It's so good to have you here and also those who are watching online. And what an encouragement those of you that woke up even earlier than normal to be here today. And we'll continue in our series of the infinite worth of God. And that's the series that we'll be in for several weeks. But the theme of today is how the glory of God is our strength, how the revelation of the character of God brings strength to our lives. I wanted a movie that I love a lot. It's an Italian movie. I think it reveals this idea really well. This movie is called La Vita Bella. And it narrates the story of a father and his son during the time of the Second World War. And this Jewish father is taken to a concentration camp with his son. And the son is afraid, he's nervous, and he's asking his father what's going on and why are they taking us to this place. And so the father tells his son that everything that's going on, it's a game and that they're in control of the game. And he explains to him the rules of the game and how handling your hunger well gives you more points and how hiding at times can get you more points. And during those most difficult times that they had in that concentration camp, the son was always looking at the father to understand and know what it was he had to do. Because the father never seemed to be afraid. He never looked sad. He always gave the appearance to his son that he was in control of everything going on. And he would tell his son, don't worry, this game will be over soon and we're going to win. And so the last day comes, the day before the American troops will come to liberate the concentration camp. And he tells his son, hey, stay in this hiding place and tomorrow you'll win your prize. And I love the narration, the narrative of this story.

Because this father in this story appears to be everything that God truly is for us. We know the father in the movie didn't have control of the situation. We know he didn't have an idea of how the situation would end. But when we go to Isaiah chapter 40. We will see the image of a father that he is in control of everything. He has all of the wisdom necessary. He knows the end before the beginning. And that's where the strength for his children comes from. And in this first section, we'll see how this strength comes from trusting in his salvation. Remember that up until chapter 39, the prophecy had been that God is going to send a kingdom to conquer you because of your sin. And for the north, it will be the Assyrians. For the south, it will be the Babylonians. But up until chapter 39, what do you think the people have done? They have not listened. And it's climactic that the last section of chapter 39, it speaks to one of the greatest kings of Judah, King Hezekiah. And he asked him, why did you show all of our treasures to those who were sent from Babylon? And so the Babylonians had sent some messengers to King Hezekiah, and they had given him gifts. And King Hezekiah shows them all of the treasure that they have in the temple. And the prophet Isaiah says, what did you just do? And Isaiah says, let me remind you that Babylon is going to come and take away everything that you have. Do you know how the king responds? Well, at least it won't be during my reign. And you can see the indifference of the king towards the punishment of God. It makes a change in the prophecy of Isaiah, and he says, okay, now I see you're not going to listen. Let me at least tell you what the hope is that you have as the people of God.

And so beginning in chapter 40, he starts to tell them, when you're at your hardest moments while you're in exile and you're wondering if God will remember you, verses one through three say this, comfort my people, says your God, speak tenderly to Jerusalem and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the Lord's hand double for all her sins. A voice cries in the wilderness, prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. What is it that people most need to hear in times of affliction? Comfort. And that's why it says comfort, comfort my people. And he's saying that there's a determined amount of time that they would be in exile under Babylon. But this comfort speaks not only of a comfort they'll receive during their time of exile, but also for future generations after them. Speak to the heart of Jerusalem. And this prophecy is speaking to the leaders of Jerusalem, to the prophets of the time. Bring comfort to the people. And how? That the struggle has ended. That the sin has been paid for. And so in that time, the sin was going to be paid for by 70 years of punishment. Pero era una imagen al pecado que iba a ser pagado en la cruz del Calvario en nuestro lugar. But that was an image of how sins would be paid for on the cross of Calvary, and that Christ would die in our place. And that's why verse 3 is such a famous verse. In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. A voice that proclaims in the desert, that cries out in the desert. And it's that the idea of the desert church has to do with the idea of a walk, a path.

A path. And when we're in the desert, we experience thirst. We experience cold. We experience hot. We experience fear. We encounter danger. We're tired. We're tired. This is the image that Isaiah is presenting to us. If they're in Babylon, and the promise is that they would come back to Jerusalem, but over there they're slaves. They don't have anything. They have no resources. They have no strength. But prepare the way for the Lord. And it's this idea that the Lord is going to come and take them out of that place. Take them out of captivity. And I know that you can't, and you've tried many times. And I've desired, I've longed for freedom so many times. He says, prepare the way of the Lord. Look at what verses four and five say. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low. The uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken. What does this verse mean? That God is going to do the impossible so that his salvation can be brought about. It says that every valley will be raised up,

and every mountain will be laid low. And every rough place will become level. And every uneven place will become like a plain. He's saying that there's nothing impossible when it comes to God bringing to fruition his plan. And do you know how I know he's going to do that? Because you're seated here. You are that impossible. You are the impossible thing that God decided to bring to himself. And many times we believe that we're the ones that climb the mountain and cross the river and do the impossible in order to arrive to God. But God says, no, that's me that does that. Please prepare the way. Just be prepared. What do verses six through eight say? A voice says, cry, and I say, what shall I cry? All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows on it, surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. This prophecy is being made before they went into exile. And so surely the people were going to doubt whether or not God would come through with his promise. And he says, you have to cry out and say something to these people. And the prophet says, what do I have to say? That humanity is like a flower. That one day it's here, and the next it is gone. Why? It's that human strength, human pride, it's the barrier that prevents us from experiencing the glory of the divine king. Because God is in the business of taking the strong and making them weak.

Because only in that moment can we truly experience the strength of God. I think we don't say this enough. We don't remind ourselves enough that we are weak. We don't remind ourselves like the psalmist does that we are a vapor and one moment we're here and the next we're not. Because if we remembered that well enough, we would be in a posture of humility before the Lord every moment of our lives, telling him, I can't do it, but you can. My children are in your hands, Lord. My life is in your hands. My provision is in your hands. Because we are like grass. But the word of the Lord remains forever. He wanted to assure us that his word would never change. And so he continues encouraging him in verses 9 through 11. Go on, go on up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news. Lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news. Lift it up. Fear not. Say to the cities of Judah, behold your God. Behold the Lord God comes with might and his arm rules for him. Behold his reward is with him and his recompense before him. He will tend his flock like a shepherd. He will gather the lambs in his arms. He will carry them in his bosom and gently lead those that are with young. He's saying that you have to pronounce this message of salvation. Why do we celebrate every weekend that we are people who bring the good news to others? We announce the good news because the world is in slavery. Because people are without hope. Because we need to be reminded that there is salvation in God, and that the Lord will return in power, and His right hand will rule, and that there is a reward.

And He introduces a concept that sometimes we forget, that He is powerful. He is powerful to save. And so that's why this second section reminds us that this strength comes from trusting in His wisdom. Have you noticed that one of the strongest tendencies of human beings is that when things are difficult, we have ideas of how this had to happen. And we start to say, God wouldn't have let this happen. If God would have done things differently, I would be in a better spot. And we begin our dilemma or our argument with God. Yes, God, I know that you are wise, but if you would just listen to me, and the response to this is what the prophet says in verses 13 through 14. Who has measured the spirit of the Lord, or what man shows him his counsel? Whom did he consult, and who made him understand? Who taught him the path of justice, and taught him knowledge, and showed him the way of understanding? Who has taught God? Every one of us has tried. But His wisdom is without comparison. It's so easy to doubt the wisdom of God when things in life aren't going the way we wish they would. Will you say that? But God says, I am wise. My wisdom is without compare. The nations you see as powerful, because that was the problem they were having in that moment, they're nothing to me. The problems you have, they're nothing for me. And so why do we lose strength? And even worse, why do we go to places other than God to seek wisdom and strength? And that's why Isaiah says this in verses 18 through 20. To whom then will you liken God, or what likeness compare with Him? An idol a craftsman casts it, and a goldsmith overlays it with gold and casts for it silver

chains? He who is too impoverished for an offering chooses wood that will not rot. He seeks out a skillful craftsman to set up an idol that will not. The key question is, with whom will you compare God? If we're honest church, maybe we don't go around looking for someone to create a graven image for us. But there are things within our heart that are the things that we seek out to find satisfaction. And it says that that's not just here for those that have money. It says also that the impoverished seek out a way to find other gods. Can you in your life tell yourself, ah, if I only had that, I would have peace. If only I had this or that, I would have joy. You're doing what the people of Israel did, which is going to an image to seek the satisfaction that only God can give you. Money can't give us what only God can give us. Your spouse cannot give you what only God can give you. Comfort cannot give you what only God can give you. With whom will you compare with God? And that's why this strength comes from trusting in His power. And in verse 26, we'll see something that's normal in the Word of God, very common in the Word of God, where we're asked to lift up our eyes. And it's that when we're in difficult situations, it's like our head goes down, and the only thing we see is what's happening here. And that's the moment where we have to see beyond the circumstances. And verse 26 says this. Lift up your eyes on high and see. Who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of His might. And because He is strong in power, not one is missing. If you're weak, the natural thing for you to ask yourself is, what do I have to take

to gain strength? Some of you, maybe you drink those kind of dangerous drinks, Red Bull or something. And I have my reservations about those energy drinks. But nobody's going to say to me, hey, you're weak. Look over there at how strong that guy is, and you'll become strong. That's going to discourage me more. In our relationship with God, it works like that. It's like when you become undone from your human wisdom and strength, that's when the divine wisdom and this divine strength begin to bring about a transformation in your life. To the point where the paradox, paradoxically, Paul says, well, when I'm weak, that's when I'm strong. And so, when you want to be strong, look outside of yourself, because inside of you, there's nothing. But in God, there is everything. And he gives us an example. Who is it that makes the galaxies work in such a perfect way? Who makes them come out and go away in such a specific way? And here, we're asking ourselves, how are we going to pay the electric bill next month? And the resume, I was going to say curriculum, the resume of our God is he created the stars in the sky. Do you see the contrast here? And so, instead of us going to that source of infinite power, we continue on our own strength, in our own wisdom. And our nature is to do what the Israelites did in verse 27. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, my way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God? Why do you think that God has forgotten about your struggles? Why do you think you don't matter to him? He's saying, that's not true. To the contrary. Verse 28.

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might, he increases strength. Even youth shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted, but they who wait in the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings like eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint. So even though the temptation can be that our situation is so difficult, our situation is not difficult for God. There's no strength that we can follow, but it says that he gives strength to the tired. He renews our strength like the eagles. That helps me though. So we know that the eagles, it can take them some time to pluck their feathers and regrow them. And that renews the strength of the eagle. And it's at those difficult situations, those are opportunities to go under the hand of God where we can go and he can remove those things that are keeping us from becoming strong. So that we can soar like eagles over the storms. How are you going to know how much you depend upon God until God puts you in a situation of dependence. We have to put our trust in his power. Pastor, like, I don't think you understand. Maybe we're talking about situations that they're just going to resolve themselves. What about those problems, Pastor, that they're not going to be resolved in this life? What about that terminal illness? What about that fracture in our family that's just not going to be fixed? One day the judgments of God will be brought to fruition, and for those of us who are putting

our trust in him, we'll be like the northern lights, like a new morning, where everything that happened on this earth, that will be brought to an end when we're before the glory of God. And that's why our strength shouldn't depend upon every little thing being resolved here and now. And this takes us to our final point. Our strength comes from trusting that his judgments are firm. I'm so thankful that God's wisdom doesn't change based on what he feels one day to the next. He's not like us. It says in him, there is no shadow of change. And that's why he can tell us with confidence to not fear. And that's where we see chapter 41, verses 10 through 13. Fear not, for I am with you. Be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. I will help you. I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. Behold all who are incensed against you shall be put to shame and confounded. Those who strive against you shall be as nothing and shall perish. You shall seek those who contend with you, but you shall not find them. Those who war against you shall be as nothing at all. For I, the Lord your God, hold your right hand. It is I who say to you, fear not. I am the one who helps you. In chapter 41, we start to see a very interesting transition. These promises to his people, they begin to collide with promises about the Messiah. Because sometimes we can take this promise, as would happen back home in my city. And I would see the buses that have a route and take people to work. And they would have a biblical message on the back.

Everything that you do to me or against me, everything you desire against me, it will come back to you a hundred times more. A biblical message. Accept that. The transition begins to bring the. prophecy against the enemies of Jesus. Que si se manifiesta en perseguir a los cristianos. But that they'll come and they'll persecute believers. And so with this strength that God offers to us this morning. Quiero terminar haciéndote unas preguntas. I want to finish by asking you some questions. That in comparison with any earthly problem that that salvation you have from God resolves those problems and is so much greater.
