Weekly Word Episode 1 | John 10:7-11
happy to have you today. And this is the first episode of our new series known as the weekly word. And so what this is gonna look like each week, we'll put out just this small three, five minute devotional just to help you set your week off right. And today for our first episode, we're gonna be reading from John chapter 10, we're gonna be going through verses seven through 11. So if you wanna follow along, go ahead and turn to, turn there now, and this is gonna be in the ESV version. John chapter 10, verse seven. So Jesus again said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. "All who came before me are thieves and robbers, "but the sheep did not listen to them. "I am the door. "If anyone enters by me, he will be saved, "and will go in, go out, and find pasture. "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. "I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. "I am the good shepherd. "The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep." Now, I really love this passage, and we're gonna take a few minutes to just break it down because this whole chapter, chapter 10, is a parable. It's an analogy of what Jesus is trying to teach the people. He's trying to reveal himself to them through these stories. And if we start looking at verse seven through nine, it gives us this idea that it looks like that there were people
that came before Jesus, that they were trying to lead people astray, they were trying to build up their own, their egos and their glory and that kind of thing, and they were wrong. They preached an incorrect message, but when Jesus came, now he is bringing that life for them, that he is the Messiah that the people have been waiting for, and it's true for them, and it's still true for us today. That's why in verse nine, he says, "I'm the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go out and find pastor." It's not through anybody else or through anything else, but it is only through Jesus alone. And then in verse 10 and 11, we start to see this contrast between Jesus and the thief. And this thief is somebody that is coming to steal, to kill, destroy, they're here to take everything from us, right, where Jesus on the other side of that, he is trying to bring life, and he's trying to bring it abundantly. And so when we look at a passage like this, and it's basic essence, these five verses is the gospel. In verse seven, Jesus is promising that he is the door, like it's him, he is the Messiah. And in verse nine, he's calling people to come through him, not through any other means. And then verse 11 is saying how he's one day going to lay down his life for the sheep. And the sheep is us, and that's the good news, and that's the message.
And so I hope this was meaningful to you today, and just taking a quick minute to bring the word to you. And before we end, let's just pray together. Dear God, I thank you for this time. I thank you for this word, and I pray that it will be uplifting for everybody who hears it. Thank you, God, for sending Jesus to die and rise again for us. And in your name, we pray, amen. Awesome, guys, well, thank you so much for joining us today, and we'll see you next time.
