SERMON NOTES:

Minding the Gap

Standing in the Gap for the Children God Gives You

Ezekiel 22:30 (NKJV) So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land, that I should not destroy it; but I found no one.

“Every child born into this world arrives with a gap already present. A space between where they are and where God intends them to go. Between who they are today and who they are called to become. Between the inheritance of the world they were born into — and the inheritance of the kingdom they were born for.”

“God designed parents to fill that gap. Not to be perfect. Not to have it all figured out. But to be present. To be consistent. To be the bridge that carries their child toward blessing — and the wall that holds the ground once they get there.”

The Picture of the Gap

“Standing in the gap is an active, intentional, daily decision to do three things.”

First — You Become the Bridge.

“When you stand in the gap for your child, you become the bridge that moves them from that left side to this right side.”

“Every act of faithful parenting is a step across the gap. You are carrying them. You are pulling them toward the inheritance God prepared for them before they knew they needed it.”

Your child doesn't need a perfect parent. They need a parent who shows up as the bridge between where they are and where God is calling them.

Second — You Become the Wall.

“The wall is what you become when you stand between your child and everything that wants to drag them back to where they started.”

“A bridge moves the child forward. A wall holds the ground.”

Faithful parents are both. They move their child into blessing — and they stand between that child and every force that would pull them back into bondage.

Third — You Are Not Standing Alone.

“The gap is too wide for any parent to fill in their own strength.”

“You are standing in the gap. But you are not the gap-filler. God is. You are the willing vessel. He is the power.”

The most important thing you will ever do as a parent is not try harder. It is stay close to the One who fills gaps with His presence.

Parents Who Stood in the Gap

1. Hannah — The Mother Who Stood in the Gap Through Grief

1 Samuel 1:27–28 (NKJV)

“Lord, if You give me a son, I will give him back to You. I will stand in the gap for this child by surrendering him to the One who gave him to me.”

Your child does not belong to you. They were entrusted to you. Standing in the gap means holding them with open hands — dedicated to God before they ever know His name.

2. Mary — The Mother Who Said Yes Before She Understood

Luke 1:38 (NKJV)

“Mary became the bridge before she could see the other side. She stepped into the gap before she knew how wide it was.”

You don't need to understand everything about the assignment to say yes to it. Mary said yes in the uncertainty. That is what parenting requires of every one of us.

3. Manoah and His Wife — The Parents Who Co-Parented with Intention

Judges 13:8 (NKJV)

“God, send the messenger back. Teach us what to do. Tell us how to raise this child.”

The gap is not one parent's responsibility — it is the partnership that covers the child completely. When two parents stand in the gap together, they build a wall that is twice as strong.

4. Abraham — The Parent God Chose Because He Would Lead His House

Genesis 18:19 (NKJV)

“God knew Abraham would be the bridge — carrying the covenant from his household into the next generation — and the wall, holding the line of faith against everything that tried to breach it.”

Your child is not a side project. They are your primary assignment. And God chose you for it before they ever took their first breath.

5. Job — The Parent Who Covered His Children in Prayer Every Morning

Job 1:5 (NKJV)

“Job rose early and stood in the gap for each one of his children.”

The most powerful thing you will ever do for your child is pray for them before they wake up. Stand in the gap before they even know a gap exists.

What Standing in the Gap Actually Costs

“Standing in the gap costs you something.”

“Parenting costs you your comfort. Your sleep. Your resources. Your plans. It costs you the ability to say that's not my problem — because from the moment that child is placed in your arms, everything is your problem.”

The gap you stand in today becomes the foundation your child builds their life on tomorrow.

“You are not just raising a child. You are building a foundation that will outlast you.”

The Promise Is for Your Children

Acts 2:38–39 (NKJV) Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

The promise is to you and to your children.

“When you stand in the gap for your child, you are not standing there empty-handed. You are carrying the promise of God into the gap with you.”

“The gap you stand in today is not just covered by your presence. It is covered by the promise of God. And His promise does not expire, does not weaken, and does not fail.”

The Gap He Wanted to Fill

“When one parent cannot fill the gap — when one family is left standing with a space that nobody should have to carry alone — the church steps in.”

“We become the bridge alongside this mother. We become the wall around this child. We surround this family and we say: you are not standing in this gap by yourself. We are standing here with you.”

We do not let this gap stay empty. We fill it together.

Transition to Baby Dedication

“This is not a ceremony. This is a declaration.”

“These parents are stepping into the gap. They are saying: I will be the bridge. I will be the wall. I will stand between my child and everything that wants to pull them from their destiny — for as long as God gives me breath.”

“And this church — every person in this room — is standing in that gap with them.”
