The final chapter of David’s story

David returns to Jerusalem after Absalom, shows mercy to the man who cursed him, faces the weight of another sin, and refuses to offer God something that costs him nothing.

In this final episode of David’s story, the shepherd boy, warrior, king, father, sinner, and psalm writer comes to the end of his life. He hands the kingdom to Solomon, speaks his last words, and leaves behind a legacy that is honest about failure, repentance, mercy, and the faithfulness of God.

  • Shime begs for mercy, and David spares his life.
  • Mephibosheth meets the king with quiet loyalty.
  • David takes a census, then confesses, “I have sinned greatly.”
  • A plague falls, and David asks God’s judgment to fall on him instead of the people.
  • David buys the threshing floor where Solomon would later build the temple.
  • Solomon is named king, and David tells him to walk in the ways of the Lord.
  • David’s story points ahead to the Son of David, born in Bethlehem.

David’s life was not clean, and Scripture does not pretend it was. But every time he failed, he came back to God. His story ends with a reminder that your story is not finished either: the Lord is your shepherd, and goodness and mercy are still following you.
