Day 47: What you do with the shame you’ve carried for years. | The Walk Out

Yesterday we named shame. Today we deal with it.

TODAY’S TRUTH Shame can’t survive being said out loud to the right person.

THE READ “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” — 1 John 1:9

Confess. The word means to say the same thing. To agree with God about what’s true. To stop hiding it.

THE REAL Shame’s whole power is that it stays hidden. Shame says: if anyone knew, they’d leave. Shame says: this is too much. Shame says: keep this in the dark forever.

Shame loses every time you bring it into the light.

The first place to bring it is to God. Out loud. Specifically. Not “I’m sorry for everything I’ve done” — that’s vague and shame loves vague. “God, I’m telling you about [the actual thing]. I’ve been carrying it. I want to put it down.”

The second place — and this is the hard one — is to one other person. A safe person. Someone who has earned the right to hear it. A counselor. A pastor. A sponsor. A trusted friend who’s not going to weaponize it.

This isn’t about humiliating yourself. It isn’t about earning forgiveness through public exposure. It’s about killing the lie that says you’re alone with this. You’re not. You never were. Saying it out loud to one person breaks the spell.

Shame survives in silence. It can’t make it through being told.
