Welcome to another episode on the Unlearn Wisdom podcast with yours truly, Johnny Chang, where each episode is a gospel centered lesson that you could apply to your life today, tomorrow and forevermore. Oh, what's today's episode? Today's episode is episode 45. And we're going to be talking about listening. Wait, what? This. So put your listening ears on. And receptive skills is what we're going to go over. Why is listening important? It really is important because if you don't hear anything and somebody's spitting bars, like what are you going to you're not going to catch it. Literally, literally. So yeah, we're gonna go over all of that guys, listening and receptive skills. I got a quick question. Yes. When you guys put on socks for the day. Do you guys have to find a place to sit? Like do you sit on the edge of your bed? Or do you like stand up? No, I stand up and I balance. I'm a man. So I mean, same here. I was just saying, Why? What was that? Why did you look at me like that? question? Do you sit? No. Because I have my friend that does that at night. He sits at night. I do sit. Sometimes. The question is crazy, because it's so like specific that I've never even thought about it, which means you probably sit because he always thinks of that. No, today I sat because I tried it for the first time. I tried it for the first time to what's so funny. Sure, buddy. No, today was because my closet is far from any sitting place. But today for some reason, oh, yeah, my closet is far.
What's so funny? Explain that you stepped out the closet. Anyways, today, I take the socks up. But for some reason, I was just feeling tired. So I sat down. It's much more pleasant experience. Hmm. So I was like, I understand why people have those little benches in front of their beds. Oh, the the foot lockers. They're called foot lockers. Yeah, I'm like, Oh, I understand that. Now. Now I want one. But Hmm. makes sense. Or you get really deep conversation. I hope you guys got you're such an old man. I remember beating the allegations like literally bro. See no old man, dude. What? Why do you even put so much thought and time into just putting your frickin socks on? I've never spent more than 20 seconds less 10 seconds. Just what about what about long socks when you have to like, you know, quite a long time, but you have to accordion it with the correct. That's exactly what I like. Right. That's exactly what you guys ever hear the same. It's the longer the socks the downer the food. You've heard of that before? They got the ones all the way up to their thighs. That's like a gangster. It's called sock checking. Shout out to my, my Mexican friends, but they literally do that. They sock check you. What about when you go like use a locker or like a spa somewhere you usually sit on the bench. It's such a much more much more pleasant experience. When I go to the gym. I'm not touching that bench. I'm not
gonna lie. I see so much bare bottom on that bench. I don't even put my backpack on the bench. I literally, while my stuff is hanging in the locker, I get dressed, put my socks and shoes on and head out. What gym do you go to? Gold's Gym. Okay, I understand why you wouldn't put it down there. But I mean, you know, where I go, where I go, I don't actually don't have a gym membership. Oh. Okay, anyways, moving on. Moving on. Oh, wait, I have one more thing. I have one more thing. And I think this would just be it made me think about the capabilities of a human. There's this kid, I think he's like 19 years old on Instagram. And his Instagram handle is literally at Luke proof. And what he does is he will learn a skill in a day. So one of the videos is like, I don't train for marathons, and he runs 50 miles in a day. So basically two marathons. It's insane. He also learns the saxophone in a day like learning a song in a day how to do a wheelie on a motorbike in a day, learns the piano wins a pickleball tournament. He's like, I'm good at ping pong. I've never played pickleball learned pickleball wins a tournament like it just like a local amateur tournament. And so over and over and over. He's just doing these things where he's locked in for a day and he completely so funny. What's going on today? This is funny. All but all but but what that what I realized is how much time I waste in a day. And just by locking in like this kid learned acoustic guitar. He like read like three business books. He ran 50 miles. It's like if you just cut out all distractions, you could get so much done in the day. True. And I'm just like, that's the thing in 2026. I'm like, I need to
just get rid of distractions. My pastor to would say that he's like, Oh, you know, he dumbed it down to like two minutes per page average reading. King James has 1500 pages on average 3000 And so if you spend eight hours a day, you could finish the Bible in like a week. And I'm like, dang, that's kind of true. But then obviously who's spending eight hours a day reading the Bible, right? But I could see that. You don't read the Bible eight hours a day? I don't read the Bible eight hours a day. If you do, you got a problem. You got a great problem, no. But yeah, it's eight hours a day. I'm like, man, the pastor, and he's read like triple digits. Not Pastor Kim, the head pastor of our mission, but bro, that's crazy. Would you ever sit there on live stream and read the Bible all the way through? Like try to read it all the way through? I don't think you could do it all the way through. Then you could sleep. You could sleep, but you got to sleep on live. Oh, like a live marathon? Yeah, you wake up, you read the Bible, you're reading it out loud too. It would take you more than a week. I mean, well, we'll keep going. Because you have to read it out loud.
And then, you know, eight hours a day. That's easy. Well, you can go more than eight hours a day. That would be a crazy challenge. Johnny sharing on live stream, reading the Bible. I would do it too. Wow. Shake. I don't want to shake your dirty, disgusting, sick hand, but this counts as it, right? This is proof for the witness. What do I get though? You get to literally be the guy that has read the Bible straight. That's too easy. I'm just kidding. Can somebody look up? Jamie, can you look up how fast someone has read the entire Bible? Let's see. In one, like, I don't know. But how do you even gauge that? They have to sit there and time that? There's probably a Guinness Book of World's record guy just sitting there in a chair. Have you guys seen the fast readers? Where they're like, That's gotta be fake. That's gotta be fake. Ah!
And he's like, what does page 73 say? He's like, eh? He's like, phrases? Okay, so this guy did it in 87 hours. How is that possible? No, it makes sense. Like I said, in a week. Is that about a week? A week is 168 hours, but you wouldn't go the whole time. You wouldn't go straight. Exactly. Yeah, you'd have to sleep and take breaks. It's about a week, 87 hours. You could do it in about a week. My pastor, that pastor said he can read the Bible in a week. Wow. I was like, dang, that's beasty. We're all behind, guys. Yeah, straight up. If you wake up, read the Bible until you go to sleep, and then do that for a week, you could get through it. My goal is to read, complete the Bible. I'm in Psalms currently. Nice, what number? Psalms 23. Whoa, so you just went past 22. 22 is about Jesus. Is it? Yeah, where he gets crucified, and the guy wags his head, and they're mocking him, and he's pierced.
I'm at the part, I remember the verse. Maybe this is in 23. I think it's 23. David is basically like, pluck the enemies out of my, like the eyes out of my, it's kind of like a very violent, I actually wanted to ask you that. Okay. It's like a. Yes, that's in Psalm 22, 21, actually. 23 is. Somewhere around there, but why is it so, basically in Psalms, David is praying to God, or asking God to basically destroy his enemies, but it's like very descriptive of like break their bones, take their eyes out of their head. Yeah, he's mad. Do you know why? Because he was just promised to get the kingdom, and then King Saul threw a spear towards him, and tried to nail, pin him to the wall, and he had to run, he had to cave hop. Psalms was written in caves, but it's the most beautiful book in the Bible, they say, which is crazy, right? In your most chaotic time, where you're promised something, and then God cultivates his patience, cultivates his long-suffering, almost like Job 2.0, he's like pissed, and he's crying out. He's like, God, how long will you not hear my prayers? He says that in Psalm 17, Psalm 16.
He's like, how long will you do this? And like, you know, please come to me. And then he just goes into straight savage mode. Destroy them, take their eyes off, take their ears off, skin them. It's like, dang, like he's just going crazy. Can I tell you how I read that, though? I read that as, oh, this is what he's praying to God for. You get what I'm saying? It's like, oh, that's how you can pray to God? When you're, the way you explain it. You can, though. Yes, yes, yes, but how you're explaining it is he's just venting, whereas I think somebody who's- No, he's not venting, though. He's not, he's asking. He's genuinely asking God, because he's angry with righteous anger. But God doesn't do that, obviously. He's showing him, like, I allowed this to happen. The reason why King Saul fell was because he became king, like, overnight. King David cultivated many years. Like, he promised him something, and then he had to wait for that promise. That's why he was such a good king. You know what they say? Patience. You used to always say it. What?
The harder they rise, the faster they fall. That's King Saul. Dude, that's so fast, though. Oh, that rhymes. The harder they rise, the faster they fall. That's King Saul. Yeah. That's true, though. That is true. That's true. People that blow up overnight also, like, disappear overnight, right? Isn't that true? Yeah. One hit wonders. I see that in the music industry all day long. Crazy. It's because, like, if it's... one singular thing, like, and you haven't spent a long time, like, building that up, then it can just crumble super quickly, too. It's not a sturdy base. Like, if a bunch of people, an artist blows up in a year, and a bunch of people follow them in a year, it's like, unless they just keep doing exactly what they were doing forever, that's not a true fan. Like, they can't really switch up or change anything. Okay, but let me ask you this. It takes still 10 years to make an overnight star. So let's take it like a real, like, what's a really big one hit wonder, we'll say, like, You're Beautiful by James Blunt. It wasn't like James Blunt just picked up the piano that that year and learned he was still trying to be an artist. You get what I'm saying? Sure. So it's the same for Johnny, right? He's 10 years of preaching the gospel. And that's why we're having kind of this explosive growth, right? It's just different levers. Why? It's not like James Blunt wanted to have one hit. The difference is that the 10 years is the sturdy foundation. And James Blunt, I can't, I don't know a lot about what happened. But I'll use another example,
someone like, I don't want to throw any shade, but someone like Ice Spice, it's like, when you blow up that fast, sure, she's probably been in music for a while, but not 10 years. 10 years ago, she was what, like eight. So it's like, I'm just saying, when you blow up that fast, people already just don't like you the next year, you go do something kind of corny with SpongeBob, and everyone hates on it. You don't have like a true support group to defend her. But no, wait, she's the best. No, it's like, you have people who kind of mess with her last year when she was on top. And now it's like, no one's gonna really fight in the comments for Ice Spice. You know, it's just like, I don't know. It's just a random example. But we in the comments fighting for Rice Spice. Ice Rice. Yeah, well, interesting. Yeah. Interesting. Well, so you better not give up. Okay. Oh, I can't. This is interweaved with my life. I give up everything before I give up the gospel. So try me. Wait, so why are you all stuffed up? What happened? I got sickies, man. I don't know what the hell happened. I go to Dalit, meet 7000 people, then come home and have 7000 bacteria in my body. Shut up. I just it's so bad. It's like, I literally was dying. I haven't been knocked down by this for a while. And I feel like TikTok is listening. Because I go on TikTok. And they're like, adrenovirus and this. And it's like, there's this weird virus that's going around. And I've been sick for seven years. And it's like, what the hell, dude? Legit. I feel it though. Like I was I was fevered out. I was chills. I was like, body was aching. And I was fighting my freaking internet company because they were scamming me. And then I went to another internet company that scammed me again. And then I was like, really sad. And I don't know if that stressed me out and made me even sicker. But I can't shake it. You should hit up Dr. Wakely. He'll probably tell you what to do. Yeah, but he's he will. Yeah. But the other thing I was gonna say was, apparently there's a strain of flu because Justin said he's getting his butt kicked too. Yeah. Yeah. I hope I didn't get you sick, Justy. I'm sorry if you see this. Yeah. Do you guys get flu shots every year? Nope. No, they're they're the scam. They they hurt. Well, what do they say? They like they they give you AIDS or whatever. It's a crazy autism. Yeah, I don't know about you guys. Don't get aluminum. I don't know. I don't get them. Me neither. Yeah. Like I was I was home for Christmas and my family was sitting I was like, Oh, the flu is really bad this year. There's a new strain like
everyone make sure to get your have you gotten it yet? Have you gotten it? Like half of them did. And I'm like, I'm not gonna lie. I haven't gotten a flu shot like since I left home at 18. Yeah, it's been 12 years. I've never walked myself into like a Walgreens to get a flu shot. Here's the thing about the flu shot. They're they're making it based off last year's flu. So the flu this year is a different flu. Really? Yeah, it's like it's not doing nothing. It's kind of like a MERS or whatever where it's like the suit. It's like too many vaccines make you give it brings the super virus out. Gospel out is officially live. Wait, what happened in, are you willing to tell the story about the T-shirt in Dallas? Yeah, I'll tell the T-shirt story. Okay, yeah, tell the T-shirt story. Oh, that was the receptive skills story. Yeah, yeah, I knew it. I knew there was some lesson. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I knew it. I told him there was a whole lesson in this pod. Man. He's right again. Yes, yes! Celebrate. Incredible, he's mad. He's always saying it again. Should I tell them why we're going back and forth? Yeah. Basically, Johnny told me this incredible story and he was like, oh, I was on main stage telling everybody about what happened to me and when I went to winter retreat, it was this really good story. It was about receptive skills and listening. I was like, dude, hey, are you willing to tell this on the podcast? He's like, yeah. I'm like, okay, that's the next episode. He's like, all right. He's like, I'll write it down.
Today we show up, there's two questions on the outline and I'm like, I don't really remember it either, but I don't remember it being this. And he was like, there was no story. This is it. And then it just clicked in all our minds now. Sorry, guys. But great, now you're about to unlock the whole episode. So let's go. So basically, I was in Dallas and I did a conference. We do a conference every year where we bring out four to 5,000 people. All over the world. All over the world. This time around, there was close to 7,000. There was like 6,000 something, right? And so we'll say 7,000. So I get there. I'm only gonna go there for like two days. I'm like, I got this work. We gotta catch up. Like we work. You guys don't know, we work through the holidays too. Like it's crazy over here. So I'm like, all right, I'm gonna go. I'm gonna just do this little conference. I'm not gonna speak. I'm gonna go there and I'm gonna chill and just meet up with all the Core of the Heart people. Maybe see some baptisms.
Great. I get there. My flight leaves out at 7 p.m. on the 26th, or the 25th, I'm sorry. I get there on the 24th. Flight leaves out on the 25th. All of a sudden, the head honcho and Pastor Kim come up to me. Hey, Johnny, you need to give your testimony. You need to go up there. And I was like, but my flight is at seven and the testimony time starts at seven. Okay, we'll figure it out, you know? All right, so I cancel my flight. You know, I go and I try to, like I'm spending two hours trying to figure it out. Long story short, my flight gets moved. Everything's good. Everything's kosher. Now, mind you, I didn't come with any expectation to be speaking. So I had clothes just like this. Big oversized tee, linen pants. You know, Pastor Kim was like, take off your chains. I was like, no problem. Took off my chains and I get up there and they're like running it through me. Okay, what are you gonna say? What are you gonna talk about? Et cetera, et cetera.
Cool, everything's good. Right when I get up, there's a pastor there who's the MC of the whole place. And he's like a big head honcho, one of the top dogs in New York too. And as soon as I get there, he gives me this look. Like this. Yeah. Up and down look. And I'm like, yes, Pastor? He's like, why you choose that shirt to wear? And I'm like, what do you mean? And then Pastor John kinda like steps in to kinda see and he's like, oh, it's okay. And then he's like, oh, he's like looking around and he's like, hey, brother, you. Now mind you, they're like moving these stages around. They're doing big performances. They're dancing, they're rehearsing all day. This shirt is a collared shirt. It's one of our, you know, like collared, just polo shirts, right? And bro is drenched. I'm looking at him, I'm like, bro is drenched, dude. And young Korean kid drenched. He's like, here, give him your shirt. And I was like, no, thank you, right? And I'm like, no. And then, so he takes off his shirt, he gives it to me and it just smells like straight up B.O.
No disrespect, but I'm just being honest. It smells like B.O. And I'm like, immediately I have thoughts. Like, why am I doing this? You know, like you guys asked me to come up here. Like, I'm me. I've never been here. I'm like asking, like, where's Pastor Kim? You know, like, but Pastor Kim's already outside with the head honchos sitting in the front. And I just look at Pastor John and Pastor John's face is like, please. Like, it's like this face of like, Johnny, please. Don't crash out. Yeah, don't crash out. And I'm like. Right there, I was like, all right, you know? And so I just wore it and it was stinky. And I was like, dang, bro, I'd be smelling like onions and all that. And so I'm like, all right, whatever. And so I go up there and then it just I just sit there and I feel frustrated because I'm like, I'm me, you know, like you can't stop me from being me. But right then and there, I started to like one thought came to me. Wow, Johnny, you listen to Satan so well. Like, why don't you like see that he's an emcee? He's got to set it up a certain way. And then like it may feel other pastors feel some type of way because people already feel some type of way about me. Like, why do I get these special treatment?
And like I get frustrated when I don't get the special treatment and et cetera, et cetera. Right. And so I end up just just having that heart. And then what the pastor, he he slapped my head. Right. He's like, good job. Let's go up there. I finally get to hear your testimony and that obviously rubbed me the wrong way because I'm like, who at this church hasn't heard my testimony? Right. We're literally famous for this. But I again, I took I realized that everything was just information that he was like, there's a set schedule. There's a protocol we must follow. It's nothing personal. I'm just telling you, Johnny, you should wear this. And that and I took it as that. And then after that, it just shrugged it off. Stronger man than me. And so I get up there, I tell my testimony. And, you know, when he goes, you know, we have Johnny Chang from L.A. Church, everyone goes nuts. The whole place is like raw right there. And I'm like, whoa, there's a lot of people here from core of the heart. And so what I was told was like 20 percent, something like that was like core of the heart people, which is nuts, dude, which is like fourteen hundred people, something like that. Right. If you do the math. So I'm over here like, yo, this is crazy. And right then I was able to not have my own thoughts in it, but thought about like, OK, why did they tell me to come up here? How thankful would the other people be? Like when I remove myself out of it and stop listening to self
and started to listen to what Pastor John said, what Pastor Kim said. He said, this will be really good for you. Pastor John said, I've been praying about this. Like, Johnny, just go up there. And, you know, obviously went up, killed it on stage, came back down. And even that pastor in the end shook my hand and was like, man, good job, bro. Like, good job. And so I realize a lot of people don't know who I am even in amongst our church, because we're in 90 different countries, two thousand two hundred churches collectively. Not everybody's going to know me. And maybe they see me online and they see some type of thing, just like other people who think I'm a heretic or whatever. Right. They don't know who I am. And for me to think that, you know, they know me and they should know me was number one already incorrect heart posture. And I didn't I'm getting mad that they're not hearing me out when I didn't even want to hear them out. So that just made me and I was telling this story to Jeremy. And he's like, bro, this is we got to talk about this, because it's so true. Foundationally, receptive skills. Listening is the most important thing. You have to listen to hear the gospel. If you don't, if you're listening just to respond, then that's not humility, that's pride and pride makes us deaf. Fear also makes us deaf. Arrogance makes us deaf. And so a lot of people I notice nowadays are there. Call him Helen Keller. You can't see and you can't hear.
Dang, that's crazy. But like literally a lot of people I'm noticing are their issue is not anything struggling with sin. Their struggle is listening, is listening to understand, listening to connect. That's their problem. They're listening to respond. Most people are listening. They're just waiting their turn to speak. And it's kind of crazy. You can tell so much too. Like I can't stand it, but you can tell when someone you're talking to is just waiting for their turn to speak, not listening to it all, not going to lie. I don't even want to call out who in my life is guilty of this, but yeah. Don't, don't call it out. No, it's not you. It wasn't you. It wasn't you, but it's not us. We actually all held it. Honestly, I must say we're all very receptive to everything from Sleepy Watt to everybody here. We're literally very receptive. I, as a leader, I can see that. In that story, if I was in your shoes, I can understand of, you know, it's on your program, it's on your time, I'll move my flight, I'll do all those things, whatever you guys want, when it comes down to the sweaty shirt, it's just gross. You know what I'm saying? So like, that's where I just kind of be like, Hey, look, well, that's where I put myself aside, right? Where I'm like, it's crunch time. They're on a schedule.
It's I can't, you know what I mean? I could have probably fought more and be like, I'm going to wear my shirt, but like, I understand that it's just for professionalism. It's just for other people. Like, and when I can think about other people, which I've been trained to do, then it doesn't really become a problem. And it's weird, when I get up there and the adrenaline's there, you're not worried about the smell, you're like, oh, obviously, when you're pissed, you nitpick everything. But also I could see like, bro, it's not that big of a deal. Like, you're up there for 15 minutes, like you can't wear a nasty shirt. Oh, Johnny, you need this. It's so crazy. Did you, were you wearing an undershirt? No, it was, I was just bare raw, bro. Hey, whoever, you and him have made a connection. No, not at all. I made a hateful connection. No, but, yeah. Oh no, what were you going to say? Was he just shirtless on the side? No, no, no. Then he had his, he had his another shirt that he wore too, but that other shirt was also, you know, that one was also nasty. Yeah. I think he gave me the, the lesser of both like evils, you know, but yeah, it was okay. That is the special treatment. It's like, they want you to look good in front of everyone to the point where they're going to take someone's shirt off their own back to make sure that you can be well represented. Yeah, why couldn't we see it that way? And it's like, um, lesson learned on your part that like, even when they tell you you're not going to speak, pack a nice shirt. Yeah. That's, that's low key what he was saying. That pastor was like, why do you, like, you've been here, you know, what time it is.
We're very like up and down and quick and, you know, impulsive. Why are you not? And of course I can argue that Jeremy, Jeremy is like soul. You can, he goes like, like, this is what he's doing. And then when he swallows, he, when he like swallows his pride, you guys will notice he'll go like this. Let's be going to my happy place. Oh my God. I have a place that I'm like landing in a field of daisies and there's puppies and kittens jumping on me and little baby ducklings. That's so funny. But yeah, no, it's not like, like they don't, they didn't want you to have to wear a smelly shirt. Of course. If it was up to him, you would have like had one. It just had to happen. And you're a, you're a team player. It's crunch time. Yeah. Guys be a team player. At the end of the day, I gained their hearts too. I know those pastors feel some type of way about me. And it's actually out of good intention in that they're scared that I'm going to get high hearted. A lot of people in our church have hit stages where they do like call the seams, maybe not here, but like in Korea. And they lost it all. They think they're tough, hot ish, like straight up. And so I get it. They're also kind of sensitive towards that. But, but that's why pastor John's like, you got to get up there. Like he was begging me. I literally didn't want to go up there. Core of the heart people. You guys know I was there.
I was stressing out a little. I was like, man, I don't want to go up there. They're like, they're all happy. But I was like, you're not the one that has to go up in front of that many people in front of the head honcho. I was like, and I put it in perspective for them. I was like, guys, tell me if it's true or not. I'm like, that's like you guys going up and I'm sitting in the crowd, just watching you. Like that feels a different type of pressure. It's like, I don't like preaching in front of pastor Kim because it's like, I know he's going to be like, ah, Johnny, you could have said this. You could have said that. Like, even if he doesn't, I'm like, bro, that's my master right there. You know? Like, I don't know. It's extra heavy. And then not only him, but all the big dogs were there. The one that started the mission, the one that's from New York. I mean, I'm just like, oh my gosh, dude, if this is too much pressure for me, you know, I'm good when, when no one, it's like you being in front of your family, preaching the gospel to your family versus some random person on the street. It's way easier to talk to that random person because they can't sit there and go, oh, well, yeah. Jeremy, what happened to all the ayahuasca things that you did about God now? And then Jeremy has to go like this. Wait, so finish what you're saying. You said something really interesting at the end where you said it's not even that people are struggling with sin. They struggle with receptive skills. It's difficult for people because we're just taught to want to say something. I was on Bryce Crawford's podcast. And in that, in that episode of the Christian Avengers, where I met him, like literally I spoke six times, maybe five times maximum. I don't waste my words and I just, whatever. And there was a lot of times where I wanted to say something and someone would literally just jump in and I, and Bryce is young, but I kudos to him. He noticed, he's like, there was a time where like you and Angela from Girls Gone Bible were going to say something and you're like, go ahead, sister.
And then like you just let her, he's like, I kind of peeped that. And I realized, like, how did you have that type of discernment to be like, it's not about me. You guys can go ahead. You know, when all of us were like kind of ego, like checking, ego checking. Right. And so I was like, um, it's because we have to learn that like listening is always more powerful than actually speaking. When you listen, people start to like leak out a lot of things about themselves without even realizing it. So I've just been taught probably from gang culture, as well as the Bible, that man, you like loose lips sink ships, but also like loose lips reveal hearts. 100% reveals your heart, what's in your subconscious, it reveals it all. So I've just learned to be like, listen, and most people don't even have that. They're just so quick to like, share, share, share, share, share. And I've seen tapes of people snitching and I'm just like, bro is just sharing everything that he doesn't need to share. Lawyers, what's the first thing they tell you? I don't know, I've never been in trouble, but I heard from my lawyer friends, they say, don't say anything. Plead the fifth, ask for your lawyer, and seek legal counsel, and that's it. Ask for counsel, and that's it. But even the smallest things, I've seen people get locked away for saying, yeah, I was in the area, but it was just this, and it got them. They were like, they pinned it on, and ten years later, they're like, they weren't actually there, it was like something that happened, and it's just crazy, so yeah. How do you know if you're truly listening to someone, you know what I'm saying? Because I think it's like, yeah, I'm hearing the words that are coming out of your mouth, but I don't think that's what you mean, right? It's not just hearing whatever you're saying. Yeah, I think it's, first and foremost, listening is not agreement. A lot of people think listening is I agree with you, that means it's confirmation. Listening is all about humility.
It's having the maturity to be like, I may not agree with you, but I hear what you're saying, right? And so, you don't have to agree in order to listen, right? A lot of the times, for example, I use the analogy of getting pulled over. There's times where you guys know you're not going the speed limit, or the cop made a mistake, honestly. And they're like, okay, you know how fast, you made the wrong turn. You're like, what, I don't think I did. But you heard them, even though you don't agree with it, you listen. In the same context, it's like, I don't know about that, I'm not there, but I respect you enough to hear you out. That's what listening is, it's just hearing a person out. And listening in Koni Greek is a koe, which is an auditory hearing of a person, and also a spiritual listening of a person. It's like, what is this person trying to say? Not what am I hearing, and what am I interpreting, and what am I assuming you're saying? What are you actually saying? That's what hearing is, and yeah. I doubt that you just got that right off the bat. So at what point in your walk, or what point in your life where you were like a click for me? This experience taught me what listening was. Okay, so I learned it after I released control. So that was about three to four years into my walk. Because I used to try to control the conversation, because when I didn't have control of it, then two things. I would be vulnerable, and I would be scared that they would misunderstand me. So that's why I say fear makes you deaf. Because when you're listening to someone,
the way I would hear them was I would take everything offensively. I would feel like what they're saying is attacking my identity and my character. Even though if it's just like, hey, bro, can you pick up the dishes? Immediately, I'll be like, are you saying that I'm lazy? Like right there, I would interpret those things. And so what I realized Pastor Kim would teach me was, Johnny, you're trying to control situations because you're operating off of fear. And if you don't control something, then you feel like you're out of control, and then it's not in control, and then you feel like you're in danger. And so when I learned to trust God more, I stopped controlling the conversation. It was a byproduct. It didn't make me try to listen more. I just was like, hey, even if these people don't understand me, God, you understand me, and you will make every crooked path straight. You will make every ear hear. You will make everything that's misunderstood clear as day. You will make chaotic things peaceful. And when I trusted him, I wasn't like, you gotta understand me. Before, that was my thing. You gotta understand, though. You gotta understand, and people would make fun of me. You gotta understand, though. Like, what do you mean, bro? And now it's, do you understand? Understand? Understand? Before, it's, you gotta understand. Now it's like, understand? So it's different, right? I've changed, so I was just smiling like I've heard that many times.
But yeah, so genuinely, I think it was more of when I stopped being fearful, and when I stopped taking everything personal and more constructive. And there's times where you still struggle. Like, I struggle with it time to time, where I'm just like, is this person saying that, right? And like, Jeremy says things like, you're speaking to Gollum. And I don't know who Gollum is, but he's like, Johnny, you, there's times where like, he'll say something, and he's very direct. And I'll be like, is bro trying to say something? But what I do is I try to confirm with him, right? Guys, also listening is confirmation. It's a really good exercise to go, hey, I'm hearing this. Is this what you're saying? That in itself clears up everything. But we don't do that. We make statements. Oh, but you said this. No, no, no. Are you saying this? That instead of you said this, are you saying this is going to be really clear. And do it in that tone he used. Are you saying this? That's going to make somebody really excited to really get through it. No, that's how you do it to me. No, hey, hey, hey, check this out. Is that what you were saying to me earlier? Oh no, Mr. Mr. Golem. So if you haven't seen Lord of the Rings, there's a little character.
So as Frodo, whole premise of the movies, he's trying to destroy this evil ring. And he meets this little like goblin character, Smeagol, and Smeagol wants to help him, you know, he knows where to get the ring to how to destroy the ring. But Smeagol has a dark side and he turns into Gollum and it's like the second voice in his head. So we're all Smeagol, Smeagol. No, yeah, we're all Smeagol. We want to have a dark, but you have like heavy Gollum and Smeagol. Turn off the podcast. Gollum's like Gollum is like, they'll be at the same time. So like Gollum was like, no, kill them. And he's like, no, but I love them. He's like, no, kill them and take the ring. I must kill them. And he like snaps out of it. Igor was like, what the hell is going on? Yeah. That's you. I'm sorry. So the analogy is we all have a little Smeagol or a lot of Gollum inside of us. Um, okay. My next question. He's gonna get a phone call like tonight. Like, Hey, when you said that. Um, okay. So basically when you said you can listen to someone without agreeing with them, it's just fully trying to hear what they're actually saying instead of your interpretation. And then using, um, using clarifying language to make sure that you heard them correctly. And also last thing, most people listen like lawyers, like they're, they're
listening to leverage people. They're not listening to actually like, listen, they're listening to go. What did you leak? Oh yeah. Okay. All right. Yeah. So remember, and they're all nice. Like, remember when you said last week, like, but it's literally like they're persecuting and prosecuting people. They listen like DAs and judges. Like they don't listen to sit there and be like, how can I help this person? What are they actually saying right now? Right. So it's, it's kind of crazy guys. Don't listen to. You know, listening requires like not arguing, but just humility. Right. So the other side of that is not only are people listening to like get you in something or kind of listening for like something bad, but another thing that stops people from being able to truly listen is because they're only listening for themselves. Like, how does this affect me? And I can notice in people, the second they realize it has nothing to do with them or it doesn't affect them, they check it. They're done listening. They're over it. And it's just like, that'll prevent someone from listening right away. If you're only listening, how can this help me? How can this affect me?
And you're not just actually like an opportunistic type of vibe, selfish, man, Mr. Krabs, straight up. That's crazy. But a lot of the times too, people are, are listening to like win, right? Like artillery, right? So our job is not to win arguments. Our job is to win souls. And in order to win a soul, you have to have humility. Jesus honestly was amazing at this. He knew everything. He could sense people, what they're thinking. Like he would check them. Why in your souls do you say this, that, and the third, but he always goes, what do you seek? What do you look for? What are you trying to understand? He even asked questions. If he knew like beforehand what that person wanted, why would he ask them questions? Because he wants relatability. When a person feels heard, 90% of the arguments die, honestly. But also on the, on the other end, relationships die when communication dies, right? And so it's like communicating is not just you speak what you want. I speak what I want. Parallel monologue. It's always a dialogue. Okay. What are you trying to say?
Like, what are you, I'm hearing this. Am I correct? Okay. Let me try to figure it out with you. Instead of like fighting with each other, you're like fighting for the greater good and fighting for each other to then bring clarity into the stuff. Like if you're arguing or you feel argumentative, the best thing to do is to close your mouth, not close your ears and not close your heart. Bars. Clippy. Our skis. How do you love someone without trying to fix them? Hmm. You love them towards God. You don't love them and become their God. So a lot of people, they try to fix people by absorbing their pain too, and trying to be their savior. Jesus absorbed all of our pain at the cross and he is the savior for us. So your job is to always like pastor Kim would do with me is like, Johnny, what do you think Jesus would do in this predicament? And there's times where I was straight up, tell him, I don't care what Jesus would do. It's not going to help me right now. Pastor Wayne, one star Yelp review, you know, like I'll be angry at him, but little things like that, after I would get through my emotional rollercoaster. And I would sit down and I would reflect like, why does pastor always tell me to think about Jesus? Oh, because he's not trying to hurt me, he's trying to heal me. And so how to love people is not you being God for them
and you being the doormat, but you being the doorway and kind of like the arrow, you're just a sign that points to Jesus. And you have to also think, what would God do in this predicament? At the very foundation, that's better than what would I do who's like flawed and finite and limited. What would God do in this predicament? Is there any Bible verse that, or is there any like parable? So pastors always do that with me, like, Johnny, you know, King Saul, he did this. And the reason why King Saul did that was because of this. And in this situation, that's kind of your situation, right? And it really unlocks it without feeling attacked, yes. But I've also seen, one caveat I'd give is something that I've seen you do with somebody was their person wasn't really about God. And you were like, show, stop talking about God. So I think that there's a lot of times. Well, yeah, it's not a one size fits all. Which is why I think the better answer is like, you kind of need somebody like yourself above to be able to be like, okay, what's the situation? What's the other person like? Do this instead. But that's part of listening. Like if you guys just are able to listen
and hear people's heart posture, most people are angry because they're misunderstood. Not really because they're angry at that specific thing. That's just a wall that they're hiding behind, right? Because they don't wanna seem weak, but or un, how do I say, unappreciated, right? And so you have to be able to make people feel that, hey, you're appreciated here. It happened recently in our team, where someone was working really hard and they worked very hard by themselves. And the right thing, I just saw it immediately. And I was like, dude, this is something that he has to be validated, not in a like boost him up and BS and lie, cause you gotta be honest. But I could see where I didn't appreciate this person in our team. And so I immediately apologized because I was like, dang, I know how it feels to work your butt off. And people were like, what, you're supposed to do that. That's a bad feeling. Yes, I'm supposed to do it, but dang, I can't get some like brownie points. I can't like, what's gonna motivate me too to feel appreciated. I can't just sit here and be a robot. I'm a human with real emotions, right? And so I just sat there and I was like, hey bro, like I understand.
And I see where you're at. And that's my bad. I wasn't speaking for the team directly. And it really like in real time, they saw it too. It diffuses situation right away. It went from like smiling to like, bro, you're hella aggro. Like, do you understand? I never said that to like, man, thank you. Like, I got it. Yeah, let's work together. And it was beautiful. And then we went mini golfing after that. It was like, it was cool, you know? We could have, it went from like putting like golf clubs to like, you know, we were about to beat each other over the head basically. It was beautiful, you know, it was beautiful. A lot of times is like people are in this community and they're searching for spiritual truth. How do you, how can you tell if someone is truly speaking biblical truth? And I know your answer, but there's a followup to this. Yeah. How do I know if someone's speaking biblical truth? Yeah. Is if it all, if, cause all scripture in the Bible has one main character, it's Jesus Christ. So all scripture has to point to Jesus.
And Jesus literally says, I am the truth, the life, right? So if he is the truth, meaning only truth, then all scripture we can conclude has to point to Jesus Christ. Now, when a person is sitting there and all they're talking about is their truth and their opinion and their subjective or, you know, relative opinion or thought or whatever, then you gotta kind of have to be cautious about it. You don't have to chop them down, but you have to take things with the grain of salt. And then you have to be like, hey, can we go to the Bible? Or like, can we do that? And let's say in a real world scenario, if it was me and I see that this person doesn't like God, doesn't even care about God, and all they're speaking about is themselves, you as a person who is saved have a bigger responsibility to be like, ah, they're not there yet. So we can't argue from a point of authority. We can't be like, I know God and you don't, and I'm living better than you, so you should follow me. Because that's just gonna make people feel less than. Your job is to go, hey, I hear you and I understand. And to maybe give them analogies or experiences in your life where you felt like you were right about something and then realize that you were wrong when you followed your thoughts.
Because this concept that we teach, which is so simple and biblical, but so hard for people to grasp, is don't trust your thoughts and your feelings can lie to you. Now everyone knows that, but they still have an issue. with applying that to their lives. And it's because they don't genuinely have God. So you can't go up to somebody and go, because you don't have God, you can't differentiate your thoughts from the word of God, like, obviously you can say that, but they're going to be like, what, like, what does that mean? Like, it doesn't make sense. So instead I would approach people with like, Hey, there's a time where I followed myself and everything in my heart and it led me to misery. And so I'm just, I'm just making sure, I just want you to make sure that, you know, as, as a word of advice, that maybe not everything that you're thinking, like just make sure that it's, it's, it's correct to the T. Like, are you sure you're a hundred percent on it? And that's the test. Some of them will go, yes, I'm a hundred percent sure. I know. Then, you know, okay. They're not ready. It's probably best to stop the convo right there and let them get out whatever they want to get out. That's up to you. Or if they go, huh, you're right, then you can push a little deeper. Right. But then it's, it's again, it takes a lot of skill to do this type of stuff.
It's not just going to be like, oh yeah. It's Johnny said this. Okay. I could apply this. That's where blame Johnny Chang was born. People will go there and I'll be like, guys, you guys are dirt because you're believers and then you'll go and you'll tell your wife who doesn't believe, babe, you're dirt. And then the, the Johnny said, Johnny said, and then now they're like, I hate Johnny. And then they're coming back in the main stage and they're going, Johnny, how come they don't want to come to main stage? Uh, yeah, probably because you freaking showed him a tattooed freak called you dirt and then called them dirt. And now they're uprooting your whole family. You would never call them dirt before. Now you're calling them dirt, dirt gang now. And they're over here. Like, I hate you. And I hate whoever taught you. You're an idiot. And so that's what happens. And they get frustrated. And so it's like, oh, and they just like forced got me, you know, they're like, oh, okay. You know? So yeah, we're hiring guys. Core of the heart is hiring, but listen carefully. We're not just building a company. We're building one of the fastest growing Christian communities in the world.

just reach out, tell us what you're good at. Maybe it'll work. Genuinely. I can't do this without a team. So I'm very thankful for anyone who supports the mission. I look forward to hearing from you guys. Let's role play the other side. What should someone do if they don't feel like they're being truly heard? Hmm. If you don't feel like you're truly being heard, um, you can always bring it up to them. Biblically speaking, it says you can guard your heart, but you can also speak. But if you truly feel like their heart posture is, I don't want to hear you and I'm talking over you address that. So like Jesus did the same thing where he spoke and people didn't hear him. And then he straight up addressed it. Why? Like when someone smacked them in the face, he was like, why did you hit me? Like, it's a, it's an honest question and don't say anything. Right. Pastor was a master at this. I would sit there and I would just dump whatever I was. And then he would be like, but Johnny, how come when I speak, you're not really listening and he just stays quiet, but I am listening, but I'm like, go. And then he's like, but you're not listening though. If you did listen, here's, here's what it is. And he would explain it and then I would cut them off. And he's like, do you understand? Like, I'm not even finished with what I'm saying. And you're like cutting me off.
And honestly, at times I wouldn't even realize that I was doing that. Right. And so if you see a person who's not listening to you, do you just address it? Hey, I'm, I'm kind of feeling like you're not listening to me right now. Right. And when they go, I am, then you'd be like, but you notice how, like I'm saying you're not, and you're still saying what you think you are like, can, do you want to, do you want to know like what I feel or you just, you don't really like care because it seems like anyone who says I am listening is, is incorrect. Number one, because if a per, if you cared about that person, number one, you would listen to them. You would be like, oh, okay. I feel like I'm listening, but they don't feel like I am. So let me put that down. Let me try to hear what they're saying, let me reiterate, but most people they don't do that. What they hear, you're not listening, they take it defensively. So, you gotta be like, you gotta preface a lot of things. You gotta go, I'm not trying to like, say that you're not, like, you're doing this on purpose, but I don't feel heard right now. These words are very powerful, because they'll be like, okay, cool, I get it. Versus, you're not listening to me. There's a way that you guys have to kind of deliver it. So, try it out, try it out. Go to people and be like, hey, I feel like, I don't think this is intentional, but I don't feel like I'm really heard. I almost feel like I'm getting cut off. So, how do we, like, rectify this? What is the outcome? Like, what is the solution to this, essentially? Number one. Number two, even if you do that, let's say you guys apply that. There's times where they're still not gonna listen, right?
And there's times where people hearing this will have a hardened heart, too. Oh, you don't know my husband. I've tried that. I can't say that to him, blah, blah, blah. Of course, we know this. We understand. But during that time, who is the person that actually listens to you most? Jesus and God. So, a lot of times, I felt like even pastor wasn't listening to me. I felt like certain brothers weren't listening to me. I felt like when I do Sunday school with the kids back then, they wouldn't listen to me. So, what am I supposed to do? Yell at them more? Make my point more? When did that ever work? If anything, that stressed me out and it cost me my peace. Instead, I went to God. And it's something about going to God that even though they don't listen, it's different. You kind of offload it in another way, right? It's kind of like think about like working out. Some people, they may not be able to hit the gym, but they'll swim. And it still does something for your heart. In the same way, when you're preaching, when you're not able to unload or speak to somebody, when you go and you speak to God, it really just like almost like rolls off of you. Like the stress kind of just goes away because you're talking to God. And over time, I saw my mom become masterful at this. My mom could not talk to my dad. My dad was straight up a narcissist, straight up hitter. Every time she'd say something, he talked with his fists and his hands, literally. Feets, hands, everything, right?
And my mom would always go to God. There's times where I'd walk in and my mom like crying to God. Like, please, God. And she'll finish her prayer always. She doesn't like stop praying when I come in the room. And she'll say things like, you said that my husband is the world's best husband. And you also died for him, Lord. Please, like give him the heart to listen as well. And I would like judge her. But then I realized she would literally go to God about everything. That's what kept my mom sane. That's what kept my mom not holding on to trauma, not building resentment for my dad. Because every time she would go and pray. And now she says something crazy in her testimonies all the time. She says, I'm so thankful that God didn't give me a man that I could rely on because he would have became my God. And so through that, the lesson here is maybe that person isn't listening. But it's not necessarily a bad thing. It could get you to go to God who's always listening and build a stronger relationship that bleeds into all other relationships. So, yeah. So a lot of times people will be saying something and you'll feel a certain way. Pastor will be saying something and you're like, you guys aren't hearing what I'm saying. Now your answer is take it to God. But what is also another way? Are there any other ways where you can check whatever you're thinking? Is there a way to vet what you're thinking to validate? Is it unwarranted or should I go and clarify with this person outside of just going to God? Yes. So is it something that's pushing you closer to God or pushing you away from God? That is something that you have to clarify.
So if they're saying something and it's true, but it's affecting your feelings, but it is pushing you towards God, I think that's okay. I think that should be received. But if it's something that's comfortable, even if it's something that's comfortable, but it's pushing you away from Jesus and God, then you have to also address that too. So the line here is what they're saying. And when I hear what they're saying, are they listening to me? Is them listening to me pushing me closer to God or away from God? And this also is important because a lot of people also get frustrated when people don't hear them out. But you also have to be honest to people who are speaking to others and want others to listen to them. Is this also pushing them closer to God? When you're framing your questions and your answers, they have to always be kind of gospel-centered or salvific, as we say. But most people, they're more like, I just want to get my information out there. I just want to answer. And so it's normal to be like, I don't need to listen to you respectfully if you're trying to push me away. away from God. You know what I mean? Like, I don't need to, and I've had friends, homies do this. Like, hey bro, like, doesn't it say in the Bible, like, you have to like, you're your brother's keeper and like, you're your fam, like, you know, your friends mean everything and you gotta help them. Well, I'm lonely right now and I wanna go to the club and you're not coming with me to the club. And I'm just like. Checkmate. Bro, are you serious?
And I'm like, bro, you know what you're doing? No, I'm not, I don't know what I'm doing. What do you mean? Like, I just want you to come kick it. Like, why you do that, bro? Like, I feel sad. Like, aren't you supposed to be here to like, help me? Like, they weaponize things, you know? And that's when you have to draw the line too and be like, hey, respectfully, I don't wanna hear, I'm not gonna hear all of that. Like, I made my decision. If you gotta sit with it and get angry and be mad at me and feel some type of way, handle your business. But we can't compromise because you feel some type of way. You're trying to push me away from my walk. Like, I love you and I don't want you to be depressed, but I also can't allow your depression to affect me and then pull me off of my walk and get me into depression. Like, what the heck? That would be crabs in a bucket, you know what I mean? That's misery loving company. No, I wanna lift you out of it. You can come to this side, I can't go to that side. And so again, it's so many layers to this, but it's important to, the center line has to be Jesus Christ. Are you pushing or not? So let's say you go to God.
What happens if you don't feel like you're getting a clear signal from God and a direction to go? Should you just trust your gut and go for it? No, never trust your gut, but do go for it. Go for it with this heart of, hey God, I don't hear anything, but I do know you will make my crooked path straight. And obviously try your best to think about what is God's heart in all of this. And that's why we have our communities and why I have my pastor. Ask other people too. Get a general consensus. Hey guys, this is what I think I should do. And talk to people who are gospel centered, right? Go to church, ask in the main stages, ask on live, ask the mods that we have. Like, hey, this is what I'm struggling with. I don't know if I should take this job or not take this job. I don't know if I should follow this or follow that, but I'm gonna, what do you think about it? And even if they don't have answers, then make a decision and trust that God will bless that. Whether, like I said, it's always a lesson or a blessing. If you, you're gonna learn something from it, right? Even if you fall down from it, you're gonna learn from the fall. Even if you succeed from it,
you're gonna learn from the success. You're gonna learn something, so yeah. Does God penalize you for choosing your flesh? Mm, oh my gosh. This is why we get so many unfollows. Unfollows? Why? People unfollow when it's stuff like this. Really? Because I'm gonna say something that people don't like, but I'm gonna answer it though. Go ahead, just do it. Well, so that's my main question. It's like, let's say you have a decision to make and you just decide to follow your flesh. Does God penalize you for it? And I could give you a- I don't think he's gonna penalize it, but I think that God is gonna be like, hey, if you go out there and you wear a chain in South Central and you're bling bling, it's not God who allowed you to get robbed, okay? Like, we have to be smart. And obviously, if you follow the flesh, God says when sin ripens, destruction. So you may, just like you're driving a car and you may run a red a couple times and not get T-bone, but do it a thousand times, I'm pretty sure you'll get hit once. It's like, that's what God is.
He's gonna tell you, hey, you have free will. I don't have to penalize you. You're gonna penalize yourself because when you walk into that venomous pit of sin, when you follow your flesh, you're only gonna produce destruction. You're gonna produce despair. It's only gonna be ultimately leads you to sadness and misery and guilt and all that. So I don't think it's God who penalizes you. I think it's God who's gonna allow you in that penalizing and pain to then give it back to him and return back to him. So yes, yes, I would say yes and no. Yes, he penalizes, but not in the way like, you messed up, you naughty boy. Okay, you're gonna get a spanking. Like, not necessarily. He disciplines by going, hey, I'm gonna let you be God for a day and I'm gonna show you why you leading yourself is probably not the smartest thing to do. And I would say in that way, he chastises us. He does allow things to mess up in our lives. He does allow us to get sick. He will allow us to get addicted, let's say. Let's say you get addicted. He will allow you to lose your house and things like that for you to learn these types of things. Can you say that that's God penalizing you
or is it more that you chose your way above what God wanted and after numerous times of warning you, right? And so that's what Egypt did. The Pharaoh hardened his heart numerous times and then God was like, all right, I'm just gonna harden it for you and since this is what you want, right? And he just gives it up to you. So yeah. I'm ready for God to penalize me. This guy, he had to get struck. Hey, sit over there. He's about the lightning bolts just about to shoot through the window. Well, what if that, so, so like, you know, even the way that we're describing this, it sounds pretty intense. What if it's something like, you know, I like to have a drink here and there. Have a drink here and there then get canceled again. Being sober mind is, is good, obviously, right? The Bible commands this, but not so much where it's legalism, where it's like, you're literally evil as hell and you committed the most unforgivable sin by drinking. There's only one unforgivable sin. And that's blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which is taking God's name in vain. What that means is not just saying, OMG, it's taking Matthew 1 21, which is Jesus. A virgin shall have a son. She shall name him Jesus. He shall save his people for his sins, from his sins, from their sins. And so God is saying, if you take Jesus's name, which is God with us who came down and died for us and rose again for us. And you still say that you have sins and you're not forgiven and you don't
believe in the forgiveness of the blood, then that means you're not forgiven. And that's the only thing. And the Holy Spirit is a witness to this. It says in Hebrews 10 15 to this new covenant. People don't believe that. They think they can get to heaven with their works. They think that they can do everything with their own works. Plus, plus God, like they can help God in some kind of way and they trust themselves. So that's the only unforgivable sin. But drinking, all those other things, if you're struggling with it, God understands the struggle. He won't penalize you for the struggle. He will step into the struggle, but you have to give it up to him. You have to then sit there and be like, all right, God, you know that I'm struggling and I can't help it. And there's a lot of people, even pastors who struggle with lust. So does that mean that if they struggle with lust until they die, they're not going to get to heaven. If that's the case, what about King Solomon? What about people who like David, who was a man after God's own heart, literally slept with Bathsheba and then murdered Uriah and then made Bathsheba his wife. Like bro, literally stole, he's Mr. Steal Your Girl, literally stole her and then had multiple kids with her. And then was what? Like God obviously penalized him. Yes, sure. Maybe in the first, with his kid dying, you know, that seven day old kid. But afterwards he gave him Solomon, which was extremely blessed. And obviously Solomon also fell into lust and all these different things. But Apple doesn't fall far from the tree, a hundred percent. And it's just how it is that the struggle does not disqualify you. Contrary to what legalism teaches, the struggling does not, even if you indulge in your struggle, whatever that happens, the most important thing is, do you utilize that struggle to then turn back to God? Right.
And this, this perfectionist Christianity where it's like, you have God, you're not supposed to struggle. Show me one person that doesn't struggle with something. I'll wait. The only person I can show you is Jesus Christ. Other than that, there's no other Jesuses. There's only one Christ. If you preach another Christ or you try to act like another Christ, then you are cursed and damned. Right? So it's, it's, it's normal to struggle. It's normal to be like, I mess up. It's not normal to be like, Oh, I'm a good person and I should try my best not to struggle and therefore become my own God. And then judge everybody else. Even though I struggle for their struggles, the Bible names a few people like John, like Jesus. He names a few things. He calls people deceivers. He calls them brood of vipers, which is snakes. He calls them hypocrites. He calls them like deceivers. Right. And so hypocrite is someone who acts like they do something and then, or like penalize other people for doing something that they also do. Right. They condemn others while they're still doing that and actively living like that. Why does he call that? Those are the people that Jesus doesn't like. They're super hypocritical. Like all of you guys are leveled by grace. We're all interconnected by sin. How can you say you're better than somebody because you don't drink? Right. It's like, I asked this question in main stage, would you guys, there's a, there's a person I was mentoring. She was 37 years old and I had to stop mentoring her because she was a virgin man. She was like, I, you stopped. I knew you were going to cut me off. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. Everyone grill. Keep going. He always does. Keep going. Keep going. But basically she was 37 years old.
She was a virgin and she came with all the right words. You know, I'm a virgin. I'm so yielded to God. I'm surrendered to God. I step into my salvation. God has given me provision over my life. He's given me promise over my life and all this woo, wah, whatever. Great. Amazing. Buzzwords, Christian keywords, ding, ding, ding, ding. You're hitting them all. Great. But the one thing she leaked was, you know, Johnny, I kind of judge you. Why? Because you talk about like you, you. kind of go on secular platforms like soft white underbelly, I wouldn't have went on. You know what he does? He interviews prostitutes. And what he does is he's in the world. He said it himself, he's like agnostic. He doesn't care about God and yada, yada, yada. And I'm just like, interesting, okay. And you know, we're called like to be very, like to be away from the world, you know? And so I'm, and that's why I'm a virgin. Like I've kept that and I'm not like these harlots, like the prostitutes he interviews who just open their legs up for everybody. And listen, we all have trauma and like trauma is not an excuse to go and do whatever you want. I have trauma. I've been, you know, hurt, but I don't go. I take it to God, you know? And right there, brothers and sisters, although outwardly she's saying she's humble and whatever, her heart posture is judgmental towards everybody else.
Her heart posture is look at me. I'm a virgin. I have my V card and for this long, and I'm a good person and I'm gonna get to heaven. So do you know what I said to her? I said, there's plenty of women who are virgins and burning in hell. She kind of just like, her eyes opened up. She's like, where? I was like, there's a story of the 10 virgins, five foolish, five wise. The foolish ones went to hell, right? And it's a very good scripture because when you get a chance, you should read it. They had the Holy Spirit in them, which is the fire, right, and the oil, and these other ones did not. And so in the same way, a lot of people, they have this, they look like they're spiritual outwardly like Pharisees, but inwardly, they have no fruit. They have no humility. They have no patience. They have no love, no compassion. Respectfully, are you a sinner? I asked that girl. She's like, yeah, I do sin, of course, and I repent every day for my sins. Great, now you sinned, and let's say you had your sin of whatever it was, and she's like, well, I had a sin where I told a lie recently, but it was to protect someone.
Like it's just constant, like trying to make yourself look. It was to protect somebody. I didn't want that person to get fired, so I said that. I'm like, but then wouldn't it be right that if she messed up, you should have told the manager because that's kind of costing, it's an opportunity cost. It's liability, et cetera. She kind of like froze up, and I said, neither here nor there. What I'm trying to get at is if you're a sinner, you stand in front of God, and she's a sinner, and she stands in front of God, right? Like let's say some harlot who sleeps around, an OnlyFans model, whatever. Doesn't it make you guys the same? And she's like, yeah, but God knows my heart. Like he knows that I wouldn't wanna do that, but like they wanna do that, and I was like, how do you know they wanna do that, number one? Well, they continuously do it, but that doesn't mean that someone wants to do it. A drug addict could be getting dragged by something and like lose their whole life. I know many of them who've cried to me and said, I don't wanna do this, but I can't defeat this. It's not just by sheer willpower. You receive grace to do that, right? But at the same time, look at how you're parading the fact that you're a virgin, and you're better than people because of that.
No, we're only better because of the blood of Jesus. She's like, amen, it is because of the, I'm like, no, it's not though. You led with, I'm not like them. Yes, I mess up, but I'm not like them, and I showed her scripture, where the guy was like, thank you, Father God, he's a Pharisee. Yes, although I'm a sinner, I'm not like the publican, I'm not like the politician, I'm not like the harlot, I'm not like the back biters, I'm not like other sinners. But God says, which one went down and was saved was the one who smote his chest and said, I'm a dirty, evil sinner. God, please help me, I can't do anything for myself. And so, she was like, oh yeah, this will be the last time that we have a one-on-one. Dang. You know, because I revealed to her that her righteousness was self-righteousness, not of God, and she thought that she was good, even though she said all the buzzwords, even though she seemed so surrendered and so whatever, but in her heart was, I'm better than you guys because I'm a virgin. Who do you guys think God is gonna honor? The person who's like, I know I struggle, and that's why I need you, God, versus I have you, God, and they suck for struggling and I'm better than them. Like, you think God is gonna honor a prideful heart?
Get the faith out of here if you think so. That's straight baloney, it's baloney, right? So, yeah. Cut the baloney, as they say. How come it feels like most people are interpreting the Bible wrong? You get what I'm saying? Like, how come the church you're a part of and the pastors that you're with and how you came up, you guys read the Bible and you get that message and then there's a whole swath of the internet that comes after you or another side of Christianity that's so based on works and performance. And I mean, I was raised on that side too, so what do you think about it that there's people that probably have read the Bible the exact same amount of times as you and still is getting a different message? Why do you think that is? I think one word is, well, two things. Listening, receptive skills is a big part of it and coming to the end of yourselves, which is. what the Bible claims, humility. Johnny, I've come to the end of myself. I've been in the church my whole life. If you say that, then you know you didn't come to the end of yourself. A humble person never calls themselves humble. I was just role-playing. Man, I'm just role-playing too.
No, but honestly though, a lot of people who are, they're not humble, that's why. When they read the Bible, works does one thing. It puts all the glory on you. And people love the ego stroke. I get it. When you sit there and you're like, I'm not gonna watch porn anymore. I'm not gonna struggle anymore. And you actually overcome it. Bro, does that feel good? When you obtain something off of your own willpower and then slap faith over it and be like, yes, look at me. It really does feel nice. But the issue here is they don't realize that all of that was by grace too. If Jesus doesn't give us this word to overcome, how would we even overcome, right? Everything is borrowed by God and should be accredited to God. But people love to take the credit. It's built into, it's our default setting. Kids from a young age are competitive. Human beings are competitive by nature. And why are we so big on like making money, winning sports, achieving this prize? Even in gaming, like you become number one, get this many, what's KD ratio? Is it kill death ratio, right? It's like, why is all that important?
Because we wanna be like, yo, I obtained something that you couldn't do. It's all competitive. It's all performative. So people who read the Bible with humanistic like lens and like logic, that's why it's so like different than what we're taught. The Bible says those who are lost need to be found. Those who are sick need a physician. That was funny that he coughed up to that line. Ironic. I hate the scratchiness. But it's because people are trying to be the main character. The Bible is not about you. Of course it records you in hearts like you have, but it's all pointing in Jesus Christ. Now, we've had people in our Bible class 17 times, 20 times, 25 times I've had it. We have pastors in our Bible class. The one thing that they don't realize though is that they didn't realize until they came here was, wow, it really is not about me at all. Ephesians 2, eight to nine sums it up so well. It is by grace through faith that you are saved not of any works, lest any man boast. So God knew that people will boast, meaning they'll parade themselves, right? They'll pride themselves in works. There's only two types of people in this world. There's the Cain's and the Abel.
Cain, he came with his own sacrifice from the sweat of his brow and the fruit of his hands to give it to God. And Abel was like, I can't do anything. My name literally means useless and unknown. I bring something called a sacrifice, an animal sacrifice, a substitute in my place. I can't do it. Why do you need someone to sub? What's a sub for when you tag someone in, right? When you have somebody on the bench, it's because you can't do it. You're tired now. You gotta get out and they gotta jump in for you. In the same stroke, God is saying, I have a sub for you, an eternal substitute, which is Jesus. But that would mean though that you need to surrender and you need to step down and you need to sit bench. You need to ride the bench. And a lot of people don't wanna ride the bench. In their lives, they're starters. No, I did this. I did that. Look at me, man. God gave me this. God gave me that. And then they start to show their own works. And why this gospel is so threatening is because grace levels the playing field. It literally takes all of the spotlight off of you
and it places it onto God. And it says, you didn't do anything. You're nothing but a donkey that I ride on. You're nothing but a vessel. A vessel is a container. A container doesn't produce. It doesn't create. It just carries. So you're supposed to carry God's glory, oh, look at me, I produced this. So everything is performative and productive in that I gotta do this, I gotta do that. So that's why they can't understand. And then listening skills is vital because anyone with half a brain or the ears to hear would be like, Johnny's right. He's literally pointing to Jesus. But the ones who don't want Jesus deep down, who want pride and ego, you guys are listening. You guys can't hear it. Because what this means is, dang, you're basically saying that I'm not special. What I'm saying is nobody's special. And in the same stroke, we are special. We're not special because we didn't do anything without Jesus giving us the power to even wake up in the morning. We're not gonna wake up. We are also special in that God has given us life and he's literally died for us.
He chose us. God chose us over his own son. He forsook his own son for us. So you can now move with boldness, but also humility. A lot of people just wanna be bold with no humility. And that's all pride, all self-righteousness. And so we teach in our Bible, in our Bible class, we teach at our church that you are literally dirt. You're nothing. You're the lowest value. Not to ruin your confidence, but to have this heart to distrust yourself and only lean on God. Your substance is God. It's not you. You can't sustain yourself, right? And that's why God says you're a vessel. You're not the root. You're not even the fruit. You're the branch that connects the two. God just has to use our bodies, but it would be stupid for the branch to think, I produce the fruit. No, the vine and the roots produce it. You just bear it. Sure, you're right off of the coattail, right? And so that's just what it is. That's why people can't understand the Bible is because they're only looking at it from the lens of self and the lens of works
and the lens of legalism. The biggest tool that Satan has nowadays is not going out in the clubs and sinfulness and stuff. It's you being your own master, you producing all the fruit so that you miss the true fruit who hung on the cross, the fruit of the womb, Luke 141, Jesus Christ. You just have to be in the position of Jesus and you'll miss him completely. That's why God says in Matthew 7, 21 to 23, the scariest verses in the Bible. Not everyone who says, Lord, Lord, shall enter my kingdom, but those who do the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many in those days, he says, a lot of people will say, haven't we prophesied prophecy, which is biblical, in your name? Haven't we casted out devils, deliverance, demons in your name? Haven't we done many wonderful works in your name, works in your name? Notice how Jesus doesn't say, you didn't do enough and depart from me. He says, I never knew you. I don't know who you are. How is God, who's omniscient and omnipotent, everywhere all the time, knows everything all the time, saying that he doesn't know you because you don't have a relationship with him? All you came to him was, look at what I did in your name.
Look at what I did in your name. It's like, look at me, me, me. God's like, where am I in all of this, though? I'm nowhere to be found, and that means you never knew about me because you never edified me, and you didn't even care about a relationship with me. You were trying to prove to me in our relationship how much you're better, and that's where you're gonna get dunked in hell, basically. So people don't even realize that. He never says you weren't obedient enough. He never says you didn't do enough. He says, you don't know who I am. We don't have a relationship, broski, and if that's the case, how are you gonna get to heaven? How are you gonna come to my house as a stranger? Like, I'm not gonna let you in and give you a room. I don't even know you like that, and that's what it is. That wraps up this part and this segment of the episode. I hope you guys saw it fruitful, and if you did, comment what you thought was really good. Maybe what I like is when you guys drop a bar that I say, and you're like, that hit. And normally, guys, when you write that, those are the comments that get the most likes. I noticed that. Leave a little timestamp so other people can find it. So write that, and thank you guys for always supporting us, too,
as we start the new year, too. But with that being said, we have something. Yes, before we go. Wait, wait, wait, we always gotta remind people. Just check your phone right now. Did you like, comment, and subscribe? Are you subscribed? You gotta hit the subscribe thing. Check if you're subscribed. I saw some video where it was like, I grew this, it was like millions and millions of followers, and he said, and the main thing I did is, I just told people to subscribe. Yeah, it's true. And I was just like, ah. Guys, subscribing is gonna help us so much. We hit 700K on Giant Chang Live, too. Nice. Wow. That's crazy. Almost a million on every platform. I just realized I want keeping them all of them. No, you can't take one These are like nice I have that little side room at my house and I realize Well, no, we definitely need to upgrade because it's so funny. They can't really see this I almost want to pick up the camera and show them but it's like this tiny tiny space behind the camera Yeah, all the cameras are jammed into one area. There's a desk of the computer jammed in, you know, we've had yeah Pick up pick up one of these cameras here and just just tilt it around for a second There we go, so show show this tiny little gap we're working with Whoa Okay, so We've had guests Well, you just record the space Okay, we've had guests crawl up through that space so Johnny's mom Johnny's brother Santa Cruz Medicinals Literally crawling over wires like tiptoeing into the space over Johnny's legs Like this is totally a makeshift studio in this like small area. That's not even supposed to be anything at the stairs It's like a little office loft. I don't know but we made it work ladies. Oh my gosh But we made it work. We definitely made it work like it sleeps on the computer there's just like Show the nest of cords I Get on a mic right here, but as you can see there's like bags hanging right there cord Desk, yeah, and then all the all the stuff. Lady! I legit gave it up multiple times. Ran away from church, went back to the streets multiple times to then sit there and go, dang, this ain't it. People are always comparing horizontally. We need to start comparing vertically. If you're sitting there and you're only focused on gifts,
it doesn't have to be Christmas. If you had to sum up in one piece of advice of focus and discipline, it's just being the word daily at some amount. Yes. And we're back. What'd you guys think? What was your favorite moments of this podcast? Oh, that's a good thing to comment. In the last 45 episodes. That was so nice. That was so good. Yeah, that was such a good. That was so nice. Yeah. That was so good. It brings back so much memories. It's kind of crazy what we went through. Like, we did a lot to get here. We're doing a lot to get to the other spot. It's never ending, but it's all worth it. And it's honestly because of you guys, too. Like, I honestly was, you guys are like amazing. If we didn't have your support, whether it's financially, emotionally, spiritually rooting us on, like, we would literally just be like three people just yapping for nothing, you know? It's like, so we really appreciate all the original COTH members, the new COTH members, even the ones who are just, you know, not COTH members. Like, preaching the gospel is really what we all want to do.
And so we will always level up and upgrade because for me, one, I obviously want everything to kind of be perfect. But we will try to, you know, achieve that. But I also know that you guys would like that. I want you guys to have a congregation that you're proud of because we are literally preaching a message that not a lot of people are. It's almost like an inclusive club where it's like, dang, we have the actual gospel. I was talking about this on main stage where a lot of people came in originally, like, seeking community and like, yeah, learning wisdom. But then what they found was like family and the gospel. And so it was really cool, like, and everyone just kind of were sharing their hearts today. And I was very thankful to everybody. But it made me think too, like, wow, we did a lot in this year and a half that most people won't do even in a lifetime. And so it's still hard for me to conceptualize that. And I always talk to Jeremy about this too. But what I am thankful is nonetheless is the gratitude that I have for you guys, you know, sticking with us through all the allegations of people saying we're this, that, and a third to us being under a microscope to even the chastisement where at times I know that my truth can be a little bit assertive and sometimes abrasive. And it makes people feel a little sensitive. But to just sit here and be like, all of that came out of here.
You know, it's such a beautiful thing. So thank you guys. And I honestly appreciate you guys for that, man. Be blessed for real. I forgot to mention it was crazy that 20 percent of the retreat was got people at the good news thing. And then the other thing that I wanted to say was like if I love reading the comments where it's like my favorite thing on Monday. Yeah. Like this has now become a habit in people's. Well, that's what's crazy that I want to say is I can't believe I'm so proud of us and you guys for the fact that we haven't missed a single episode since this show started, which is really insane. I haven't missed a single one. I did. I missed one. Oh, yeah. But that's it. So like we've planned ahead. We've done different things. We've done this is hard to produce. We have not not posted since we've started posting, which is insane. I see a lot of even my favorite podcast taking winter vacations, breaks here and there like now we've kept the place. I think one thing we really live up to here and not to float our boats or like fluff our feathers is consistency. Like we are consistent. Honestly, we're consistent here. Like whether it's the live streams, whether it's the constant posts, like we are consistent. It's kind of crazy. It's kind of crazy. Oh, well, what I'll also say that I realized in that consistency, because I was thinking when I was thinking about putting this segment,
like the last episode in the studio, I was thinking about how it is insane that we've filmed this consistently every single week, once a week. And on that note, like I've been able to consistently spend two to three hours a week off my phone. True. In conversation with real people. And then go get a nice meal with real friends. Yeah, it's just crazy. We've been able to do that once a week for the past year. Hallelujah. It's really, really crazy. That's beautiful. Completely no phone time. It's like not a lot of people have. That's pretty good. Yeah. I mean, I'd say that. Yeah, my least favorite part was hanging out with you for that. Oh, my time. What? The consistency stuff I totally agree with. Jump up. No, no, no. But I'm just kidding. But what I wanted to say is, hey, roll editor, roll the montage of my gut disappearing. I wore this same shirt and it was like I remember it was like we didn't have to make that montage. I don't have one to roll. Oh, well, speaking of rolls. My. I got skin. here at the end of this podcast. Low hanging fruit. Every time we talk about something so deep, Jeremy's just with a little. Yesterday, there was a guy who came back to church after like feeling super sad, dude. He went to Vietnam, bro was feeling so sad.
Like he was defeated, deflated, bro. And he was like, Johnny, he's like telling me all these things, man. I realized something about myself and I was just so empty. He came back from Vietnam. Jeremy, like I'm thinking Jeremy's gonna say something. He goes, how much was the pho out there? No, I did not say that. I did not say that. I said, no, I said, how much better is the pho in Vietnam? He's like, it's cheaper. I'm like, I don't care about the price. Is it better? No, but it doesn't help your case much. But what is it? But it doesn't matter. Do you understand? You freaking con me. I know, I know, I know. But still, you got the question wrong. I don't care about the price. I love how your clarification didn't change anything for you. I just wanted to get the question wrong. It's crazy. That's so funny. Little dubs is crazy. Guys, you gotta have that mentality of Jeremy. Stacking my wins. To just win a little bit.
Like some kids, he's like a kid. You know how kids are? No, no, there's kids who are like, I've seen kids who are like, okay, you gotta go to sleep at nine o'clock. And they'll be like, one more minute. And then they get all happy. Jeremy is that kid. He has to get that one, it's literally just 60 seconds. And he's like, yeah, I feel like I won the 60 seconds. No, listen, this is what real spiritual life is. Is winning every battle. I never lose. That's right. And even if they think that I've lost, maybe I've lost the battle, but I haven't lost the war. That's right. Jeremy's never wrong. He's either right or lying. Yeah, all right, guys. All right, see you later. Thanks. Appreciate you guys. See you guys for the rest of this year. Like, comment, subscribe. Subscribe. Subscribe. Office call. What comments should they leave? Should they leave something?
About the end of the podcast? No, no, no. The last episode was great. No, comment, I can't. You guys really are ending the podcast. Oh, or you guys are leaving. Something about leaving. Get creative. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Something like that. You guys got it. Yeah, yeah, clickbait. Now you guys know it's the clickbait crew. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You guys are the clickbait crew at this point. And you gotta clickbait everybody. Clickbait crew. Just write the craziest comments. All different ones. People will be like, what is going on in this house? That's so good. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. There's for sure bots. Yeah. I didn't know you guys did nudity. Hey, or also I took like Johnny's feet shots. You're a weirdo. Do you understand that? You're a weirdo. It's certified J cat.
God made those two things on the bottom of your legs. Yeah, but not for you to photograph them. I didn't photograph them. I recorded them on video for the fans. Somebody out there is gonna appreciate them. Hey, comment if you appreciate. All right, guys. Appreciate you guys. Hey, I'll show them with no socks on. Stop. All right. Bye guys. Bye.
