Day 52: What it means to be loved before you’ve earned anything. | The Walk Out

Most of us have a transactional understanding of love. You earn it by being lovable. You lose it by being hard to love. The math is simple and we’ve been running it our whole lives.

God doesn’t run the math.

TODAY’S TRUTH You were loved before you earned it. You can’t unearn it.

THE READ “We love because he first loved us.” — 1 John 4:19

He moved first. Before anything you did. The whole framework of “earning love” doesn’t apply to God.

In your own words — what's this saying to you?

THE REAL Think about how you were loved (or not loved) growing up. Most of us got conditional love. Love when we performed. Withdrawal when we didn’t. We were trained to believe that love depends on being good enough.

That training shaped how we approach everything. Including God.

Most of us approach God like an audition. We try to be good enough to deserve His attention. We get scared when we mess up because we think we’ve blown the audition. We hide our worst parts because we don’t think they’d survive the audition.

There is no audition.

Romans 5:8 — “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” The cross happened before any of us proved anything. The love was already in motion before we started trying to earn it. The whole thing is upside-down from the way we’ve been told love works.

This is hard to actually believe. We can repeat it as a slogan and still operate as if we have to earn it. The proof you actually believe it is that you stop trying so hard.

When you actually believe you’re loved before you earn it:

• You stop performing for God.
• You bring your worst stuff to Him faster, not slower.
• You stop being terrified of failure.
• You stop being suspicious of people who are kind to you.
• You start being able to receive love without immediately trying to repay it.
• You become harder to manipulate.

You can’t earn it. You’re not earning it. Stop trying. Receive it.
