How to Pray for Healing | The Aggressive Life with Brian Tome
How do you pray for healing—and what do you do when you don't see a breakthrough?
In this conversation with Brian Tome, Paul Maconochie explains why Jesus taught his followers to persevere in prayer: keep asking, keep seeking, and keep knocking. If you want to grow in praying for healing, hearing from God, or experiencing the supernatural, don't just pray once and give up.
Ask God. Seek out people who are further along. Then actually practice.
He also shares a simple way to approach healing prayer without focusing on your own failures or becoming overwhelmed by the condition: keep your focus on Jesus.
that you're trying to grow in, you have to do what Jesus told you to do. And Jesus, what Jesus said is when you pray, you must persevere and not give up. So that, he said that in Luke 18, one, and he gave two parables in Luke 11, verse five, he gave the parable of the friend and the bread and at midnight. And in Luke 18, one to eight, he gave the parable of the woman and the unjust judge that two parables, both of them to illustrate that when you pray, he must persevere and not give up. And he's saying, you know, how much more does God love to give you good things, give you the Holy Spirit, but you must persevere and not give up. So we have to persevere and not give up. And Jesus also taught us not just that we must persevere but how to persevere. And he said, this is how you persevere. You keep on asking, you keep on seeking, you keep on knocking. And in my experience, a lot of people who haven't got breakthrough don't do all three. So what's asking, asking is in your prayer time, in your devotional time or with others, you're saying, Lord, please would you give us more breakthrough in healing? I'd love to see more people get healed. Please would you do that, Lord, I'm asking you. I want to see that you did it.
I'm your disciple. You said that anyone who believes in you will do the things you've been doing, you did it, I want to do it. Please would you do that? So that's asking and you're persevering in it. I've been persevering, I've been asking God for that for 30 plus years, you know, daily. Secondly, seeking, seeking to me is that you put yourself in a faith environment. So you seek out the people who see people get healed more than you, spend time with them, ask them, what is it you're doing? Can I spend time with you? Can I pray with you when you're praying for people? You look up, you find the videos of people praying for people on YouTube or whatever, people praying for people and seeing people get healed. And you watch them, you read the books by people who know how to see people get healed. You make yourself a disciple, you go to the conferences if you need to go to the conferences. You go to the revival meeting, when you've got man camp or women camp, whatever, you're going to those things and you're going to the tents and you're joining the ministry team. So that's seeking and then knocking is you actually practice it. So in your home group or joining a ministry team or whatever, you're like, I'm going to take every opportunity I can to pray for people to get healed.
And I'm just going to do it. And I'm saying to you earlier, I've seen an upswing in how many people I'm seeing get healed recently, but also I've seen an upswing in how many times I'm praying for people to get healed. You know, I'm in multiple ministry teams, I'm going off and praying, leading naturally supernatural workshops in churches around the country. I mean, I just do it a lot, you know? So you just have to do it a lot. So keep on asking, keep on seeking, keep on knocking and persevere in the area that would apply to prophecy. If you want to hear God do the same thing, if you want to see, hear, do that. And then the other thing I'd say is it's about knowing Jesus as the healer. So read the gospels, read the four gospels and focus on all the times he healed people and ask yourself, did Jesus ever say no? Well, how did Jesus respond when people asked him to heal? He's the same today as he was said, he's the same person. How does Jesus react to me when I ask him to heal? You know, so you're asking those questions. And then in terms of the mind and the mind is the battleground for the Christian rather than the heart, I believe. When I'm praying for people, and I think I said this last time, but when I'm praying for people, there's a little tool I felt prophetately in the Lord gave me, which is a path between two ditches.
The ditch on one side is that he started thinking about yourself too much. When I'm praying for people for healing, I don't think about myself. If I start thinking about myself too much, I've committed too much sin recently. I've not spent enough time with the Lord recently. I've not been good enough prayer recently. And it means my faith shrinks down to nothing. Got to stay out on that ditch. The ditch on the other side of the path is I think about the condition too much. If I think about the condition too much, it's like, well, how am I gonna see this cancer get healed? Or how am I gonna see this condition get healed? Well, that woman with the cybersitis, I've never seen that healed before. If I've never seen it healed before, how am I gonna see it healed today? Immediately your face starts to shrink down to nothing. So I stay out on that ditch. The path in the middle is the way. The way is Jesus, Jesus is the way. So what you do is you think about Jesus. And the way I do that is usually I pray out loud, 'cause you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth. I pray out loud, thanksgiving to Jesus who he is. Thank you, Lord, that you promised to two or more of us gathered in your name, you'd be here. So you're here now, just like if you're here physically.
Thank you, Lord, that you told us to pray, you will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Thank you, there's no cancer in heaven. Thank you, Lord. There's no examples of the gospels of you saying no when someone asked you for healing and stuff like that. So that's the little, on the path. The path is Jesus. Yeah, that's good.
