THE WISE MAN BUILT HIS HOUSE UPON THE ROCK

A Lesson in Storms… and Eternity

Matthew 7:24-27; 1 Corinthians 10:4; Hebrews 13:8

There are some songs you just don’t forget.

You may forget sermons.You may forget outlines.But you don’t forget:

“The wise man built his house upon the rock…”

We sang it with motions.We smiled.We laughed.

But what we didn’t realize is—Jesus wasn’t giving us a children’s song.

He was giving us a life-or-death warning.

Because this is not just about construction…It’s about what stands when everything else falls apart.

And even deeper than that…

This is not just a lesson about storms.

This is a lesson about eternity. Yes, Eternity, because we have been building to just withstand the storms here, but there is an even greater storm coming. 

Matthew 6:19–21

“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth… but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…”

So when Jesus talks about:

• Rock
• Sand
• Foundations

He’s not just talking about surviving storms…

He’s talking about what lasts when this life is over.

Because you can build something impressive here…

…and still have nothing that remains there.

1. THE FOUNDATION: Of Life and Eternity 

Matthew 7:24–27

Two builders.Two foundations.One storm.

And only one stands.

Not just in the storm…But through eternity.

Everyone is building.  

Both men were building.

And you are building right now.

Not just a life…But an eternal legacy.

You are building:

• A life here
• A future there

Everything you build in time…echoes into eternity.

The question is not:“Are you building?”

The question is:“Will what you’re building still stand when time is over?”

2. THE LAND — Not Everything that Looks Strong is Foundational 

Jesus is speaking to people who understood the land.

The Land was layered with:

• Limestone
• Sandstone
• Chalk
• Bedrock
• And unstable sand in the valleys

Some ground was solid.Some only appeared solid.

THE DANGEROUS ILLUSION

In the summer, the sun would bake the land…

Until even sand hardened on the surface.

It looked strong.It felt strong.It seemed dependable.

But when the rains came…

It softened.It shifted.It collapsed.

Not everything that looks strong in this life…is strong enough for eternity.

3. THE SAND — Temporary Things

Jesus calls it sand.

(ammos) — loose, shifting ground.

Sand represents:

• Temporary success
• Earthly accumulation
• Cultural approval
• Emotional faith

It’s easy to build on sand.

No digging required.No sacrifice required.No alignment required.

But what’s easy to build…is easy to lose.

4. THE ROCK — The Eternal Foundation 

Jesus calls it rock.

(petra) — massive, immovable bedrock.

1 Corinthians 10:4“…that Rock was Christ.”

The Rock is not temporary.The Rock is eternal.

Christ:

• Was before time
• Is in time
• Will reign after time

When you build on Him…

You are not just securing your life—you are securing your eternity.

5. THE STORM — The Testing

The rain descended.The floods came.The winds blew.

The storm came to both houses.

The difference was not the storm…

The difference was the foundation.

Jesus describes three forces:

• Rain (pressure from above)
• Floods (pressure from below)
• Winds (pressure from around)

And here’s the key:

The storm didn’t reveal the house—It revealed the foundation.

There is coming a day…

When everything will be tested.

Not by culture.Not by opinion.

But by eternity.

6. THE FALL — When Temporary Things Collapse.

“And great was its fall…”

Everything built on sand:

• Fails under pressure
• Collapses in testing
• Disappears in eternity

Because temporary thingscannot hold eternal weight

7. THE ROCK: Saves or Offends

Romans 9:33;1 Peter 2:8

Jesus is either:

• Your foundation
• Or your stumbling stone

You either stand on Him…Or you trip over Him.

PETER — The Revelation that becomes the foundation

Matthew 16:16–18

Petros — small stonePetra — massive rock

Jesus said:

“Upon this rock I will build My church…”

Not on emotion.Not on experience.

But on revelation.

Only revelation-based faith…

survives beyond the moment.

Are You built for eternity

Temporary faith says:“I’ll follow because something happened.”

Eternal faith says:“I have concluded who He is.”

That is the difference between:

• Sand faith
• Rock faith

What are you building for? 

One day…

Everything you’ve built will be tested.

And here’s the question:

Will what you’ve built… still be standing?

 1 Corinthians 3:12-15; 1 Corinthians 13:13

Gold, silver, and precious stones = obedient, sacrificial, and faithful work that lasts

Wood, hay, stubble = represent selfish, lazy, worldly efforts that are consumed by fire. 

Because:

• Money won’t stand
• Success won’t stand
• Reputation won’t stand

Only what’s built on Christ will remain.

Some have built:

• Careers on sand
• Relationships on sand
• Faith on sand

And it looks good right now…

But it hasn’t been tested yet.

And Jesus is saying:

“Don’t wait for the storm…Don’t wait for eternity…to discover what you built on.”

Today is a moment of decision.

Not just:“Do I believe?”

But:

“What am I building my life on?”

If you’ve been building on sand…

You can rebuild today.

If your faith has been emotional…

It can become foundational.

If you’ve been living for what fades…

You can live for what lasts.

“I will not build on what fades.

I will not trust what shifts.

Christ is my Rock—and I will build my life on Him.”
