(audience applauding) ♪ In the dark ♪ Amen, Lord, we thank You in this Sunday morning. We pray for You're going to be upon this place, Lord God. We come against anything that is not of God, anything that is demonic or evil. We cast it out in the name of Jesus. Lord, we pray, Lord God, for Your presence to be felt in this place, not only here, but those that are watching through their screens, Lord God, we pray, Lord God, to have a heart of prayer and a heart of worship in this place at all times, not only on Sunday morning, but to have a heart of prayer and worship every single day, Lord God, that when we wake up, we think of You, and when we close our eyes, we think of You, that we lift up our families, that we fight for our families and our children and our grandchildren, Lord God, that we fight for our city, we fight for our nation and our state, Lord, because we know, Lord God, that in the last days You will pour out Your Spirit upon all flesh, Lord God, that is Your Word, that is Your promise, Lord God, and we just pray, Lord God, for us to be a small part of that. Let us be a part of that, Lord. Let us be a part of that. When you say, "Who would do it, Lord God?" Let us say, "I will, I will, I will reach this city, "I will preach the gospel, I will reach my family, "I will walk this walk, Lord."

And we just thank You in Jesus' name. Amen, let's give the Lord a hand. Amen. So it's good to see everyone and really excited. You guys have your Bibles? All right, you already know what to do with those that don't. Just roll your eyes. [ Laughter ] So this is my Bible. It is God's Word to me, my guide and my strength. I bring it ready to learn. I open it with faith in Jesus. I live it with courage. Without it, I grow weak. With it, I grow strong. Today, I bring it, believe it, and obey it in Jesus' name. Amen. All right. We are going to the book of Amos. And it's a really small book, so you're going to struggle finding it like I am. Oh, I found it. Toward the end of the Old Testament, sort of. And it's only a few pages long, so I'll give you a moment. Amos, chapter 5, today's message is titled, "The Day You Wish Never Came." "The Day You Wish Never Came." Amos, chapter 5. I remember my brother showed me this verse years, years ago, when I was new in my walk, and I was blown away by it. Amos, chapter 5, everybody there yet? You have a hard time finding it?

A little bit? And it says, "Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord." Why would you have the day of the Lord? It is darkness and not light. As if a man fled from a lion and a bear met him, or went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall and a serpent bit him. Is not the day of the Lord darkness and not light and gloom with no brightness in it? Wow. See, that seems a contrast in this day and age where like, "Man, I can't wait till Jesus comes back. I want Jesus to come back. I can't wait." But God himself is saying, "Do you even know what you're asking?" And even to the point where he tells him, and we're going to talk about the context of it, he says, "Woe to you who desire that day." In other words, God is saying, "I feel sorry for you if you're waiting for the day. I come back." You know how that saying or people say, "Only God can judge me?" And it's like, "Are you sure you know what you're saying?" See, we can stand before a worldly judge or in a court and we can get coached by our lawyer and he'll tell us what to say, how to dress and how to present yourself. And you just might convince that judge that you're actually a good person. But God, there's no faking with him. So when people say, "Oh, only God can judge me, are you sure you know what you're asking?" So even here, God is telling Israel, God is telling them through Amos and he says, "Tell the people, woe to you if you desire the day of the Lord." And my question is this, is that what if the day that you have been praying for becomes the day you wish never came? We know what it is that we're asking. And in context, the prophet Amos was addressing the northern kingdom of Israel.

See in that time, Israel was no longer united, Israel was split into the northern kingdom and the southern kingdom and it wasn't the best time for Israel anymore. It wasn't the time of David who killed Goliath, of Solomon having all the wisdom. All of that was already done and Israel was now fragmented, a great nation at one time but now we'll split into the north and the south. And people had forgotten about God. The nation of Israel that was the jewel of the entire Middle East, the nation that everybody knew all the surrounding nations like wow, that is the nation that got opened the Red Sea for. That stuff was gone, it was done. And here Amos is and he's addressing the northern kingdom of Israel. See because at that time, Israel had fallen in this rut but they always had this like maybe just maybe we will be a great nation again. Maybe we will have victory again, maybe we'll be a united nation with the southern kingdom of Israel too, maybe some day that we will be that great nation again. I can't help to see the parallel that America's in right now. America seems fragmented, America seems split. I think there's a lot of hopeful people. We should all have hope always. So at this time, Israel wanted to become one but it's like Amos was saying something else. Amos was saying you're asking for the Lord to come back because you think he's going to come and fix things but he's coming with wrath. As a matter of fact he compares it to a lion and a bear and a serpent. They couldn't escape from it. You know, sometimes we don't understand what we're praying for. I think that many times we don't understand what we're praying for. The cost or the loss or the sacrifice, you know, a good example is there. There's times where you guys know my testimony, but my mom would pray for God to save me. She would go in my room, apparently, if I'd find out later and pray over my pillow, pray over my shoes, pray over my stuff.

I didn't know that. It gets at work because I'm here preaching, but I didn't know that. And she would cry out to the Lord, I'm sure for all my brothers, you know, and what happened what happened to me, she says, God, I didn't mean for him to be saved like this. I didn't mean for him to be taken away from us like this, like, like, I was praying to pray to save him, but I didn't know the cost. Because everything that we're praying for, it's a cost. There's a loss and there's a sacrifice. And sometimes we don't think about those things, longing for something that we don't even understand. Israel, they anticipated deliverance about the Messiah was going to come and he was going to come and fix things and make things. And he was going to come in the lineage of King David and David was a great warrior and he killed Goliath and so surely the Messiah is going to come and fix things. He's going to be mighty and powerful and unite the nation one more time. And they expected to be politically liberated, but they didn't understand God's mission. And I want to say this is that if they got it wrong, then what makes us think we got it right? And we say, Lord, come, maybe we don't know what we're asking. In the Gospel of Matthew chapter 24, New Testament, first book of the New Testament, Matthew 24, verse 37, Matthew 24, 37, starting at 37, in the words of Jesus. And they're talking to Jesus, Jesus is preaching and he talks about something that's really interesting and it's starting at Matthew 24, 37, Jesus says for as were the days of Noah. We know Noah built the ark and the flood came. So Jesus talks about this, somebody had asked me, do you really believe the story of Noah? I was like, well, Jesus believed it, that's good enough for me to believe it. I'm not going to argue with Jesus. And he says, for as were the days of Noah, look how he compares it, so will the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood, they were eating and drinking and marrying and

giving in marriage until the day when Noah entered the ark. And they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will the coming of the Son of Man be. So will be the coming of the Son of Man. So Jesus is making a comparison in the same way that the Lord is going to come back, it's just like in the days of Noah, people live their life, they did their thing and all of a sudden came the flood. Ordinary life. How many of you remember the earthquake of 1989, World Series, Battle of the Bay? He said, I ain't that old. Well, you wouldn't want to be around, that was scary. - Good morning. I don't know how many times I've driven in the Bay Area. I don't know how many times I went on the Nimitz Freeway. The Nimitz Freeway is right there. We're kind of by Alameda and Oakland. It was a freeway that was double stacked. If you're going one way is going, you know, and so I think the bottom was going towards San Francisco and the top was leaving if I remember right. (indistinct chatter) Yeah. I don't know how many times I've been on that freeway driving, living my life, doing whatever, thinking I'm going to Pier 39 or whatever it was. And I'm sure there was people on that freeway normal day, ordinary life, nothing strange until it wasn't. The earthquake hit a piece of the Bay Bridge dropped. That freeway collapsed on top of people. Many of us, you remember where you were.

I remember I was in my mom's living room. My daughter was almost going to be born. My niece was asleep in my parents bed. And there was a huge tree outside. And I mean, it just went crazy. It was a really bad earthquake. I remember everybody running out the back door because like I said, toward the front was a huge, I mean, you couldn't even hug the tree. It's how big it was. And my first thought was to grab my niece and run. 9/11. How many of you remember that? Ordinary day, regular day, regular morning, life was normal. People were eating and making plans and doing all this stuff, nothing strange. Life was normal until it wasn't. Tragedies have, I have gone through, tragedies you have gone through, ordinary life, ordinary day, nothing strange, normal day, normal Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, whatever it is. And then life was normal until it wasn't. I mean, yesterday, Brother Johnny, changing his rims, washed his car, took a picture of it, posted it on Facebook, and I put the original rims back on four hours later, slams into a pole, regular day, nothing strange, life was normal until it wasn't. What if the day that you have been praying for becomes the day you wish, never came?

And I'm gonna say this is, how can a church, and when I say church, I mean us. I don't mean this building. How can we know this and speak as of his return, yet not have a life of urgency? How is it that we can tell people, oh, I believe he's coming back. I know he's coming back, but we have no life of urgency. It seems like a contradiction of life. It seems like a contradiction of belief. I mean, how is that, I mean, even myself guilty, how is it that we can do that? Do we really believe he's coming back? Or is it just cliche or something we say as a Christian, something we just talk about? That's a real question. Because how can I say that and not live it or not have an urgency? I have children who don't know Jesus yet. So I'm here preaching that Jesus is coming soon and just nonchalant about it and have my own children still lost. So do I really believe it or not? Or do I think it's just gonna be another day, normal day until it's not? Do we truly believe that this is an eternal decision? If we believe the Bible, we believe there's a heaven. If we believe the Bible, we believe there's a hell. If we believe the Bible, we believe that we don't die. We live eternity and we're gonna live at one of those places.

And the very child that you changed and fed and loved on is gonna spend their eternity in one or the other forever. So do we believe it or not? If your son or your daughter right now was you're standing by a freeway and they can't see because there's a large hunt And they are going 70 miles an hour straight to that cliff. And you're the only one that can warn them. How would we act? How would I act? 'Cause sometimes I'm just like, "Man, I don't wanna offend them." But if they're heading to a cliff, you're gonna be as offensive as you possibly can. Because you loved them. So my thing is, where's that urgency at? Because I'm asking myself, not you, I'm asking myself saying, God, if I really true believe this, and I know this is true. Because if there's no urgency, then maybe it's became a bumper sticker to me. We have children who don't know Jesus yet. We have family who doesn't know Jesus yet. We have loved ones and aunts and uncles and cousins and parents and brothers and sisters. We say, "Jesus is coming soon." And then we pray and we fellowship and Bible study. And honestly, sometimes we become gluttons of scripture. You know, gluttony is just always eating,

always eating, always eating. We can be gluttons of scripture, always eating, wanna learn more. We learn the Hebrew, we learn the Greek, we learn the context, we do Bible studies and it's in that. And we're just becoming glens because we never give it out. And we're spiritual gluttons. Because that's what Christians do. And the gospel becomes an afterthought. And I'm not talking about attendance. I'm talking about the heart. I'm not talking about, oh, you got to be a church every Sunday which I love that we come to the church of Sunday, but this isn't what this is about. What's the heart of the issue? What's the heart of this thing? If we truly believe what the Word of God says, it's, did you know that Jesus warned churches? See, the Bible says that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. So he doesn't change. And if he warned churches then, then he warns churches now. But sometimes we don't wanna hear it. We have selective hearing. You know, the apostle John, he was ostracized, rejected and they couldn't get rid of him. He wouldn't quit preaching the gospel. They actually threw him into boiling oil twice

thinking it would kill him and he didn't die. They didn't, I don't know what he must've looked like, but he didn't stop preaching. They couldn't stop him from preaching. So they're like, we're gonna throw him on the island of Patmos and he just gonna be there by himself, he could go preach to the birds. And they threw him on this island and in the book of Revelation, the Bible says that God gave him a revelation. God revealed something to him. That's why it's called the book of Revelation. And so the apostle John was a pastor of seven pastors. So that's why you could say he was a bishop, a bishop is somebody that's over other pastors. And he had seven churches and Jesus appeared to him and said, write this down because I have something to say to your seven churches. And he wrote this down. If you go to the book of Revelation, we're gonna talk about two of these churches. If you go to the last book of the Bible, Revelation chapter three, we're gonna stay there for both of these examples. Revelation chapter three, starting to verse one. This is the first one. What's interesting is that Revelation is filled with a lot of symbolism. And so a lot of times you have to compare scripture to scripture to try to discern what it is

that is being talked about. And in the context of this, in the verse three, verse one, it says to the angel of the church and sardis. I am led to believe that he's talking to the pastor of that church. The reason I say that is as we read on, it couldn't be an angel he's talking to an angelic being because he has some judgment for that angel. So, So honestly, this is one thing that's interesting is that these seven letters to the churches, to the congregations, hits the pastor first. Which is scary if you're in my position. But in Revelation chapter 3, 1 through 3, it says, "And to the angel of the church in start he's right." So he tells John, "Right this." He says, "The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars." And this is what he says to the church and to the pastor, he says, "I know your works." You have the reputation of being alive, but you're dead. You have the reputation of being alive. There's a lot of movement going on, there's a lot of excitement going on. You have a whole bunch of greeters, you get the people with the biggest smiles, and it just really exciting to be here. And you have this look, he says, "Like you're alive, but you're dead." And Jesus says, "Wake up, wake up and strengthen what remains and is about to die." Where I, Jesus says, "I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God." Remember then what you received and heard, keep it and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief and you will not know at what hour I will come against you. No day, normal life until it's not. Wow. You know, these are his churches.

So you know, another thing that in his day and age, so many Christians are quick to say, false teacher, false days, false, and there is that, don't get me wrong. But a lot of times because a church doesn't sing the songs, your church sings, oh, that's a false church. Because that pastor or this pastor or whatever doesn't do this or does, oh, that's a false church. You know, that's, everywhere is going to be, we're not robots. So we have to be careful because I think a lot of times there is false teaching, but we use it so blanketed that it takes away the power and strength when somebody is false. So we have to be careful with that. What I want to say this is that clearly this was a church that was not doing the will of God, but he didn't say, oh, this is a false church. He didn't say that. He says, you guys got to wake up. You have to wake up and repent. So he's giving them a chance, he's like, you, you, you, you, you have not completed. So you've got some things right. You're doing some things good. You're doing some things that is pleasing to me, but you haven't completed this, wake up and repent. And I believe that he's saying that to the church, then he's still saying it to the church now. I believe he could say that to an individual church like house of rest or whatever other church you see, he could also say to the church as a whole, the church in California, the church in Modesto, the church of America, or the church of the world. And he could be standing a warning saying, what are you doing? Wake up. Because if not, I will come like a thief and you won't know when I'm coming. So we see that here. And also if we go forward to Revelation chapter 3, 14, go down to 14, same chapter.

And he warns another church. He says, starting in 14, and to the angel of the church and laodicea, right, the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God's creation, he says the same thing. He says, I know your works. Because that's the first thing we want to do, right? If somebody wants to question our Christian walk, we're just like, what do you mean? And I give a bunch of groceries away, you know, we want to talk about our works. And I memorize two verses this week. Real quick, we want to revert to our works. And Jesus says, I know your works. I see that you're busy. He says, but you're neither cold nor hot. He says, would that you were either cold or hot? He says, I would like you to be cold or hot. He goes, but because you're lukewarm, you're neither cold or hot, I will spit you out of my mouth. See, a lot of times I remember as a young Christian, I used to think that I've got to be on fire for God and to be cold is not good. See, back then in the city of Laodiceia, I think I've shared it before, there was a spring down, like 20 miles down, that had cold water, and people would go and get water and refresh themselves. And 20 miles that way was a warm spring where people would bring healing properties to. You would go if you were back heard, if you're arthritis or whatever, you would go over there, and it would bring healing. So that would bring healing, and that would bring healing.

So they said, "You know what? Instead of us traveling 20 miles that way for cold water, 20 miles that way for hot water, why don't we pipe it in?" So they have these aqua ducts that are still existing today that you can see, they try to bring in the hot water, they try to bring in the cold water, but by the time it got here wasn't cold anymore, now it was lukewarm, and by the time they brought the hot water in, it was lukewarm. And it was no good for nothing. So when Jesus brought that example to Laodiceia, they knew exactly what he was saying, because they understood the mistake, 'cause the water was no longer hot or cold. And he says, "I'll spit you out of my mouth." And then he quotes them in 17. He says, "For you say, I am rich, I have prospered, "and I need nothing." So this church started believing their own hype. They started believing their own hype, they start to believe their own importance, they start to believe their yes men that are around them and like, "Man, this is a nice church, "this is the biggest place, and this is, "the 19 is here, and oh my gosh, "and you could just preach any old thing. "Why do you even study? "Just go up there and just talk, "and people are gonna love it." And they're just full of themselves.

To the point where they're just like, "Man, I'm rich, "I'm prosperous, we're doing good. "I don't need nothing." And the Lord says, "Really? "You don't need nothing." He says, "Don't you realize that you are wretched "and pitiable and poor and blind and naked?" Fancy buildings and fancy clothes do not impress the Lord. It's the heart. He looks at the heart. He doesn't choose you because you have the most eloquent vocabulary. He doesn't choose you because of this or that. He chooses you because of your heart. He looks at your heart, and I know and understand sometimes what it feels like. You feel judged, you feel rejected, you feel like you look down on because maybe the way you look, or maybe because of your past, or maybe because of your scars, or maybe because of your handicap, or maybe because of whatever. And you start to tear yourself down because how the world sees you, but Jesus doesn't see you that way. He doesn't see you that way. And he says, "I will counsel you." He goes, "I counsel you," in verse 18, to buy from me gold refined by fire.

So you can find gold. You can go to the foothills during the gold rush and you would find gold, but that gold was in pure. You can have this rock this big and think it's gold, but once you put it on fire, once it burns all the impurities out of it, you end up with a little bit of gold because it was gold, but it was filled with impurities. But Jesus says, "Why are you going to the world?" They're gonna sell you something that looks valuable, but it's nothing. He goes, "Why don't you get it from me and it's pure?" You know, I remember years ago, I already settled a long time ago 'cause when I came into ministry and I would see like, I would go in the Bay Area and I'd see these big old billboards and it'd be like, "Come to our church "and the letters of the name of the church are real tiny, "but the face of the husband and wife were real big." And they're just like, and it's like, and I'm just like, "Are you sharing Jesus or are you trying "to get yourself famous?" And I remember thinking in my head, I'm like, "Man, so I guess that's what I gotta do "when I start house arrest.

"I guess I gotta have a billboard." Like that, you know, I don't know. I guess that's what I gotta do. So I actually looked into it and I was like, "How much does it cost for a billboard?" And 99, I was like, "Ooh, that's way too much money." So what do I do? Do I gotta get flyers? I put myself on a bus. You know, these in a bus like this? You know what I mean? Like, I don't know, I don't know what to do. So I started looking into it and the Lord rebuked me. He says, "What are you doing? "What are you doing trying to figure out how to market "and promote, that's the way the world does things?" And he showed me this verse that set me free forever. He says, "Lift me up and I will draw on men unto myself." Lift me up, David, it doesn't cost nothing. tell people about me, lift me up, and I will draw all people unto myself. And I'm like, praise God. That's why I don't trip on that stuff. I'm just gonna lift him up. He says, I counsel you to buy from me gold refined by fire so that you may be rich and white garment so that you may clothe yourself in the shame of your nakedness may not be seen and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. Those who my love, I reprove and discipline.

So be zealous and repent. He told the first church, you haven't completed your stuff but wake up. You know this kind of backtracking a little bit. When he says, I saw a little, let me read it, but I'm going back a little bit. He says, you have the reputation of being alive but you're dead, but strengthen what remains so that doesn't die. That reminds me the other, like a month and a go, month and a half ago, I was looking at my backyard and I'm like, I don't know if maybe I was looking or maybe Sharon pointed out she was, half our yard is dead. What, see, we have these automatic sprinklers, huh? Yeah, time goes fast. We have these automatic sprinklers that go on every other day so our grass is perfect. You know, so I never pay attention. I remember going back there and shoring up. It was like the whole half of one thing was just completely yellow. I'm like, oh my gosh, we rent. I'm like, man, the landlord ain't gonna like that. You know, so it was like, what are we gonna do? So we didn't know what to do and my brother Steve, he does landscaping, he came by and he was trying to fix it, he changed it. I think it's this and this and this. Anyways, we're just like, well, let's get a sprinkler.

Went to A's hardware, bought a sprinkler. Just to bring it back to light 'til we got it fixed. You know, and sure enough, every other day, we started watering it, watering it, watering it. And like within a week and a half, it was just green all over again. I say that because what I don't want to do is make you say, well, man, that's me, I'm yellow. I'm dried up. Well, start to water yourself again. Start to water, get back in the word. The Bible says that when you read the word, it's like the washing of the word. And according to what he said, he says that you have the reputation of being alive but you're dead, wake up and strengthen what remains and is about to die. So back to Leo de Seo. He says in 19, those who I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent, behold, behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him and he with me. That's another thing that got me long time ago because I used to hear this a lot when people would try to reach me for Jesus and they would say, man, God is knocking on your heart. And I say that sometimes it sounds beautiful but honestly, this is to the church. You know what's scary about that?

Why is Jesus having to knock on his own church? Can you imagine Jesus comes and he says, I want to be in there with you, he goes, but I'm locked out. And he says, I stand at the door and knock. Remember, he's talking to the pastor, he's talking to the congregation. Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, what does he say? I will come in and eat with him and he with me. He says, the one who conquers, I will grant to him to sit with me on my throne. And as I also conquered and sat down with my father on his throne, he who has an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the churches. These are two warnings, two examples. He doesn't reject the churches, they belong to him. He loves the church and that's why he rebukes the church. You rebuke your children, you discipline your children because you love them. If you didn't love them, you wouldn't care. And the thing is this, right? We're about to do a grocery giveaway Saturday, right? And I'm all forgiving our groceries, it's awesome. You have 600, 700 people go through that line. That's awesome, but that's not the main objective. I'm all about helping the community, but that's not the main objective. I'm all for having great programs and ministries,

but if it's not getting people discipled, it's not the main objective. And we don't want to just look alive. It's about being alive And in second Timothy Chapter three You Let me know when you have it In second Timothy chapter three starting to verse one Timothy is a student Of Paul he's a young man Paul is raising them up to be a leader Paul is raising them up so he can share the gospel and And he tells him this and he's talking about the last days He says but understand this this is Paul talking to Timothy, but this is the Holy Spirit talking to us He says but understand this Then in the last days there will come times of difficulty So this whole thing about us like oh man is getting hard for Christians and you don't why are you surprised? Scripture said it Bible says it for the last 2000 years. So don't get surprised guys and The last days there will come times of difficulty For people will be lovers of self lovers of money proud arrogant abusive disobedient to their parents ungrateful unholy Heartless Unappeasible slanderous without self-control brutal and not loving good treacherous reckless

Swollen with conceit lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God you how many of you say man That's those horrible things to be right we would all say that is it horrible to be those things and Every Christian will be like yeah, man. That's yeah We don't want to be in grateful and holy arrogant abusive. That's ugly, but let's keep reading verse 5 having the appearance of godliness But denying its power Wait a second so so so me Acting and preaching power but not demonstrating that power you're putting me in the same boat as people who are all these other things as a Church as Christians wait a second if I have the appearance of godliness But I deny the very power of it You're telling me that I'm in the same boat as those who are lovers of self lovers of money and proud and arrogant abusive Disobedient to parents and grateful and holy hardness and appeasable slanders without self-control brutal not loving good treacherous reckless Swollen with conceit lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God Having the appearance like I used to rap a little bit It's still there Having the appearance of godliness, but denying the power still puts us in that I Don't know about you man, but that should that should Check us a little bit So that means if we live our life looking holy appearing holy talking Holy but deny the very power of God then he says avoid those people Having the appearance of godliness is just as bad as that list Whoa The danger is not only that we stop believing that he's coming It is that we stop living as though he's coming Let me say that one again the danger is not that we stop only it's not only that we stop believing he's coming

We believe he's coming but it's that we stop living as though he's coming The appearance of holiness godliness but denying the power you know there's a Parable that Jesus talks about and and the way it probably doesn't completely make sense because Jewish weddings are way different than our weddings but he basically talks about these ten virgins and The groom okay, if you remember Jesus Well traditionally when a man would ask a woman and drink from it, that was her way of saying I do, or yes. I mean, I'm sorry to say yes. So then he would get all happy. And he says, all right, well, she said yes, so I'm going to go and build a house for her. So he would go and get to work. And the quicker he built the house, the quicker he's going to have his wife. So he was just building and building and building, he would build all of them. And then sometimes, by the time he finished a building, it could be a year later, it would be like a midnight. And his homeboys were like, oh, man, we can rest. He was, man, rest, I'm going to go get my wife. Well, let's get her in the morning now, man. I've been building this thing for a whole year. So they never knew when he was going to come. So the bride and the bridesmaids, well, they're just like, man, it's been eight months. It's been 10 months, I bet you he's going to build that. I bet you it's ready, we better be ready. And how are you going to get to him if there's no light? So he would tell, she would tell her wedding party, listen, you know, make sure your lamps are ready.

Make sure there's oil in the lamps because you never know what if tonight's the night, what if he comes tonight and we're not going to be able, we're going to stumble our way, we're not going to be able to see. Let's make sure there's oil in our lamps. And they were doing it month eight every night. Boom, they fill their lamps with oil, but then it's burning. By the morning, oil was gone. They fill up the next day. What did today's the day? What if today's the month nine, month 10, month 11? And they're just like, so some of them, honestly, they understood that they get it. He's making a house, he's going to come back, but it ain't going to be tonight. Man, I don't want to fill my oil. I got to go over there and get the oil and come and bring it and this and that. So five out of the 10 didn't fill their lamps. And the other five did. And Jesus actually said, I'm just going to read it, Matthew 25, verse one. It says, "Then the kingdom of heaven will be like 10 virgins who took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. For when the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them,

but the wise took flask of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, they also became drowsy and they slept. They're like, man, he's never going to come. But at midnight, there was a cry. Here's a bridegroom. Come out to meet him. Then all those virgins rose and trimmed their lamps and the foolish said to the wise, give us some of your oil, give us some of your oil. For our lamps are going to go out, but the wise ones answer saying, well, since that was not enough for us and for you go rather to the dealers and bind for yourself. And while they were going to buy, they left to go buy the bridegroom came and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast and the door was shut. And afterwards, the other virgins came also saying, Lord, Lord, open to us, open to us. But he answered, truly, truly, I say to you, I don't know you. Watch therefore for you know neither the day nor the hour. All of them were ready, not only half of them were prepared. Think about that. All of them were ready, but only half were actually prepared. Let's not make the mistake of that thinking waiting is the same as being ready. 'Cause if I say, you know who's waiting for Jesus to come back, every hand would raise.

And I said, who's ready? We could all be waiting, but not everybody be ready. So we have a choice and it's a choice each individual has to make. Nobody can make the choice for you, not your mom, your dad, not your husband, not your wife. You're gonna stand before the Lord by yourself. You can't blame me, you can't blame nobody around you. You and I are gonna stand before a holy God that sees all things. What if the day that you have been praying for becomes a day you wish never came? I'm not gonna go to it, but there's a passage in the book of Nehemiah where Israel had fallen away and there was a Jewish scholar lawyer named Ezra. And in that book, the Bible says that the people had fallen away, they forgot about God, they forgot about the law, they forgot about all these things and Ezra, the scribe went and dug the scriptures up and he says, gather the people of Israel. He goes because they haven't heard the word in generations. So Ezra goes and he begins to read the law to them. Think about that to these generations that had forgot about God already and he reads the law to them. but they were just going through the motions every year. They were celebrating Passover. They celebrated all these celebrations, the Jewish holidays, but it just became symbolic. But when the people heard the law from the lips of Ezra, the nation of Israel got convicted,

and the Bible says they began to weep. The nation began to weep, and they confessed their sins, and then they began to worship. So they received it. They realized that they were wrong. They realized that somewhere along the line, they forgot, you know what I mean? And it's like, you just forgot. You should be so in love with her, so in love with him. You do all these things, but five years, 10 years, 20 years down the line, it's like, the things you've thought were cute, ain't cute no more. He used to like the way he would leave his socks by the couch. Now do you throw him in the trash? He's just going and he's just like, where are my socks? I think the washing machine, you're throwing them away. And everything just becomes routine, and we can get like that in our walk, you know? And it's like, I hope, I hope, because I truly believe that God is raising up generals in America, because I believe this is the American church, and we have fallen into a rut and we've fallen into cycles, and we just, well, we're a Christian nation, we believe in Jesus, but ain't nobody living for Jesus. And I believe that God is waking up Ezra's to read the law to the people, and now you have a choice to make. And Israel at that time, they wept, they confessed, and they began to worship. Remember when Jesus ascended up after he resurrected, he ascended up. And they were all there listening to Jesus, and they start seeing him, they watch him, and he starts ascending up to heaven. Now he had just gave them orders. He had told them to do something. He had told them to go and preach the gospel to all the nations, making disciples of all the nations. But instead, they're just looking up, and they're like, look at Jesus. And the Bible says all of a sudden, angels appeared, and the angels appeared and said, what are you looking at? Why are you looking up in the same way that he went up is the same way he's coming back to get to work? Basically, I added that part, but basically, that's what the Bible says. Actually in Acts 1 verse 11, it says, and they said, men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus who was taken up from you into heaven will come in the same way as he saw him go out, go as he saw him go into heaven. That was Acts 1 verse 11. He's coming back. So how is he going to find us? How is he going to find you? Because he's coming back. Are we going to be the foolish ones? Are we going to be the wise ones? Because he's coming back. How are we? How is he going to find us? What's going to be? You know, in Matthew 9, 37, then he says through disciples, he says, the harvest is plenty, but the labors are few. What does that mean?

You know, when you plant a field, tomatoes, you know, I grew up around tomatoes, it takes weeks and weeks and weeks, you know, you see them lay the seed down and they lay water and you don't see nothing. I just see dirt. And then a few weeks pass and you start to see little tiny sprouts pop up and then you start to see them get bigger, but you don't see no tomatoes, no tomatoes. And it's crazy because to this day, it's like the field is green and it feels like from one day to the next, all of a sudden the tomatoes are red. I mean, they are ready. And you got to get them now. Like you can't, you can't hesitate, you can't wait. They're going to, they're going to rot. They're going to go bad. You got to pick them when they're ready. It took weeks and weeks and weeks for them to be ready, but once they're ready, they're ready. And that's what Jesus is saying. He's saying, he's the man the harvest is plenty for. There's all kinds of harvest everywhere, but the workers are few that I can't find enough workers to get what it is I need to get. He sees Modesto and he sees fields and Stockton and Sacramento and San Francisco. He sees fields that are ready, but nobody's willing to work. we not? Matter of fact, in Matthew 713, Jesus says, "Enter by the narrow gate, for the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many, for the gate is narrow, and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few." I don't know about you, man, but when Jesus says, "Only a few are going to make it, hmm, can you imagine doing all this for nothing?" Oh, I served Jesus 20 years for nothing because we lived in a way that showed his holiness, but we denied his power. So which response is ours? Are we going to respond the way the people did to Ezra? Are we going to respond in the same way like when Noah and the flood, and people mocked him and made fun of him, and they're like, "What's this guy building his ark?" They were just living their life normal every day, marrying and partying and doing this and doing that, whatever, until they couldn't anymore. Which is the one we're going to do, which is the one we're going to live by, that all of us are going to have to make that choice every single one of us. So which is our response?

I'm going to read Amos again where we started, and he says, "Woe to you who desire the day of the Lord." Why would you have the day of the Lord? It is darkness and not light. As if a man fled from a lion and a bear met him, or went into the house and leaned his hand against the wall, and a serpent bit him, is not the day of the Lord darkness and not light, and gloom with no brightness in it. When Ezra read the law and Israel repented, they chose correctly. They did the right thing. Because in those days when the flood was coming, when they were building the ark, like I said, they were eating and drinking and marrying and giving and marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark. And those that lived in that time, for them guys, it was a normal day until it wasn't. Ordinary life, ordinary day, nothing strange. Life was normal until it wasn't. So will we hear God's word and respond? Or are we going to wait until the door is shut? If Jesus returned today, right now, would it be a day that you have longed for, or the day that you wish never came? Because one of these days, I know you've heard preachers say that all the time, and you're going to hear it, and you're going to hear it until you don't hear it no more. I heard a pastor say one time, he was, you know, the worst part of hell is, he was preaching to this, I was in San Jose, listening to him, I hadn't even started this church yet. And it was like, I don't know, it was a big church, and he asked this question, do you know what the worst part of hell is, and in my mind, I'm like probably the flames, and he was the worst part, is the fact that they're going to be in so much pain to the point where they're burning up and they were just excruciating pain to the point that maybe for a half a second they pass out, hoping they do, just to not feel that for half a second. He was in half a second, they think the start, and they remember being at a church and hearing the preacher say who wants to give your life to the Lord, and they remember that, and for

half a second he thinks it's real, half a second they think it's real, and they want to run to the front because they don't want to be here anymore, only to wake up and pain again. It's the worst part of how -- because you'll be crying and crying if I just got one more chance, one more altar call. Because everything is living and you're living life until it's not. Ordinary life, ordinary day, nothing strange, life is normal until it's not. You know, in Revelation chapter 6 verse 15, I'm going to read it. Now, this is Apostle John, he already got the seven letters to the seven churches, he's revealing all these things to him, and look what Jesus says to the Apostle John about Jesus coming again, in 6 15 he says, "Then the kings of the earth and the great ones and the generals and the rich and the powerful and everyone slave and free, they hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains." Think about that, presidents, kings, powerful people, rich people, billionaires, millionaires, they're hiding in caves, calling to the mountains and the rocks, following us and hiding us from the face of him who was seated on the throne. And from the wrath of the Lamb, for the great day of their wrath has come and who can stand. That's wild to me, that's crazy to me because us, we're just like, well, that's just little to me. But the powerful and those who are in control of the military and those who are presidents and those who hold political power, they're going to hide in caves to the point where they're like, man, I want these rocks to fall on me because Jesus is coming. You know, we were in Phoenix, Arizona this week, and we met some really good people. I put this thing and said, "If you're from Arizona, let us know, message me." And then when they did message, I'm like, "Hey, you guys watch us, you know us, but we don't know you. I want to see your face. Sharon wants to see your face." Meet us at this restaurant, this little Mexican restaurant, and we didn't know who's in a shop, we didn't know, nobody said to show up. You know, it kept felt kind of silly, calling the restaurant saying, "Hey, do you have a

banquet like little thing?" They're like, "Yeah, how many can I see?" They're like, "Well, it was about 50. Put 50 chairs out." I didn't know of anybody, I thought it was just giving me me and Sharon, you know. And this was the last night on the way, this is Friday night. So we get there, and the couple that helped us, they're there, and there's another couple we stayed at their house. So I'm like, "Well, at least that's four people that are going to be there. There'll be six of us." And so we get there, and the tables already said and everything, and man, people started walking in, and they just had these big smiles in their faces, and I'm going to go ahead and wrap this up. I know the worship team wants to know. And they're so excited. They're so excited because sometimes I forget, sometimes our reach and our impact, I guess, I forget, because I'm just me, we're just us, you know, and we just put stuff out there, you know? We don't know. And people were just coming in so excited, and they're coming to see us, and I had some books of mine, because I'm just like, "Oh, please buy a book so I can have gas to get home." You know what I mean? So I had some books there, and people were buying them, a few of them, you know, the identity books, and I had the testimony there, and people were buying them, and then it was weird because they're like, "Can you sign it?" I'm like, "That's weird, but all right." You know? And I put like a little word of encouragement, because it felt weird just putting my name, you know?

"Oh, my god, bless you," you know, just something encouraging, and it was nice. Like, 25 people showed up, and it was really nice because just really, really good people and all of them, I was able to, me and Sharon were just talking to all of them, "Man, you know, when were you saved, are you saved? If not, why not? How about today?" You know what I mean? So people were coming from different, some came because of my music in the past, some came because they were watching us in prison, and they continued watching us, and so they came, like one woman, she was, I was in for five years, I just got out five months ago, you know, and just people just sharing their stories, some of them from the past, some of them, just different walks of life, just sharing their lives, and it was a blessing, it was encouraging. But in the end of the day... And the end of the day, we don't matter that the things we have done don't matter, the things that we accumulate in life, it doesn't matter, the things that we have bought for ourselves. I'm talking about all of us, it doesn't matter, our little collections don't matter, or if you collect hot wheels or purses or shoes or wallets or books or movies or toys, ultimately that's fun to do, whatever, but it doesn't matter and I'm grand scheme of things. And let me say this, in a hundred years, nobody's going to remember your voice or mine. So they might have a picture of you, but they won't know you, they won't know me. My own children's children will have children and they won't know me. I'm just some picture if there's even a picture. They won't know my laugh, they won't know my mannerisms, they won't know anything. I have memories of my grandparents that my children will never know. I can still hear my grandpa on my dad's side because he had a real deep voice, he was thin, he was tall, he always had cowboy boots and a hat all the time. That's my memory, my memory is boots, hat, and a deep voice. But my kids never heard that voice, I can show them the picture, it's just a picture of a guy in a cowboy hat to them, same thing with my grandma and grandpa on my mom's side.

So in a hundred years, everything we do in a cumulative means nothing. And that's not to make it like, man, I just made your Sunday depressing, I'm just giving you some reality. So once I realize that, I realize my goal then is not to be memorable, my goal is to raise up the name of Jesus, because his name does not fade, his voice does not go away, his things are not something that is forgotten, he can't be forgotten, he stands forever. He lasts forever, he's eternal.
