So please, teach me as much as you possibly can. I do love gathering together as a church family, though, to sing praises to our God. Who is such a good Heavenly Father to us. And I do want you to know, as one of the teaching pastors here at Fellowship. That even though I don't get to be in here as often as I would like. We are so excited about what God's doing in this part of our church family. We are one church in multiple locations. Somos una sola iglesia en múltiples lugares.
And we love the people that God's drawing to Himself here through you. And for any of you who are relatively new with us this morning. We are so thankful that you're here. As we kick off a five week sermon series in the part of our mission statement that talks about where we make disciples. Because if you remember, that's what we said back on Vision Sunday we wanted to do this year. To pray the prayer that Jesus prayed with His disciples. Father, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
We want to see and experience more and more of God's kingdom here on the earth as it is in heaven. Which is why we've been preaching through our mission statement this year as a church family. Because we do what we do as a church because we believe that's what will change the world. That as we make disciples who live by God's grace and for his glory at home and across the world. That those disciples will live by the values of his kingdom. No matter what the cultural values around us are. And the more people on the earth that are doing that together. The more the earth will reflect the kingdom of heaven
that we're going to be. So we started off our year talking about what we mean when we say we want to make disciples. And then we preached through the book of Galatians if you remember talking about what we mean that we do that by God's grace. And then just before Easter we wrapped up this series about why we do what we do, which is all for God's glory. Which brings us to the part of our mission statement that we're kicking off today, and that is where we make disciples. Which is at home and across the world. And so first we're going to do a five week series just on what it means that we make disciples at home and in our home. And because we're going to talk about where God is asking us to make disciples here at home, we want to do something visually as a church where we can see all the places that God has our church family here at home. The street you live on isn't an accident. The neighborhood you live in isn't a mistake. God has strategically placed you here and called you there to make a difference for his kingdom where you live, work, and play. So that's why we have these two huge maps over here. And you can see one says at home, en casa. And the other one is of the entire world. And you guys are the only ones that have two maps, just so you know. I said you guys are the only ones that have both maps. Because what we want you to do is take a push pin, the tack up there, and put it where you live here in central Arkansas on the en casa map. And then also take another push pin and put it in the part of the world where you or your family are from originally. Our hope is it'll be a huge encouragement to us in this series.
To be able to see the places where God has spread out this part of our church family to be a picture of the kingdom of heaven. Now I think we have enough push pins for each person in here right now. So maybe just do it as a family would be great. And if we run out, we'll get more. You can do it next week as well. So that's what this five week series is all about. It's a chance for us to talk about making disciples at home and in our homes. But I know as I say that, right off the bat, that for all of our single men and women in here, or all of our couples who don't have children, or maybe empty nesters whose kids are grown and gone, or even grandparents, I know you'll be tempted to think that this series really isn't for me. Because we'll talk a good bit about what it means to make disciples in your home as a family. a ser discípulos en casa, en tu familia. But as we've talked about this series as teachers and planned this series out, pero cuando nosotros como pastores de enseñanza estábamos hablando sobre esta serie, we want you to know that we believe nothing could be further from the truth. This series really is for everyone. And there's two main reasons for that. Y hay dos razones principales para eso. First and foremost, this series is for everyone.
Because the physical family that God created and put on the earth is really a picture of the spiritual family that he's truly concerned about creating. The reason that God told Adam and Eve in the garden to be fruitful and multiply. La razón por la que Dios le dijo a Dan y a Eva que fueran fructíferos y que se multiplicaran was first to include us in his ministry of multiplying those made in his image. Who would grow up to worship and glorify him. But it was also to display to heaven and earth the kind of relationship he wants to have with us. An intimate, loving, sacrificial, parental relationship. Una relación amante, paternal, sacrificial. God calls himself our heavenly father over and over again in the scriptures. And so because the family is one of the pictures
that God talks about in his relationship with us. Anything that we talk about when it comes to our relationship with our kids in our homes. Teaches us something about our relationship with God. And not only that. Y no solamente eso. But our mission here at Fellowship Bible Church is to make disciples. And the same atmosphere we're gonna talk about today that makes up a healthy home in your discipleship. Are the same things that are healthy in any discipleship relationship. Which brings me to the second reason this series is for everyone in our church.
Because no matter who you are. Porque sin importar quién eres tú. And no matter what God has called you to be a picture of in this life. We all have a home. Todos tenemos una casa. If you're not married but have roommates. You have a home that will benefit from the things we're gonna talk about in this series. If you're married without kids. These five things we're gonna talk about are still the elements of a healthy gospel home. If all your kids are grown up and moved out of your house. Your adult children will still appreciate the things we're gonna talk about in their relationship with you.
And if you're a grandparent. These are the things that your grandkids will appreciate in their relationship with you. So although this series is about discipleship in the home, it's really for everyone. You can apply the things we're gonna say in this series to your D group here at fellowship. Whether it's of students in FN's Fellowship Student Ministry, or your own home, this series is for everyone. Let me pray and then we'll dive into it. Heavenly Father, we do love you. And we thank you for sending Jesus from heaven to earth. So that we could be in a relationship with you as our heavenly father. Jesus, we thank you for coming and promising us a home. Señor Jesus, te damos gracias por haber venido y por habernos preparado y hablado de un hogar that we get to go and be in when we come to see you face to face. You said, I go away to prepare a place for you. And in my father's house, there are many rooms. And so Lord, we thank you that this idea of home is a part of what you want in your relationship with us. So we beg you to help our homes reflect just a glimpse of that home.
And for our relationships to reflect the relationship you wanna have with us. We ask these things in the name of Jesus Christ. Oramos esto en el nombre de Jesús. Amen. Well, did you know that the earth's atmosphere is made up primarily of four main elements? There are some other elements in it to be sure. Hay otros elementos en la atmósfera, sí. But there are four elements that make up 99.9% of the earth's atmosphere. Nitrogen. Nitrogen. Oxygen. El oxígeno. Carbon dioxide. El dióxido de carbono. And argon. Y argon. And did you know that the percentages of those elements Sabías tú que el porcentaje de todos esos elementos got even just a little bit out of whack.
life as we know it would stop existing on this planet. Not enough oxygen. Si no hubiese suficiente oxígeno we couldn't breathe and we would all die. No podríamos respirar y nos moriríamos. Too much oxygen. Pero si hubiese demasiado oxígeno and a single spark would blow up the entire world. Not enough carbon dioxide. Si no hubiese suficiente dióxido de carbono we would freeze to death. Nos moriríamos de frío. Too much carbon dioxide. Pero si hubiese demasiado dióxido de carbono we would all die from the heat. También entonces nos moriríamos pero de calor. It's one of the amazing things about creation how fragile that percentage is and yet how God keeps it perfectly in line all the time. Because when these four elements exist in just the right balance. Porque cuando estos cuatro elementos
coexisten en el balance apropiado. There's just enough breathable air for everyone. Entonces hay suficiente aire para respirar and just enough heat. Y el suficiente grado de calor and just enough protein in our food. And on and on and on. Y así, y así, y así, y así. In the same way, what we want to do in this series for the next five weeks. Is talk about five key elements. Queremos hablar de cinco elementos clave. That when they're present, create an atmosphere in your home for discipleship. For the gospel to take root in your relationships where you live. Now I want to be clear, these five things won't guarantee your kids will behave from now on. They won't guarantee your roommate will stop borrowing your stuff without asking. They won't guarantee your grandkids will dye their hair back to their original God-given color.
But what they do, pero lo que sí nos hace ver, is they create an atmosphere that encourages life. Que estas cinco cosas nos ayudan a crear una atmósfera que anima, que nos anima, que nos lleva a la vida, and joy, al gozo, and spiritual growth, al crecimiento espiritual, and purpose. Because every home has a certain atmosphere when you walk into it, doesn't it? You can feel it the second you hit the door. It's either a fun house or it's a serious house. It's either a little chaotic or it's pretty rigid. It's either kind of easy going or it's a little harsh. You feel it when you walk in the door. And so, whether it's parents, kids, couples, or roommates, ya sea que sean los hijos o los compañeros que viven en la misma casa rentados, o que sean los nietos, these are the five elements that when present in your home can make the atmosphere feel healthy. So I've listed them there on your bulletin, on your outline, if you have it we'll put them up here on the screen. But they are regular relationship. Son lo siguiente, relación constante. That's what we'll talk about today. Biblical truth, aggressive forgiveness, intentional hospitality, and an external focus. And we're going to talk about these five things related to the rooms in our homes, like you
can see they're out to the side. So regular relationship we talk about is the living room. It's where we play games together, or sit and talk, or watch a show together, it's where we just spend time with each other. Biblical truth we'll talk about related to the study. Not that we all have a study in our homes, we know that. We always talk about the Bible around our kitchen table, but you get the picture. We'll talk about forgiveness as the closet in our homes. Because the closet's the place where we tend to stick all the stuff we don't want anyone to see, right? The stuff you're embarrassed about. Or you shove under the bed. And yet it's that aggressive forgiveness and grace in our homes that lets us take those things out and deal with them in a healthy way. We'll talk about intentional hospitality as the kitchen, or some of us maybe a playroom or the garage. This is where we invite the people in our neighborhoods to come and spend time around our table and break bread with us, or where our kids invite other kids to come play. Or we put the garage because that's where some of us have our hobbies, right? Like a bike that we may go ride, and it's a place where we can intentionally build relationship with other people around us. And then finally, the external focus, we talk about the driveway. Because a part of our discipleship in our homes is to spend time together going out into the community to serve and love others. So we'll talk about those five things over the next five weeks. And the first one that I want to briefly talk about today is that element of having real relationship in our homes, that living room aspect of it. Because the Bible talks about God as a very relational God and His relationship with us. And that He's created us for relationship with each other. Look at Deuteronomy chapter six, verses four through nine, with me this morning.
God says, hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one, and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. And then listen to this. You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way, when you lie down and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontless between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorpost of your house and on your gates. So one of the things we see in the scriptures here is an assumption that families spend time around each other on a regular basis. If you notice in this passage, there's not a command to spend time together. It's an assumption that in the homes of God's people, they're sitting together. They're walking places together. They're talking to their children at bedtime. And first thing in the morning. And they rise up, it says. Why? Because mothers and fathers are supposed to be a picture of God the Father and the Holy Spirit to us. And our God is a God of presence with his people. From the moment God put us on the earth, he spends time with us. And longs for us to want to spend time with him. Look at some other places in the scripture where it speaks to this. Genesis three, verses eight through 10 in the Garden of Eden. It says, and they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day.
And the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees in the garden. But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, where are you? And he said, I heard the sound of you in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked and I hid myself. So there's a lot we could talk about in that passage. But just notice from the beginning of time, God longed to walk and talk on his own. Walks and speaks with his creation. axis. Walks and speaks with his children. At the beginning of time, God longed to hear the speech of his creator and to be speaks with His creation. This passage in ini on page 9 doesn't comprehend the acting of that brother who believes Jesus, because He has chosen a faithful They were used to God's presence being with them in a physical way in the garden. Exodus 33, verses 11 through 15. Listen to what Moses says to God in this conversation. Says thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face as a man speaks to his friend. And when Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man would not depart from the tent.
Moses said to the Lord, see you say to me, bring up this people, but you've not let me know whom you will send with me. You said, I know you by name and you've also found favor in my sight. Now therefore, Moses said, if I've found favor in your sight, please show me now your ways that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people. And then listen to what he says. God says, my presence will go with you and I will give you rest. And then Moses said back to God, he said, if your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here. Exodus 33, verses 11 through 15. Además, has dicho, te he conocido por tu nombre y también has hallado gracia ante mis ojos.
So it's Adam and Eve. Entonces tenemos a Dan y a Eva. Moses. Ahora tenemos a Moisés. And listen to what King David says in Psalm 16, 11. You make known to me the path of life. In your presence, there is fullness of joy. En tu presencia hay. At your right hand are pleasures forevermore. God is a God of presence. And when His people are in a healthy relationship with Him, they long for His presence. They find joy in His presence. It's a good question for us to ask about our own homes. Would the people in our homes say they find joy in Your presence? That they love to be with You? Because of the relationship you have with them? God doesn't just give commands from on high and then stand away at a distance. He spends time with His people. He spends time with His children. And therefore that regular relationship is not only important in our relationship with God, but it's important in every discipleship relationship. Listen to what the Apostle Paul says about his discipleship relationships.
These are the kind of relationships he had with every church he planted, but listen to what he says to the Thessalonians in particular. First Thessalonians 2, 7-8 he says, but we were gentle among you like a nursing mother taking care of her own children. So being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God, right, the truth, but also our own selves, because you become very dear to us. Not only the gospel of God, but our own selves. Other translations say our very lives we shared with you. You can't have an atmosphere of true discipleship in any home without sharing your life together. And there's a number of reasons for that, but let me just close our time giving you a couple that have played out in my own life. First, following Jesus is caught as much as it is taught. It's just as much caught as it is taught. The people in your home are going to model what you do as much or more than what you tell them to do. Now modeling the truth goes hand in hand with teaching the truth, and we'll talk about the importance of teaching biblical truth. truth in your home next week, because if you never talk about why you do what you do but just hope they pick up on it, that can be problematic too. But in the same way, if you only teach the truth in limited moments to the people in your home, but you never spend time relationally with them, it will just be abstract ideas to them. They have to see in you what you're telling them is true about God. Secondly, the reason why you can't have true discipleship without spending time relationally together, is that people tend to care about what you know more when they know how much you care. Your kids or your disciples or your roommates or your spouse will tend to listen way more to you because of the choices they've seen you make in spending time with them. In fact, when Amy and I, my wife is here today, have asked our kids why they like spending time in our home or what their favorite memories are, the things they share aren't about gifts we've bought for them. They aren't about deep things we've taught them. But it's just the ways we've spent time together. It was building pillow forts
in the den. It was playing board games together. It was taking hikes or walks in beautiful places around Arkansas. Going to an art museum and then talking about what the paintings may have meant. It was about the time we spent together doing things. Real relationships are an essential part to any healthy home. Real relationships are an essential part of any healthy home. Without spending quality time together, your roommate will begin to feel like a rent check instead of a friend. Without spending time together, your kids will start to feel like dolls you dress up to show off but that don't really have a relationship with you. Without just spending time together hanging out doing fun things, your grandkids will struggle to want to hear all the wisdom you truly have to offer them. Because again, people tend to care what you know more when they know how much you care. Now as you're hearing me say this this morning, I'm well aware everyone's rhythm of life looks different. Some people work long hours, Monday through Saturday. Pilots are gone for a week, and then they're home for a week. Soldiers can get deployed for months at a time. So this is not about comparing your schedule specifically to someone else's schedule. That's why we're not giving hard and fast rules in a message like this, but principles to live by. How you spend time in relationship with your family or the people in your home will look different than other people around you. But here's what I want us to leave with this morning. When it comes to building real relationships with the people in your home, it's less about what you actually do together and more about the fact that they know you want to be with them. One of the foundational elements that creates a gospel atmosphere in your home
is spending time together in regular relationship. It's a reflection of God's desire to be with his people. So much so that he sent his one and only son, Jesus Christ, from heaven to the earth. To live among us. In fact, to lay his life down on the cross for us. So that he could make a way for us to spend time with him for all eternity. God is a relational God who wants to be with his people. The gospel is proof of that. And he's calling all of us in whatever home situation we're living in. To reflect that part of his heart to the people around us. So I want to encourage you this week to find an intentional way to spend time with the people in your home. Whether with your roommates, your spouse, your kids, or your grandkids. It can start small. But you just need to start. Let's pray. Hey, fellow, we come before you. Lord, we praise you for being a relational God. We praise you that you didn't just give us your word and then stand back and leave us alone. But you spoke and were present in personal ways throughout the Old Testament. Jesus, you came from heaven to earth to the world to spend time with us. To show us what all those words God said meant.
And then Holy Spirit, you came when Jesus left to indwell our hearts. To be with us every second of every day. To never leave us or forsake us. Para jamás irte o abandonarnos. Help us as imperfect as we are. To be a picture of that to the people you've put in our lives. We ask in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen. Amen.
