Weekly Word Episode 5 | Psalm 42:1, John 4:13-14
Scripture and uncover a truth that can be applied to our daily lives today We are going to be in Psalm chapter 42 and we may peek over to John chapter 4 as well in Psalm chapter 42 verse 1 it says as the deer pants for streams of water So my soul pants for you my God And have you ever been really thirsty like the kind of thirsty where your mouth is dry your head is aching and you'd give Anything for a cold drink of water, and I remember I was training for a run a years ago And it was in the middle of August So perfect time to go outside in Florida and do a run and I was going for my long run I was going for more than I've ever gone and I remember about halfway through I remember thinking I've made a terrible mistake. I left my water at home I continued the run and by the time I got home and I down like three or four tall glasses of cold water It was overwhelming. I was so thirsty that's the image that David paints in Psalm 42 a Deer desperately panting for water, but it's not a physical thirst that he's talking about it's spiritual You know we all know what it's like to be spiritually dry when your prayers feel empty and your your worship feels flat And you're going through the motions, but your soul feels parched What's interesting is is why the psalmist feels this way. He says my soul thirst For God for the living God, when can I go and meet with him? He doesn't say my soul thirst for blessings or or for peace or or for answers He says I just need God Sometimes we chase spiritual substitutes Busyness and entertainment achievement even ministry. They might distract us for a while, but none of them truly Satisfied because the soul can't live on substitutes. It was designed for presence And I love how Jesus's words and John for really speak to this and they're so powerful He's sitting at a well talking to a Samaritan woman who's been trying to fill her emptiness her thirst In her life with relationships and he says to her in chapter 4 verse 13 through 14 Whoever drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water. I give them will never thirst Indeed the water I give will become in them a spring of water willing up to eternal life He's saying I am that living water Everything else will leave you thirsty again success attention approval even religion
But when you draw near to me you find what your soul's been longing for all along See Jesus doesn't just quench your thirst. He's becoming the well inside of you that never runs dry So maybe your soul's been feeling a little dry lately Maybe you've been trying to fill it with things that don't last can I encourage you today? Stop chasing the temporary Start sitting in the presence of the eternal Worship when you don't feel like it open the Bible when you feel like scrolling pray not to check a box But to connect with the one who made you when your soul feels dry don't do more Draw near because presence quenches what performance never can let's pray Father God, we thank you Lord for the truths that you unpack in the Psalmist thousands of years ago And then and then again thousands of years ago where Jesus Really addresses what it means to have that living water inside of us that well that never runs dry Lord God if there's anyone watching this that may feel dry I ask that you flood their lives with your presence that you Encourage them and worship and in prayer and getting into the word that they can reconnect with you Lord God I ask that you bless them today and in Jesus name. I pray. Amen. Thanks so much. Have a blessed week
