Welcome to another episode on the Unlearned Wisdom podcast with yours truly, Johnny, aka Juanito Changalito, where each episode is a gospel centered lesson that you can apply to your life today. And today we're talking about Christmas for Christians. Can you guys, can Christians celebrate, celebrate, celebrate, celebrate Christmas? Can they? I don't know, Jeremy, you tell me. Well, I know Jeremy's answer. Look at his sweater. He's the Grinch. He's gonna be like, no, no, no, no, no, no. So yeah, that's what it is. Well, just tell them everything that I taught you about it. This episode will be everything that I taught you. That's literally the unlock. It's like I taught him everything. Just sneaking that out there in the beginning. Let me put you on real quick. Remember all that stuff I told you last night? Okay, now tell them. Yeah, exactly what I was gonna say. All right, Johnny. I have a big question for you. Yes. What was Christmas like in prison? Horrible. A lot of people wouldn't really celebrate it. Like obviously they would make spread and like I remember they would make like little like reindeer looking like candies like they'll get a Cinnabon and put like Reese's Pieces as the eyes pretzels as like the little reindeer, you know, and they'll slang them. But it was all just a hustle. But most of the time people wouldn't celebrate those things. Because if you're like a lifer, you're gonna be like what? Oh, yeah, another my 15th, you know, Christmas behind bars like my 15th birthday, but it's like, it's horrible. So yeah, but it you would get more okay, what I liked about it was the food. Everyone would spread right and you know, it would just be super fire and you would get an extra tray on some yards, you get an extra tray. And I was Muslim at that time. So there was a there was a little hack where I was like, Oh, I can't eat this food. And you would get like halal food, it would be better. Like I was Muslim. And they would literally give us like better food. But yeah, there was just Oh my god, just nasty stuff back then, man. You were saying how they would give you'd make holidays. What's holiday spread versus regular spread. So it's just like more like, it's more themed than than anything. The the regular spread is just like you just throw it all together. So what goes in regular spread, regular spread, be like tuna, canned tuna, sometimes you could do like anchovies, dry noodle or wet noodle up to you ramen, basically chips, any kind of Cheetos pork rinds, pickle, hot pickle, obviously. Slim laid Slim Jim. Oh, yeah, they have like not beef sticks, but not not all Slim Jim's. Yeah, sometimes some yards have different ones. Then they'd have like the cheese, like the what was it? Yeah, cheese was gonna have cheese was crackers. I mean, it was good. I'm not gonna lie. So that's a regular spread. So then what
makes it a holiday spread holiday spread is just the theme. So it would be like more red and green. Like literally, it's just spread. But like, it would be like chili lime, chili lime, you know, like chili lime instead of like, you know, I mean, they would still use the same thing. Like sometimes people would donate again, depending on the yard, you'd get like KFC for the food drive, you get like, you know, and and even in the the not commissary in the chow hall, they would give you like, you know, some ham, some turkey, like here in their Thanksgiving, stuff like that. But it was not no, like spread was the way to go. Yeah, in the holidays, are people from the outside allowed to give you gifts? Like, like, no, no, no, you can't just get like a apple pie. No, no, no, no way. There's a there's a there's a holiday season is such a hustle. Because people who would do cards, for example. So like inmates would send cards to their daughters, their families. And like there was a guy who just drew up cards so well, like and would make it like he was like Hallmark. You know, like, yeah, little like poppers, all kinds of stuff. And there's so many artists like people don't know it's such an untapped thing. That's why a lot of prisoners will leave and then become tattoo artists. They're like amazing. All they do is draw in there and hone in on their skills. That is a hustle to make cards, family cards, you know, weddings, like whatever it is, they'll just shoot stamps, they'll trade honey buns for it, they'll trade commissary. And then they'll do all that. It's crazy when you saw that. And you knew how much time you had behind bars. Were you ever like, let me come up with a hustle. Yeah, but I suck that drawing. So like, I suck that drawing. I wanted a tattoo and stuff. I suck so bad. He's holding the pencil like this. Yeah, he's like a smiley Johnny. Johnny with one end. He's like j o h n y. They're like, wait, no regrets. No regrets. Yeah. What are what are what are other hustles? Like I feel like you could make some good food. I mean, they're Yeah, obviously. People would make spread, a lot of it was drawing, they would fix things, there were people who were fixers, there were jailhouse lawyers in there where they would spend all, usually it's lifers, spend all their time reading every book in the library and be like, oh yeah, you can come to my cell. And they would give them legal advice. Like how to fight the case.
Yeah, how to fight a case, how to appeal, how to do all this, I'm like, dang. So there was that, tattooing, obviously. And yeah, I mean, it's just basically like doing all that illegal stuff. All of that stuff is illegal, by the way. What do you pay with, though, because you can't pay with money? Commissary. So you, like food, basically. Food, basically, yeah. Oh, but you could pay for money, but you'd have to go outside. Like your family member would have to wire their, the other family. Put money in their books. Or they would be like, you know, oh, my aunt would, you know, meet with your mom. No way. And be like, okay. And then they'd exchange it at a Walmart or whatever. I'm serious, it happens. It happens with COs, too. Like that's how they get cell phones in. That's how they get drugs in. It's the same thing. Like, okay, my mom has X amount of money. I'll shoot you this. And you just bring it in. And they would. And they get caught up for that, too. What's like the most valuable item you can trade in prison?
You could trade in prison? Yeah, like if you're like commissary, like what, it's like a can of soda worth more than a honey bun? No, no, that's different. So I think the most, for us at least, was like stamps. You know, back then, before, now there's an era of like iPad and like tablets, right? We're on tablets, Pando and all that. But before that, they didn't have that. So it was like letters or gold, because that's how you reach people. You would also trade phone time, too. So I remember like I would like use my friend as like a Mexican dude, you know? He's like, you have a call from Jose, and it's me. I'm like, mom, hey mom, you know what I'm saying? So you can do that. How do you trade phone time? Do you have like a code or a card? No, no, no, no, it's like just when they go. Yeah. So he'll stand in line and be like, all right, Johnny, walk up. In the day room, there's times where you have the phones, yeah, and you're able to just like basically have a call. Who's tracking the time? It's all automated through the system. So like the CDCR, they limit your thing. It's like 15 minutes or whatever it is.
And yeah, you could literally like call multiple times, too. Oh, because if you got everyone else's time? Yeah, it'll cut you off. It'll be like, this call is being recorded, right? And then like, boom, you'll get cut off, and then they just call back. Who would you call every day? Homies, or I'd call like certain people, like family members, like my mom. I call like my cousin, I call my uncle here and there. And then, you know, you get like the cell phones. That was the game changer. Back then, it was flip phones, though, right? And there's just ways to like make battery chargers. Like, it's just crazy. You know, like we got to like one day, like just have like my brother or somebody, like, you know, and just start making like a spread off and just show you guys. I can show it to you better than I can like explain it to you. So when you had the phone calls, though, and you're calling people, are you just like, yo, what's going on in the outside world? Are they updating you on like sports scores? Or like what's- I mean, it's really kind of like pitiful, low key. Like we just are speaking about anything because like, it's just like time, you know? But then it depends, too.
If you're like a different race, you'd be calling shots from there. I mean, different things. But for me, it was more of like just, man, I'm bored. Let me just hit up this person, right? And you would never normally talk to like certain people, but like you'll see who really supports you outside when versus like, you know, when you're outside. When you're inside, you'll see who supports you, who kind of blocks your calls, you know? And I was like, I would see there's people who are like super annoying. That was a hustle, too. Well, they'll sit there and they'll act like, oh, I don't have soap and I don't have this. And they're just collecting money from multiple people. So like you get it from your aunt and then you get it from your girlfriend and then you get it from your homie. It's like, you use the same sob story. And then like, you kind of get it, you know? You just pull up all this money. And then what's like, if you wanted like a good meal, like let's say you want like fast food, how easy is that to do? Oh, like an actual good meal? Yeah, if you want a McDonald's dropped off in your salad. It's not easy. Yeah, you have to literally like sneak. Sneaking things in, yes, it's easy, but it's not.
Like meals is a hard thing. Smaller things obviously is easier. So back then they would have those little like flip phones. Yeah. And that was easy to slip, you know? Even though they had like blackberries and all that, it was difficult to get those in because they were like square and bigger. Yeah, so. But like, how do you find out who's the crooked CL? Just through the grapevine? You just know, yeah. You just know, man. Like, you know, just like you can, we're like master manipulators. All day we're staring at you, we're studying you. You're coming in and you're like shined up boots and you're like, all right, this dude, he's like, he's super, he's super cop. He's a super CL. You know, he's a robo-cop basically. But then there's ones who are just like, they joke with you, they chill with you, and then you could kind of like, kind of coerce them, it just happens. That's so crazy. It just happens. You'd be so coerceable. I was just about to say, this guy would be just. Jeremy, you would be a robo-cop.
You'd be like, hey, sit down. What was that? Pin drops. That's kind of messed up, if you guys would call me that. I'm a cool guy. You would narc on us. Hey, you know what's hilarious? Yeah, you know what's hilarious to think? Like, some crooked CO, the next day you see him in the cell next to you, they catch him, and you're like, oh, you're like, yo, where's my McDonald's? And it's like, no, I'm here now, because I tried. Because I tried. Yeah, wait, when they get caught, they get a full-on prison sentence? No, not, it depends. Like, I mean, people get caught for like, you know, smuggling things, obviously, can get, you know, prosecuted. But a lot of times, they just lose their job. And they get blacklisted, I think. I don't know. I don't, never talked to COs after. I can't imagine they'd throw a CO into the prison that he was a CO of. That's like a death trap. Yeah, yeah, but yeah, they would do that. And then, like, there was girl COs who would have relationships with the inmates.
What? Yeah, and then they would get fired, and then they would still, like, stay together. And some of them would get arrested, too. Damn. So it just depends, right? It depends on, it's all like, relative and subjective. The crazy part is what I've seen in, like, documentaries or TV shows is the drug trade inside of prison. Yeah, it's huge, bro. And the market is way, like, 5X. Like, 5X the price. Oh, the cost. Yeah, to get what you, yeah. Because it's limited, it's super supply and demand. But even then, it's like, you have to have your, somebody from the outside meet whoever to get the thing inside. Yeah, basically. I mean, it's all different, but. It's all different. Like, when my friend was telling me. 700 honey buns? The guy's, like, walking around, like, to the other cell. That was just full. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Two guys in a trench coat. They're like, get them.
Yeah, what are you doing with all those honey buns? But, um. What did you trade for? My friend who was in there, and you can tell me if it's right or wrong, he was saying, like, people who would just have, like, medical conditions and would get, you know, even something like Tylenol. It's like, that's a hot commodity. Yeah, and all of a sudden, yeah. What do you do with Tylenol? They'll take anything to feel anything. Yeah. It's like, imagine being sober for years and years, and someone offers you a Tylenol. It's like, all right. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Headache gone. You'd kill for one of those. How many honey buns would you trade for that right now? He has a headache. That was the joke. I do have a headache. Yeah. Yeah. It's crazy. All right, well, I feel like we've talked, well. Yeah, more than enough. Come on, guys. Yeah, what's the best trade so far for Christmas?
Christmas prison special. Does that make you sad when we have to make you reminisce about prison? No, it actually doesn't. It keeps me humble. I'm gonna bring it up more then. That's fine. I'm gonna bring it up more often. What you guys don't know is, Jeremy, every day reminds me of my past. That's not true. Yeah, you do. Every day, I say nice things. Is that what you did to that guy? Someone's like laid out on the street. Is that what you did to people? He makes you practice patience every day. 100%-toe. Yeah, you hear that? Do you hear the last part? Say the last part. You should thank him. Thank you, Jeremy. You're welcome. I work so hard. I do the hard work here. Wait, but so everything we just talked about is just more active during Christmas? Oh, that's okay. It's okay.
Like more phones are being sneaked in, more drugs, more spread going around. No, not necessarily. I think people are more lenient, though, on Christmas. A lot of COs are more lenient because they're understaffed, right? And they're getting time and a half. So it's basically, or maybe even double time. So yeah, they're a lot more lenient. We've had COs just be on the tier, like you guys, just chill, man. Just don't make my life harder. Like they'll literally say that and they just sit there and you're like, dang, all right, whatever. Do the, it's like a sub. There's the, yeah, substitute. Yeah, literally, they're like sub energy. Gospel Out is officially live. So again, some yard, not every, like people can't, it's not every single yard is the same. Everyone runs a program, a warden, just like we've been to other prisons, like the wardens are just different. So I can't say like, yeah, and that one. No, that doesn't sound right. That's not well in your yard. Sure. But there's other yards. Like in Lancaster, there was a dog program. I think they still have it where it's like prison and pet pals. Like they would literally have dogs and they would train them. And so it's really cool. And when we went to Angola, they don't have that. When we went to Angola, they had dogs, they had dogs too in Angola. So how do you get, how do you get picked to have a, I think you have to be like trustee level, which is like those people who drive around golf carts, like very respectful, like, like you have to kind of qualify. If you do, do they let you have a dog? If you're going to get out? Because what if you want to get out? I think so. I think so. You can't take that. You can't ever take anything with you. But but you can definitely like if you're about to,
if you're short to the house, as they say, a hundred percent, because your points are probably lower. So you're just not like you're not as high of a risk. So in California prison, you have point system. So everyone who first gets caught, their points are super high. But after a while, your points drop. So they'll go from level four to level three to even level two. Right. So I paroled out of a level two. So how many points did you leave with? I got to look back at that. But I mean, you basically they just drop like it's a lot. And then you kind of had the high score. You don't want to have a high score points. You don't want to have high points. Dude, that's the saddest thing ever. If you train a dog, you build this relationship with it. You're good. You get out of prison and they don't let you take the dog. Yeah, of course not. Jeremy, that's crazy. The dog has all the secrets. You can't take anything like you can't take anything. No, you take stuff with you like you can take your old pictures, you can take even your CDC card, like you could take everything, your patterns that you drew for tats, I mean, everything. But you'd have to ship it like priority to like somebody out there. Yeah, so interesting. But you can't take like a pet like that's government property technically, right? Not even that it's it's come if it's like from people who volunteer, they're bringing their dogs so you can train them. It's not like they're bringing it for you, like specifically for you. So technically, though, that person on the outside could be like, here's your dog. I mean, if they want to. Yeah, I'm sure they do. But the dogs are just chill. They're like stray dogs or like have been abandoned to like some some of them I heard even they let them stay in like certain areas like on on in prison. It's like crazy. I heard there's cats. I've never seen it. But I've heard I've heard there's like stuff like that. That's such a good like, that's like a match made in heaven. If it's like stray dogs that need homes and prisoners that want to train them and look after them. It's like that should be a bigger thing. Yeah, they make a lot of problem. They make great trainers like I've seen them where they're like bonded on even on the yard. I'm like, dang, these guys are like, legit, like, super good trainers. Yeah, like sit roll over, make them stay walk off, come back, make other people walk past them and they don't react like I might do you guys are amazing trainers. When they get out, they'll literally just start their own training dog training business. I was even thinking about I was like, man, if I could get down to those points and like get there, I would totally do that. You know, so I've seen lifers have it though. But again, lifers are there for a long time, and their points drop very low at times and then they're able to get those programs.
I feel like it's therapeutic to to have an animal in there. 100% Yeah, it's like that thing's like gonna help you do your time better. There's just no way makes your time easier. Well, what's the nicest thing you did for somebody this Christmas? The nicest thing I did for somebody this Christmas? Yeah, that you should be doing for somebody this Christmas. What's the nicest thing you're planning to do this Christmas for somebody? You just want to know what I got you for Christmas. Nothing. All right. That wasn't my question. All right, Johnny, tell us the real meaning about Christmas. First of all, are Christians allowed to celebrate Christmas? Yes, they are. Like the gift, the presents and all that. Yeah, they can. A lot of people they struggle with, you know, Christmas being paganistic. And yes, it does have actually pagan roots. And you shouldn't celebrate Christmas if it's only for the gift giving if it's like not if you're removing Jesus Christ out of it, then no, absolutely not. Right. But that's with everything. You could say that for like Thanksgiving, you could say that for everything. Easter. You're not supposed to, you know, celebrate. without Jesus. I think what I have an issue with is not people celebrating Christmas, but the legalism behind that's being dumped on people who do celebrate it. So we all fall short and I feel like, you know, who are we to like judge other people who are in their walk? Let's say they're uneducated, right? We're supposed to do everything for the glory of God and you're supposed to educate people too. Like, hey, just so you know, it is paganism. You can let people know that, right? But again, you have to have relationship with them. Like people online are like bashing other people. Like, oh, you put up a Christmas tree. Jeremiah 10 says, if you cut the wood, then the wood is idolatry. Yeah, but they don't even understand the context of that, right? The context is you're taking that wood and you're carving wooden engraved images of idols of other gods. That was the context of Jeremiah. They had a lot of false prophets back then, fake dreams and all this type of stuff, right? So they're thinking like they take that one verse, uh, Jeremiah 10, two to four, and they're like, this is what it means. Don't, if that's the case. Okay. If you cut down a tree and you produce something out of it, then all your wooden furniture at home, you can't have it. That's idol worship. Like everything that you use, that's used from a tree, your
pencils to everything. Like you can't do it, right? They won't say that. Right. So it's, it's, it's always this selective conditional, like I was taught something and now I'm perpetuating it, even if it makes sense or not. And I'm not going to fact check it. I'm going to judge you. Right. So Christmas does stem from the Bible in a way that, um, it's talking about the gift that keeps on giving in Luke. It speaks about it. Jesus Christ is the gift. He was the one that hung on the cross, the tree, and he redeemed it. God is a redeeming God, meaning he'll redeem everything. Like we were sinners, for example, evil, worse than pagans. Right. But then he redeemed us to make us righteous. So if you use in the same way, Christmas to redeem it, to be like, no, it's not pagan. It's again, just about, you know, Santa Claus. It's about Jesus Christ. It's about celebrating him, um, you know, and, and plugging him into it and making him the center of attention. I don't see what the issue is, is wrong with that. You know? So yeah, a lot of people say that if it's, if it, if Christmas magnifies Christ, it's worship. If it doesn't magnify Christ, if it replaces Christ, then it's idolatry. My, uh, my, my Korean parents never played the Santa Claus game with me as a kid. So like, I grew up in these white areas and never be like, Santa's going to give me this, whatever. And I'm like, who's Santa? Yeah. Like the presents, they would just write mom and, you know, mom or dad, you know what I'm saying? You got presents. I never even got presents. Dang. That's why Korea number one. Yeah. Number one, China. Wait, so Santa like didn't go to y'all's houses? No, we never left out the milk and cookies. Never did any of those. My parents were never down to do any of those kind of like traditional, like the American holiday type things to make it feel a certain way. They're like, they're, they were very Christian. They're like, Christmas is about Jesus. Those presents are from us. Yeah. I was like, all right. My Santa was a crackhead. He's just knocked on my door to get any crack. The only guy sliding through your chimney at night was a crackhead. Santa's, you got some crack. Get out of my house. Wait. So you said your parents put the gifts? Yeah. What are you saying about? Oh, oh, I thought they worked with Santa. Okay. Yeah. You're good. You're good.
You're good. You made me nervous for a second. Yeah. Okay. It's crazy. Yeah. Don't you celebrate Hanukkah? No, but my dad would, when we were growing up, would do like all the Christmas stuff, the little like footprints from the chimney to where the cookies were left out, half eaten, milk gone. Must be nice. Yeah. Wow. Must be nice. The classic, like American dream Christmas growing up. Your dad was just running a PSYOP, a capitalistic PSYOP on you. I was trying to stay up every year to catch the guy. My brother and I could never do it. Like 10 PM came and I was just too tired. Wake up the next morning every year with gifts. Okay. So what age did you stop believing in it? Like when did you wake up? What do you mean? Oh yeah. I think I stopped believing when I was like six years old or five years old. My parents never even give me a chance to believe, but me and my brother, I told the story before, but me and my brother on Christmas, I was, I was five actually. And he was like, we were waiting, did the same thing. We're like sitting there and like put out little cookies back then. It was like the chewy red chips. Yes. I know the seasonal ones. And then it had the, and then we had the milk, right? We put it out there and I think our milk, we're so Asian. We, we never had actual milk cause Asians are lactose. We had soy milk. So we put out soy milk and like chewy. Right. And, um, I remember like we were sitting there and I was like trying to stay up and whatever and I wrote a little letter to Santa and my brother wrote a letter to Santa too. We get up and there's nothing like none of it is, you know, none of the food is eaten or whatever. And I'm pissed, right? Because when I get hurt, like I get, I get angry, right? I don't like cry. I'm like, I get frustrated. So I started raging and I remember my brother like also was devastated. My brother was such a good kid back then. He was like, I love Santa. He was like friends with everyone, you know, I was always like the mean mugging, like scheming
bad kid. Yeah. Like the Grinch. Yeah. It was the straight up the Grinch. Right. Why am I the Grinch? And so he, he sees me like getting pissed off and I'm like, I knew he was fake and why does he come to our house? And I was like tripping on my, my brother was just catching strays. I was like, you're stupid too because you believed in him. I was just giving it to him. Santa's listening through the chimney is like, this is why I don't come to the hood. Yeah. Like it's on his way there. I was like, Santa doesn't come to the hood basically. And so my brother just walks in the room, devastated obviously, and I'm thinking he's just going in there and I'm just like pissed, like swinging at the air, like fighting the air. And then my brother comes back and he obviously like tapes a Chinese newspaper, right? There's a Chinese newspaper that my dad would always read every morning. He like cuts it out, tapes it up, like writes like to Johnny from Santa. It was like S N T A, right? He didn't even spell it right. He's like, here, Johnny, there's something, and it's our old super Nintendo Spider-Man game. Right. And so I was like, what? And then he just was like, yeah, Johnny, I don't know. I guess Santa didn't give me, but he got you something.
Well, he was like seven years old, six, seven years old. And he was like learning, you know, and, and, and how to have compassion. So that story was always like a, a very pivotal thing to be like, dang, that's how my brother really was. He was always just a nice kid, sweet kid. Yeah. I wasn't like that though. That's a good memory to have of Christmas. It's almost worth it. Yeah. Yeah. That's really sweet. But we never celebrated it. My brother too. Never, ever celebrated Christmas. Dang. Do you get Christmas presents now though? Like even. Even. Wrong. Got you one last year. True. Jeremy, you did. Doesn't even remember. That was a test and you failed. That, I know what it was. It was the, the, the luggage. I hope you remember what he's like. He's like, yeah, you got me one. I don't remember what it was.
He got me a luggage. Cause he's like work harder. That's literally what it was. He's like, you're going to travel more. So here's a luggage. Eh, eh, eh. And I'm like, I don't want to travel. I don't want to do anything. So what? So what? So what? Wow. Look at this guy. Get him a nice gift. Did I give you a nice gift? I think you got me. What did you get me last Christmas? I gave you something for the whole year. Yeah. Job. Christmas. No, no. But you know why? Because this suitcase was hilarious. It's like tiny. Yeah. And he would like, we'd be taking these long trips and in his suitcase, he would have like two pairs of shoes. I'm like, why are you bringing two pairs of shoes? Clothes is more important.
One, one pair of pants, no underwear, one sock. And he's be like, I think this will work. I'll just move the sock to either foot throughout the trip. And if I flip it inside out, if I move it from left to right, that's one day. That's two days. Then flip it inside out. Then right to left. That's another day. He's only half lying. Cause we would pull up and he'd be like, can we stop at Target real quick? Like just need shirts. You would need shirts. You don't remember this? I don't remember that. You had to pull over for just like black t-shirts one time. Like, did you pack shirts, Johnny? Oh, I think I forgot. Or he would always, or he'd always show up with no warm clothes. I would, I would do that. I would. I suck. I think everywhere is California. Yeah. Yeah. Literally, I'm like, that's like, oh yeah. Oh, what the heck? Why is it so cold? Same. I make that mistake. No, you don't.
This guy's the opposite of Johnny. He brings like, he brings like he's moving to a new city. He brings his pillow aid. He had such a good, he's like, bring your pillow. And I was like, pillow? What? And man, that's such a game changer, bro. Quickest way to fall asleep in any bed. It turns any bed into your bed pretty much. That's funny. Okay. So, so you're saying, you know, the focus on Christmas should be Jesus. What does that literally mean? So when I rap, so when I, so what does that literally mean? Meaning when I go into Christmas or the most, the number one thing people think about is, okay, what do I want for Christmas? Yeah. What am I going to give to somebody? And by giving somebody, I'm participating in this thing where I'm thinking of them. Yay. Oh, and it's his, Jesus died or Jesus was born. Happy birthday, Jesus. Yeah. Is that, is that it? Did I do a good job? Yeah. I mean, essentially you can, you can still take in the festivities because Jesus also went to weddings. He went to like banquets. He sat with sinners.
It's okay to sit there. Wait, so I have a sinner for giving away gifts? No, but you can sit there and like give gifts, but like also it's to honor God. It's like, man, thank God. So let's say you're giving gifts, right? If we were to hold a Christmas, I would, I would keep it gospel themed. I'd be like, man, I'm so thankful that we're able to have life and God gave us life to then be able to give the same. gifts to people because if we didn't wake up, why are you smiling? Just like, just keep going. Why? I don't know. Why do you do this? When you start saying certain things, it makes me think of funny things. When you said it, Oh, it's good. Make it gospel themed. It's like, you know, when you're like a kid and you want like games and then your parents give you socks. I'm imagine Johnny's like, I gave you Bible verses. Thank you, Johnny. Try to like, appreciate it. Like you better be thankful. That's a banger thing. But yeah, no, but basically like if I was to set it up right before I was rudely and abruptly interrupted by the Grinch. Okay. The Korean Grinch, by the way, but, um, I would literally be like, yo, let's be thankful. Like let's give things, let's do a sheet of gratitude or something and be like, what are we grateful for?
Right. And obviously what did Jesus give us that we could not earn ourselves life? For example, waking up to even wake up. Like there are people who didn't wake up today. There's people that are not going to wake up tomorrow and they're, they're going to be people who die on Christmas, sadly, right? So for us to get up, like thankful to God for that. So keeping everything gospel centered in that way, that's, that's how you glorify God. That's how you glorify Christianity. Would you recommend that people use that time to go do like community service or do some kind of action? If it's, if it's gospel centered, because you can be a humanitarian, you can go and be and do stuff. But if you're not pointing it back to Jesus, then what's the point of it? Like, why is it called Christmas? They did, they, this Christ is in the, in the root word of it. So that's why even people go, well, it's Xmas, right? They'll X out Christ. Right. Do you guys remember that? Yeah. Back then I was like, why would they, I was a kid and I was like in middle school and I'm like, why are they saying Xmas? And they're like, oh, we're trying to be like, you know, neutral and not offend people. Like, but I'm like, but I always known it as Christmas, even though I didn't believe in Jesus Christ. Like I knew that this was, I thought it was Christ's holiday, Christ's birthday, you know, Jesus birthday, which is not, but what the heck?
Why did they make it Xmas? Do you remember that? Yeah. But I've never known why I thought it was just a shorter way to spell it. I thought it was a shorter way to spell it, but it's right. It's like such a clear covering of Christ. They were covering it up. Yeah. Just removing of it. It's like the one Christmas is low key. The one like Christian thing that no matter what level of media school politics, they can't really get rid of Christmas because it's Christmas. Like in schools, you still have Christmas on the media, on the news, TV shows, you still have Christmas, even though they want anything to do with God, but that was like a clear, uh, like X-ing out of Christ on Christmas. X-mas? What the heck? I never thought of that. 10-mas? I was like trying to like figure it out. Like X-mas 10-mas? I'm like 10-mas? X-mas? Huh. But yeah, it was, it was clear and I'm like, huh. So again, once people start doing that, then I think it's obviously not only disrespectful, but it's just wrong. Right. So, yeah. So, so for me, it was like, as long as you're honoring God through Christ,
yeah, sit there and have, you know, your gifts and share, right. Like the gifts, you know, the gift of the Magi and all that. That's all biblical too, but it can't be the center. Right. It can't be like, oh, I'm going to shape my, I look all year forward to this one day, like every day you should treat it like Christmas because literally God gives you a gift every single day. And that's the gift of life. I'm not going to lie. Like, because of where Christmas is, it's obviously it's one of like the strongest capitalistic holidays. That is pretty much what people look forward to. If you're in a relationship or whatever, I've seen people get in fights over the gifts they got or didn't get, or even the gifts they got. It's like, I've seen literal fights. Fights. I've seen fights between friends over like white elephant. I've seen fights over significant others. And so like, yeah. Why do you think that, like, how do you have that conversation with your significant other if they're unhappy with the gift you gave them? You can't. I mean, should you break up with them? No, definitely not. But it should be like, Hey, this is, it's, it should be, it should always come back to the heart, right? It's like, Hey, like, this is why, if you guys want to ease your life, if you just keep it gospel centered, like, what are they going to do? If you keep the theme, there's a common ground, right? You keep the theme of like, I'm going to focus on Jesus.
And then your significant other focuses on Jesus. Then what is there to fight about? Well, but because it's not like that, then these little loopholes, these little like leakages come out, right. Where it's just like, everything gets convoluted and it's like, Oh, you don't love me because you didn't get me this. I've been hinting all freaking year and you didn't get it for me. Cause you're stupid. It's like, yeah, but for 364 out of the 365 days I've been providing, I've been here for you, but that doesn't matter. You genuinely don't care about me. That's kind of an extreme example, but I've seen that happen. I mentor people and they're like, I don't know what it is. Like I've had this guy's. I've done all this and he doesn't like wanted to give me presents like he's just a sorry poor gift giver and I'm like, yeah But is that really what's breakup worthy like because he doesn't give you gifts. Well, I don't feel like appreciated So what they're doing is they're tying their identity to materials and right and if you do that, that's a big problem like I mean you that that's gonna ruin any kind of marriage any kind of like because it just takes that one messed-up gift or That one thing where they're tying their identity to and you didn't give it to them and validate them then it's over basically Yeah, I'm not gonna lie. I'm a terrible gift giver dude. I am Terrible gift giver like I think so well for other people when it comes like reading heart posture thing But when it comes to gifts, I'm like, I don't know what you want. You want socks? Like I literally suck at it and I forget my own birthday Sorry, James like my brother to like he doesn't get mad But he's given up on me like I he always my brother always remembers my birthday and I never remember his birthday No, never dude. It's July 1st, and I'm always like fire. He's like Johnny. It's a time of month and I'm like, oh fireworks And he's just like, oh, that's cool. And I'm like dang bro. I'm sorry, bro Like I hate every always my brother remembers birthdays and I just so he remembers my dad's birthday I don't even know my dad's birthday remembers my mom's birthday. I'm like, is it the 7th? Is it the 6th? I'm not I'm not gonna lie. It feels pretty good when you get a fire gift from somebody it does and
Also for the birthday things. Well, it's just missing. Yeah, I haven't really Gotten anything fire though. Hmm Okay, okay, maybe not fire Thoughtful perhaps. I love getting a really thoughtful gift I don't know maybe the ease of traveling that you haven't noticed 364 days in the last year Hey, but I genuinely look but people give me a really good gift. I'm like dang like that was a really good gift Okay, give me an example I'm trying to think of like something that somebody's you can't remember because I saw a tick-tock once and it was like, um Take take your kids on vacations spend your money on vacations not gifts because it was like what do we get you guys last Christmas? And they're like, I don't know nothing and like what was your favorite trip this year? And one goes, California and the other said Colorado and they both remember both of those trips and they loved him We see Jeremy. No, you know what all I want every Christmas I had one gift I wanted and it was always a computer game and Generally, I would play that computer game for like three. I knew exactly just what I wanted and what we keep me entertained forever Yeah, it's always a computer game and I played for hours and hours. I didn't care if you gave me any of the gift I just wanted the specific computer game. What's so funny? Well, like you didn't play counter-strike in Starcraft I did I didn't play Starcraft I played counter-strike, yeah Okay, number one is a shoot a peeper. I was like Strategy, you know requires no brains like me. Okay, you're you're IQ Yeah, you need a certain level of IQ to play it You have to take an IQ test before they allow you to open an account. So I understand why you didn't get it. Enjoy Starcraft Oh, I was like, what is this build? Yeah work. How come he sounds like me? Warcraft oh, sorry. Starcraft is alien. Well, it's the same thing. Greed is good The entire Korean population shuts off this podcast. That's their national sport. We're so nerdy Starcraft was the national sport It was literally if you go to Korea, there was a I don't know if it exists there But when I was like, you know, he's called a PC bung. No, you turn on the TV instead of ESPN. It's Starcraft I swear to God all the time people play against each other. I was like, this is fire Did gift-giving during Christmas come from the Bible Yes, and no, right. So obviously there was the the three gifts presented by the wise men And you know, there was a frankincense and myrrh and all that so
They kind of took it from there I would say but it has obviously changed into something completely capitalistic and all that But for the most part it was it did stem from from you know, giving gifts But again, it all pointed to the eternal gift when you look at Romans 6 23 It's very clear for the wages of sin is death. But the gift of God is everlasting life So God gave us a gift gift is something you receive you don't work for so all gifts are supposed to perpetuate that It's supposed to be like hey, this is a reminder like that Jesus did this for us just like fasting fasting is like Jesus fasted We're taking that little bit with him because we're not doing 40-day fast, you know We're doing like one six eight fast and like, you know, we'll fast for like a couple days, right? But like it's to almost share in the struggle and to, it's for devotion to him. It's for worshiping him. It's to remember what he did for us. So again, it's not something that's like legalistic, but people shun people for Christmas. Specifically Christians shun other people for celebrating Christmas, right? But how my take on it and biblically speaking too, is you're not holier because you don't celebrate Christmas and you're not unholy because you do, right? Like that's what it, but people are like, nah, bro. Like if you do it, you're like crooked. Okay, then all the other sins, you better keep that same energy too, right? It's like that one day that you're tripping. It's like, no, in your heart, if it's to magnify Christ, why wouldn't you do it? In 1 Corinthians 13, 10, it speaks about this. Everything you do, magnify Christ.
Colossians 2, 16 and 17, do not let anyone judge you in meat and drink in any of the holy days or holidays. You're not judged by the days, you're judged by the posture of your heart, what you're doing with that day, right? Because if you're sitting there and you're only focused on gifts, it doesn't have to be Christmas. It could be a regular day and if you're materialistic and you're greedy, that's worse than you celebrating a day where you're honoring Christ. You get what I'm saying? So we're hiring guys, core of the heart is hiring, but listen carefully. We're not just building a company, we're building one of the fastest growing Christian communities in the world. In just a year and a half, this community has grown to over 3 million strong and we're nowhere near done. Our mission is simple but massive, to build the best tools and resources to help anyone in the world get closer to God. Our first immediate goal is to get 100 million people into heaven. So when we say we're hiring, understand this, we're not looking for employees, we're looking for mission driven A players
that wanna change the world. Our criteria is simple, don't show us what you could do, show us what you've already mastered. Like if you wanna be the short form editor, show me the millions of views you've gotten on short form. If you wanna be the podcast producer, show me the shows that you've successfully produced. We've learned the hard way not to hire off potential, we just wanna hire off of peer experience. People who have already proven that they can perform at their skillset at the highest level. We have jobs available in many different departments, media and content, live events and marketing. We also have remote jobs and LA based jobs available. If you're an A player that has mastered their craft and wants to do something that glorifies God, then please head to the link in our description and check out the job board. And lastly, if you're an absolute beast at something and you don't see it on the job board, I mean, you might be able to do it for us, it might work out. So if you're amazing at something, you don't see the perfect job description, just reach out, tell us what you're good at, maybe it'll work. Genuinely, I can't do this without a team. So I'm very thankful for anyone who supports the mission. I look forward to hearing from you guys.
I saw this clip go viral from the last podcast where Brandon asked you, hey, do you swear? And you're like, you're honest. You're like, yeah. And then you kind of explained the legalism thing. But I don't think people still understand it. I don't think they fully understand if you break one law, you break them all, so you might as well keep them all. They're still like, no, you gotta be a certain way. Like, you gotta be good. You gotta represent Christ. Why is that concept so hard for people to understand? Because legalism is performative. And at the end of the day, they have an underlying heart that it looks good, it feels good to me to sit there and off my own willpower, quit lust and quit drinking, quit cursing. You're now at the center of it and you're receiving glory. As much as they say, oh, it's all because of Jesus, they're like white knuckling it, right? Like, oh, I'm not gonna curse anymore. I'm not gonna drink anymore. Oh, look at me, I overcame, I overcame. Whereas it's like Jesus has to overcome, right? They also don't understand that there's two types of laws. There's a law of sin and death. There's a law of spirit and life. A lot of people are still under the law of sin and death. Mosaic law is 10 commandments.
They think that they can love their neighbor as themselves. They genuinely think that and they don't know that the heart is deceitful, right? Like, I did a test even in my Discord. I was like, hey guys, do you guys believe in Jeremiah 17, verse nine and everything the Bible says about it? And they're like, yeah, that's the famous scripture that says the heart is deceitful, meaning a liar, above all things, meaning top liar, desperately wicked, meaning beyond cure, who can know it means nobody knows this. Nobody knows that their heart is desperately wicked and nobody thinks like that. No one walks around and goes, I'm evil, but then I tested them. I tested the spirit. I was like, so do you guys believe in that? Jeremy, do you believe that every single, your heart is evil according to the Bible? Yeah, you believe in the Bible, right? Okay, so when you say that you believe, right? I would argue that you just know, I don't think you believe and I'll explain why, here's the test. If you believe that every single part of your heart is evil, let's say, would you say that then your heart is worse than like a pathological liar? Because if it's deceitful above all things, it means it's the top liar.
Yes. Yes, so you wouldn't trust a pathological liar. He's saying, do you believe it or are you accepting that truth? Oh, I accept that truth. Do you actually believe it? Do you believe it? That my heart is more deceitful than a pathological liar. Yeah, compulsive liar of all time. Nothing out their mouth. Yes. Yes. Okay. So you wouldn't trust a pathological, compulsive liar. Okay. Then why do you trust your feelings? When you get mad, why do you trust that? That comes out of your heart. I don't trust that. Yeah, you do. And that's the thing. No, I don't. And that's... So you don't get mad at all? Never. I say, this is a feeling and it'll pass. All my thoughts are evil. And that's what I put you on to. That's what I taught you. Come on, man. You got to remember what I taught you.
No, but I did that test and people were like, mind blown. Like, oh my gosh. Right. So why do you, when you feel fear, why do you trust the fear? And they're like, what? I don't know what fear is, but I understand the point of this. It's interesting. So you're basically like, we trust our feelings every day. It lies to us all the time. But then we're saying we wouldn't trust a Jeffrey Dahmer, a serial killer, a murderer, whatever, but our heart is worse than that. And then they'll even fight. But God gave us a new heart. Okay, so what does it mean in Ezekiel 36, 26, that God gave us a new heart? And then they'll be like, well, it's to love Jesus. And no, the new heart is to distrust your old heart. Because back then, before we preached the gospel, who would teach this? Distrust your heart? Are you kidding me? Everyone would follow their feelings. But when you meet Jesus and God, you're told to what? Deny yourself. That is the new heart. Oh, I can't trust my heart. It's evil. I mess up, right? Before we'd be like, no, we don't mess up. Like we're not evil. Now it's like, dang, I do. I can't trust it.
I don't know myself. That's the new heart that God plants inside of us. Removes the stony heart of self-righteousness and plants the heart of humility to go, man, I might be wrong, right? I might be wrong. So in the same way, why I'm saying this, how this all ties back in is people think like, well, I can keep the law, but they don't know that that's a deception. If you break one, you break them all. In their hearts, they know that. But in their mind, they're like, nah, I'll just try my, I'll try better. This whole Christian community has become try harder, do better. And then God will acknowledge that. That's not what the Bible says, though. Nowhere in the Bible can you show me scripture that says, God says, try harder, do better, and I'll forgive you. He says, do it. If you love me, John 14, 15, keep my commandments. Don't try to keep the commandments. If you love your neighbor, it says, love your neighbor as yourself. Doesn't say try to do it, right? So if I'm trying to do something, it means I'm not doing it. If I sit here and go, I'm trying to be a doctor. You're not a doctor. I'm trying to get to Korea right now. I'm in LA. You're not in Korea. I'm trying to keep the commandments. You're not keeping them, right? So people don't understand that. They have their own mindset, which is deception of if I just try harder and do better, that's
what you're supposed to do. Like you can't just send however you want, not knowing that they send however they want. Right? So that's a, that's a big one too. Like I get this thing where people go, so Johnny, are you saying you could just send however you want, right? And I'm like, first and foremost, you do send however you want. Cause think about it. A person is sitting there and they're saying, you can't send however you want. What I hear when they're saying this, correct me if I'm wrong, is I can control my sins because I'm not sitting however I want the, the, the lust that comes. I can deny it. The flesh, whatever, whatever. So what they're saying is that they're sinless basically. And that's BS. If you say you have no sin, the Bible says you're, you make God a liar and the truth is not in you. So if you don't sin, then why do you repent? You repent because you sin, right? So a person who sits there and goes, I don't send however I want. They, it means that they think, even though it's not true, that they can control their sin. Now, when they're controlling their sin, they're not knowing that if you break one, you break them all. Right? So if they do sin, I always catch them up. I trip them up with this. I go, well, you can control your sins. Yes, I can with the Holy Spirit. I can do it.
Okay. So when you sinned, right, you can't blame because free will, you can't blame Satan. You chose to do it. Yeah, I did. Okay. So you sin willfully and you know, in the Bible, it says, if you sin willfully, there's no sacrifice. And they literally dead fish me. Oh, well, well, and they start moving the goalposts. No, it's not that it's, it's, I came into agreement, but then I repented and they start doing this. But it's like, you're telling everybody to stop sinning. When you yourself haven't even, you don't even understand what sin is and you haven't stopped sinning. Right? So in the same way, this is why people struggle so much with legalism because legalism is very shallow. It's rules replace Jesus. That's it. Religion replaces relationship. So you'll sit there and you'll be like, oh, I'm doing good because I followed these rules. I'm not good because of the blood. I followed these rules. That's why I'm good. Now that's conditional. So your salvation then is not bait is not dependent on the blood of Jesus Christ and you not being able to do anything. It's now dependent on your obedience. So Jesus isn't your savior, then your obedience is. That's why they.
they say you could lose your salvation because they think that they can fumble it. Why does it feel hard to follow Jesus sometimes, right? Like, so for example, like they wanna give up swearing. They wanna be, for whatever reasons, they just wanna kind of be a better, what they define as a better person, right? Whether it's quit smoking, stop swearing, stop cheating, let's pick something more intense. Stop looking at porn, stop cheating. And it's just tiresome, but they understand what you're saying. They're like, look, I can't do it. Jesus, you do it. Today's really hard. Jesus, you do it. Man, it's still hard. Next day, Jesus, you do it. Still hard. Week later, month later, Jesus, you do it. It's still hard, but I believe in it, but I just keep caving to this. What do you say to that person? Because people like that still think that they're trying to save themselves. They're still thinking that they're good. The whole point of the commandments is to reveal sin. It's not to heal sin. And so Jesus tells us, if you love me, keep my commandments for one specific reason.
He's trying to show that there was only one person that could do it, and that was him. There's only one person that loves God. That's why in 1 John 4, it speaks about not that you love God, but God loved you, and since his only begotten son for you, right? So in the same way, the same John that wrote John 3.16, the famous verse that everyone knows, God is showing us that, hey, if you wanna meet me through your obedience and your commandments, and your ability to keep the commandments, you're never gonna meet me. So that's why people struggle, right? When I learned that early on, oh, it's not that I have to stop cursing. I have to realize that I will never stop on my own accord, on my own willpower, and that's why I need to lean on God more than actually trying, right? It's not just sitting there. Even waiting, I can't even wait on God. Being obedient, I can't even do that. Then it's something weird happens, right? I remember sitting there, I remember, it was at the Koreatown Church. I was like, dang, I really feel like I'm nothing, and I felt this burden. It was like not condemnation, but it was like conviction, I think, for the first time. I was like, dang, I really am broken to the core
where I can't do anything, but then a new heart arised out of me. It was like, even though I'm like this and I hate myself so much, why the hell would God, Jesus himself, die for someone like me? Then compassion, empathy started to flow, and love started to flow out of that heart. Like, dang, God, even though I struggled this much, and you know, you're literally there watching me. You don't throw me away, you don't kill me, you don't chastise me, you don't hurt me. It's like, you don't even accuse me of anything. You just let me be. You accept me. Then I was able to then accept myself, and then I was like, dang, even when I don't accept myself, God, Jesus, has accepted me. Then it was like, the heart just wanted to, like, with that love, I overcame the addictions. I overcame the heart of being like, I don't need this anymore. I don't need to do this. I'm a person who's completely loved by God. I was searching for love for my family. I never got that. This is what love actually is. I just didn't know what it was, and so I had to surrender in that way to be like, man, I can't do it.
So God will wait for you to literally break all the way down to come to the end of yourself, to come to the realization that, dude, I literally can't do this, and Satan will then also play with that. He'll make you feel like you can do it again. He'll make you sit there, even believing people, even today, people will be like, Satan will make people be like, oh, but I received grace that one day, so I can do it now. Oh, I got that blessing now. I learned the lesson now, and then he's like, God's like, you think so, and he'll check us again, and then it's like, oh, and then you're like, man, that's the process. It's not up and down. It's more of just like, oh, every day, the battle is trying to see yourself in God's eyes versus seeing yourself in your eyes. That's the battle every single day. It's not that you're sinning. It's not that you're horrible. It's not that you have OCD, whatever. It's that I'm this new creature, but I don't see myself like that, so every day is an opportunity to see myself as a new creature according to the word of God and throw away my thoughts. That's the battle.
That was well said. I haven't really been able to put it in words, but that's literally it because it's just, because it's also like once you understand the truth, I think a lot of people believe what you say, and then the application of that step is so hard because I'd say even for myself, I'm struggling with it now, right? Our business is scaling like crazy, and there's parts of me that I feel stressed or overworked, and I'm like, this feels like before I knew everything, but I came out of that previously, and it was good for a while, and why do I feel this way again? And it's because I'm trying to put so much, I want so badly for things to happen because I see the positive side of it, and I see the potential, but then it's. Me trying to make that happen, but then I'm like, how do we get here in the first place? Yeah, there was crazy doors and things that happened without, we worked hard, obviously. So if I'm feeling stressed and I don't feel like I can do the work. Why, why am I stressing myself self out to do that? I should probably pump the brakes, right? This is me putting this on myself and that happens like clockwork. And it's so strange. Cause then I go, okay, God, you do it. And like you said, I say, okay, God, you do it the next day. I'm going right back down that list. Okay. This person to do this.
I got to do this. I got to do this. And I'm like, ah, like I'm back. Oops. I said a bad word. Yeah. That's what happens in my head. I say a bad word. I'm like, Jeremy, you're so stupid. You're doing it again. Yeah. You know what I'm saying? And then that literally happens like 10 times a day. So that battle is the battle is not that I like, I I'm like caving to Satan thoughts or whatever it is. The battle is I, I have to constantly remind myself to accept the truth. A hundred percent. And it, and Satan is in the Bible. The way that Satan works is he's called the accuser of the brethren in, in revelation 12, it says he accuses them day and night. So all day and all night, he's just accusing. Right. So like in Jeremy's example, right? Like you're saying like, Oh, I keep going down that list. And here it goes again. Like you start to kind of condemn yourself a little bit and be like, what the heck. But if you notice, I'm not saying that to you and God's not saying that to you. It's like self saying that to you. Right. And so in this way, like, that's the battle is to sit there and go, I have to
make a distinction between trusting Satan's word and his thoughts versus like what God is saying about me. Right. He wants us to go to through those loops because like, then we can lose strength in ourselves. Right. The way that pastor Kim explains is like, when you make a violin or you make a cello and you bend wood and all that, right. You have to like squeeze out all the sap and all of like the moisture out of the wood. It has to be like a hundred percent bone dry for it to like, like echo the sounds off of it. If there's even like 1% moisture in it, meaning its own strength, its own power, then it won't sound correctly. In the same way, if for us to make beautiful harmony in our lives to live peacefully, for example, right. Cause music is peaceful in this way. Uh, especially with those instruments, God has to squeeze every ounce of self righteous, self-reliance, self power, diligence out of us. And he does that by the, by what we're doing every single day, by allowing Satan at times to just kind of like, he'll utilize it, right. Everything's a tool for him. He, he, he redeems things. So he'll let that happen to us to then be like, dang, I, I shouldn't trust myself. And although we don't think it's big strides, those little strides, it's a marathon genuinely. You win, you know, like this way. Yeah. Do you feel like you're bone dry? No, I think even me 10 years into it.
No, there's parts where you have no hope. You have no hope. I'm soaking wet. Yeah. You're just a sponge. But what's beautiful is that we're not where we were. Like, I think I'm over my problems five years ago that now I have a new set of problems, right? Like, it's like your problems guys, no matter what, because of how God works saved or not, it's not going to be the same problems five years from now. Right. Like my problem now is like fame being recognized. Like I didn't care about that back then, back then it was just like arguing with, with people, with the Bible. Now it's like, it's on a grand scale, but I'm not getting tied up by that anymore. I'm not like, man, Jeremy, I want to quit because everyone is coming at me. It's like, it's more of just like, dang, like, I don't even care about that. Whereas before that was my main thing. I would preach the gospel. I would perfect my, like sharpen my sword, perfect it. Think of all the questions that they're going to ask and like give them proof in the Bible and they'd still go, no. And I would be like, yeah, like I would flip out. Right. But now I'm just like, Hey, I mean, if you don't accept it, you don't accept it. Hey, Aaron, if you don't accept it, you don't accept it. Jeremy, why are you? Well, you had to catch a stray. All that prep and you just have to be there in the comments.
Yeah. But you know, so it's a process. If you guys are thinking that you're not going to struggle in life, I have bad news for you. You're either going to struggle for God or you're going to struggle in the world. That's just a good, you got to pick your battle and you got to pick it wisely. I think the wisest thing is like, if I don't do, let's say I quit right. The pod and I quit everything. I quit core of the heart. I quit being a minister. I'm going to struggle in the streets too. I'm going to struggle to make money. I'm going to struggle to go back to my homies. I'm going to struggle with politicking in the streets. I'm going to struggle with my criminal past. I'm going to struggle with relationships. There's going to be a struggle one way, shape, or form. So why not? struggle and like actually utilize that struggle to do good and preach the gospel, right? And, and, you know, even in Christmas to, you know, glorify God versus like glorifying yourself. We've done that already. We've tried that route. At least I have. And it didn't work out. Like it just, it was, it was worse. It made me worse. I would also add like, you know, to say, you're just going to struggle one way or another when you do struggle with God, it's more, more like struggling with yourself against God. But when you do surrender, there is, there's, I can't even put it into words what the peace is like. It's very strange. And it's funny because once you, once you experience that peace, you do kind of like life gets easy and then you kind of fade back to yourself. And then it's like, you struggle to get back to that. And then you struggle because you want that peace. And you think by doing certain things to get back there, that's, what's going to get you that peace. But it's really, you just got to surrender again. It's a very, it's very hard to like put it in words. Well, it's biblical. That's why they say
you have to die to yourself. You have to renew your mind daily. Right? So like, it's just the process guys. We have to be renewed until we die. Like we are renewed spiritually positionally. Yes. But like this flesh loves to forget. That's the problem. Like, I can't even remember certain things in prison anymore. Like prison is the most traumatic experience at any, it is literally hell on earth. And I can't remember like, wait, what, what did I like get a write up for? Like, what did I, what did that nurse tell me before? Like, I can't remember it when I remember all that was my whole, all I could remember was that I couldn't remember anything outside of the world. Now it's like, I'm, I'm struggling to remember like what happened in prison. What? Oh yeah. Dude. When Mahoney brings that up, like, I do remember that we were in that, right. We did. It's like so many things. You kind of forget to be honest, you know, what a blessing, what a blessing that you forgot all that. Yeah. I mean, yeah. Yeah. I mean, according to pastor Kim though, he's like, that's not good. He's like, you need to also remember who you are like to remember those things. So which was the followup of what I was going to say. Don't forget those things. Yeah. Yeah. He told pastor Kim that you didn't let me finish. You always cut me off. Sorry. I was going to say that next to, you know, what's funny is you're going to say that. And then people in the chat are going to be like, that's so right. He doesn't let me talk. He's always right. He's Mr. Right. He's Mr. Right. It's so funny. It's so funny. Hey, the funniest one I read is you blocked me from discord. It's like, it's like the, it's like the, the, the crazy ex like you block them on everything and they find out how to send you a scent on Venmo so they can message you one last time. Oh my gosh. Listen, guys, have I done that? Don't block you. Like that's a pretty specific example. Where'd you get that idea? I have a good story about that. Can we tell them what your Venmo is? Yeah, I don't care. Send me money. Do you know what his Venmo is? I remember he had the gangster one. Jeremy is an early adopter. It's like daddy. It's at daddy. He got shadow banned on Venmo. I got shadow banned because so many people were requesting me money. You're looking at daddy himself. I'm daddy right here. But my friend has a crazy story. You know who Bella Porch is? She's like a big influence or whatever. The reason how he got to manage her because she blew up on TikTok and everybody was trying to reach out to her to manage her or whatever. He found her real, her legal name, found her on Venmo, sent her a dollar and wrote the message there. And that's how he got in contact with her. That is crazy. Yeah. That's actually smart as heck. Super smart. He's like a crazy. He's like, he's got an errand brain. He's like
one of those guys. Was he your boss? No, no, no. My boss. Just a friend. But I was just like, he always has like weird stories, creative stories like that. I'm just like, dude, you're... That's so smart, bro. You think different, man. Yeah, 100%. But with the Discord guys, I don't ban you guys, okay? Those are the mods and people like Jeremy. I'm just kidding. Jeremy doesn't ban you. But like, it happens, okay? You guys just beg and you'll get back in. It's purgatory. Hey, they're going to see that clip. The one guy, Utep. That was the one. The Utep video's coming out funny. There was a guy, he came up and he asked Johnny a question during the Q&A. And then he was like, Johnny, can I ask you a second one? And Johnny's like, yeah, go for it. He's like, so, you know, you banned me in the Discord. I was wondering if I could get let back in. I'm really sorry. I, you know, it was, he explained, he was like, I was in a bad state of mind and I was arguing you. And Johnny was like, yeah, you could. It was a really heartfelt story. And then I came back out with the mic. I was like, that was really sweet, but you're still banned. No, I'm just kidding. We let him in. Yeah. And something too, it's like, you guys got to imagine the Discord, right? And what the mods are trying to do. There's 20,000 people that are trying to learn. And if you're in there being argumentative and you can't read a room and you can't maybe be like, okay, let me pull back a little bit and talk to the mod on the side, if I really feel a certain way, or maybe try to change my tone, if I'm coming off. because it's the internet. It's hard to read text. A lot of times you might mean well, but you can sound off. It's happened to me. Just pull back a little. For sure. Yeah, people can even be totally valid. You're just going about it the wrong way. Yeah. And like you're distracting everyone else's ability to learn. Yeah. So it's a, it's a public, it's also,
it's also at the end of the day, our discord, our rules, unfortunately. By the way, everyone joined the discord. A lot of amazing stuff in there. Main stages, daily, almost daily. A lot of good activities. Discord stages. Yeah. Join the discord, link in the bio. Look for the link tree. And if it's hard to find in the YouTube bio, look in the Instagram bio and just search for discord. Do you guys know how many wise men there were? Duh. Say the answer. Three? Three. Three? Where does it say that in the Bible? Three wise men came to the Bible and then Frankincense, myrrh, and whatever. It said they presented three gifts. It said the wise men, the wise men. Oh, so. It doesn't say three? What? Wait, so how many blind mice were there? I don't know. Three blind mice? What do you mean?
So, people, they miss a lot of things when they read the Bible, right? They add their thoughts. They'll be, that was, I mean, I'm ashamed to say it, but that was my argument point. I would turn up with that. I'd be like, how many wise men were there, pastor? If I was talking to somebody, and they'd be like, three. And I'd be like, nope, nope, see, you didn't read the Bible. Nope, nope, nope. You're interpreting with your own thoughts. It says in Revelations, if you add to the word, cursed. If you move from the word, cursed, right? And I would like trip on them. This guy was a nightmare. I was bad, I was bad, honestly. And I would just make people go, bleh, like steaming out the ears, cartoonish, like red, you know, face. But there are, it's not three wise men. There is an undisclosed number, right? We don't know how many. They bore three gifts, yes. But there's arguments where there's a group of them. There's arguments where there was an army of them, where King Herod was afraid, right? There was all these different things. But biblically speaking, there is no number of wise men. They just bore three gifts. Really?
Yeah. Mind blown. Yeah. So people, that's why when you guys read the Bible, you have to be cautious about reading and interpreting with your thoughts. Well, there's three gifts, there must be three wise men. That just blew the lid off of like every manger scene. Literally. Now it's a man, everybody needs to pack it up. Literally. Yeah, there's no undisclosed. You can Google it, it'll even show you. How many wise men were there? They'll be like, there is no number. Wait, so what were the three gifts? It was- Frankincense, myrrh, and gold. Oh, did they? It was gold? Yeah. Wow. Frankincense is a scent? Yeah, it's incense, right? It's basically representative of like, so each thing represents something and it's glorifying God. So gold represents glory. Frankincense is like, you know, prayer, right? Incense, when you have the, in Leviticus, it talks about like how it floats up to God
for a sweet smelling savor, right? As well as the, anything smoke basically is gonna be prayer essentially. And then myrrh is, it turns bitter things sweet. What is it? It's like a fruit or? It's not a fruit, it's also kind of like a root. It's something like you mix, right? Have you heard of this, myrrh? No. Why would he know? That's just a Jewish thing. Like he knew the menorah. He knew like the- Yeah, the bitters. The bitter- On the Seder plate. Yeah. What was it again? I forgot the name of it. Oh my gosh. Something, but when you said it- It starts with M. I was like, this guy's invited to the cookout. Yeah, yeah, yeah. To the shabbat shalom. It was the bitter water. You've had it before, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, my family uses horseradish.
Oh, that's hella bitter. How is that supposed to turn something into notes? But no, no, it's not that. That's not the same thing. That was- Myrrh, it basically turns things sweet. Like, so Miriam, the name Miriam is actually Mary's name, Miriam, right? And she's basically like, she's gonna bring something into this world that turns the bitterness of sin into sweet redemption. Ah. So it's symbolic, right? And so, again, that's Mir, Miriam, the first part of Miriam, which is Mir, is this same Mir, yeah. Maybe it is, but do they do it in Seder? Do you know, is it the sweet apples? The cinnamon apples? It's something like that, but it's basically bitter water. It's not coming to my head right now because I have a freaking headache, but it's, I know what it is. Like, Sleeps was asking about it, remember? She's like, what did you say in Leviticus? Oh, yeah, right, right. And I was like, ah, but it's just, yeah. And then what's gold represent? Gold glory, the glory of God.
So when you go to heaven, there is gold. And it's like the roads, the throne, you know, the. Cherubims, things like that, the staffs, the rings, all that stuff is layered in gold, and gold represents glory. Because it's solid, it's 100%. Did you ever hear the song from a very wise man? Not a wise man, but a wise man, it's called All Gold Everything. He was actually detailing the great beyond. Yeah, who's that? Trinidad James. Oh, well, mama. Saint Trinidad James. Saint Trinidad James. Saint Trinidad James. I knoweth of gold he. All gold everything. Wait, so what other misconceptions were, I guess, of the original story of Christmas? I know the story of Christmas is the birth of Jesus, and that's what we celebrate. Was Jesus actually born on the 25th? No, he was not born on the 25th. He was not born? Really? No, the Bible never gives us a date. Again, people adding those things, right? Never gives us a date. You guys can look at it, right?
There's two different stories, two different theories. I think most people accept it as kind of a reconciliation thing, right? So everything is super detailed in the Bible when it comes to genealogy, but why not Jesus Christ? Yeah, why not? If you think about it, right? Abraham lived 800 years and whatever died. Seth lived this and died and died. It's like, why is it that God would? Because he's intentional. He wants us to believe by faith. He wants us to show. He's showing revelation here, right? So in Luke chapter two, verse 10, it says unto us, a child is born this day, not this date, right? So he's very specific that it was a day that was born, but he's actually pointing to people that Jesus, his birth is not the most important thing. It's when he's birthed in your heart. Which day does he enter and is he born in your heart basically? Does that make sense? Yeah. Where people are like celebrating one day and you know, so it's that day where, you know, he's born and then it casts out all the darkness. So why did these people, early church fathers, you know, people just back then, why did they choose December? Well, what's in December?
December is cold, it's dark. So it's symbolic of Jesus was born, the light, the warmth is born into the darkness and the cold. Interesting. Do you understand what I'm saying? So they decided on a day like this. No one claims genuinely, a Bible-believing Christian who's biblical and scholarly will not say that that's his birthday. They never say that. That's just the day they celebrate. Sure. So technically we don't know, do they know the general season? I think you can kind of trace it, but even then it's like you gotta do like crazy exegesis. You gotta go to like all of the, you know, historical stuff. Find the hay from the manger. Also the point is that it doesn't matter, right? Exactly. And at that time, Romans had, you know, a cultural festival, a winter festival. So just like people did All Hallows Day to counter paganistic things, this was these days were created actually to counter paganism. Obviously though, the enemy always uses what's good for bad, right? And so the Romans were celebrating things and we're like, yo, we can't,
we gotta distinguish ourselves from the world. So we're gonna celebrate something that like flips their thing on its head essentially, right? So Romans at that time were the people who crucified Jesus under the calling of, you know, the Jewish, but they still did the work, the grunt work, right? So that's what, and if you look at Ephesians 5, 16, everything is to redeem and redirect the focus back to Christ. So when they were having their little festivals, they were like, we're gonna celebrate Christmas on, we're gonna celebrate Christ extra hard on this day to counter that, what they're doing extra hard on their days, right? It's kind of like this counterbalance, right? So yeah, for me, the problem is not knowing Jesus' birthday, it's shaming other people for not knowing or even just like celebrating it, right? So some people don't know and they're just celebrating Christmas. They shouldn't be shamed for that, right? Secondly, if they are, you know, celebrating it and then they're like, no, that's not his birthday and then people get super offended. It is Jesus Christ's birthday. Then they start shaming. This is legalism at its finest. It's always like, bro, you gotta know everything correctly. You gotta stick to the rules. If you don't stick to the rules and you're less than,
that's a big problem. So I think a lot of people struggle with, you know, that because they wanna know the day of Christmas, not to truth seek, but to trap set, right? It's like, I wanna set a trap to get you and if you don't, like, let me see, do you know, do you know Jesus' birthday? Like how I was doing it, you know, do you know how many wise men there was? I wasn't looking to see what the fruits were and what the gifts were. I was looking at like, do you know about God? And if you don't, you're disqualified, right? It's like, that's what they do. You know, I've been legalistic before, so I know. I know the energy. Takes one to know one. Wow. Oh, so Jesus wasn't a Sagittarius. Oh my God. Cut the cameras. Cut that. No, I'm just kidding. Um, we need to talk outside. What is a December horoscope? It doesn't matter. I just know I'm Scorpion. Are you? Are you your Scorpion? Yeah.
November. They say that that's the most intense sign. Really? I don't know. It's all, it's all paganistic. Repent, repent. They say that the Pisces is the smartest, most intelligent, handsome. I don't know what month that I'm a Pisces. Oh, wait, that's my birthday month. Good thing we're both Pisces. I agree with him. You're right. It must be true. Wait, um, I was just wondering if it's like the same thing for Easter too. Like, do they know the actual date or is it just, they pick a Sunday and then. Kind of the same thing. Very, very, you know, the resurrection is not on a specific date. Yes, it is. They, again, third day, right? Like, well, that's what Aaron's asking. Yeah. Well, because I'm like, we're months, even like months back. That was their January, February. Like, when did that all start? I don't even know. Well, because they certainly were like, okay, it's year one. Come on guys. Like, yeah, no, there were September, September, July, August. Remember what even was it? Like, I don't even know.
Yeah. But I was wondering also, why does like Christmas and Hanukkah and Kwanzaa and all that, like fall at the same time, like at the end of the year, I don't really know what Kwanzaa is. I think Kwanzaa is, isn't Hanukkah Jewish and Kwanzaa. I forgot what Kwanzaa is. African. Is it? Yeah. Yeah. But I don't know the origins of what Kwanzaa is and what they celebrate. Yeah. Happy Kwanzaa. It's completely random. That's what they would say. I learned that from bad Santa. Do you remember bad Santa? I don't remember the movie. Yeah. He's like, the security guards, like, happy holidays. Merry Christmas. Happy Kwanzaa. Happy Hanukkah. And I was like, huh? I thought it was just Merry Christmas, but yeah, anyway. So, um, yeah, I, I, I know like all of it is just religious based, but it's weird that they all fall on the same day. Super random. And I know that Hanukkah, are they all on the same day? No.
I mean, Hanukkah sometimes falls around Christmas going down right now. I'm not sure to be honest. I know that it's completely random that it happened to be near Christmas. And I know that the gifts like have nothing to do. Like, I think like Jewish kids are just like, I don't know. Listen, don't cancel me for this. I have no idea. But I think Jewish kids are just like jealous of Christmas. Cause I don't know why you give gifts, but the gifts have to do. There's no relevance. I guess there's no relevance on, cause at least Christmas is a birthday. Yeah. Hanukkah was just like a miracle that this gas lasted eight nights instead of one and like let them home, whatever. But it's like, where did the gifts come in? Did someone download it? Like added to it. If you, if you could add one thing to Christmas to make it like better than it already is, what would you add? Fireworks. Everyone should be sending up fireworks. Let's start it up guys. Fireworks would be good. There's so many things that go involved in Christmas. You need lights, you need a tree, you need gifts. You need to lay out milk and cookies. You meet up in the morning and you have like Roman candles. Imagine Santa up there dodging in the sky. It's like, Holy, just bombs going off, a Santa man hunt. Santa's knocked down by a firework this year.
We'll be like, here you go, pagan. Just shooting him with Roman candles. What would you add to make Christmas better than it already is? I think Christmas, by the way, is the best holiday. Yeah. I would add Korean barbecue. Okay. That's what Jews do. They get Chinese food on Christmas. Yeah, they do. Cause all the restaurants are still open. It's like a tradition. Oh, that's true. Cause they don't care. They're like, come, come, come, sit down, sit down, sit down, sit down. Yeah, Jews, all Chinese restaurants are full of Jews. Chinese are just like, how do we make money? It's the only restaurant still open. That's figgety facts, though. Shout out to my people. That's so funny. They're making the Jews happy. All right. Well, that's, that's basically that. That's the end of it. Yeah. Well, what's your guys' favorite Christmas movie? Oh, and then off the back of that Christmas song. And actually I want to know in the comments too, best Christmas movies and best Christmas songs.
Cause this one, when this comes out, Christmas is like in three days. There's literally only one answer for the Christmas movie. Elf? No. I guess. Which one, Jerome? Home Alone. Figgety facts. Which one though? The first one. OG number one, Home Alone. I liked Lost in New York. Ooh. I liked the one where he was lost in New York. I don't know what it is. There's a vibe to those movies created during those times. Yeah. Yeah. Right. Like no one can replicate cause Macaulay Culkin, no disrespect to the other kid who had like the, the bowl haircut. Nah, disrespect to him. Macaulay Culkin was the OG. For sure. But the other kid tried to do it and he's like cute. And all that, but I'm like, dude, what the heck, man? Like, you're not, you're not him though. You're not him. You know? And I'm just like, yo, this is what, but I remember like feeling sad watching
those movies, cause I was like, envious. I was like, how come I can't have, how come I wasn't born? How what? You know? But like, why would like completely absent parents? Those parents, yeah. The parents were not like, yeah. How did they forget? How do you board a plane without your kid? Yeah. Put an air tag on them. Put them on a leash. Dude, sleeves. I saw that. What's going on? She was getting demon possessed by lightning. Yeah. What happened? Her house was like flickering. Oh my gosh. Are you good? Sleeps? Yeah. She's good. Yeah. But yeah. Uh, home alone was the best. I wanted to, I would always really like, yes, it happened during Christmas. Yes. It's a Christmas movie.
Yes. It's you watch it around Christmas, but like just a bunch of pranks and okay. What about like, what about. Cartoons like Charlie Brown. The Grinch. I'm saying elf was like, elf was through and through a Christmas movie. Yeah, but it's not the Christmas. The Grinch also. I love that is through and through a great Christmas movie. Yeah. Love the Grinch. I like Charlie Brown though. Yeah. Charlie, Charlie Brown. Yeah. Never seen Charlie Brown. Kid who was in the dirt pile. Literally looks like him. No, it does. Imagine just like dirt. Swirls around. Yeah. Smoke. Charlie Brown. Charlie Brown. Charlie. Yeah. All right. What's your favorite? What's your favorite Christmas movie?
I said it Halloween. No, I'm just kidding. I literally didn't say that accidentally. Home alone. You can't take mine. I already took it. No, but his was lost in New York. No, you can't just be like, Oh, the second one, pick another one. That's fair. Yeah. What about that? What about that Arnold movie? Remember? Oh, it's not the Tuma. That one. Yeah. Yeah. No, he's like kindergarten cop. No. What about, what about, no, I thought the one about diehard. Are you thinking of dying? No, it was like that. That's a Christmas movie. That kid. Yeah. No. Remember that kid with the action figure? And then like, he's trying to like, it was our Arnold in that one. He wasn't that one. You talk about school with Steve.
Terminator. No, I'll be back. I'll be back home before Christmas or something. I'll be back home before Christmas. I think you're misremembering, dude. Look it up. Okay. They'll back you up. It sounds like a family guy episode. Okay. They always had good specials. Yeah. What's your favorite? I already said it. I can't find home alone, New York, New York, Los in New York. What is y'all's least favorite Christmas movie? Whichever one you pick elf. Come on. I'll elf with just a little bit like corny. You didn't watch it all the way through. So let us bow our heads and pray Heavenly Father. Thank you again for giving us this platform Lord to be able to shed light on what true Christmas means Lord It's the gift that keeps on giving but it's pointing to the eternal gift Which is the gift of life in the light of men Jesus Christ, but I thank you also for giving us Jesus 2,000 years ago so that we can continuously preach this precious gospel and have life and live life abundantly Lord, so many people are judging others for For worshiping paganism as they say or legalistically father God, but that's not true Lord We are not holier Christians because we don't celebrate Christmas and we're not unholy because we do rather we point everything to As ministers of Reconciliation back to you Lord. We reconcile and redeem things back to you father God you take the nasty evil things in the world and you turn them into good and that's proof of us as being dirty evil Sinners of being made righteous holy and sanctified that is a true gift father God that is your specialty So we are forever thankful Lord that you're able to shed light on what true Christmas means It's not Christ's birthday, but it's the day that Christ was born in our hearts as well And we thank you for that Lord that if you didn't send Jesus Christ, we genuinely have no festivals no days to be able to even Practice and even even partake in so we thank you Lord for everything and we leave everything in your hands Lord and in Jesus name We pray amen.
