David, Part 10: Absalom | Bible Stories Retold
David, Absalom, and the cost of silence
Absalom rises at the city gate, wins the hearts of Israel, and turns a family wound into a kingdom-wide rebellion. David flees Jerusalem barefoot and weeping, cursed on the road, abandoned by trusted voices, and still refusing revenge.
When the armies finally meet in the forest of Ephraim, David gives one public command: "Deal gently for my sake with the young man, with Absalom." But the victory David receives is not the answer he wants. The king waits at the gate asking only one question, "Is the young man Absalom safe?"
This episode follows the heartbreak behind Absalom’s revolt, the silence that grew inside David’s house, and the cry of a father who wins the war but loses his son: "If only I had been the one instead of you."
