Life has a way of testing us, whether we are ready or not. Some tests come through hardship, others through temptation, relationships, or even answered prayers. But here is something important to understand: Not every test comes from God, and not every difficult season means God is testing you.

In Hebrews 11:17–19, we discover how Abraham faced an incredible test of faith. His story teaches us something powerful about trusting God and applying what we have learned about His faithfulness to whatever we are facing today.

In this teaching, Trevor breaks down six different tests of life, where they come from, and how we can walk through each one with faith in Jesus.

The 6 Tests of Life

1. The Test of TrialsJames 1:2–4 (NIV)

Suffering, sickness, disappointment, and hardships are realities of living in a broken world. These difficulties do not mean God is causing them, but He can use what we are facing to develop perseverance and strengthen our faith.

How to pass: Lean into God's strength when you feel weak, trusting Him to carry you through what you cannot handle on your own.

2. The Test of Spiritual Attacks1 Peter 5:8–9 (NLT) | Ephesians 6:10–18

Spiritual opposition is real, and the enemy wants to discourage, distract, and destroy our faith. But we are not defenseless, and darkness does not have the final word.

How to pass: Stand firm in your faith, put on the armor of God, and fight back spiritually through God's Word and worship.

3. The Test of TemptationJames 1:12–17 (NLT) | 1 Corinthians 10:13 (NLT)

Temptation comes in many forms, including addiction, old habits, destructive desires, and opportunities to compromise. God is never the source of temptation, and He promises to provide a way out.

How to pass: Trust that God's ways are best and choose the way out He provides rather than giving in to temptation.

4. The Test of SuccessDeuteronomy 8:10–14 (NLT)

Sometimes the greatest test comes after the prayer has been answered. Whether it is freedom, a new opportunity, restored relationships, or a season of blessing, will we continue depending on Jesus when life gets better?

How to pass: Continue pursuing and depending on God just as much after the answered prayer as you did while waiting for it.

5. The Test of Friendships and Relationships

Relationships can test our patience, forgiveness, character, and willingness to love others. How do we treat people when they disappoint us, hurt us, or refuse to extend the same kindness we show them?

How to pass: Treat people the way God treats you, extending grace, forgiveness, and honor even when they do not reciprocate.

6. The Tests from GodHebrews 11:17–19 (NLT) | Genesis 22

Abraham faced a genuine test from God, but he did not face it without a history of God's faithfulness. He considered everything he had learned about God's character, power, and promises and applied those truths to the situation in front of him.

How to pass: Remember what God has already shown you about His faithfulness, apply those truths to what you are facing today, and continue trusting Him.

What Have You Learned About God?

The purpose of a test is to discover, reveal, and clarify what you have already learned. Whatever test you are facing today, remember that Jesus is faithful, He is strong where you are weak, and you do not have to walk through this season alone.

Whether you are behind prison walls, preparing for your next chapter, or rebuilding your life on the outside, the question remains the same:

What have you learned about God, and how can you apply it to what you are facing right now?
