There's a young man named Daniel who attends the church there. Daniel is in a wheelchair. He's been in a wheelchair for a while now. We're going to put a picture on the screen, I think. And Daniel, for four miles, in a wheelchair, he pushed himself to come to the church. Not because he liked it, not because it was a good walk, it was a road of dirt and stone, and he, every day, every Sunday, and every time there was a service, he came to the church. And I'm going to tell you this, it broke our hearts. When we asked what the need was,

we weren't told about projects, only about Daniel. Daniel is an excellent leader. Four miles driving his wheelchair. His mom had an accident recently and she couldn't get him out of the chair to put him in bed or take him to the bathroom. There was no opportunity for that. And I want to tell you this, North Place said yes. North Place said yes. Because when we give, we don't give in blocks or numbers, we give in things like this. In fact, he sent a video and I want to share it with you. If we have it ready, I would like us to put the video on Daniel's behalf, thanking you for buying and giving what we did away. Thank you. You know that God is precise, and He takes you to specific places and connects you with specific people to help you grow. So that's part of what I wanted to share with you this week. One of the things that I feel in my heart is that Create Space is not just a series of messages. It's an invitation to widen our capacity for God, to widen the space that exists in our lives for God. when we are in relations and in conflict and in difficult times. We preach what God is from the platform,

but we reduce it to the moment of believing in his sovereignty and in his purpose for our lives. If we don't realize that our life is a funnel, recognize that God is great in our songs, but small in our stress. I even like the phrase. Great in our sermons, but small in our relationships. What this series does is expand the funnel where it is narrow to create space for God. And the main way to create space for God is to learn to honor. Say honor. Is to learn to honor. You will hear me talk about that several times. Honor God and the people he created. Honor God and honor the people he created. And as you and I are already thinking ahead, what you are thinking is that there are people who are difficult to honor. Let's talk about that right now. If you have one next to you, don't look to the side. Don't look to the side. Just listen to what I'm going to tell you today. Because honor creates space and dishonor reduces it. And today we are going to start with the basis of honoring God through honoring people. And the fundamental basis of that is identity. Because if you and I don't know about identity, we won't be able to do what God is inviting us to do to create space.

You can't honor correctly if you don't know who you are or if you don't understand who is the person you have in front of you or next to you or around you. For you to honor, you have to know who you are. And as Naira said on Friday, when you know who you are, you will know what to do. And when you know who you are, and when you know who is the person who is around you, you will be able to honor them in the correct way that expands your capacity for God. Genesis 1 verse 26 to 27 says, There is a radical, radical, radical statement. The human being, if you didn't know, bears the image of God. And it's not a poetic, symbolic, or allegorical expression. The human being bears the image of God. In fact, the Hebrew word for image is the word Selem. It means image, statue, a visible representation. In the ancient world, when a king conquered a territory or a country, he would enter that territory and they would make statues of that king to declare who the authority was. And that's what God has done with you and with me. He created us, gave us his image, and then sent us to the world. Between that, two or three things happened with Adam and Eve, and sin entered. But we're going to talk about that in a moment. Not only are we creatures among creatures, we are living representatives of God on earth.

Theologians have tried to decipher this idea of the image of God. What does the image of God mean? And for millennia, for decades and hundreds of years, what does the image of God mean? And I'm going to break it down for you, because if you and I bear the image of God and it affects our identity and how we see ourselves, it's important that we understand it. They divide it into three categories, the three dimensions. You may have heard it in Latin. It's called Imago Dei. It's all the theory and all the theology that debunks what it means, an attempt to debunk what the image of God means. One is substantive. We are the image of God in substantive terms, in who we are. Saint Augustine and Saint Thomas Aquinas spoke, we are created in the image of God in substantive terms because we can make decisions, because we can choose, because we have intellect and will, we have rationality, the ability to think, we have creative power, we have creativity, moral conscience and the ability to love. That's what they called the ability to love. of the image of God. In other words, I gave you several theological words there.

That's very simple. Your dignity does not depend on your productivity. Your substance, your essence, is that you are the bearer of the image of God. Your substance, who in essence you are, in an ontological way, that is, what is the essence of who you are, has the image of God. Second, they spoke of the image of God in a relational way. How do we relate? When he describes this passage that we just read in Genesis, he says, let us make man, humanity, our image and our likeness. He says, let us, referring to the trinitarian nature of God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We were created to express a relationship, a relationship with God, a relationship with others, and a relationship with ourselves. When the relationship with God is broken, the relationship with myself of how I see myself is broken, the essence of who I am is distorted, and that's why there are so many problems of collective identity in our society. Because what God has already determined and defined as his image,

our society says, no, your image is not that. Your image is relative and your image is identifiable according to your preferences, or your experiences, or your emotions. You see how the culture is playing with the essence of who God says you are. When you don't know who you are, you don't know what to do, nor how to respond, nor how to treat others. The third element, functional. Well, before I go in there, honor is not optional. It is relational obedience. God created you and designed you that way. That's the relational point. Point three, God's image is functional. Authority and care. He said, multiply and take over. Taking over is co-creating with God. Taking over means taking a tree and taking wood from it, and then taking a chair. God didn't give you the chair, He didn't give you the blocks or the concrete, but He gave you all the elements.

And He said, take over, co-create with me. He created some things, and then He said, I'm going to create up to here, and from here you are going to build, and from here you are going to create. He gave us the image of God in us with the aspect of majority, of authority, and of care. Take over the fish, the animals, and fill the earth, and subdue it. Subdue it in that context. And subjugation means co-creating with what God has given us. It's the responsibility of dominion that God gives us. The direct application of this, we just saw Daniel. Daniel is not a project. Daniel was not a necessity that I brought to North Place. Daniel is the bearer of the image of God. And when you see the image of God in another person, you can't resist not honoring him. Are you with me? You were moved when I talked about Daniel. Why? Because without knowing it, you see the image of God in that boy. It's not sorrow, it's not compassion, it's not just giving to the poor. It's honoring because every human being around you carries the image of God.

This is radical, it's fundamental. To honor others, but second, to receive honor. There are people who don't fight to give honor, but there are people who fight to receive honor because they have lost the perspective that they carry the image of God. And what they think is that they carry their pain, their pain and their experience has defined them and they no longer see the image of God and they resist receiving honor. They are shocked to receive honor. Don't confuse honor with worship. Culture confuses honor with worship. We worship political leaders. We worship athletes. We worship artists. But God didn't call you to worship them. He called you to honor them. Honor is given to another human being. Worship is given to God and only to God. God carries honor and you have to honor Him, but don't confuse honor with worship. So, the image is an identity given that survives. The image is the essence of who you are. You don't win or you don't lose. The image that God placed in you doesn't negotiate. It doesn't depend on conduct, or mistakes, or your past, or culture. Y aquí estoy sintiéndome hipócrita. Cuando nos sentimos así, hemos perdido la esencia y la verdad de que somos imagen de Dios. Somos creados a la imagen de Dios. Mira conmigo, Génesis 9, 6. Hay algunos que ustedes dicen, no, pero yo creo que la imagen se perdió. No se perdió. No hay manera de perder la imagen. Escucha esto, Génesis 9, 6.

Esto es después del diluvio, ¿verdad? El arca de Noé, caben todos, caben bien. Pasó todo eso. El diluvio, ahí salieron los que van a la iglesia de chiquito. Entonces, Génesis 9, 6 ocurre después del diluvio. Después de que la humanidad en alta capacidad demostró la depravación que es capaz del ser humano. Pero mira lo que dice en 9, 6. Por eso te estoy dando el contexto. El ser humano ha sido creado a imagen de Dios mismo. Después de la caída, después de la violencia, después de la corrupción, después del juicio, Dios sigue diciendo, la humanidad lleva mi imagen. Tú llevas y portas la imagen de Dios. Él reconoce, está dañada, distorsionada por el pecado, pero no ha sido borrada. No hay nada ni nadie que borre la imagen de Dios en ti. Entonces, conocer esto es importante porque es una claridad que sana. Cuando tú entiendes esto, tu alma empieza a sanar. Si de hecho tú llevas este principio al Nuevo Testamento, Santiago lo confirma en el capítulo 3, verso 9. Y con ella, maldecimos a los hombres que han sido creados como a semejanza de Dios. Santiago trata la deshonra del ser humano

como una contradicción teológica. En otras palabras, tú no puedes adorar a Dios con esa lengua y con la misma lengua deshonrar la gente que está alrededor tuyo. Santiago dice, eso no es posible. ¿Por qué? Porque esa gente de quien tú estás hablando portan la imagen y la semejanza de Dios. Pueden ser pecadores, pero portan la semejanza. La semejanza, distinción de la imagen, es algo distinto. La semejanza es en quién tú te estás convirtiendo. La imagen es la esencia de quién tú eres. La semejanza es el camino, es la dirección. La semejanza habla de en quién nos estamos convirtiendo. El pecado daña la semejanza, pero nunca puede borrar la imagen. Ya te la dejo ahí pa' que se asiente. Esto es importante, esto es importante. Dijimos que vamos a crecer en esta temporada. Dijimos que vamos a crear espacio para Dios. Y lo primero que Dios nos mostró es, tú quieres honrarme a mí, tienes que entender que tienes que honrar a los demás. Porque cuando tú honras los demás, tú me honras a mí. Tú no puedes honrarme a mí y deshonrar a las demás personas. Pero para honrar a la gente, tienes que entender cómo yo los cree. Y ahí es donde viene esta conversación de identidad. Si la imagen de Dios, la imagen de Dios en nosotros,

sobrevive la pecaminosidad, sobrevive nuestra fragilidad y nuestra corrupción, significa que no puede ser borrada. Lo que implica que toda persona importa. Si eso no fuera cierto, tú podías categorizar a unas personas como importantes y a otras no. Pero lo que nos está incendiando Génesis Genesis 9 Caídos, pero no inútiles. Rotos, pero nunca desechables. Pecadores, pero todavía sagrados. Imagen, que es el Selem en el original, en el griego, habla de nuestra identidad. En qué me estoy convirtiendo, que es la semejanza de Dios, pues eso lo decido yo. Me parezco más a Cristo en mis decisiones, en mis relaciones, en mi identidad, entonces tengo imagen y semejanza. Pero la imagen nunca la pierdo. De hecho, escucha esto, si tú quieres saber si Jesús o cómo yo sé esto también, tú quieres saber cómo Dios ve a las personas, mira a Jesús. Te dice que Jesús es la imagen de Dios, sí o no, te dice la palabra. Ahora, cómo Jesús trataba a cada persona con la importancia que merecía. Incluso y sobre todo aquellos que la sociedad despreciaba. Piensa en los que la sociedad desprecia hoy día. Él los amaba, los buscaba, los limpiaba, los sanaba, los alimentaba. Él tocó los leprosos, dignificó las mujeres, abrazó niños, comió con pecadores y sanó a los enemigos.

Hay una profundidad en la manera en que Jesús trataba a las personas que nos habla acerca de la imagen y la semejanza. Jesús trataba a las personas porque las veía como Dios las ve, como Dios ve a las personas. Vete al Salmo 8, verso 5. Jesús veía la gloria de Dios en las personas. ¿Por qué? Porque cuando el salmista está hablando acerca de la raza humana, dice lo hiciste, o sea, el ser humano lo hiciste, poco menor que los ángeles y lo coronaste de gloria y honra. Está hablando de la raza humana ahí. Los coronastes de honra y gloria. ¿Qué es gloria? Yo sé que le estoy dando mucha palabra en hebreo hoy y usted no vino a aprender hebreo hoy, pero cuando yo voy al idioma original, puedo sacar la definición y el contexto y podérsela explicar de una forma que antes yo no la entendía. La gloria es el cabot. En el Antiguo Testamento, en el hebreo, la gloria, la palabra literalmente significa peso. La gloria de Dios no es brillo. La gloria de Dios es peso. Cuando algo es tan pesado que le cala hondo, es peso. Cabot significa peso y significa importancia. Y el salmista dijo, cuando Dios nos creó, lo coronaste con gloria, coronaste al ser humano con cabot, con peso, con importancia y con honra. La gloria de Dios es aquello que no se puede ignorar

y no se puede trivializar. Cuando Dios pone su gloria sobre el ser humano, está diciendo, esta persona tiene peso. Esta persona tiene importancia. Esta persona es valiosa para mí. Cuando Juan 3.16, que todos lo sabemos, dice, porque de tal manera amó Dios al mundo, que dio a su único hijo lo más preciado que él tenía, ¿sabes por qué lo dio? Porque tú importas. Para Dios, tú tienes peso. Para Dios, tú eres importante. Que ha hecho el pecado, el dolor y la experiencia nuestra, ha minimizado quien yo soy. Y yo me creo, yo no soy importante. Yo no soy suficiente. Yo no valgo nada. Y Dios te dice, yo te coroné con mi cabot. Yo te coroné con mi gloria. Y mi gloria significa que tú eres importante. Tengas papeles, tengas educación, estés casado, estés divorciado, estés soltero, estés joven, estés viejo, seas amarillo, negro, blanco. No importa, la cultura te pone etiquetas, la experiencia te pone etiquetas. Pero Dios dice, tú importas. Y cuando te ve en lo más bajo... And he says, I know you're there and that hurts. I'm allowing you to recognize what is already in you. Culture tells you, identity is fragile and it comes and goes. Think of all the conflict and diversity of opinions regarding identity. Not to mention gender, just identity. And it tells you, identity is fragile, it's changing, it's preference, all that. But God tells you, identity is firm. Identity is in me. And when you don't let yourself be carried away by emotions or pain or experiences and identity is in the essence of who you are, the image of who He created you. Not only does it make you strong, but it allows you to honor Him and honor others.

Culture tells you, you have to build your image. There are even consultants to build your image. Yes or no? You put on this outfit, you drive this car, you get this job, this title, this education, and then you will have an image. Do you see the distortion of sin there? And how it disguises itself so beautifully. The devil has no horns, no tail, nothing. What it has to tell you is, you have lost your image. Restore your image. And it tells you, do such a thing to restore your image. What does God say? The image, I entrust it to you. The image, I gave it to you at the moment of your creation. At the moment of your essence. Failure defines you, culture tells you. But God tells you, grace shapes you. The pastoral application of this, many do not fight to honor others, they are fighting to honor themselves. Quiero dejarte este punto. Cuando tú honras a otras personas, el embudo que es ancho arriba se empieza a ensanchar abajo. Esta es la forma en cómo honramos a Dios. Y eso es lo que estamos haciendo, creando espacio. Y crear espacio no es fácil. Usted lo sabe, con todos los tereques que tiene en su casa y tiene que sacarlo y no sabe cómo hacerlo. Crear espacio no es fácil. Tenemos el alma llena de tereques. Tenemos el corazoncito lleno de tereques. Y Dios está diciendo, te voy a sacar. Porque la honra revela lo que realmente creemos acerca de Dios. La deshonra es vivir como si Dios no estuviera presente en la persona que tiene frente a ti. Y quiero cerrar con esto. En gran medida, yo lamento el momento cultural en el que estamos viviendo.

Porque a través de las redes sociales, a través de líderes políticos de todos los partidos, hablamos de la gente y nos referimos a la gente, la creación de Dios que porta su imagen como si la gente fuera descartable. Desde políticas de inmigración, hasta decisiones políticas, hasta cómo se tratan. Como si la gente fuese descartable. Te uso y te desecho. Te uso y ya no eres importante. Ese es el clima. Es el clima cultural que estamos viviendo. Pero no solamente lo hacen los políticos. Lo hemos hecho hasta los religiosos. Bueno, pues con esa gente no me junto porque son la chusma. No me junto con los bienes cristianos. A lo mejor no lo digo con mis palabras, pero ¿con quién me relaciono? Si me relaciono con alguien que está muy lejano a mis creencias, relaciono como, ay, quiero ayudarte. Una compasión hipócrita que no viene del corazón de Dios porque no reconoce. Cuando tú ves el corazón de Dios, tú o te agachas donde esa persona está, o lo levantas donde tú estás y le dices, yo veo la imagen de Dios en ti. Tú no la ves, pero yo veo la imagen de Dios en ti. El clima cultural nos afecta en cómo vemos el tema de la identidad en nosotros y en la imagen de Dios. Por eso yo te decía, revela lo que realmente yo creo, lo que creemos acerca de Dios. Pero ¿qué pasaría si esta iglesia se conociera como la gente que ve, como la gente que se detiene, como la gente que presta atención a los demás, como la gente que se rehúsa a tratar a cualquier persona independientemente de quien sea como insignificante? ¿Qué pasaría? ¿Qué pasaría? ¿Cómo cambiaría nuestro matrimonio si veo a la persona al lado mío como el portador de la imagen de Dios?

¿Cómo cambiaría la crianza de nuestros hijos? ¿Cómo cambiaría los conflictos relacionados? If I recognize that that person carries the image of God, that is to create space. That is to take seriously the image of God in people. Jesus said in Matthew 25, 40, I assure you that everything you did for one of these brothers of mine, of the most humble, you did it for me. What is Jesus telling us? He treats people as if He sees me in them. He treats people as if He sees me in them. So, let us be this week, and always, by the side of those friends who suffer. This is important, because we become children when we receive Christ Jesus as our Lord and our Savior. When we confess our sin, when we declare that Jesus Christ is the Lord and the Savior of our lives. In a few moments, we will say a prayer as a church, as a community of faith. But before, I felt that I wanted to create space, to make that clear distinction. You bear the image of God, but you are only children of God when you receive the being adopted into the family of God. I'm not talking about religion. I'm not talking about religion.
