here. Okay. Well Dalton, you're in Nebraska, you know who you are. So Dalton Dukes, that's what it is. That's what you know, why cuz I remember I thought I'm all about name Association Anyhow Dukes, I won't say what I was name associated with that But the point is this man Dalton you just gave your life to Christ here recently I don't know exactly how long ago it was But I want to say man's incredibly proud of you. What a great choice I'm probably a little biased But I think the best choice you could ever make in your entire life and you did that and they just keep walking it out Living it out What else what else is going on what else is going on I'm trying to think of anything else. Coming to see you in a couple weeks Potosi CI that stands for Correctional Institution Coming to see you out there in Missouri Put in for the time off at work and man now I'm all freaked out because I thought there was something else on my legs Something else on this Walker but coming out of Potosi in August I Think it's August 5th 6th and 7th. I will be out there And then we had a couple other chaplains reach out so I've said this if you want me to come to your Facility gonna need a few things. Number one having the chaplain on board is first and foremost. I have been approved in, Missouri so that one might be a little bit easier now that I am approved and I don't know if I should say the other ones that we are literally working on because I might go to two others while I'm In Missouri, I might hit one on Monday hit one. I don't know. I don't know when I'm gonna hit it. We'll see but We'll Yeah, I'm not gonna say exactly in case it doesn't go through just looking at some different places to make the most of my time While I am out there and then there's y'all that are right here in Florida with me man Like Trevor come down the street. Come on. Come on putting them CI. Where you at? You're 40 minutes away from my house, right? So I'm trying to work on getting cleared again by the state of Florida I have one thing that I cannot get through. I cannot find anybody to give me the training It's the Priya training that I need to do Can't find it. I've already done all my fingerprints and all that kind of stuff, but we have had a few people From different places in Florida reach out. I will absolutely if we can make especially in Florida, man That's just a quick little just drive over Jumping that old truck and just drive over and and and see you guys and just say what's up, man I absolutely love our DOC family and and if I could do that and help you all just let me know but you need here's What I'm gonna tell you what you need. You need the chaplain on board You need the administration on board and you need the warden on board without those three, man I don't see how it's gonna happen. I really don't I don't see how it's gonna happen But I thought I I need to do better put notes back in my phone today. We're gonna kind of last week We talked about why do I feel so powerless, right? Like if God is so good and he's so big and he gives me his spirit the very Holy Spirit of God

Why do I feel so powerless? I'm gonna kind of give you part two to that So last week while I'm looking for this last week, we talked about how? Obviously, I can't do two things at one time Obviously, I cannot yeah, I think I know I had the note about Randall Fowler praying for you, buddy That was the other note praying for you. I know you had some some complications. It was touch-and-go there for a minute So pray for you. Yeah, just got a couple of y'all on my heart bit this morning I think I already said James Shavir and just praying. I don't know buddy. I just woke up You're on my heart. Jakari Mills. You were on my heart I'm not doing shout outs or any of that kind of stuff. Just those people just woke up on my heart Yeah, I mean and don't be oh you didn't say my name you don't think about I do think I just can't get into listening names But genuinely I woke up this morning And it's what July 21st When I'm filming this in the black ox to man, I was telling somebody about you, okay I've got a step saying names. I'm not trying to get in trouble. I'm not trying doing that kind of stuff There's generally just people that are on my heart That I'm praying for and all that kind of stuff last week last week is what Hatcher? I was praying for so I was rocking that shirt rocking that that t-shirt. All right I feel like I'm gonna get in trouble saying all those things. I'm not trying to do shout outs. I promise you I'm not doing shout outs So let me move on. Let me move on to it. Here we go part two of why I feel so powerless Why if God is that big if God is that good? Why do I feel powerless? Oh, I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know or why do I feel like he is not speaking to me where I am? I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I don't know Why do I feel like maybe some of there's confusion? I'm asking him to lead me. We talk about how good he is to lead us, but where are you at, God? That's what we're talking about today.

I haven't given an update on the letters or messages with Securus or Smart Inmate. I'm only about three million behind. All right, so I honestly just had not had time. No, y'all don't want to hear that. Sometimes that's why I don't want to bring it up. Y'all, you don't want to have time. Like, I'm not going to go into all that. It is what it is, not super heavy. Maybe I'll get some time while I'm traveling in a couple of weeks. Maybe I'll have some time in the airports or whatever to jump on there and try to catch up. But at least the messages, letters, I don't know if I'm going to catch up on letters. So, all right, here we go. Part two of this, why I feel so powerless. This one is this, why do I feel like I'm kind of lost? Why do I feel like I'm kind of lost? Now, here's what we believe, that we have the exact same Holy Spirit that raised Christ Jesus from the dead dwelling within us. Now, we don't just believe that because somebody said that or I heard somebody said that. I believe that because that is what we see in scripture. From cover to cover in the Bible, we see that you and I, if you are a follower of Jesus, if you have accepted Jesus as your personal savior from your sin, your shame, and your shortcomings, if you have accepted him and made him the king of your life,

man, then you have the very Holy Spirit of God. Peter said this, here's what you should do when you're ready to turn your heart to God. Repent, repent of your sins, which means this, it's a change of mind that leads to a change of direction. Repentance, remember, is not just saying sorry. Repentance is not just sorrow or remorse. That is a part of it for sure, but repentance is an actually change of a mindset that is a change of direction. It's like I was doing my thing my way, but now I'm shifting that and I'm walking with Jesus as my king. And then he says to be baptized. This is all Acts 2, verse 38. He says to be baptized. Now, some of you, I had a gentleman that was at the church this past Sunday, watched me on Pando for the last several months, got out a couple weeks ago, was able to make it up to church. I want to say this as well, because I know Pando is here in the St. John's County Detention Center. If you get out, and that's not just St. John's County, anywhere. If you get out and you come to Champion, please say hello to me. And listen, just, we're a small church, right? Like just, I'm usually after service

standing right out front of those doors. Come say hello. Tell me you watched on Pando, right? So if you're planning on like, man, when I get out of here, I'm going to go see him. Just shake my hand and say, hey man, watched you on Pando. Thank you so much. Or hey, watched you on Pando. Your show sucks. Or watch, I'm just kidding. No, I mean, be honest, I guess. But it's just, I see so many that will come and then just kind of like a wave or whatever, come say hello to me. Please do, please do. But anyhow, what were we talking about? Oh, he was talking about that he was at, he was down there in Hamilton here, Hamilton CI here in Florida. And he had moved back up to St. Augustine or whatever. But he was talking about how he was able to get baptized in his prison, whatever. Now I understand that's not everywhere, right? Like everywhere, that is not the case. So you're like, well, if Acts chapter two, verse 38 says, repent and turn to God and be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins. What if I can't get baptized? Well, if it's not available,

then you're not gonna be able to do it. Now God's not like, well, I'm holding out until then. Baptism is a public declaration of an inward decision. So it's a public declaration of your faith. So yes, you should be baptized. 1,000% And that's all the percents you should be baptized, but but if you can't be baptized, that's fine you still just need to have a public decoration like people need to know you're a follower of Jesus and then at the end of that verse it says and you will receive The very Holy Spirit of God Jesus says we're gonna have the Holy Spirit in John 14 15 16 Jesus says in Luke 11 is a great gift from our Heavenly Father He would say it again in Acts chapter 1 verse 4 that is a good gift from our Heavenly Father Acts chapter 1 verse 8 Jesus would say you'll be Enabled with power the very power of God will be in and moving through you When you have the Holy Spirit of God He gives it to everyone who is a disciple of his now all of that being said we said last week with all of this Why does it feel like we're so powerless sometimes if we have the same spirit that raised Christ Jesus from the dead? Dwelling in our bodies and he will make our bodies come alive meaning we will actually be able to live That's Romans chapter 8 verses 9 through 11. Why does it feel like we're powerless? Well, we talked about that in the last episode. So if you haven't seen it go and watch it But then today here's what we're gonna have to kind of do the second part of this because I sold this spirit This is my own life like Lord. Sometimes. Why do I if I have your spirit the very Holy Spirit of God? Why do I still sometimes get aggravated I sometimes white God Why don't get off sometimes and fly off the the ledge Lord? Why does sometimes I speak against other people that are your children and that you love and I get Aggravated or frustrated or whatever? Why sometimes do God doesn't feel like I still sin And it's like this thing I've been dealing with forever like if you're that great and you're that good Why do I still deal with that sin or maybe it's it's this for me I've talked about this so much on this on this show Like Lord, if you're that good that great. Why do I still deal with depression?

Why do I still really have high high days or really low low days and I say this every time I do believe Jesus has given me the grace and the strength to get through all of it and I believe one day. I'll be completely healed of All of it, but like why? And here's what I'm as I'm seeking this out. Here's what I believe the Holy Spirit spoke to my heart Now was an audible voice. I just felt this and I wrote it down. He said you're trying to be led While not being honest about where you are You're trying to be led by not being honest about where you are One of the things we have said a lot here is if you're gonna champion every season You're gonna have to be led by the Spirit of God now again. That's not something We just flippantly come up with that's Galatians chapter 5 verse 25 That if we are we should be in step with the Spirit and following the Spirit's leading in every part of our life That's Galatians 5 25. We know John 14. Jesus would tell us that the Holy Spirit is going to guide us into all truth We know Romans chapter 8 verse 14 says those that are led by the Spirit of God They are the children of God So being led by God's Spirit is just a part of the Christian life is just part of the life of a disciple of Jesus Right, but but here's what I've learned if I'm not honest about where I am and What season I am in if I'm not honest about what I'm dealing with If I try to just put on this illusion of this facade to everybody including myself Of where I really am and then I'm seeking the Holy Spirit to lead me I'm gonna take what he's leading me in and try to apply it to where I think I am and not where I Really am Let me say like this downtown, St. Augustine is A lot of people love going downtown St. Augustine. Okay. It's a lot of cool things. There's a fort There's all that kind of stuff or whatever It's beautiful down there, especially Christmas time and it's night of lights beautiful that kind of stuff So let's just say you get out you get out you serve your time you get out and you're like, you know what man? I want to go downtown St. Augustine. I'm gonna actually champion church right now meets downtown St. Augustine until we move into our building And you're like hey, I'm gonna go to champion church and then after church

I'm gonna go down to the fort Then after the fort, I'm gonna go on st. George Street. Then after that, I'm gonna go this place that place downtown, whatever And let's just say you ask somebody you say hey, give me all the directions I need for that You get these directions Then you get out and you walk out and you're looking at these directions and you're looking around you like man that really doesn't look like the Bridge of Lions that looks like that bridge is like big and Blue almost and maybe look around you like man These buildings are a lot taller than what I thought downtown St. Augustine was like and man That's a Florida theater over there. And maybe you look around a little bit more and you're like wait, man That's that's Everbank Stadium where the Jaguars play and wait a minute. There's a Duval County Jail, like what what is going on and you're trying Take the directions that you had for st. Augustine downtown when really you are Jacksonville downtown They're kind of close there within 30 minutes 35 minutes But if you try to take the directions for downtown st. Augustine and apply them to downtown Jacksonville you are going to be completely lost and here's the point that I'm saying. I think sometimes you're like God Why do I feel so powerless? Why do I feel so lost and it's because this is me speaking I've done this so many times I'm not honest about where I am and I'm trying to take Directions and leading and apply it to a place where I actually am and I get confused because I'm like what is going on? I remember a couple years ago I was I mean by no means healthy But I wanted to lose some weight and I had kind of peaked about 24 pounds I lost but I wanted to lose 45 pounds and so I ended up connecting with this lady Who's a nutritionist and she's like Trevor. How many calories are you eating a day? And I said, well, I'm eating 2,200 calories a day, right and she's like, okay Well, how much you working out we go through all that kind of stuff. She's like, okay So the next week I come back actually gained weight She's like, did you did you do the exact plan that I gave you? I said out to a T did the plan She's like, okay. Are you sure you're eating 2,200 calories? I was like, I'm absolutely sure She's like, okay. Here's what I want you to do

I want you to write down everything you eating but still run the play run the plan then that I gave you I said, okay So next week again, I gained weight again I'm like what in the world like I was I was a few pounds light before we started this saying like what she's like Are you sure? You're only eating 2,200 calories. I'm like, absolutely. It's happened again three weeks in a row. I gained weight She's like Trevor something's wrong. You can't be running the play I gave you doing the plan I gave you taking the leading that I gave you and you're eating 2,200 calories and you're gaining weight That's literally physically impossible. She said here's what I want you to do start measuring out every bit of food that you have So that's what I started doing. Well, it turns out I Wasn't eating 2,200 calories. I was eating 3,700 calories so the plan and the play and the leading that I was trying to take that she had gave me Wasn't working because I wasn't honest about how much I was consuming again This can happen in our life with God. We're like God you said you would lead you said you would do this You said you would have this happen But why isn't it working is because we haven't been honest about where we really are Have you been honest about the condition of your heart with God? Have you been honest about things that maybe you're carrying around? Have you been honest about things that you have against other people that are well, there goes the or that are That that are deeply rooted people that you still are bothered by or have hatred or are you being honest? About the level that you have given God access to your heart Are you being honest about these things or are you living and I've done this are you living an illusion? Thinking you're here, but you're actually here and you're like Lord. I feel lost I'm trying to apply everything that you're saying He's like, yeah Cuz you're trying to apply it to an illusion of where you are to an illusion of what's going on Instead of who you really are the greatest starting point with Jesus is honesty About what is going on in your heart and in your mind. He's not afraid of it Sometimes we feel like I've got to get all my mess cleaned up I've got to get all the crap in my life cleaned up and at least if I can pretend that I've got it all cleaned Up if I can pretend oh, I've got everything together. I've got everything going. Okay. I'm good. I'm good. See I'm good now

I should be rewarded for that and you're trying to apply stuff when God's like listen I know what's really still going on in your heart. I know the fear that you're still battling I know the worry that you're still navigating through I know the bitterness that you still are holding on to and he's not saying all this stuff to throw stones at you or to Condemn you we said this in the last episode. There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus there is conviction and Conviction is that thing where God says? Hey, I'm I'm pointing this out not to expose you not to shame you Not not not to worry you not to make things worse. I'm Pulling the curtain back I'm revealing the roots of it if you will because I want to take that out of your life So you can actually see and taste the goodness of God in and through You wherever you are But you got to be honest You've got to be honest. There's this guy in the in the Bible called the rich young ruler This dude has everything He has everything what verse what verse is it in said Matthew 16 You should go read it. He goes to Jesus and he's like, what's the one thing I need to do to inherit, like have eternal life? Jesus lists a few things, and Jesus is honestly kind of coaching him up in this. Like Jesus knows what's going on. And the guy's like, I've done all that, Jesus. I've literally done all of that. And Jesus is like, yeah, here's the thing. You think I just need one more thing to do. I just need one box checked. I just need one, whatever. And Jesus is like, no, no, no.

What you really need is some, a new king sitting on the throne of your life. See, there's nothing wrong with having possessions. The issue is when the possessions have you. Please hear me, there's nothing wrong with being rich. The issue is when the richness has you. There's nothing wrong with having money, having nice things, as long as those nice things don't have you. I've heard it said like this. Can you give it away? Could you bless somebody with it? If you're like, I don't know about that, then it might have more of you than you want to admit. The problem was with this guy, his possessions and what he had, had him. He didn't own those things. They actually owned him. And he's like, just give me one more thing. He wasn't being honest. He wasn't being honest of loving the Lord with all of his heart, soul, mind, and strength. He was like, just tell me one more thing to do, and I'll do that. And Jesus is like, listen, it's not about something to do. It's about what is sitting on the throne of your life. And you might be saying, well, God, just tell me one more thing to do. Maybe if I can do one more thing, I'll get this sentence reduced.

If I can do one more thing, I can get back in front of the judge. If I can just do one more thing, this is what happened. If I can do one more thing, that family member will reach out. If I could just do one more thing, God, just tell me one more. What do you want me to do? You want me to fast? I'll just do one more thing. What do you want me to do, God? I'll go to Bible study if I can just do one more thing. God, what do you want me to do? I'll read the whole Bible. What do you want me to do? And none of that stuff is bad. But if he's not sitting on the throne of your life, it's not about one more thing, man. You're not being honest about who the king is of you. It's been well-documented on this show that Jesus did not come just to get you out of hell. He came to get heaven moving in and through you right now, even when it might feel like you're living in hell. Even when it feels like that cell block is equivalent to hell. Even when you're sitting in the hole in Potosi Correctional Institution. And that's the closest thing you feel like a human can feel to isolation. And some of you even say,

hey, you know what? I might even deserve this to be here. Lord, I just don't wanna go to hell. I just don't want that. No, listen, listen. There's a moment where you can actually receive heaven into your life and see it move through you, no matter where you are. That's what I love about the gospel of Jesus. It doesn't matter if you're in Ag-Seg, if you're in CM, if you're sitting in a work camp and you have more freedom than most inmates might. It doesn't matter if you are in Alaska or Kansas to Maine, to Florida, Georgia, Texas. It does not matter. If you're sitting on death row or you're within a week of walking out of that door and it's time to walk with Jesus for real, the question is this, is he the king of your life? Because if he is, the gospel cannot be stopped by walls. It can't be stopped by sentences. It can't be stopped of days and weeks and months and years. I'm not minimizing any of that. Please don't hear something I'm not saying. I'm not minimizing your situation. I can't even imagine what many of you have to go through. I'm not minimizing it. The gospel doesn't stop at that number that you're identified by. It doesn't stop there, man. It can reach you right there in the worst of the worst. It can reach you right there when you have put yourself in that position and you know, hey, I did this to me. It can reach you right there and tell you it doesn't have to be the end. You just have to be honest with him. You don't have to be honest with me. You don't have to be honest with anybody. I mean, you should be honest, but be honest with God. This is where I'm at. This is still what I'm carrying. This is what I'm still addicted to. This is what I'm still relying on as a crutch. This is what I'm still turning to. The rich young ruler thought he just needed one more thing. And God said, no, no, you need me as the king of your heart. There's a church in Revelation chapter three called the Church of Laodicea. Now, Laodicea was a city that was known for wealth, right? So if you were in that city, you were known for wealth. That city was also known for luxurious clothing, luxurious black wool to be specific. So I could, well, this is just a t-shirt from Walmart, but I would fit in with my outfit. Okay, and then the city was also known for creating a medicine that helped people's eyesight when their eyesight was going or maybe something Happened to their eyes, whatever it might be. So this city had a lot going on

But this is the city or this is the church that Jesus rebukes and says listen I'd rather you not be hot or cold and Then he says invite me back into your life What's the point of these people? They thought they had it all together Revelation chapter 3 says this I Know all the things you do that you're neither hot nor cold I wish that you were one of the other but since you're lukewarm neither hot or cold I will spit you out of my mouth. You say I'm rich. I have everything I want I don't need a thing and you don't realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and Neckin neckin is what he said. That's what Jesus said Here's how can you relate? I'm gonna say this kindly but if you're not honest sometimes about the pride that you have If you're not honest About I've got pride in my heart. If you're not honest and listen, man, I'm so it the times I'm like, well, that's not me I realize how much I have to battle my own ego and I've said on this show. I'm a I'm a nobody I'm truly a no one but sometimes my ego isn't being known by anyone My ego is I might feel better than some I might feel I'm better that person. I'm better than that and I know I'm not I know I've got a million and one issues. I could tell you about right now I am a 36 year old male. Okay, I mean, you know what? Sometimes I'll see what other preachers teachers pastors that kind of stuff preach and Maybe even how they live and I can get pride in my own heart Of like I'm not doing that right like I remember. Um, I Gotta be careful here It's probably probably a year and a half ago There's this pastor that I know I don't know him I know of him and he's in, Florida And he has a pretty okay-sized church. It's probably you know, 700 600 700 members or whatever and Him and I had an encounter years ago, and it wasn't good and I felt like he had talked down to me He was he was probably 40 at the time. I'm probably like 23 24. I felt like he talked down to me in In a group of people and and really kind of embarrassed me I felt a bear I don't think he was trying to embarrass me I think he was just shooting me straight But it's like I didn't have that relationship with him And so I always kind of had this little bit of like a like that ick towards him if that makes sense I'm sure he's a great dude. I know he's going to heaven I don't want to be his neighbor in heaven. But anyhow, the point is this I See somewhere out and about that. He's driving an incredibly luxurious car and I don't again I don't care what anyone drives. Okay again possessions It doesn't matter as long as the possessions don't have you and I don't I mean, I know nothing about this dude's heart whatsoever But I was like, are you kidding me? You're gonna buy that you're gonna spend that like like it was Incredibly wrong of me to judge. I didn't even judge that. He stole the money Like I know impact people like pastors are taking the money Okay, so a few of them did that and all of a sudden everybody does that okay, I'll tell you what have a nice warm Glasses shut your mouth. Listen to me. I've been there. in the heart of Central Africa lies a nation defined by its pivotal river basins and vast freshwater lakes Burundi is a landlocked equatorial nation where the Congo and Nile basins converge among towering peaks lush plateaus and deep rift valleys along its western frontier lies one of the world's oldest and longest freshwater lakes Lake Tanganyika the Rusizi River flows 116 kilometers through Central Africa forming a natural border among Rwanda Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo at its southern terminus the river splinters into a vast shallow Delta before emptying into Lake Tanganyika this specific ecosystem is home to a dense population of Nile crocodiles under normal conditions these reptiles are perfectly integrated apex predators the warmth of the lake the abundant prey and the lack of direct competition make it a perfect hunting ground for these formidable reptiles the young and mid-sized adults rely on agility they patrol the shallows feeding primarily on fish birds and small mammals that approach the water's edge to drink but the laws of biology dictate that as a crocodile grows its relationship with its environment must fundamentally change by the late 1980s a reign of terror began when reports of attacks on villagers along the shores of Lake Tanganyika and the Rusizi River in Burundi became increasingly common common. Many of these attacks were attributed to a giant Nile crocodile known locally as Gustav. Along the northern shores of Lake Tanganyika, thousands of humans depend on the water for daily survival. Fishing, washing clothes and bathing brought local villagers directly into Gustav's hunting grounds. To a 2,000 pound predator stripped of his agility, humans were not just a choice, they were the most accessible food source in the river. Gustav is a Nile crocodile, the second largest species of crocodilians after the saltwater crocodile. Even though Gustav has never been officially captured or weighed, scientists estimate his length to exceed six meters and his weight to be over one ton. In Africa's rivers, hippos are the undisputed rulers. They routinely bully,

bite and even kill normal Nile crocodiles. But Gustav inverted the laws of nature. His immense size turned the hippo's aggressive dominance into defensive alertness. To protect their calves, the pod would pack into a dense wall of flesh. The adult hippopotamus observes Gustav, not as a nuisance, but as a lethal, active threat. But Gustav does not become history's most notorious man-eater by biology alone. In 1993, a civil war erupted in Burundi between rival ethnic factions, triggering a dark decade of conflict that would claim approximately 300,000 human lives. Human bodies occasionally drifted down the current during the bloody years of the Burundian Civil War, washing up along the riverbanks and the delta marshes. For a massive predator weighing nearly one ton, these tragic casualties provided an easy source of carrion. Some researchers have suggested that the conflict may have contributed to Gustav's association with humans as a food source, conditioning him to view humans as accessible, vulnerable prey. Local legends claimed that Gustav was possessed by an evil spirit, fuelled by pure malice. This folklore was driven by a terrifying biological anomaly. Unlike normal crocodiles that kill strictly to eat, Gustav often struck humans, dragged them under, and left their bodies untouched on the riverbed. A French herpetologist named Patrice Fay first arrived in Burundi in 1978. He had spent years studying reptiles, but nothing prepared him for the scale of Gustav. In 1998, local commercial fishermen, who freedived in Lake Tanganyika to catch rare aquarium fish, approached Fay in dismay to report that a massive crocodile had recently taken one of their fellow diving colleagues. The fishermen explained that this was not a random animal. It was an extraordinarily large crocodile that kept appearing, vanishing for a few years, and then returning to the same areas to kill again. This event prompted Fay to take out a formal hunting and tracking license. He began traveling up and down the shores of the lake and the Rizizi River, carefully documenting attack locations, interviewing eyewitnesses, and logging dates, which officially launched his decade-long obsession with the reptile. When people began disappearing

along Lake Tanganyika during the 1990s, authorities initially blamed tribal warfare, rebel groups, or a serial killer. After two solid years of investigation, the bite patterns, dragging paths, and eyewitness descriptions pointed to a single, gigantic Nile crocodile. and some people say well yeah that's why he gave them the the teeth like he gave them or the instincts like he gave them all that kind of stuff but I'm trying to get a right angle y'all so I'm sorry I don't know where to go I don't know what to do but here's the only thing I'll say on that was this God's creation or God's intention for Great question, great way to thank, right? Like, and that's not gonna keep you out of heaven. It's not gonna keep you out of any of that kind of, sometimes it's good to just ask those questions. Like, what did that mean? Here's what I would look at. I think it's Isaiah 11. Maybe it's Isaiah 61. I'm getting in my head now. One of those two, it says that the lion and the lamb will lay down together. That's not happening right now. So that will happen after Jesus comes back, sets everything back in motion, the lion and the lamb. Now, I don't know if that's 100% just figurative or if that will actually happen. I don't know. And people can have their opinions. And again, that's okay. You can have an opinion on that stuff. That's what I love about it.

But I would say if that's what's happening after Jesus comes back, and I'm giving like a 30,000 foot view here, then I would say maybe the original intention wasn't violence. I don't know. I don't know. I think there's something to think about. And while we're thinking about it, let's watch some more violence. I'm just kidding. I shouldn't say that. Let's watch some more animals eating things. That's what we should do. He staked out the right location and caught his first glimpse of the massive bullet-scarred Titan gliding through the water. In 1998, Patrice Fay caught his first clear glimpse of Gustav's immense size. He initially attempted to shoot him. However, upon getting a clear look at the reptile, he was so struck by its massive prehistoric size, but he recognized the crocodile as one of the very last prehistoric marvels left on earth and felt it would be a tragedy to destroy it. Fay abandoned his rifle, deciding to protect the beast and dedicate himself to tracking, studying, and learning from it. Patrice Fay formally named the legendary Nile crocodile,

Gustav, in 2001. By 2004, the legend of Gustav had drawn the attention of scientists and filmmakers alike. Fay partnered with the National Geographic film crew to launch one of the most ambitious crocodile capture operations in modern history. The objective was radical. Capture the giant crocodile alive, relocate him to a secure enclosure, and save both the local villages and a remarkable reptile from certain destruction. To trap a prehistoric monster, the team had to build a monster of their own. They engineered a colossal steel cage measuring nearly 30 feet long and weighing a staggering one ton. It was a mobile fortress lined with heavy mesh and rigged with spring-loaded pressure plates designed to snap shut the microsecond a giant crossed the threshold. Deploying the trap was a logistical nightmare. Moving a ton of steel into the murky, unstable mud of the Roussizi River Delta required raw muscle and immense luck. The team anchored the cage securely to the riverbed, wired it with hidden night vision underwater cameras, and retreated to the banks. The trap was set. For days, the expedition was an agonizing game of patience. The team loaded the cage with a live goat as bait,

hoping the distress calls would draw Gustave from the deep. On the first few nights, the underwater cameras captured smaller, 10-foot Nile crocodiles swimming up to the bars, inspecting the trap, and swimming away. But the master of the Delta was nowhere to be seen. When Patrice Fay and his crew returned the next morning, they found a chaotic scene. The heavy steel cage had been dragged halfway into the deep water and was found partially submerged. The spring-loaded trap doors had been triggered, but the goat was completely gone. Patrice believes that the intense storm caused the river to flash flood and rise rapidly. The powerful currents dragged the heavy cage down the muddy bank, causing the mechanisms to fail and allowing the goat to be washed away or drown. When the National Geographic expedition team packed up their cameras and left Burundi, they left behind a population still paralyzed by fear. The locals near Lake Tanganyika were left to wonder when Gustave would strike again. But the truth is, crocodiles never kill for fun. Like all cold-blooded reptiles, crocodiles have an incredibly slow metabolism and have very low daily food requirements. A Nile crocodile. A crocodile of Gustav's massive size can survive for several months on a single, substantial meal to sustain its hunger. Biologists believe many of Gustav's attacks were instinctual, defensive strikes. He would neutralize the human intruder with a crushing bite, drown them, and abandon the carcass, simply because he wasn't hungry.

For a one-ton bull nile crocodile, his territory is his kingdom. Anyone entering the water, whether washing clothes, fishing, or bathing, is viewed as a direct territorial threat. While local legends and early reports often claim the massive reptile killed between 200 and 300 people, Patrice Fay estimates Gustav might have killed far fewer than commonly believed. Fay spent 11 consecutive years tracking the reptile's movements across the Ruzizi River, documenting and verifying attacks on the ground, and tracing them back to Gustav's known hunting areas. Based on his research, he concluded that the higher figures were heavily embellished, and that the true number of attacks was likely closer to 60. A nile crocodile typically lives between 60 and 70 years in the wild. Gustav would today be in his 80s, a biological threshold where time finally catches up to even the largest crocodilians. Although crocodiles continue growing throughout much of their lives, their energy demands eventually become so great that age, injury, and declining hunting success begin to take their toll. The last widely reported sighting of Gustav occurred in June 2015, when a local resident claimed to have seen him dragging an adult buffalo carcass into the Ruzizi River. In 2019, rumours circulated that the giant crocodile had finally been killed, but due to a lack of photographic evidence and physical remains, the report went unverified. Because no carcass has ever been officially documented, no hunter has ever claimed his bounty, and no skeleton has ever washed ashore, science cannot definitively pronounce him dead. Whether Gustav still lurks beneath the murky currents of the Ruzizi River, or whether he has long since vanished into the depths of history, may never be known. Yet, regardless of his fate, Gustav achieved something few animals ever do. He transformed from a living predator into an immortal legend, an evolutionary marvel that defied the animal kingdom.
