What does it actually mean to have faith in God?

Hebrews 11:1 tells us that “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” But biblical faith is more than positive thinking, hoping something works out, or convincing yourself everything will be okay. Faith is relational. It is trusting that God is who He says He is, that He is faithful to His Word, and that what He has promised is substantial enough to change the way we live today.

In this message, Trevor walks through Hebrews 10 and 11 to show why the writer tells believers not to shrink back when life becomes difficult. We look at what “substance” and “evidence” mean, why God’s past faithfulness gives us confidence for the present, and how people like Noah, Abraham, and Sarah acted on what God said before they could see the outcome. Faith lets the promises of God affect our decisions, our prayers, and our actions even while we are still waiting.

If you are struggling to trust God because you cannot see what He is doing, this message is for you. God is not a man that He should lie (Numbers 23:19). If you need wisdom, you can ask Him for it (James 1:5). Jesus teaches us to pray believing that God hears us (Mark 11:24), and Philippians 4:6 reminds us to bring our requests to God with thanksgiving. And if your faith feels weak right now, Romans 10:17 tells us that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Get to know Jesus. Stay in His Word. Remember His faithfulness. Do not shrink back.
