A king, a forgotten son, and a seat no one expected

David is finally king, but this chapter does not linger only on power, palaces, or victory. It moves from the Ark of God entering Jerusalem, to David dancing before the Lord with all his might, to a promise from God that leaves him sitting in wonder: “Who am I, that you have brought me this far?”

Then David asks the question no king was expected to ask: is anyone left from Saul’s family that he can show kindness to for Jonathan’s sake?

That question leads to Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, lame in both feet, living in Lo Debar, and likely afraid that the king’s men have come to punish him. Instead, David gives him back Saul’s land and welcomes him to eat at the king’s table always.

  • David dances before the Lord, even when Michal despises him for it.
  • God tells David he will not build Him a house, God will build David a house.
  • Mephibosheth expects judgment, but receives kindness for Jonathan’s sake.
  • At the king’s table, he is seen not as an outcast, but like one of the king’s sons.

This retelling of David’s story points to grace in one of its clearest forms: a place you did not earn, offered by a king who came looking for you.
