Thou Shall Not Lie | Family Road Trip | Pastor Tim Payne
and full effect, God thank you that well there was sin and where sin abounded, God thank you that grace much more abounded, thank you that grace greater than our sin, thank you Jesus, thank you for your unmerited favor, that's your goodness. And it follows us and it chases us down and you're a god of abundance. You have no lack. You're a god of abundance. And Lord, we thank you for what you've done in the past. But God, we say thank you for your goodness today. Thank you Lord. For you never change. David said, I've been young and now I'm old, but I've never seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seat begging for bread. God thank you, Lord, that we are not beggars. God thank you that we are sons and daughters of the Most High God. Thank you Jesus, that your promises, your word is yes and amen. God thank you Lord, that it changes us from the inside out. And Lord, our soul cries out today. Jesus, don't just speak to us but change us today, make us more like you. We prayed in the name, we prayed in the name above every name, we prayed in the name of Jesus. And all God's people said, amen and amen. Well, thank you, thank you to our worship team. Come on, you guys did a great job. So proud of you all. Thank you all pastor, Michael, thank you man. Thank you so much. What a treat. I love young people. When we were planning grandparents day, we had talked about this, I don't know, maybe two years ago and we said, we need to make this bigger. We need to make it better. Let's get our youth up on stage. Let's get them quote in God's word. Let's get them lead us in worship and they don't have JV, junior, varsity, Holy Spirit. They have the same Holy Spirit, the same power that raised Jesus from the dead. That's what they have. And so I love that, man. Someone was telling me that there's a kid in the elementary that can pray the pain off the walls. And I said, well, let's get them up on stage. Let's put a mic in his hand. Let's let the kid pray. Come on, it's going to happen. I'm glad you're here. And you're here. This is the early crowd. Let's go. Look at you guys. That's amazing. Come on. It's okay to smile in church. Tell your neighbor at this church. We smile. It's okay to smile. I'm glad you're here. It's grandparents. Grandparents day. Come on. How many grandparents raised your hand? I see some. How many grandparents? I see them. Let's go. Come on, put your hands together, guys. It was so thankful for you all. So thank you guys may be seated. We are in a series, Family Road Trip. And man, I'll tell you what, we are coming down to the end. We've been talking about the Ten Commandments and what an incredible series this has been. I don't know about you guys, but the Ten Commandments. How many of you realized
something you didn't see before? I may have learned something you didn't know before. How many a little bit different, a little bit better, a little bit more like Jesus. So the law was given to teach us that we needed Jesus. And you see, you only got to kill one person to be a murderer. That means you only got to steal one thing to be a thief. Me and you only got to tell one lie to be a liar. And the truth is we're all guilty. Not just as sin, but we're guilty of sin. And I'm thankful though for the blood of Jesus that washes away our sin. Now, I got an appetizer and then I got a message. All right. But you know, the appetizer is for the grandparents. But if you're approaching that direction, or if one day you might think you might be a grandparent one day someday, I want you to listen to this. This is what the Holy Spirit put on my heart. Now, if you're here and you have kids, raise your hands. All right, you got kids. Part of this is for you too. And here's what the Lord put on my heart to tell you. Wisdom is the principal thing. The Bible says, "We'll get wisdom." I've heard too many grandparents talk about and not complaining, not griping, not being negative, and when it comes to our grandkids, sometimes it's just like eggshells. Like we just, we don't, we don't, I kind of get the tension there, right? 'Cause you're not their parents, but you're their grandparents. You're like their fun parents. You know, I mean, you're their grandparents. It's just grand. I got a picture of my grandpa. I call him Papa. He's with Jesus now. He died at the age of 91, but I got his picture on my desk. Papa meant the world to us. And here's what I want to say. If you're a parent, if you're a parent, you got kids,
you already know we need help. Can't do this on our own. And I'm not even just talking about the babysitting. I'm talking about the wisdom piece. And so if you have kids, you ought to, if you have godly parents, you ought to invite them to speak into your life. Mom and Dad, what do you see? How am I doing? What do I need to change? 'Cause they see it, trust me. They've been waiting for this moment. They got a list. And it started the moment you had your first kid. They got a long list. It's been the goodness of God keeping their mouths closed. But instead of grandparents like wondering where the line is and we don't want to fend and don't want to hurt precious little feelings, all that, we ought to invite the voice of wisdom into our lives. And we ought to do it in front of our kids because some things are taught, some things are caught. And then we ought to invite them, please speak into our kids' lives. Like don't just assume they know they have permission to speak freely, like ask. And they shall be given unto you. Are you with me? And you know, it's funny 'cause I know as we grow up, we're like, I'm doing that different, Mom and Dad.
I'm not gonna say what Mom and Dad said to me. And then there we go, you know? We say the same thing. But you know, some wisdom, it just doesn't die. And we need it. And here's what I want to speak now to the grandparents. I'm looking at several grandparents here today. We need you. If you've retired, have fun. Congratulations. But refire in the middle of your retire. Because your kids still need you. And your grandkids still need you. And the good Lord really put this with today, how it all worked out. Because today we're gonna talk about thou shall not lie. Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. And here's where I want to encourage you. Jesus said, you shall know that, come on preach to me. You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. Grandparents, you have been around. You've seen a lot. You've experienced a lot. And you know truth. If you're walking with God, you've been walking with truth for a long time. And so our kids need that truth. And as someone's got kids and parents, older parents still alive, I need that truth from them. And so here's the thing about, hey, don't lie. Is, you know, a lie is not just something that we say.
Whew. There's a spirit of living God right here. Spoke to my heart this week. A lie is something you could just believe. Go back to the Garden of Eden. There was a lie that was told. It was a, and there's really no such thing. And that's what I want to debunk today. But we would say it was a half truth. No such thing as a half truth. A half truth is a full lie. Come on, tell your neighbor. Turn to him right now. Turn to him right now and say a half truth is a full lie. If you don't believe this, open your eyes because we're going to look into the Word of God today. And we're going to see, we're going to see in the New Testament what God thinks about it. We're going to look at it. But grandparents, we love you. We celebrate you. I wasn't supposed to tell you, yeah, that's a good place to clap. That's a good place to clap. Now we got an ice cream party. Not after this gathering, but after the next gathering, and after the next gathering. But I just love you enough to tell you, if you want to stick around, this worship's so good. You want to stick around. There's ice cream in your future. That's what I'm talking about. Let's go to Exodus 2016. Exodus chapter 2016. When God gave us the 10 commandments, he did not give us the 10 suggestions.
He didn't give us 10 ideas. He gave us 10 commandments. And this command teaches us not to lie. Don't bear for me! six things the Lord hates. Yeah, there's seven that are actually an abomination to them. And one of them is a tongue that tells lies. And the problem with a lie is who the lie is connected to. Who's the father of all lies? Satan. So wherever there's a lie, there's the enemy at work. And God, he don't play with lying. I don't know about you guys, but let me tell you how I grew up, right? If we got in trouble at school, we got in trouble at home. Anybody come from that kind of background? If we got a whooping at school, we got a way and mom and dad didn't chase us around the house. They didn't give us a 30 second head start. They told us when to stand, where to stand, we got a but they said, if you act up at school, you're gonna get it at home too. But there was one thing about my parents that I'm telling you, they'll put the fear God in us. And they said, listen, it doesn't matter what you do. Do not lie about it. Do you know why we lie? We lie when we get scared. We lie when we get scared. Oh, Abraham. She's not my wife. She's my sister. Go ahead and take her. She's spending the night for a couple nights. Hey, sis, make sure you text me. Make sure everything's all right. Okay. We'll see you. Love you sis. Because he was afraid of his old life. He was afraid. Someone's gonna take his life to get with his wife. Y'all remember the story. Lying. God says, don't lie. We ought to teach our kids this. Wanna say, hey, it's one thing if you do wrong, we've, mom and daddy's done it, right? And if your mommy, you're gonna say, trust me, daddy did it. If you're your daddy, you can say, trust me, mama, like it's just on her side of the face, right? You can say, no, we messed up. We don't expect you to be perfect. But we do expect you to be honest. Just to be honest. Boy, I tell you, I've told some lies. Have you told some lies? You didn't know you're sitting next to liar today, did you? Everybody here sitting next to liar. Every single person in this place. Thou shall not bear false witness. Can't you name it? Don't lie. That's not lie. Don't do it. So that should be the end of it. But we're gonna look at Acts chapter five. Let's go there together. Acts chapter five. An alliance and safari. This is quite the story.
It's right here. This is the acts of the early church. And I believe with all my heart, it is descriptive of what happened. But I also believe there's so much in here prescriptive of what God wants to happen. The Holy Spirit didn't just show up for the early church. The Holy Spirit shows up for the church today. I'm thankful for that. I'm thankful. In a month, I'll be in Israel. I'll be in Israel supposed to be the largest gathering. And it's going to be global. I'll be telling you more about it here in the future. But we're gonna have prayer at the wall. And they got a whole, I mean, they got a thousand pastors coming in. But that's not the biggest. But they're streaming this thing worldwide. And on October the seventh, a day that the enemy meant for evil, we're gonna watch the Holy Spirit turn around and use it for good. And we're gonna pray for Israel. And we're gonna stand in the gap for Israel. And we're gonna declare we're friends with Israel. If you don't understand that, I'd like to talk to you and just show you what God says about that. But God's people here, God's moving in his church. He's breathing on his church. Big things are happening. And whenever big things are happening, that means big attacks are happening. From the context of this story, they're in the middle of persecution. So there's trouble externally, but now there's trouble internally. And there's a husband and a wife and, well, let's read the Scripture. Verse one, Acts five, but there was a certain man. Men, God holds us accountable. [BLANK_AUDIO] Often wonder what would happen if it just even had a bite and then Adam said, "No, no, no." He just said, "No, for she took a bite." He's the Lord of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It doesn't mean men rule and women do it. It means that God holds the man accountable. And so notice what happens here. There was a certain man, a certain man, a distinguished man named Ananias Hu with his wife, Safira, sold some property. Anybody here ever sell some property? They sold some property. Anybody here ever sold some property and given the money to the church?
Don't raise your hand. I'm just asking. I'm playing seeds in Jesus' name. As right here in God's word, look at this. He sold some property. He brought someone say the next word, part. He brought part of the money to the apostles. Anything wrong with that, anything wrong with selling property, anything wrong with being generous, bringing part of it? See when we tithe, we bring the first part. If you're Christian, you're not tithe and you're robbing God. That's his word. Don't get twisted with me. Take it up with your Creator. That's what he says. He says, "You rob me when you don't bring the first." That's the tithe. Offerings are what's over and above the tithe. The Bible says in Malachi 3, God says, "Test me, only time in history." God's saying, "Test me." You read the Old Testament. He's like, "Don't test me. I'm not going to go good. You're going to lose. You don't want none of this." When it comes to our money and possessions, God cares about your money and possessions. God cares about not just how good you look. God cares about how good our hearts really, truly are. Here's the problem with Ananias and Sephira, they wanted to look more than they were. Nothing wrong with being generous.
Generosity doesn't take the place of obedience. I got a message today. Generosity is good. You're like, "I'm going to put some money in the basket. That's good." If you're a Christian, that doesn't take the place of obedience. The tithe is obedience. You can't get to second base and be okay if you never tag first. They will tag you out, but we got Christians that they skip first base, they run around in second base. Look how generous we are, and that's maybe what was happening here. You got Ananias and Sephira, they sell some land and they bring part of the money. Nothing wrong so far. Now the next word is where we get into some high water, claiming it was the what? The full amount. They were claiming it was something it wasn't. With his wife's consent, he kept the rest. Then Peter said, "Ananias, why have you led Satan fill your heart? Not fill your wife's heart. Fill your heart. Can we going to hold you accountable because you're the head of the house? You're supposed to be leading the house. Why did you allow Satan to fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit. See when we lie, we lie to God. He's the truth. So rebellion, basic definition of rebellion is believing a lie. Adam and Eve rebelled against God when they believed the lie that if they ate this fruit, their eyes would be open. Were their eyes open?
Did they know the difference between right and wrong all of a sudden? Did the devil tell them just a little bit of the truth and a whole lot of lie? Which was a lie and we see here, boy Peter, he just tells it like it is. He just tells it straight. He said the property was yours to sell or not sell as you wished. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away. They didn't do anything wrong with just giving part of it away. The problem was when they pretended it was a full amount. See, that was the fear of man. They wanted, they had some greed. And Peter goes right to it. How did Peter know that? The Holy Spirit. Holy Spirit told him. You know God still speaks. You know God still will speak to you. Do you know God will speak through his word to you? You can open up this book and he'll speak to you right now. But you know the Holy Spirit will also speak to you. The Holy Spirit spoke to Peter and I'm telling you, Peter doesn't shy away. He doesn't worry about their feelings. He doesn't worry about them leaving the church. He gives them truth and he says, oh, listen, this money was yours to keep or to give away. But how could you do a thing like this? You weren't lying to us but to God. You see, a partial truth is a full on lie. No such thing is a little white lie, there's no such thing. No such thing is a little white lie. That's the devil's lie. Because lying is not a little thing in the eyes of God because it stands straight in defiance
in the face of Almighty God. It is anti to God's character. It is if you could say, it is anti Christ because Christ is character. He's the way. He's the truth. He's the life. He is always the same. He's the same yesterday, today and forever. He doesn't change. He was truthful back then. He's truthful today and I'm thankful we can count on Jesus to be truthful tomorrow. You never change, always tell the truth. How could you do? You weren't lying to us but, so why is this number one? Number one, no such thing as white lie, the half truth is a full on lie. Number one, but number two, number two, whenever you lie, you're lying to God. Not just lying to yourself, not just lying to other people but it's a sin against the Holy One. Peter said, "You weren't lying to us but to God." As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the floor and died. It's like offering time and like, "I got it. We sold it. Here it is. It's all of it. God is good." And Peter said, "You lied." And then he died. That's what happened. The whole church was like, "Hey buddy, straighten up." And I said, "Hold on just a second.
Got some more. I just passed that plate again. I just want to be honest. I want to see Jesus not today." Not like that. Yeah. He died. That's what happened. Everyone who heard about it, they were terrified. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. But fools despise wisdom and instruction. Now look at this, everyone who heard about it was terrified. Then some young men got up. Young men be the first to get up. Don't be the last. All the other people do it. No, man. Jump up. Be a servant. Get to work. Tell my son, "Put your phone down. You're missing life. Your next is going to hurt in the future. If you're not careful, that future is going to come quicker than you think it's going to come. Because your head weighs way more here than it does here. You're going to hurt yourself. I'm just trying to help. Young men got up, they wrapped him in a sheet, and they took him out, and they buried him. I like that the Bible says that young men just got up.
They've just another Sunday. They're like, "Well, that's what happens when you lie. Pick him up, Johnny. Pick him up." That was his fault. He skipped last week. You're just saying what happened last week, somebody be trying to come up here lying in the church, in the house of God, they just buried him. Just buried him like it was another day. No one had to tell them what to do. They just like, "All right. We got it." That means someone had taught them, someone had instructed, someone had to disciple them. When someone dies, when lying to the Lord, they said, "Listen, whenever you see something, way for someone else to do it. your employees would just do that and just step over the piece of trash. They're like, well, I'm going to pick this up. I'm going to take a little ownership here. And then three hours later, here comes his wife, Sephira. She's all dolled up, smelling good, looking good. His wife came in, not knowing what had happened. And Peter's got some wisdom here. Because notice Peter doesn't tell her what happened. Notice Peter asked your question to see where her heart was. You know how to tell someone that they're lying? Ask them a question when you already know the truth. Don't move right now. You look guilty. Don't move. Just stay just like you are. Don't shift in your chair. She didn't know what happened. Peter asked her, was this the price that you and your husband received for the land? Yes, she replied. That was the price. And the boys are like, get the sheet. Get the sheet. Tell them boys start digging another hole. He can't make this up. This is not Old Testament, y'all. That's in the New Testament here. Y'all with me? Okay. What are we talking about? Don't lie. That was the price. And it cost her. She said, yes, that was the price. And it cost her. Peter said, how could the two of you even think of conspiring to mess with our pastor? To mess with our church. To mess with our church finances. No. How could you even think of conspiring
to test the spirit of the Lord like this? You thought I was kidding. Here we go. Next verse, the young man who buried her husband. No, no. Peter said, excuse me, the young man who buried your husband. She's like, what in here about this? They are just outside the door. And they get ready to carry your butt out too. Instantly, she fell to the floor and died. When the young man came in, saw she was dead. Let's go, Johnny. You know what to do? They carried her out. They buried her beside her husband. But notice the last verse. And that's where we end. Great fear. The fear of the Lord. You know why I send a bounce in my heart and in your heart sometimes? Because we don't fear the Lord like we should. Scripture says here, instantly, she died. But great fear instantly gripped the entire church. That means God got everybody's attention. And everybody else who had heard what had happened. And then if you keep reading the chapter, which I encourage you, there's some homework for you. Keep reading the chapter because you know what happened? People started getting saved. People started getting healed. Just don't lie. There's no such thing as a little white lie. You know what else is lying? Lying is when you know the whole story, but you only tell the part that gonna make you look good. When you're like, oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, right here. But you won't tell this part. And you know what this would do? Watch this. You know what this would do? This would change so much. Imagine going to where you work, where people maybe they don't tell the truth. You're not obnoxious about it, but you begin to just tell, you're sitting in a board meeting and instead kind of, you know, just yeah, going along with other people patting the numbers or talking about culture is really great when culture really isn't great. Just saying, hey, I just want to be truthful. And here's the thing about the truth. People need to know it. I mean, somebody got to say it. Somebody got to have the courage to say, I'm going to speak up. And it may cost you your life. It did for Charlie Kirk. It did for Jesus Christ. But they have no regrets. But I don't want to hurt them. You know what happens in the church? Let me tell you what happens in the church. And I fight this every step. I fight this every step. Something over here, this happened. And this needs to be addressed. But then we don't, we talk about it, but then we don't want to don't say anything because then they're going to know who said something. And I get that, you know, I'm human. I get it. I get it. I get it. But watch this. Watch this. What would happen if we just did what the book said? What would happen if we just were truth tellers? What would happen if we had...
problem with us which is like hey let's get to the truth here let's just talk we're at a football game couple hours ago in atlanta and uh... we're watching this lady she may have drink a little too much but she was fighting with everybody she's fighting the people side of people behind her people in front of her and then her and this woman were getting into it i'm like this not gonna go good the husbands are sitting there like don't do it don't do it and they're like i'm fixing to hit up and they were just and then one woman one woman turned around and listen to her and then i couldn't hear everything she was saying but she calm this woman down she could calm her down and then i saw her talking to her and i saw her like she wouldn't do it like this but i i saw her kind of like you know she can say like you got a little responsibility here too she was telling some truth and grace precedes truth grace precedes truth church got to get we got to get back to truth god says just don't lie don't bear false witness about your neighbor don't go right don't don't try to make yourself look bigger better than you are don't try to impress other Christians that you're closer to jesus than you really are
