Buenos dias, iglesia. Good morning, church. El café. Qué bendición estar esta mañana con ustedes. What a blessing to be here this morning with you all. Y realmente que estoy muy emocionado de empezar esta serie en Isaías. And I'm also very excited to be starting this series in the book of Isaiah. Y ustedes verán por qué estoy emocionado de empezar Isaías. And you'll see why I'm so excited to start Isaiah. Porque cuando leemos estos libros de miles de años de antigüedad. And this morning our sermon title is The Manifestation of the Glory of God. And because we make disciples by the grace of God. And for his glory. The glory of God is like the ultimate motivation by which we do all things. Everything we do. Even the simplest chore that you have in your home. And even from that to things that are so special like going on a missionary trip. All of that should be done for the glory of God. But because of that we have to understand what does the glory of God mean. And the book of Isaiah is one of the best books there is to help us understand what the glory of God means. And so as elders we wanted to come up with a phrase that would make it easy to remember and define the glory of God. Pero la gloria de Dios es mucho mas grande que esta definicion. Where a person sees a glimpse of God's glory. Podemos verlo desde el Antiguo Testamento. We can see it from the Old Testament. Podemos ver a Abraham, podemos ver a Jacob. Or at a greater level we can see Moses who when his back is turned the glory of God passes by. We can see Ezekiel when he sees the glory of God departing from Israel because of their sin. Y en el Nuevo Testamento podemos ver que Jesús es la gloria exacta del Padre en la tierra. And in the New Testament we can see that Jesus is the exact glory of the Father displayed here on earth.

But we have to be sure that we are beholden by the glory that surpasses all other glory. No hay otra manera de vivir en este mundo. There's no other way to live in this world.

If we don't have our eyes set on the glory of God. ¿Quién era Isaias? Who was Isaiah? Era un profeta. He was a prophet. Que fue llamado para llevar el mensaje al reino dividido de Israel. Who was called to take the message to the. Divided kingdom of Israel. Especifically to the kingdom of the south that in Bible times was called the kingdom of Judah. And in that time, the kingdom had been divided into the kingdom of the south and the kingdom of the north. There were ten tribes in the north, two tribes in the south. But in summary, they used the name Israel for the ten tribes of the north and the name Judah for the two tribes of the south. And we know how the story ends. Even though God sent prophet after prophet, so that they would repent, they did not listen. And just as a good prophet would do, he would ask them that if they were not to repent of their sins, he would warn them that God would bring

judgment upon the nation. And just to clarify a little bit, Israel was a theocracy that was governed by God. And then behind that, God governed through the prophets and through the kings. And after that plan for Israel, there's no other nation that we could call a theocracy. There's no nation that we could say, this is a Christian nation. Este país no es una nación cristiana. This country. No es una nación cristiana. This country is not a Christian nation. Israel no es una nación cristiana. Israel is not a Christian nation. Y no confundir que Dios está aplicando esto a una nación hoy. And to not confuse that God is communicating this to a nation today. Is for the people of God.

Y al pueblo de Dios en el Nuevo Testamento. And the people of God in the New Testament. Se le llama el Israel espiritual. It's called the spiritual Israel. Si tienen preguntas, van con John. If you have questions about this, talk with me, the interpreter. Ahora, el norte iba a ser conquistado por Assyria. And so the north was going to be conquered by Assyria. Iba a ser llevado como esclavos, como cautivos a Assyria. And they were going to be taken as captives and slaves to Assyria. And they were never going to come back. And they were attacked and destroyed first. And the two tribes of the south, they had a few good kings. And so they lasted a little bit longer. Y al final fueron conquistados por Babilonia. But in the end, they were conquered by Babylon. But the south was going to return after 70 years of exile. So even though the book of Isaiah says that God is going to punish you for your rebellion, for your sin, but he also reminds them of the promises of God. 70 years later, you're going to return from captivity to the promised land. And all of these images of what happened to Israel become an image in the New Testament. Pero Dios dice no va a olvidar su pacto,

no va a olvidar su Israel. But God says he's not going to forget his covenant, he's not going to forget about Israel. Y aquí nos encontramos en nuestro primer punto. The final. night finds itself before the infinite. This is the only way in which we can respond. We respond with admiration. In admiration. Chapter six verse one says this, in the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of his robe filled the temple. Pay attention to the moment in which he receives the vision. When does he receive the vision? What had just happened? The death of King Uzziah. And this is so important. Because King Uzziah was one of the best kings over all the time of the divided kingdom. He began reigning as king when he was only sixteen years old. And it says that over the course of fifty-two years, the vast majority of his time he did what was right before the eyes of God, conformed to his father, just like his father. At the end of his days, this great king who had built a strong army, allows pride to enter into his heart. And when pride enters into the heart of a person, he begins to believe that he can do whatever he pleases. And King Uzziah takes fire, and he wants to take that fire and he thinks that he can offer that fire before the presence of God.

But only the high priests had the right to come before God and intercede for the people in the holy of holies. Even the king who was the most powerful one, God didn't give him all of that sovereign power. Each person has their own responsibility. He comes to the temple. The priests say, King Uzziah, no, you can't come here, you must leave. And it says that the king became angry. Because when there's pride, we don't want anybody to tell us something contrary to what it is we want. Because instead of humbling myself, I get angry. And it says in that moment, leprosy came upon his face. And that's where he changes his posture. And it says he spent the last years of his reign in exile. This great king who had brought so much stability to the nation, allowed pride to destroy his reign. You can imagine how the people felt when the source of their stability as a nation is taken away. Is that this has to happen in our lives. Is that God allows certain things in our lives that bring stability to be taken away from us. To reveal to us that sometimes our stability comes from things that are fragile. Things that are built upon the sand. And he does this. To give us that opportunity to lift our eyes and raise our eyes from looking at the things on the earth that have given us confidence. And to look upon Him who is seated on the throne. In the middle of the fear of a national punishment. In the midst of a situation where kings are rising and falling. God shows Himself seated on the throne, unmovable.

And it's right there that Isaiah sees so clearly the glory of God. And the only response we have is to put all of our focus and all of our mind. And this is what tends to happen when we see majestic things. Have any of you been to a place like this where we'll see a photo? That in the moment you're there, you just can't help but admire the majesty of creation. And in this last photo where we'll stay, we were walking, we were hiking when Gabe was only two years old. And this is the famous Grand Canyon. And so we were walking and Gabe was riding on my shoulders and we were getting closer and closer to a cliff where we would be able to see everything. And understand, he was only two years old in this moment. And when we arrived to that cliff, Gabe says, wow. It captured all of the attention of a two-year-old. And it's that no one, absolutely no one, could be exposed to such glory and end up saying, how great I am. No one would say that unless they had some sort of mental problem. The response to admiring such greatness is what follows in the text. We respond with admiration. When you put your focus, when you put your heart, it doesn't matter what is going on around you. You say, wow. And you respond as we'll see in these following verses. Above him stood the seraphim, each had six wings, with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one called to another and said, holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. The whole earth is full of his glory. These celestial beings are before the glory of God day and night. And I assure you that if those celestial beings were to show up before a group of human beings, the people would be tempted to worship those beings. And even those beings that are so glorious, they had no ability to resist the glory of

God. And with two wings they covered their faces. With two wings they flew. And with two wings they covered their feet. And there's a meaning behind the covering of the face and the feet. And when you see that God says, no one can see me and live, it's the idea that his glory is just too much. It's like when they tell you, don't look straight at the sun. And the feet have a tendency to mean, they stand for the path on which we walk. Nothing that is beneath the glory of God can be exposed to the glory of God. And what did they do? They sang to each other, holy, holy, holy. If it's difficult for you to sing, be reminded that he is worthy and he is glorious. You don't have to sing pretty like Honas or Dainé or Annette. You can maybe go off to a corner and sing. But we should be motivated to sing to our glorious God. And of all of the attributes of which they could sing, they say holy, holy, holy. And it's that the holiness of God is the first thing that helps us to see just how different we are from our glorious God. Because even though it might seem crazy, if he were to say strong, strong, strong, many of you could say, well, I'm a little bit strong. But before his holiness, every sin we have is brought to light. When you have this encounter with the glory of God, it brings us to respond in confession. Look at what verses four through seven say. And the foundations of the threshold shook with the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. And I said, woe is me, for I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips. For my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts. Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken

with tongs from the altar. And he touched my mouth and said, behold, this has touched your lips, your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for. Charles Spurgeon said this. God will never do with us until he has first of us undone us. He will never do anything with us until he has first undone us. When you're exposed to the holiness of God, when you're exposed to the glory of God through his word, and you don't see the necessity. to confess, you're not seeing the glory of God. He says, woe is me, for I am a man of unclean lips. He realizes his own sin, but he also realizes the sin within the people that he's around. And there's something important. There's something important in the order in which he sees these two things. Unfortunately today, in social media, what people say, woe to these people who are so sinful. But I haven't seen anyone say, woe to me, for I am sinful and prideful and angry. Woe to me, for there is so much sin in my life. No, our reaction is, woe to you who is so sinful and lost in your ways as a people. May we be a church who truly looks at our own sin. When you do that, sometimes you don't even have time to look outside. And it changes the way in which you see those who are outside. Because it's no longer, oh, I'm so good. And poor little them. No, it's, I'm the first. Paul said, I am the worst of sinners. When he had already written letters that are in the New Testament. And what happens after this confession from Isaiah? It says that an angel takes a, where's the word, a burning coal and touches it to his lips and he says, don't worry. And that touches on the theme of grace.

The glory of God without grace would destroy us. But the glory of God plus the grace of God, that's what allows us to enter into the presence of God and not be consumed. And it's at the root of that that he says, your sin has been forgiven. And there we see the promise that for those who repent and humble themselves that God takes their sin so far away from them as far as the east is from the west. And once we experience that transformation, we respond in submission. Obedience has to follow up repentance. If you have not seen the glory of God, if you have not seen the gravity of your sin, then your obedience is only going to produce legalism and pride in your life. Because you're going to begin to compare yourself with others. When your submission is seeing the glory and the holiness of God, here I am, Lord. I am nothing. I'm no one. But do what you want with me. Many times we don't obey the Lord, not because we don't know what we need to to do, but rather we have not beheld the glory of God. And verse 8 says, and I heard the voice of the Lord saying, whom shall I send and who will go for us? Then I said, then Isaiah said, here I am, send me. And when there's a conversation between them and the Lord speaks, some will say that it's a conversation between the Trinity. And some would say that the fact that they say holy, holy, holy also has to do with the Trinity. I think we see the reality of the triune God, three in one. Who shall we send? I think in this moment Isaiah understands what God is saying. And it's that the mission that Isaiah was going to have was going to be extremely difficult. He was going to go to a hard people. And it's that the mission that we have as a church is also difficult.

It's that the mission we have in Christian marriage is a difficult assignment. And the mission we have as parents in the church is difficult. But it's when we understand His glory that we understand the mission. While the worship team comes forward, I'd like for us to finish out meditating upon a few questions. Have you had an encounter with Jesus? An encounter that has brought you to repentance of sin? Have you experienced the touch of God in the sense that He's made you a new creature? Because you could be someone who understands on an intellectual level, but maybe you still need that touch of God on your heart. And if you'd like to talk more about that, you can come talk to one of us. Because if you are one who has experienced an encounter with God, through the gospel of Jesus Christ, that's in His Word, and you have repented of your sins, the Lord is calling you to obey Him. He's calling you to do His will. Look at what John Piper says. If you don't feel strong desires for the manifestation of the glory of God, it is not because you have drunk deeply and are satisfied. It is because you have nibbled so long at the table of the world, your soul is stuffed with small things, and there is no room for the great. Let us pray. Lord, we're before you. And we just want to say how great you are. Forgive us our sins. for those moments when we're more consumed with our own glory, with earthly glories. Forgive us our sins. Forgive us our sins. That we lose the great satisfaction of drinking from the eternal fountain, and as a church in the midst of the chaos, may we lift our eyes to the throne. Here we are.
