Jesus vs. Everybody

But anyhow, going to school today, this was actually something that I was going to put into our discipleship course that we are putting together right now that will be here on the Pando app this month. I don't know exactly when it will be out, but because like I told you in the past episodes, I've had to kind of write some stuff to go with that. Didn't expect that. I was just going to put up some videos. And we were going to teach this one of Jesus versus everybody. Jesus versus other religions. But man, I just really felt in my heart like, no, we're going to make this a main episode this week. But I will say it's a little bit different than past ones because I get kind of granular in it and incredibly scholastic. Like you're going to think, I should have wore, man, I didn't think about it to this moment. I should have wore a suit for this.

I should have wore a suit for this one, like that substitute teacher. I should have had like a shirt with a top. Man, I dropped the ball on that. I just had that idea. But and several of you have said, hey, I've heard about the St. Augustine Alligator Farm or when you visited St. Augustine, you went to the alligator farm or if you're here locally, you've went to the alligator farm and I've asked, hey, would you go in there? So my son, speaking of school, I let him skip school yesterday and we went down to alligator farm, walked through it. And so we took some videos for you as well. I don't think it's that exciting, but there are a ton of alligators. So I've also put the video in here today of my son hunting an alligator. Last spring, he got his grades up. We're talking a lot about school, I didn't realize it. We got his grades up to A's and B's. And I said, listen, if you get your grades up, I'll take you hog hunting and gator hunting. So that's what we did last year. So I'll put the little clips of that in here. Also, we're gonna put a whole bunch of alligator stuff in because I don't know if you do the alligator farm show my son hunting alligators

Hey, I'll run with you this week Like I'm trying to keep my word as much as I can Why do I say all that because I've told you guys from the beginning if you write me I will personally read it and I Will write you back now. Here's what is happening in my real life. It is spring when I'm filming this I don't know when you're watching this when I'm filming. This is the first week of March My work schedule is is going from here to here Why does that matter to you guys because right now I'm about six weeks behind so the moment you write me Mail it in I get it read it again. I'm reading them and responding to them. It's about six weeks That's probably gonna grow a little bit and I just want to be straight up with you guys I got I'm not trying to you know BS or any of that kind of stuff. I'm just being straight up That's how long it's gonna take me right now because work is is really you know It's time change weekend and just means work is about to get incredibly more busy for me Which is fine because I enjoy paying my bills, right? but it will take a little bit less on my time to respond to letters still doing this right here on my lunch break if

You're missing the exciting things around So she said hey, listen, I want you to do something. It's you know, look for something Exciting so I leave school that day and boy. I am on the look. I mean, I'm like friggin inspector Inspector friggin gadget out there and I'm looking for something looking for something. Nothing's happening. Nothing's happening I'm looking everywhere the Sun's going down I'm getting a little nervous because I I've got to find something I've got to find Something is I got to pass this class next morning. I wake up a little bit early. I see the Sun coming up I'm looking I'm looking nothing. I get dressed. I go to the bus stop and about that time

Here comes my little doggie Rhett Rhett comes running across the road. I don't know what he saw. Maybe he was chasing a squirrel Maybe he was just running away from our home I don't really know but as he's coming running across the road here comes my school bus and I can see it happening like I'm like, oh my gosh, this is about to be wham and the school bus hits Rhett and I'm like, this is gonna be tough, but Praise God. I got something for class. So I jump on that bus. I said frick that dog. I jump on that bus I'll sit down in the bus seat. I am ready to go. We get to school. We walk in the teacher says All right class. I said, oh, please please please please pick me. Please. I saw something eventful. Please pick me And she said, okay, okay, mr. Hersey Go right ahead. I said while standing at the bus stop and I was looking for something. I was looking for something I was inspector freaking gadget and then all of a sudden I see my dog come running across the road and my school bus It was coming down the road. Maybe a little fast Maybe she was maybe maybe that the school bus driver was speeding a little bit But that school bus driver hit Rhett, right? square in the Teacher says Trevor you cannot use that type of language You we do not say that word. We say rectum. I go ha ha near kilting I Don't feel like that was an appropriate joke as soon as I came out of my mouth, I'm sorry And y'all probably heard that joke. That's an old joke. I ain't even smelling alcohol, you know, anyhow, what am I talking about? Let's get to it a little scholastic and by little I mean very much so but we're talking about Jesus versus everybody Jesus versus Islam Jesus versus Buddhism Jesus versus Odin ism Jesus versus atheism We are going into it today, and I'm so glad you're here with us and we're going to alligator farm you'll see my son kill an alligator not out and not at the alligator farm not related instances and Yeah, let's jump. Oh and of course shout outs, you know, I got them shout outs. Come on. Let's go

All right, here we go There's something about incarceration that just strips away pretend spirituality That's the only way I know how to put it that outside those walls that you're sitting and people often approach religion in the same way they approach a gym membership or a Favorite restaurant and it becomes something that just fits their personality, right something that aligns with their schedule if we were being honest There's something that feels Comfortable or familiar and in that world belief can kind of feel like a lifestyle preference, right? like one option among many that helps a person feel centered or Fulfilled but you know this inside prison belief becomes something else entirely like when a man wakes up in a concrete room and Realizes that the life he once had is no longer available to him like religion stops being a theory it stops being abstract It stops just being a conversation about Philosophy or morality it becomes a question more about survival and identity And whether it's human life can actually for real change now Nobody joins a religion in prison because it looks impressive right and nobody wakes up in a cell and thinks The spirituality would improve their public reputation right their brand people reach for belief Because the questions get louder when everything else seems to go quiet. Like I'm sure you have Experienced those questions man They tend to kind of circle around the same things like guilt that refuses to stay buried regret That comes back over and over and over again memories that cannot be edited or rewritten This deep human need to believe that a life can become something different than what it has Been now if we're going to talk honestly about Jesus compared to other religions Inside the the DOC of where you're at right now the conversation listen to me I want you to hear my heart is gonna be with respect and the growth of different belief Systems in prison did not just happen because people were bored, right? It happened because those systems speak to real human needs Islam for example has grown significantly inside a correctional environments For reasons that absolutely make sense when you look at them closely, right? Like the structure of daily prayer creates a rhythm in a world that man often feels chaotic and the moral expectations are clear Discipline becomes this like pathway to dignity and for people who grew up in

Unstable environments a life organ around organized around submission to God can feel Stabilizing and almost in a way like healing right now other belief systems Appear for equally understandable reasons, right? So like this like an onanism or a warrior based tradition appeal to the deep human desire for strength and honor In an environment where reputation and physical presence can shape daily life You know this I believe systems that emphasize courage and loyalty and brotherhood the man that can feel protective Like identity becomes rooted in resilience and resilience It becomes a way of surviving difficult, difficult, difficult circumstances, right? Like other spiritual parts or paths, man, they, they a lot, like they, they hit something different, right? They're, they're personal rituals. And sometimes they give you this sense of like ownership to yourself or finding something to yourself, like saying something or practicing something that belongs to you. Can it like, I think what I'm trying to say is it restores a measure of dignity in that environment that you're in right now, that tries to remove dignity. And at the same time, many people move in the complete opposite direction and abandoned belief entirely, right? Like atheism often grows from disappointment or disillusionment. Some have witnessed the true religious hypocrisy and others have prayed prayers that seem to disappear into silence and never left the room and choosing not to believe sometimes can feel like protecting yourself from further disappointment. Now, none of these responses are foolish. Hear me, they are all human, but honestly, eventually, man, you've got to look at a deeper question. Do these belief systems simply help a person survive in prison or do they actually address what prison exposes? Because prison exposes more than weakness.

It exposes regret, shame, and the quiet weight of memories that can not be, that can't be undone. A man can feel the be like the strongest person in your pod or in your dorm and still find yourself replaying the worst moment in your life over and over and over again. A woman can follow the rule book in the block and maintain respect among her peers while carrying the emptiness that discipline alone cannot fix. A person can belong to the tightest brotherhood in the unit and still feel profoundly alone when it's all said and done. And that's where I think I'm trying to communicate the real comparison begins between these religious beliefs. Right now, I want to say this. When scholars study the world's religions, they often notice a similar pattern appearing again and again. You might've heard this, that most belief systems move in one direction upward. The assumption behind many religions is that humans beings must be, uh, they must climb towards God. So like in Islam, the central idea is submission to Allah through obedience to the revealed law in the Quran, right? Like faithful prayer, disciplined living and moral obedience becomes the pathway. That's what I'm trying to get to, which a person honors God and hopes to stand approved before him and Buddhism. The path is focused on enlightenment, right? So through meditation, self-discipline and detached from desire, a person attempts to do that climb that I just said upward to escape suffering and eventually transcend the cycle that binds humanity to pain and Hindu traditions. The soul progresses through cycles of karma and rebirth and gradually purifying itself until this liberation of climbing is achieved and even secular humanism, man, it follows a similar pattern in a different form. Instead of climbing toward God, humanity is asked to climb toward moral progress

through education and reasoning and self-improvement and the burden of meaning rests entirely on the humans shoulders. Now, each of these approaches contain insight about human behavior and moral life. Yet we have to realize they share a common direction. Humans have to move upward. Christianity begins with the opposite movement. Instead of describing humanity climbing towards God, the Christian story describes God coming down to us, right? God moving to us. And this is the claim that makes Christianity different at the center is this. This says that it is unlike any other religious claim in human history that God entered human history as a man named Jesus. That is the biggest different, not symbolically, not metaphorically, but historically Jesus lived. We know this in first century, Judah, Judea, excuse me, under Roman Roman rule. His existence is not only recorded in the new Testament, but also acknowledged by non-Christian historians, right? Like Josephus and I think it's called Pliny the younger or whatever. Anyhow, the point is all whom wrote about Jesus or the early Christians who worshiped him. Like that is a historical fact. So from the beginning, Christians did not just simply describe Jesus as a wise teacher or a moral guide. They worshiped him. They believed that in Jesus, God himself had stepped into the human story. Like that is so different than all the others that you climb. He came to us and that claim forces a decision. Either Jesus misunderstood his own identity or his followers misunderstood. him completely. Or the most surprising is the possibility that is actually true, right?

Like God walked among us and he entered into human suffering. Like, could that really be true? Like the way Jesus enters the story is just as surprising as the claim itself. He does not arrive as like a political conqueror or a military leader. He is born into a poor family and grows up working as a carpenter. When he begins teaching, he gathers fishermen and tax collectors and just ordinary people, not kings and generals or even warriors. So instead of conquering Rome, watch this, he allows Rome to execute him. Like what? Crucifixion was the most humiliating form of execution in the Roman empire. We have to know that. Victims were nailed to a wooden beam and they were left exposed naked in public view for hours while crowds passed by. The purpose was not only death, it was humiliation. It was Rome's way of dealing with that person that they had lost to the empire. So if someone was inventing a religion to gain influence, they would not build the story around the public execution of their leader like Christianity does. They build it around victory. But Christianity, it builds a story around sacrifice and the cross reveals something profound about the character of God. It shows a God who does not remain distant from human suffering. Instead, he steps directly into betrayal and to injustice, violence, and shame. And this is the question. The most controversial claim of Christianity is not that Jesus taught love or forgiveness. It's that he rose from the dead. This claim, listen, it appears extremely early on in Christian history. One of the earliest Christian writings, the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 13 describes Jesus appearing to more than 500 people after his death that he had rose from the dead. Paul even tells his readers that many of these witnesses were still alive at this time. Essentially like, hey, go ask them. Go ask them what they saw. And historians who study the rise of Christianity generally agree on several foundational facts. Jesus was executed by crucifixion. His tomb was reported empty and large numbers of people became convinced that they had seen him alive again. And those followers, here's even more, they were willing to face imprisonment and persecution and execution rather than just denying like, no, we didn't see it. Like they were willing to do all of that. The historian N.T. Wright has pointed that first century Jews had very specific expectations about the resurrection. This is important because they believe the resurrection would happen to everyone at the end of history, not to one individual in the middle of it. No, no, no. Yet suddenly a group of Jews began proclaiming that Jesus had already risen and that this event changed everything. Like something dramatic forced them to rethink their entire worldview. Lee Strobel and others, investigative writers have pointed to the

transformation of the disciples themselves. When you think about it, like before the crucifixion, man, they're depicted as fearful and uncertain. And then afterwards they're boldly proclaiming the resurrection in the very city Jesus had just been executed in. Like people may die for something they believe is true, but very few are willing to suffer persecution for something that they know they made up. So like these resurrection claims, they demand an explanation. Like what the disciple says demand an explanation. Now, let me shift a little bit because inside those walls where you're right now, guilt feels intensely personal. And every human being eventually has to confront the reality of guilt. Everyone does. Not simply mistakes that can be forgotten, but moments that can't be undone. Moments that remain part of a person's story, no matter how much time passes. That's the guilt I'm talking about. Now, most religions, they offer ways to like balance the scales, if you will, through obedience and discipline or spiritual practices, a person slowly attempts to repair what has been broken. But Christianity again, makes a shocking claim. It says forgiveness cannot be earned. It must be given. Like the message of the cross is that God absorbs the cost of human wrongdoing himself. Instead of demanding that humanity repair the damage it has caused, God steps forward and he carries the burden. Like what? That is why Jesus spent so much time with people that society rejected. The tax collectors, the prostitutes, the criminals, the outcasts. This was who Jesus was around. He wasn't drawn to people who believed that they had everything together. Literally not at all. He was drawn to people who knew they needed mercy. And again, This, let me say it like this, most religions attempt to help people become better versions of themselves. Christianity promises something so much more radical, transformation. The New Testament describes transformation as becoming a new creation. The idea is not that a person slowly earns a better identity, but that God begins reshaping the heart from the inside out. Grace does not erase responsibility or pretend that the wrong never happened. Instead though, it absorbs the cost of justice and offers mercy in its place. And because of that mercy, a person is no longer defined by the worst moment of their life for all of eternity. Their identity is no longer locked inside the label that past attachments and decisions

have been given to them. Their story begins to be shaped by the love of the one who forgave them for everything. I want you to think about this. Let me shift a little bit again. I just want to hit on guilt. Let me shift on this. There's one more detail about the story of Jesus that becomes especially powerful when you consider from where you're sitting. Okay. So the man who was supposed to die that day where Jesus died on the cross, it wasn't Jesus. That cross was built for Barabbas and Barabbas was a violent criminal who had participated in rebellion against Rome and according to the gospels, he had committed acts of violence that placed him squarely under the authority of Roman execution. The cross was made for Barabbas and Jesus. He done none of those things like he was guilty. Jesus was not yet. The crowd asked which man should be released and I don't know if you know the story. They shouted for Barabbas like the guilty man ends up walking out of jail like free and the innocent man walked toward the cross and for centuries, Christians have recognized the meaning inside that moment that is so powerful. Barabbas represents every one of us. The guilty man walks out of the prison. The innocent man takes his place. That is Christianity. We see the story of Jesus going to the cross and everything seems to kind of be hand in hand and then there's this one character that seems to interrupt the narrative, his name's Barabbas. We don't even know much about him except that he's a murderer, a leader of an insurrection, a rebel and why he's even mentioned, sometimes I'm not so sure. It's like what, let's, this is about Jesus going to the cross.

So in this moment, Pilate thinks I hold the destinies of these two men in my hand. I know the Jews have a tradition that on a holy day, I will release one of the prisoners on death row. Pilate stands on this audacious stage who now presents Jesus, son of the living God versus Barabbas, the thug and rebel. He says, all right, who do you want? This is blasphemy. This is, this has gone too far. There's no comparison. This is a rightful prisoner, a man who should be on death row. He's a rebel against Rome. He leads a rebellion. He murders people. He's a bad man. He's a thug and he's a crook. He deserves the chains and he deserves the crucifixion. Jesus? What has he done but heal, restore, deliver, set free, open blind eyes, open deaf ears, heal the lame and the leper? What has Jesus done? Who do you want? We want Barabbas. Yeah. People say, give us Barabbas. The Roman soldiers come up and they put the key in and they unlock Barabbas from his chains and shackles. And he walks down the platform, welcomed by all of his thug friends. Yeah. The people love me. Yeah.

That's right. I don't even know who this Jesus guy is. But all I know is my people love me. There seems to be no conscience in Barabbas. There's no record of him turning to Jesus and saying, I owe you everything now for you have set me free. No, I don't see any of that in Barabbas. And God knew that. Jesus stood there silent for he knew the will of the father. He said, it's fine father, let him have Barabbas for Jesus knew that the father would have to treat Jesus like Barabbas so he could treat Barabbas like Jesus. Barabbas thought it was the people that set him free. No, no, no, no. It was the love. of a heavenly father When I look at the story I realized who Barabbas really is That's me That's you That's us while we were still sinners Christ died for us That is Jesus the same pattern appears again only a few hours later from this moment Jesus is hanging on the cross and he's in between two criminals One of them being executed begins to speaking and he says this man does not pretend to be innocent He doesn't argue his case or try to explain his past he just starts talking right and he simply acknowledges that hey my decisions brought me to this moment like He owns it essentially and then he looks at Jesus and asked Jesus to remember him and Jesus responds with mercy like that Moment reveals the heart of Christianity more clear than than almost anything else in Scripture I

You know my luck You might not be with me Like God does not wait for perfect people to come to him he moves toward people We don't have to ascend upward to God He came to us for those who need grace just like you and I and if you're sitting there today That story probably doesn't feel that that distant in history But it's an invitation to you man because the same Jesus who walked into a world full of violence guilt Betrayal and injustice it's still stepping into human lives your life right now And he doesn't begin saying hey come to me instead He meets you right where you are and if the resurrection is true get this Then the story of your life is not finished either Because the man who walked out of the tomb still has a habit of walking into the darkest places on earth and bringing new life To people who thought their story had already reached its end that is Christianity That is Jesus now before we wrap this up Since we called this Jesus first everybody. Let's let's take a moment and just be very clear about some things okay, I Title did this yeah a little bit is clickbait But a lot of you have had these questions, and I did not choose that that title by accident the goal was never I said this the beginning to mock other religions or insult people who believe differently every human being is searching for meaning forgiveness Identity and hope and many belief systems again attempt to answer those questions in sincere ways like I'm not throwing stones at all But but here's what I do believe sincerity and truth are not always the same thing Not not always the same thing if Jesus really is who he claimed to be then eventually the comparison has to be made Like not loudly definitely not arrogantly just honestly So let me slow this down and say this clearly when you place Jesus beside other major religious systems in the world the differences become impossible to ignore Jesus first Islam Islam teaches that Jesus was a prophet, but not the Son of God Christianity teaches Jesus is God in the flesh who came to rescue humanity Islam points to a book revealed to a prophet

Christianity points to God stepping into history and absorbing all of the sin on the cross Jesus versus Buddhism Buddhism teaches that suffering is escaped through detachment from desire Jesus teaches that God enters human suffering and redeems it through love and sacrifice in the empty grave Jesus versus Hinduism like Hindu traditions describe many paths and many expressions of the divine through circles of cycles of karma and rebirth but Jesus He claims something very different When he says that he is the way the truth in the life and that no one comes to the Father except through him there Isn't many ways Jesus says there is one way to the Father and it is through him and Jesus versus secular humanism. Secular humanism believes humanity can gradually improve itself through again reason and education and moral progress. We talked about that a little bit earlier. But Jesus says the human problem is deeper than your behavior and that the human heart itself must be transformed. What about Jesus versus atheism? Well, atheism concludes that there is no ultimate meaning behind existence. Jesus teaches that every human life carries eternal value because it was created and loved by the Father. Jesus versus odinism or warrior traditions, right? So warrior belief systems often elevate strength and honor and power. And Jesus reveals a kingdom where greatness is found in humility and mercy and sacrificial love. Jesus versus moral self-improvement. Like I love self-improvement, but many belief systems teach that you work hard enough, you can become worthy of God. Jesus teaches no one earns grace and that God comes looking for people who know that they can't save themselves.

Like that's who Jesus comes to. What about Jesus versus religion itself? Because it teaches that people climb their way toward God through effort and self-discipline. We said that a thousand times. Jesus turns that idea upside down and shows a God who comes down to humanity instead. And then there's a claim that stands above every comparison. Jesus versus death. Every religious leader in human history eventually died and remained in the grave. Jesus did not. Jesus did not. The early Christians were not claiming that Jesus lived on symbolically or spiritually in their hearts. They were straight up claiming that the tomb was empty and that they saw him alive again. That claim is either the greatest mistake in history or the greatest event in history. There really is no middle ground, greatest mistake, greatest event, no middle ground. So let me make this as abundantly clear as I can. If Jesus rose from the dead, then he is not simply one teacher among many. If Jesus rose from the dead, he is not merely one prophet competing with other prophets. No, not at all. If Jesus rose from the dead, then he is exactly who he said he was. And if that is true, then the same Jesus who walked out of that tomb still walks into dark places on earth looking for people who think their story is already finished. I hope that's what you're seeing here, including prison cells, which means the final word over your life is not the worst thing you've ever done. The final word is the grace of God who came looking for you. And that is why when you really place Jesus beside everybody else, and the conversation has to just change. It's like it just doesn't even weigh because the question is no longer which religion helps you cope with life. The question becomes incredibly personal at that moment.

What if the God who made you has already come looking for you? And that's where I want to end this. He is looking for you. He's pursuing you. I said this a few weeks ago. This very show is proof that he's pursuing you. This wasn't on my radar, on my bingo card five months ago. And now I'm sitting with all of you every single week, pointing to Jesus and his transformative work. And so Jesus versus everybody. And you have to ask, which one do I choose? Which one do I choose? If you've never given your life to Christ, today's the day to do it. Today's the day to do it. This was incredibly, I told you it was going to be super scholastic today because of what we're dealing with. But at the same time, it's personal at the end of the day. He's drawing on your heart. The very reason if you've never watched one of our shows or the very reason maybe this title grabbed you is because you are looking for purpose. You are looking for meaning. You are looking for the very thing that is like, man, if this whole God thing is real, I want to feel it in me. I want to feel it in my life. I want to feel it sitting on this pot or in this block or whatever it might be. And here's the thing. I dare you. Take a step with Jesus. Take a step with him. Maybe you grew up seeing it in a way that it was never meant to see and it became abusive

or whatever it might be. Listen, let him take all of that away and let him fill your life. Take that next step. Give your life to him. I promise you, I promise you, you will never regret it.
