Anyway, so today's lesson is church gathering. Really important when you give your life to the Lord, you can't be a solo Lone Ranger Christian. It's biblical. It's important to come to church, so come out and find out why that matters so much in your walk. We also do youth ministry every Wednesday night, 645. Service starts with Bible study, then our youth goes into their own group. They connect. They get to know one another. They're having conversations that are relevant to where they are in life. Strongly encourage you, if you have kids in the grades of seven through 12, or if you know anyone in that age, start bringing them out. Really seeing some growth come out of those classes. I think we've had some really great ones I know there's many more in this building and And I'm just really grateful for everybody that shared I wanted to give a couple honorable mentions of testimonies because like I said Every single shirt and book is gonna help the rent So I just want to remind you guys that for instance sister Lydia. She has her book here And those are available where the shirts are it's called they say you love me show me And it's an amazing story of growing up in Oakland big bad, Oakland We also have brother Dale's Jesus comes a jingle town his story He's a Vietnam vet who actually Dale can you come up for a second real quick his book is also there available We have mine lost in the storm And Brother Alfonso, he is a pastor son. These are all testimonies and Dale I was having a conversation with him and I asked him if he can share a few minutes about this 250 years of America and I thought you would be fitting you are a Vietnam vet and And we just thank you so much for your service as well as everybody that served and some of them that didn't come home in All our wars, but if you can just quickly share what America means to you Okay, the pastor gave me five minutes well when I think about With this country for 250 years what it means to me

I have to reflect it when I was dropped in a combat zone in 1968. I was 19 years old I was chased by a sidewinder missile. I was blind for three weeks. I Was 19 I was I wasn't old enough to vote but I was old enough to die for my country and I reflect upon that but I Also reflect on the 55,000 vets that never came home from Vietnam and I think about the other countries that I saw How horribly and how poor they were? Nice to see you back Johnny. God bless you and Well when I came back I flew into San Bernardino in 1970 and I kissed the ground because when I kissed that ground man, we all kissed the ground when we got off the wind got off our freedom bird and I So much appreciate this country. You have the right to choose You know, I got saved in Jesus Christ came to my apartment in San Alejandro and saved me and I had the right to choose and Not only as vets we laid out on our lives, but you know what we give you the right to choose God gives you the right to choose You know, you don't have to wait 900 years or thousand years for somebody to make you a saint You can become a saint right now All you gotta do is come to Jesus and Repent, you know, God sent his only Son to this earth placed him on that cross for us so we can be saved come to him have a relationship with him and Have a home in heaven in the third heaven praise God What a promise you have that right to choose you have the freedom to choose other countries don't have what you have here They just don't I saw what they how they live some in Vietnam when I was in Da Nang They had a hole this family made a hole in the ground And that's what that was her house That's how they lived I'm getting shake shake it up here. Not only his life is upbringing but going to Vietnam and and the experience that he had over there You know yesterday thinking about 250 years I there's a friend of mine friend of mine in Texas. He is a United States Marine. The reason I say is because he says once a Marine, always a Marine. And he fought in the Iraq war and one of the most hardest places was Fallujah. He lost a lot of men and friends. And he wrote something yesterday that really put it, he just worded it so well. He says, happy Independence Day. God bless our nation. America has never belonged to one race or one culture alone. It is not just white. It is not just black. It is not just brown. It is a multicultural nation strengthened by people from every background who have sacrificed, worked and served and believed in the promise of this country. We don't have to erase our differences to love one another. We don't have to deny our history to appreciate our future. We can honor every part of our story while standing together under one flag. This is the America I believe in. One nation united not by the color of our skin but by our shared hope, our shared sacrifice and our shared love for this country. God bless America. You know, reflecting on my own family, all I know is this nation. I was looking and trying to count the years on my mother's side have been in the United States as far as we know for over 115 years. On my father's side over 105 years. And it was this nation that allowed my father on my dad's side, my grandfather on my dad's side to come over here during a revolution in Mexico and because this nation embraced my grandfather as a child, we were able to grow up here in America in Texas. And because of that, my father was able to raise a family in this free nation. And because of that, I was able to grow up in this free nation. And we're a place where somebody can go to prison and God call him to pastor a church in this nation, where we can worship God freely in this nation, where we can have a Jesus across our shirt in this nation, where we can go out to the public square and worship and shout the name of Jesus in this nation, because we have the freedom to do that. And not everybody has that. And because of that, somebody like me, somebody like my father who worked the fields and my mother and my grandfather who worked the fields. Now my children have I have seen them graduate and go to college and have careers because of this nation. So we need to appreciate what we have. You know, and I just wanted to share that before I go into today's message. So God bless you guys. God bless United States of America. I have this title, this message called Do

You Ever Feel Unworthy of His Presence? Do you ever feel unworthy of his presence? Who has their Bibles today? If you have your Bible, lift your Bible up and say this is my Bible. It is God's word to me. My guide and my strength. I bring it ready to learn. I open it with faith in Jesus. I live it with courage. Without it I grow weak. With it I grow strong. Today I bring it, believe it, and obey it. In Jesus' name. Another story I meant to say before I move on, I forgot to mention it. See a lot of children grow up with comic books, a lot of us, and we have superheroes like Spider-Man and Hulk and Superman and Batman. When I was growing up, I was very much attracted to this comic, it was called Sergeant Rock. And it was a soldier in World War II. And that was the superhero I looked up to as a kid. I thought that like the soldier was just the way some kids look at these superheroes is the way I saw soldiers. And I remember one time going to Texas and we were there and we were visiting my dad's side of the family. And I saw this man walk in, not walk in, roll than on a wheelchair. Both of his legs were missing from the knee down. And I remember as a child, I don't remember his name and I should have asked my dad before I stepped up here, I don't know. And I remember saying, who's that? And my dad said, that's my cousin, that's your second cousin. And I remember talking to him because I asked, you know, kids, they don't hold back. I'm like, what happened to your legs? And he says, I stepped on a mine in Vietnam. What? And you remember, my heroes are soldiers. And he says, I was in Vietnam and I was out there and I was fighting and I stepped on a mine and it blew my legs off. And I said, wow.

And as a kid, I said, what if you could do it all over again? And he said, for this country, I'll step on that mine again. Little kid hearing that. See, I just want you to understand because when we do these things like today and have this, that's what that means to me. And I just wanted to share that. I almost forgot to mention that. Lord God, we thank you for this message. We give you all honor, we give you all glory, Lord. We just thank you for this message in the name of Jesus. We pray for our hearts to be open, our minds to be open to receive what it is that you have for each and every one of us. You are the senior pastor of this church and this pulpit belongs to you, Lord. We thank you in Jesus' name, amen. Do you ever feel unworthy of his presence? In Hebrews chapter four, verse 16. Hebrews chapter four, verse 16. I'll give it a minute. It says this. It says, let us then with confidence drawn near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace Hebrews 4, 16, I'll read it one more time. Let us then with confidence drawn near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy

and find grace to help in time of need. I believe that every single one of us here knows what it's like and knows what it feels like to walk into a room believing that you don't belong. Anybody ever been there? Some of you might be feeling that right now and I'm telling you, don't listen to the devil. You do belong. And maybe many times it's because of our past. Sometimes we think everybody can read our past on our face and we just feel like completely exposed. Or maybe because of our failures. Or maybe because of wounds we didn't even choose. Some of us have wounds that you didn't choose that. But nevertheless, it makes you feel left out of the room. There was a person in the Bible named Mephibosheth. He knew that feeling and that's who I want to talk about today. And when King David summoned him, what he expected or didn't expect. So I'm gonna be reading out of 2 Samuel chapter nine. We're gonna be there for the remainder of this message. 2 Samuel chapter nine starting at verse one. And this is a really important thing that we need to talk about. Everyone has been giving testimonies these last few weeks. I'll be honest, I didn't know when I was gonna end the series. And when Joseph spoke last week, he did such an amazing job.

I know many of you were shocked and many of you probably didn't even know about what he shared about his older sister. And it was then where I said, okay, I'm ready. to preach because it was already like boiling over in me. It had been so many weeks that I hadn't given a message. And this message here is what came to my heart and my mind. In 2 Samuel chapter 9, verse 1, we're going to read 1 through 4 and talk about it. So just to set the stage, young David, the one that killed Goliath, the one that was anointed king by Samuel, many years passed, many issues and problems and hurdles he had to overcome passed. And he was now the king of Israel. And he is in his throne. And see, a lot of kings back then, when somebody did a good deed or a bad deed or somebody, if the king made a promise, he would write it down. How many of you write notes in your phone or you'll forget? I do that all the time. I have to. I'll forget to show up for service. And I write these notes of something that happened. And so David is on his throne now. And it says here, and David said to his court, is there anyone left of the house of Saul? See, Saul was the king before him. And he said, is there anyone left that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake? I'm going to just read 1 through 4 and we'll talk about it.

It says, now there was a servant of the house of Saul whose name was Ziba. And they called him to David. And the king said to him, are you Ziba? And he said, I am your servant. And the king said, is there not still someone at the house of Saul that I may show the kindness of God to him? And Ziba said to the king, there is still a son of Jonathan. He is crippled in his feet. And the king said to him, where is he? And Ziba said to the king, he is in the house of Mashir, the son of Ammiel, at Lo-debar. See, here's the thing, is that if you have read this passage in this story, that the first king of Israel was Saul. God did not want Saul. The people wanted Saul. The people came to the prophet Samuel and they said, we want a king. We want to be like all the other nations. They have kings. We want a king. And Samuel brought that forth unto the Lord and said, the people want a king. And he says, why? They have me already. But nevertheless, I'll give them a king. And this king will come and he'll take your sons. And he will take them to war and they'll die.

But if a king is what they want, a king is what they'll get. And God raised up Saul. But as we know, if we read the story that Saul became disobedient unto the Lord, he was not obedient. He was not reverent. He was not respectful of God. And because of that, God sent Samuel to talk to Saul and told him, because of your disobedience, I will take the kingdom away from you. And this hurt Samuel's heart very much because he loved Saul, but he had to be obedient to God. And then God told him, I have found another king of Israel, someone that is after my own heart. And he sent him to Bethlehem. And in Bethlehem, he found a man named Jesse. And the Lord told him, one of Jesse's sons will be the next king of Israel. And he went and he told him, bring all your sons. And he brought all his sons. And Samuel's like, wow, surely it's this tall one. He's real handsome. And God said, nope, not him. Well, maybe this one. Surely he looks like a king. And God said, nope, not him. And he went through all the sons. And God says, nope, none of them. And Samuel was like, wait, Jesse, have I met all your sons?

He was, well, yeah, I mean, my son David, but he's out there with the sheep. He smells like sheep. He's just a little kid. He says, bring him to me. He didn't look like a king. He wasn't tall like a king. And he called them. And the Lord told him, this is the one. He says, you judge by the looks, and I judge by the heart. David King. Now here's the problem though, because Saul had a son named Jonathan. How many of us know that when there's a king, who's next after him? The son. So Jonathan should have been the heir of the throne of Israel. But then here comes young David, and Saul didn't know that he was anointed to be king, and he comes and he becomes best friends with Jonathan. Think about that. He becomes best friends with the heir, the one that should have had the anointing of God to be king, but yet David has it, and Jonathan saw something in David. See, Jonathan had every right to strike David down, because David was a threat to his kingdom. What I love about Jonathan is Jonathan, he wasn't like his father. He believed in the God of Israel. He believed in the promises of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And even though it was his kingdom, technically, even though he was the heir of Saul, the Bible says that when he met David, that they loved each other, even to the best of friends. He says, I love you more than I love my own soul. And as time went, and Saul found out about David, and he wanted to kill David.

But Jonathan knew what was going to happen, because God's will is always going to happen. And he has this conversation with David, one of the last conversations that he ever saw him, because David was on the run, because his father wanted to kill him. And he says, David, he goes, I know that you're going to be king and not me. He says, but make me a promise. Make me a promise that you will be kind to my children. You see, any time, even to this day in other nations, when a dictator or somebody takes over a government or dethrones a president or a king, it is almost the duty to wipe that king's family off the face of the earth. Because you never want any of the boys or grandchildren to grow up and take your throne back, because they feel they're a rightful heir. So that's the way they would do it. So Jonathan is basically asking a promise from David. He's like, when you become king, I know it's, in a sense, your duty to wipe my father's family out. But can you please show mercy to my children? Do you realize what he's asking him? He's asking David, will you not kill off my lineage, my legacy? But see, you got to understand, on David's side, that could be threatening. Because if he don't take out all of Saul's family, then one of them will grow up and try to take the throne back. So David understood what Jonathan was asking him, but because he loved Jonathan so much, he told him, I promise I make an oath to be kind to your family. And we read the Bible and we know that Jonathan went to war with his father Saul, and in that battle, both of them died. And when both of them died, David came in to become king, because not only was the king dead, but Jonathan the heir was dead. So all of Saul's family was murdered. And those that weren't tried running. But at that time, the son of Jonathan, Mephibosheth, long name, in case some of you want a boy's

name, Mephibosheth is a cool one. It kind of sounds funny, but you might love that name once you hear this story. No just for short, Mephi, right? The nurse of baby Mephibosheth, when she heard the news that Saul was dead, and Jonathan was dead, she instinctively knew. Ew, they're going to come and wipe out and kill this baby. So the nurse grabbed Mephibosheth and ran. And by her running in haste and nervousness and fear, she dropped the baby. And I don't know. It doesn't say specifically, but I think it broke his ankles or broke his feet or something. Because if a bone isn't set right, what happens? It grows, you know? There's probably no doctor. She's on the run. She dropped baby Mephibosheth. And in his infant, in his child, in his baby, it crippled him for the rest of his life. And it's interesting, because here in the passage we read, David remembers his promise. And he says, hey, is there anyone left of Jonathan? But you've got to understand that Mephibosheth, being a baby, he didn't understand what happened. But he did understand one thing, that it was his father, Jonathan, who should have been king. It was his grandfather, Saul, who was king. So surely, he should have been murdered and killed. Maybe he was raised with the story. Maybe he wrote, what's wrong with my feet?

What happened? Maybe he was told the story over and over. We had to run, because King David came to be king. And we had to run, and we dropped you, and your bones set wrong. And because of that, that's why you're handicapped. That's why you're not able to walk. But if David ever finds you, he will kill you. I'm sure this was told to him all his life. Mephibosheth, you should be king instead of David. So if they ever find you, they will kill you. Maybe Mephibosheth didn't know the promise that he made to his father, Jonathan. So years pass. Mephibosheth is now an adult. And David remembers the oath and the promise. And that's why he says, is there anyone left of the house of Saul that I may show him kindness for Jonathan's sake? And that's where they found Ziba. Ziba used to be a servant in the house of Saul. And he says, well, yes, there's Jonathan, but he's crippled. I have a feeling that Ziba said that to King David, because surely he's like, oh, man, he's going to kill Jonathan. I mean, he's going to kill Mephibosheth. And he's like, hey, yeah, Mephibosheth lives, but he's lame from his feet. Maybe they didn't believe King David. King David says, look, I just want to show him kindness.

Probably like, yeah, OK. And the king said, where is he? And Ziba said, he's in the house of Mashir, the son of Amiel, at Lod-de-bar. You know what's interesting? As I looked up the word Lod-de-bar, he was in this place called Lod-de-bar. Any time you read something in the Bible, there's always significance to it. You know what Lod-de-bar means? It means nothing. So Mephibosheth, who should have been the heir of Jonathan, who was the heir of Saul, lived in a place called nothing. Matter of fact, it meant nothing. It meant a pasture-less place, not even a pasture. Not even grass grew there. So this young man who should have been the king is not only crippled, but living in a place hidden away from the king in a place called nothing. You know, I say that because here's the thing. That some of us, maybe you're not crippled in your feet, but you hear, but you came from a place of nothing. You came from a neighborhood of nothing. You came from a family of nothing. And you find yourself hidden away because you are rejected by this world. That was Mephibosheth. If we go on to verse 4, I mean 5. I mean 5. It says, then King David sent.

And he says, oh, I want you to bring him to me. And brought him from the house of Meshir, the son of Ammiel at Lodabar. And Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, son of Saul, came to David and fell. his face and paid homage. I have a feeling Mephibosheth said this is it they found me I'm gonna die he's gonna kill me because he's there's no way he can let me live because I come in the lineage of Saul and Jonathan there is no way and I'm crippled I can't even run I can't hide I can't do nothing so they bring him into the throne room of David and he throws himself in front of the king he fell on his face and paid homage you know paid homage is like he basically tried to show him respect surely I'm gonna die but what if he shows me mercy oh great king oh great king look at me and king David says Mephibosheth Mephibosheth and he answered behold I'm your servant you know that that old saying when you say I'm your servant is is you're saying I'm in servitude of you I'm beneath you I am here to to do whatever it is you ask of me I imagine Mephibosheth not only was he crippled not only did he live in a place called nothing I'm sure he lived in poverty maybe he was a beggar he had nothing but yet he was an heir of the king kingdom but he had nothing to show for it see some of us you grew up in a good home you grew up in a good place but you know what the the life that that that maybe crippled us in our childhood led us to a place of nothing and one day you wake up and you're just like what happened what happened to me how did I get here why am I hidden away in this place in verse 7 it says and David said to him do not fear why are you afraid don't fear for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan I don't know what went through Mephibosheth's mind maybe he thought how cruel he's gonna kill me but he's gonna try to butter me up first does he want me to bring my walls down and then he's gonna behead me because there's no reason for him to show me kindness there's no reason for him to be good reason for him to be good to me there's no reason for this but he tells him listen don't fear you know it's interesting is the fact that he says don't fear

means that king David saw fear in the eyes of Mephibosheth don't fear don't be afraid I'm here to show you kindness because of your father and and maybe Mephibosheth probably didn't know of this promise if you really think about it I'm sure king David who wasn't king then when he was talking to Jonathan maybe there was nobody else around maybe nobody even knew of this promise you know the Bible says that that's why Jesus says let your yes be yes and your no no that you when you make an oath you make it unto the Lord so maybe the only one that witnessed this oath was Jonathan David and God and here David he's king Jonathan's gone so he could have lied he could have destroyed Jonathan but for whatever reason not for whatever reason but see here's the thing that David feared God it doesn't mean that he was a perfect king it doesn't mean he was a perfect man but the Bible says that he was after God's heart there might be some of you that you know what you've messed up but you love God like you really love God that's why a lot of times you'll be at a barn or somebody trying to preach to you and they're drunk I want to I want to say this I truly believe that that person really loves the Lord but he struggles he struggles in his flesh he he struggles in his addiction he struggles in his vices, but in his heart of heart, he has a love for God. He just can't change, can't turn it around. But David says to him, do not fear, for I will show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan. And then he says this, and I will restore to you all the land of Saul, your father. What? You gotta remember, Mephibosheth came from nothing, from low to bar, there's not even grass for the animals to eat. He's been in poverty. As far as we know, he was a beggar. He was just at the mercy of somebody else feeding him

because he couldn't go out and hunt. He couldn't grow out and grow his own grain. He was at the mercy of other people. His entire life, from the moment he was an infant when he broke his feet, everything given to him was basically at the mercy of somebody else. And he's like, did I just hear him right? Because his father, Jonathan, and his grandfather, Saul, was king. And being king, he had a lot of land. And in that land, a lot of servants. And in that land, a lot of cattle and animals. His grandfather was rich. And David says, don't fear, I'm gonna show you kindness and everything that belonged to your father and everything that belonged to your grandfather, I'm gonna restore to you. I couldn't believe his ears, couldn't imagine that. Many of us come from that place of nothing and we just, we feel we don't deserve nothing. We have this poverty mentality. I am nothing, I come from nothing, I deserve nothing. And he says, I'm gonna restore to you everything that belonged to Saul. And then, to make it even better, he says, and you shall eat at my table. Wait a second. How, how can this be? I come from nothing, I am nothing,

and I'm gonna eat at the king's table? You know who else ate at the king's table? The king's sons. That's it. You know when Jesus says in the cross, when he says to the thief, he says, today you will be with me in paradise, right? I looked up that word, paradise, and it's actually a word that, it went back to the Babylonian days, and in the Babylonian days, the palace of the Babylonian king was kind of built with a courtyard in the middle. And in the middle of that courtyard, they would plant trees and plants that were just the most beautiful from all the land of Babylonia. And they would, basically what it was, was they built a paradise. It's almost like he had his own personal park, his own personal Golden Gate Park, or whatever park is around here that's the most beautiful park. He had his own park in the center of his palace that when it was stressed out, when things were too hard, too rough, he just wanted to clear his mind, he would go into his personal, and they would use this word, paradise. Nobody else could go into the paradise,

just the king alone. So the Babylonian king had this paradise in the very center of his palace. Nobody could go into it, just the king alone. And Jesus used that word to the criminal. Remember, one criminal was mocking Jesus, and the other criminal was saying, don't you fear God? We deserve to be here. We're criminals, we're thieves. But this man has done nothing. And then he looks at Jesus, a criminal, a convict, a drug addict, a gangbanger, a prostitute, and says, Lord, can you at least think of me? And when you're in your kingdom, can you imagine that? That this criminal on the cross thought he was so low that he was from nothing that the last thing he was going to say was, hey Lord, can you let me into your kingdom? No, he says, can you just think of me sometimes? And Jesus says, today you will be with me in paradise. Remember what paradise means? Only the place where the king dwells. Think about that. Some of you are like that criminal and you deserve what you got. All the pain, all the suffering, many of us brought it upon ourselves because of the life we choose to live. And we're just like, Jesus, I'm too filthy to be with you, but can you think of me once in a while? And the Lord says, today you'll be with me in paradise. So, back to what we're talking about.

He says, I'm going to restore to you all that belong to your father and all of the land, and not only that, you will be at my table. Now, this has gone overboard. This is crazy. This is insane. How is it that David is going to bring somebody that should have been the enemy of Mephibosheth, and yet he tells him, you're going to dine with me. You're going to eat at my table. And look what he answers Mephibosheth. This is in verse 8, and he paid homage. He's blown away. He's just like, this is too much. Maybe I'm not understanding. Maybe I'm not hearing you right, but I think he's going to kill me now. So, I'm just going to pay homage. Oh, you're a great king. You're awesome. And he says, what is your servant? He was that you should show regard for a dead dog such as I. So, King David says, I'm going to treat you good. I'm going to restore all your land. You're going to eat at my table. And how does Mephibosheth answer? He says, you're being too good to me. I'm nothing. I'm worse than a dead dog. Why would you show me this kindness? I'm worse than a dead dog. You know, some of us, you don't need somebody else to call you horrible names because you call yourself horrible names when nobody's around. You look in the mirror and you don't see your beauty. You look in the mirror and you don't see your worth. You look in the mirror and you don't see why anyone would love you. You feel unworthy of love, much less the love of God. Why would a God have mercy on me? I'm just, I'm worse than a dead dog. I've destroyed my life. I've destroyed other people. I've destroyed everything that I touch. And every time I try to do something right, I mess it up over and over and over and over again. Why would you have mercy on me?

And I love the fact that the next verse, it's like King David just disregarded what Mephibosheth said. And instead, it says the king called Ziba, remember the servant of Saul. He called Ziba, Saul's servant, and said to him, listen, clearly he ain't hearing me, so I'm going to talk to you. Everything that belonged to Saul and to all of his house, I have given to your master's grandson. And you and your sons and your servants shall till the land for him and shall bring in the produce. Because remember, this person Ziba was, he was a servant of King Saul and David just commissioned him and says, you used to be the servant of Saul, but now I'm making you the servant of Mephibosheth. A matter of fact, all the land that I give him, you're going to work that land and whatever vegetables and fruits and all that stuff, you're going to bring that in for him. That your master's grandson may have bread to eat. And this is a trip, right, because he says you're going to bring all that produce in, but then he goes on, he says, but Mephibosheth, your master's grandson, shall always eat at my table. This is amazing because not only is David restoring him, but he's telling him, you're gonna come in here, and what I eat, you're gonna eat. And see, back then, kings ate good. See, I grew up on poor food, and I didn't know it was poor food, which is weird because now that's my favorite food. Anybody else like that? Right, I didn't know. Rice and beans and chorizo and rice,

arroz con leche, I mean, just all this stuff, I had no idea. You know, papas with chorizo, I didn't know my mom would do potatoes because potatoes fill you up. She had a bunch of boys. Papas with chorizo. I didn't know, you know, I didn't know that everything we had, you know, my dad would work the fields, and my mom, he would hand the check over to my mom, and my mom would make that money stretch to feed four boys. I didn't know. But nevertheless, the king ate good, and he says, he's gonna eat at my table. It says, now, Ziba had 15 sons, and Ziba himself had 20 servants. So now, all of that now belongs to Mephibosheth, the guy that came from nothing. Then Ziba said to the king, according to all that my lord the king commands his servant, so will your servant do. Ziba's like, man, I will do it. I have a feeling Ziba was excited because remember, if Ziba was a servant of Saul, once David became king, Ziba lived in poverty, too. But now Ziba comes, and he's like, but now Ziba comes, and he's like, man, I can work the land that I used to do for Saul.

And he says, everything you're asking of me, I will do it. Verse, the next verse, or the next portion of the verse says so Mephibosheth ate at David's table like one of the king's sons. David made a promise to Jonathan, and he held on to that promise because he made a vow before God. So whatever King David's sons ate, Mephibosheth ate. Whatever was served at that table was also served to Mephibosheth. Nobody else had that honor to eat with, see, people would wait their whole life to eat with the king one time. People wait their whole life. Most of us would never be in the White House. And if you got invited to go to the White House to have dinner, be like, wow, I wanna take pictures. I wanna show this on Facebook. Because most likely, that's the only time that would ever happen. And most people never get to do that. I haven't even been in City Hall unless I'm paying something much less the Capitol or the White House. And so not only was it a dinner, he ate every day with the king. And it says, and Mephibosheth had a young son whose name was Micah. And all who lived in Ziba's house became Mephibosheth's servants. So Mephibosheth lived in Jerusalem,

for he ate always at the king's table. Now he was lame in both his feet. It's interesting, right? Because, you know, like, you see a lot of Western movies. If you go to an old cemetery, it'll say the person's name, the day they were born, the day they died, and they would have, like, one little line about his life. You know, he rustled cattle his whole life, or loved his wife and children. It would just be, like, a one sentence. And it's interesting that in the Bible, the one thing we remember of Mephibosheth was that he ate at the king's table for the rest of his life. That's his blurb. That's his theme. That's what he's known by. Because it was so rare to eat with the king, much less sit at the king's table every single day. So what does this story have to do with us? And I think without even saying, I think we already see some similarities. We always see some things. But let me focus in on a couple of things of what this story has to do with us. Let's do a bullet list. Number one, Mephibosheth was born into royalty. He should have been the heir of a kingdom. But he was injured as a child, and it stopped his destiny, what was supposed to happen.

Third, not only did he get stopped and injured as a child, his injury wasn't even his own fault. And because of that, he was forced to live in hiding. And as he was forced to live in hiding, because of that, he believed that he deserved death. Because not only was he crippled, not only was he on the run, he lived in low debar. He couldn't do nothing for himself, so he grew up believing he deserved death. And when he was finally summoned to King David, for sure he was expecting death. He was expecting judgment. And instead, he received mercy and a seat at the king's table. Like he said, what is your servant that you should show regard for a dead dog such as I? You know, I think of Mephibosheth being the son of a king. And I can't help but to think about Jesus, because Jesus came as the son of God. And he came on this earth and born through Mary and grew up in Israel. So Mephibosheth was born a true king. He was royalty. But Jesus also came as the true king, the king of all kings. And here's the difference, though, is that Mephibosheth was taken on the run, but Jesus, he left his throne willingly on purpose. He came on purpose, yet he had no sin. His suffering wasn't his fault. When Mephibosheth fell, it wasn't his fault.

And when Jesus came, he had no sin, yet his suffering wasn't his fault. But he was rejected. Remember, there's a part in the Bible where it says, one brother tells another brother, I think I found the Messiah. I found him, the anointed one. And he says, really, where? He's in Nazareth. Nazareth? Can anything good come out of Nazareth? In a sense, it was a low debar, a place of nothing. Some of you are like, man, how God's going to use me? I'm from empire. How's God going to use me, man? I'm from the West Side. Ain't God going to use me? Or I'm from Oakland. How's God going to use me? Or I'm from the rehab. What good comes out of rehab? Whatever it is, they can't use me. Rehab. Whatever it is that you came out of, you're just like, how is anything good going to come out of it? But the Bible says that Jesus was wounded for our transgressions. And it's interesting, because when Jesus is on the cross, he actually quotes a psalm. And he says, Lord, Lord, why has thou forsaken me?

He's crying out to God. He says, God, why have you left me? And I just think there's so many similarities with Mephibosheth. Mephibosheth was royalty, but he didn't get his kingdom. And he reached a point where he had to suffer. and live a life of suffering. And it wasn't even his fault. He didn't even deserve it. And I think I've shared this before, and if I shared this on a Sunday, well, I'm gonna share it again, because it's worth sharing. Is that I want you to imagine the entire world in darkness because of sin. And then Jesus is born as this little glowing white light. And he had no sin on him, yet the whole world was dark in sin. But the moment he was crucified, something amazing happened. As he's on the cross, glowing, because he was the only one without sin, all the stuff that was, all the filth that was on everybody else started to jump onto him. And if you could see from the sky in a spiritual sense, you would see this glow diminish as all the sins of the world started piling on him and piling on him and piling on him. And you know what they say that on the cross, when he was on the cross,

that he had to lift himself up on the nails on his feet in order to breathe, because the way he was stretched out. And experts say, and historians say, that his lungs were stretched out, so he had to push on his feet just to breathe. Can you imagine pushing on your feet with a nail through them? But yet every time he breathed, he had to, and then he had to push, just to breathe. But he had no sin. He didn't deserve to be up there. And I imagine at one point, he quotes Psalm as all the sins of the world, not only of the past, the present, but our sins. We watch the passion and we get mad at the people that are making fun of him, but do you realize your sins and my sins nailed him to the cross too? Everything you have done and I have done helped nail him to the cross. He was innocent. He didn't deserve it. He was suffering, wracked in pain. And because of us, and all the sin goes on him. And he quotes a Psalm, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Why is this happening to me? I'm nothing but like a dead dog. He took the judgment that belong to us because he took our place. We receive mercy. See Mephibosheth was a son of Jonathan, son of Saul. And the king restored everything to him and gave him mercy. He should have been killed by all means by King David because he would have been an heir of the kingdom, but he showed him mercy. But Jesus did something better than Mephibosheth. Jesus himself says, no, kill me and show them mercy, us. Us. Do you realize that the only reason we are here today was because of him on the cross? He took that upon himself. He didn't deserve the cross. We did. We deserved it. Yet he chose it. You know, many of us have wounds that were never our fault. Yeah, some of us, you guys did it to yourself. I did things to myself. Many things that were hard in my life, I can't blame nobody. I used to when I first got, oh, I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for that rat. Well, if I wasn't doing something wrong, there'd be nothing to rat on me about.

I put myself there. Or I'd be mad at the correctional officers. Man, that dude's just doing his job. He's trying to get home to his family, feed his kids, and he just put an application in and got a job. Yeah, some of them take it too far, but for the most part. But many of us, It's not even your fault. Many of us have wounds like Mephibosheth when he was dropped as a child and what happened as a childhood handicapped him for the rest of his life. And many of you, you were handicapped and it wasn't even your choice from a broken home, from abuse, from sexual abuse, from abandonment, from addiction, from betrayal, from generational things in your family and from shame. You didn't ask for this. That's not what this life should have been about. You were born to be somebody, to do something, but because of something that happened in your childhood, you were crippled and you lived your life crippled and you start to think I don't deserve nothing. I'm nothing but a dead dog. So you know what? If this man beats me, then I probably deserve and if this woman cheats on me, I probably deserve it. And you just feel like all this stuff in your life, you had it coming because you were nothing. You were in low debar, you were a mephibosheth, you're worse than a dead dog. So we limp through life believing that we're disqualified from having anything good. Many of you right now, you are living your life as if you deserve nothing good. And because of that, you don't try to find something good because you feel you are nothing. But then somebody greater than King David, see the king said in his kingdom, he goes, Is there anyone of the house of Saul that is still alive that I can show them kindness? Because somewhere along the line here, I'm going to say this, somebody prayed for you

because you wouldn't be here. You would not be here. Somebody prayed for you and the king of all kings was in his throne and said, I remember somebody prayed a prayer, is there anybody still alive so I can show them kindness? And the angels come, not Ziba, but an angel comes and says, Oh, actually, yeah, there's this woman in Oakland and somebody prayed for her. There's this woman on the west side, there's this guy over there in empire or whatever it is, and there's this person right there sitting in prison and they were prayed for. And the Lord says, bring them to me. Tell them that I summoned them. And somehow we find ourself at a church service, we find ourself at a revival, we find ourself on a tablet or on a TV watching YouTube in a hotel room, and we're feeling filthy and we're feeling dirty and we're just feeling like we're just nothing but a dead dog and we're out desolate. We're in low Debar in a place of nothing with not even grass. See, do you realize that we're servants of the king? Do you know why we're supposed to evangelize? Because the Lord has many sons and daughters that had somebody prayed for them and he says, where's my servants? There's somebody over there, summon them to me, bring them to me. Do you realize that when we are evangelizing, we're sharing the gospel of Jesus with somebody, do you realize we're being like Ziba unto the king and we're going and finding the ones that were dropped as a youth, the ones that were destroyed, the ones that were handicapped, the ones that were lame in their feet, the ones that were broken? And we are called to find them and bring them back to the king. And you find yourself at the altar and you look at everybody in this church or some other church and you're just like, wow, look at them, that family looks like they have it great and look at her, she's so beautiful and man, look at that guy, he looks like really successful at his job and you're just sitting here at church and you're ready to walk out right now.

You're ready to walk out of a service just like this or you're ready to turn to a different channel on YouTube or Panda or Redobo because there's no way that you You can be like those people because you're nothing but a dead dog and you're from Lodibar. You're from a place of desolation. You're from a place that not even grass grows. And the Lord calls you and we hear God calling our name and you're like, okay, he's going to deal with me now because I deserve nothing. Surely the wrath of God is going to come upon me now because I've hurt too many people, destroyed too many people, destroyed families, I've broken laws, I've done all these things against God. I've cursed God. I've sinned against God. So now God is going to deal with me. And the Lord says, I'm going to restore to you what should have always belonged to you. And most of us sit there and say, God, I don't deserve it. I don't deserve it. And this is the beautiful thing is he says, you know what? You're right. You don't deserve it. But you know what? I paid the price on the cross. I paid the price. Every time I was taking a breath and I was pushing against the nails, I was thinking of you. I did it for you. How could you know me, Lord? I'm over here in the United States in 20, whatever, 19, whatever. He says, don't you know, I know all things. Can you imagine if the Lord said, I was almost going to give up on breathing, but then I remembered you.

And he thought of you and said, I don't deserve this. And he says, I'm going to restore to you what should have belonged to you. Somebody prayed for you in the past and somebody robbed you of your childhood. Somebody robbed you of your future. Somebody robbed you of your legacy. But what I am saying is I'm going to restore all those things, everything that the enemy stole from you. I am going to restore it. I'm going to fix it. I'm going to give it back to you because it is your legacy. It was always meant for you and I'm going to restore it. Lord, I don't deserve it. I don't deserve it. Lord. He's oh, I'm not done yet. Matter of fact, from this day forth, you will dine with me and my table and the day you finish this life and you close your eyes to this world and you're open your eyes in that world. You will sit at my table. You will stand before the gates and I will say, enter into my home and sit at my table and dine with me forever. Wow. You know, Mephibosheth was lame in his feet. But when he sat at the table with his sons, with King David's sons, you know, it's interesting that the table covered the cripple. The table covered the handicap and Mephibosheth's feet disappeared beneath the king's table. In the same way, do you realize all those things that have handicapped you, all those things that have caused you pain and crippled your spiritual feet and your spiritual walk, they disappeared not only in the king's table, they disappeared at the cross. The table covers our shame.

The cross covers our sin. Let me say that again. The table covers our shame, but the cross covers our sin. You know, the greatest parallel that I see may not even be his injuries. Because when I was starting this message, I was going to just kind of zone in on his injuries and his feet being lame. And I realized something in the middle just last night, that this story isn't even about him falling and him having his feet broken. I realized that this wasn't even about Mephibosheth. It wasn't even about whether he was good or bad. You know what it was about? A covenant that was made before he was even born. A covenant is a promise. And David spoke with Jonathan. And Jonathan says, I know you're going to be king. But when you're king, remember me and my children. And make an oath to me that you'll be good. good to my family and to my children and to my children's children. And David made that oath before God, before Mephibosheth was even born. So what I'm trying to tell you is that the reason we are in a place of mercy because an oath was made at the cross 2,000 years ago before we were even born has nothing to do with you, has nothing to do with how good, how bad, how far in sin you've ever been. There's nothing how many times you've cursed God. There's nothing how many times you shot dope into your veins.

There's nothing about how many times you've been in prison or hurt people or done this and that. The oath was already made 2,000 years ago. Lord, Lord, why have you forsaken me? It was already made at the cross. David didn't show kindness because Mephibosheth was mercy. David showed kindness because he already made a covenant with Jonathan, had nothing to do with him. So in other words, Mephibosheth's future rested on a promise someone else made. His future had, remember how it kept saying he gave homage to the king, had nothing to do with the mercy given. His feet being messed up had nothing to do with the mercy given. Him being from Lodabar had nothing to do with the mercy given. The mercy was given because the king made a promise to his father, Jonathan. He made an oath to him. And here's the amazing thing is that Jesus made an oath for us. None of us deserve this. None of us deserve to serve him. None of us deserve to be in worship. None of us deserve to be an usher or greeter. None of us deserve to be preaching or evangelizing. None of us deserve to even vacuum the house of God. None of us deserve any of it.

You don't deserve your family. I don't deserve my family, our children, our grandchildren, our legacy, our life, our breath. None of us deserve it. But we get it because of the promise Jesus made on the cross. And that's the gospel. As I wrap this up, before you and I were ever born, before you and I were ever born, before you and I were ever born, God had already purposed our redemption through Jesus. Jesus established a new covenant, a new promise, a new covenant, a new contract. And our salvation rests on his faithfulness, not ours. See, whether Mephibosheth was faithful or not had nothing to do with it. It was about the promise David made with Jonathan. See, our salvation that we have, see, a lot of times, how many of you ever felt like you let God down? How many of you felt like you let him down this morning already, right? Can you imagine if his mercy, depending on how we felt we deserved it or not, but his mercy was from an oath and a promise he made 2,000 years ago. And that's the amazing thing, guys. Today is the first day of the month. I know there's at least one baptism.

You can go ahead and get ready and come to the side already. We have communion today. What better message to hear through communion than this one right here? For anybody that is here and those that are watching online, before I ask you guys to stand up, I wanna say this. Today's the day of salvation. Tomorrow's not promised. As we celebrate 250 years of this great nation, I want you to remember that because there's people that speak against it, but do you realize the very freedom you have lets you speak against it? But today could be the day that you surrender your life to the Lord. Today is your moment, like Mephibosheth, to stand before the King. Can we all stand? If there is somebody here that you want to surrender your life to the Lord. There's no specific prayer, but the Bible does say to confess with your mouth and your heart that Jesus Christ is Lord and you shall be saved. If you just say it with your mouth, it means nothing. But if you say it with your heart, it means everything. It's a commitment. It's a dedication of yourself. Mephibosheth laid himself at the mercy of the King. We would do it for a car, a car that depreciates the moment you drive off the lot. It loses value by the thousands the second you drive off the lot. If we would do that for a vehicle, how much more for our soul that does not depreciate? It's eternity. Before we have communion, I want to give you an opportunity to surrender your life to Jesus. I just want you to repeat after me, if you need to walk up here, walk up here. You don't have to because God sees you everywhere you're at anyways. Sometimes it's a beautiful thing to walk up to the altar because in essence what you're saying, you're not coming to me. You're coming unto the Lord like Mephibosheth and just repeat after me and say, Lord God, I repent of all my sins. I believe you died on the cross and in three days you rose again. Thank you Lord for paying the cost for me. I deserved it, but you took it and I thank you. Take out my heart of stone and give me a brand new heart. Send me a hunger for you, for your word, for prayer and for fellowship. In Jesus name, amen, amen, amen.

Let's give the Lord a hand. If you prayed that prayer, I want to pray for you in the name of Jesus. But what we need most is the power of the Holy Spirit that is working in our lives so that we can do extraordinary things and great supernatural things in this fallen world. Amen? We need the power of the Holy Spirit. The Greek word for power in Acts 1.8 is dynamis. Where the word dynamita comes from. You know what dynamita is, right? That makes an explosion. Well, it speaks of a supernatural power that changes lives, breaks chains, vanquishes sin, and enables the believer to do the will of God. Because many of us have given our lives to the Lord, yes, glory to God. But we have to learn to serve the Lord with power. The Holy Spirit is in us, and teaches us, and walks with us, but we need the Holy Spirit to fill us with the power of the Holy Spirit so that we can do the work of God. Amen? Do the work of God. The Holy Spirit is not a force or an energy. He is the third person of the Trinity, as I told you. The Holy Spirit was the one who convinced me of sin. And He convinced you of sin. Yes or no? The Holy Spirit put that in our hearts to say, you know what, I messed up, you know what, I'm wrong.

Pero Dios nos las reveló a nosotros por el Espíritu, porque el Espíritu todo lo escudriña a un hombre profundo de Dios. Porque quien de los hombres sabe las cosas del hombre, sino el Espíritu del hombre que está en él. Así tampoco nadie conoce las cosas de Dios. ¿Quién dice? Nadie conoce las cosas de Dios, sino el Espíritu de Dios. Y nosotros no hemos recibido el Espíritu del mundo, sino el Espíritu que proviene de Dios, para que sepamos lo que Dios nos ha concedido. Lo cual también hablamos, no con palabras enseñadas por sabiduría humana, sino con las que enseña el Espíritu, acomodando lo espiritual a lo espiritual. Pero el hombre natural no percibe las cosas que son del Espíritu de Dios, porque para él son locura, y no las puede entender, porque se han de discernir espiritualmente. En cambio, el espiritual juzga todas las cosas, pero él no es juzgado de nadie.

Porque ¿quién conoció la mente del Señor? ¿Quién le instruirá? Nosotros tenemos que la mente de Cristo. Estas fueron personas llenas del Espíritu Santo, que Dios usó a través de los siglos, a través de los años, a través de los tiempos. Y Dios nos quiere usar a nosotros también. Número cuatro. ¿Qué produce el Espíritu Santo hoy? Claro, el Espíritu Santo produce poder para vencer el pecado. Nos ayudan. Pero, ¿sabes? El Espíritu Santo también produce poder para dar testimonio. Así como lo hizo con los discípulos apóstoles en Efecios capítulo 1, 8, cuando recibieron ese poder del Espíritu Santo, hablaron en lenguas y no estaban hablando palabrerías, estaban hablando en otro lenguaje en ese tiempo. Pero no estaban ebrios, estaban llenos del poder del Espíritu Santo y hablaban lenguas de diferentes lenguajes. ¿Amén? Él produce poder también para orar. Romanos capítulo 8, versículo 26 dice, Y de igual manera el Espíritu nos ayuda en nuestra debilidad, pues que hemos de pedir como conviene no lo sabemos, pero el Espíritu mismo intercede por nosotros con gemidos indecibles. Digan conmigo, el Espíritu Santo intercede cuando no sabemos qué pedir. Bueno, también produce el Espíritu Santo poder para amar. Romanos capítulo 5, versículo 5 dice, Y la esperanza no avergüenza, porque el amor de Dios ha sido derramado en nuestros corazones por el Espíritu Santo que nos fue dado. Si tú puedes amar a tu peor enemigo, es por el poder del Espíritu Santo, porque él ha puesto el amor de Dios en tu corazón, porque no es fácil perdonar a alguien que te ha abusado, no es fácil perdonar a alguien que te ha dañado, no es fácil perdonar a alguien que le ha quitado la vida a tu hijo, a tu hija, a tu ser querido, no es fácil. Pero cuando si estás en el Señor, tienes el poder del Espíritu Santo y tienes el amor de Dios que fue derramado en tu corazón por medio del Espíritu Santo para poder perdonar. ¿Amén? Tiempo después, mientras caminaba por una calle de Nueva York, experimentó una profunda llenura del Espíritu Santo. Él escribió lo siguiente, dice, la presencia de Dios fue tan intensa que tuvo que pedirle al Señor que retirara un poco de esa manifestación, porque sentía que no podía soportar tanta gloria. Y hacer cosas grandes para Dios, no cosas grandes para mí, para ti, cosas grandes para Él. Amén? No se trata de mí. Todo lo que hacemos no se trata de mí, no se trata de ti, se trata de Dios. Y a través del Espíritu Santo podemos hacer muchas cosas. Nosotros como iglesia necesitamos más del poder del Espíritu Santo. Amén? Tenemos que ser llenos del poder del Espíritu Santo para ser más efectivos en este mundo caído. El mundo está lleno de religiones. Él no necesita religión, necesita la verdad. Y el mismo Espíritu... Santo de Dios que lleno con poder a las personas del Antiguo Testamento es el mismo Espíritu Santo de Dios es el que levantó a Jesucristo de los muertos y es el mismo Espíritu Santo que está obrando en ti y en mí como creyentes como familia de Dios. Amén? Es el mismo Espíritu Santo, el Espíritu Santo, no hay no hay diferentes Espíritus Santos, solamente hay uno, es una persona. Una persona. Ponte de pie.
