-♪♪ -♪♪ -♪♪ -♪♪ Going back to the land that God had promised him, and in verse 20 it says that he ends up making an altar called El Elohe Israel. El is not the article that we use in Spanish as the book. El is the name that was given to God on the land of Canaan. Israel was the name of Jacob that God had given to him. Jacob is saying something to you. God changed my life. Is there anyone here that can tell me that or not? Bro, God found me like a bastard, a big head, making decisions without consulting anyone, and it took him 22 years, but he did it. I'm not who I'd like to be, but he found me, and now, before I didn't even know that God, and now I call him God, the God of Jacob, God, the God of Israel. That's my new name. By the way, a parenthesis here. Isn't that what we confess when we're baptized? Because when you're baptized, some people have the idea that you're reaching, you see, when you're in the video games, that you reach the last level. The last video game I played in my life was Nintendo, okay? This was about 2,000 years ago, in the time of the apostles.
Nintendo, not Super Nintendo, not anything Nintendo, just plainly Nintendo. And the last level, you were fighting against Koopa, I think that's what he was called, against the bad guy, and we think that baptizing you is like you reach that last level. So it's like, bro, this guy already understood everything, this guy already has it clear, this woman can already explain everything to you from back to front, from front to back. But baptism in the Bible is simply that you say, hey, I don't know much. I only know that the Master met me and forgave me. I only know that God met me, I received his forgiveness, and now I'm a new guy. Can anyone tell me that's true or not? So I tell you something, by the way, it's like there's one person here who wants to applaud today, and the rest don't. I tell that person, either you don't applaud, or make sure someone else helps you. Good. This is a parenthesis here, but I wonder how many of you have already been found by Jesus, but you still haven't been baptized for some reason that I still can't understand. No, bro, I'm waiting. Waiting for what? And waiting until I really understand everything. Understanding that if you can say,
God is my God because he forgave me, I received Christ, that's it. I want you to say with me, that's it. You have it all, bro. He changed your life. Very good, let's continue. If you are in that moment, that you say, bro, I don't understand much, but God changed my life, I can, he praises Israel, it's like saying, in Hebrew it means God is the God of Israel. God is the God of Paul, God is the God of Mary, whatever your name is. God met me, God changed me. Maybe you say, that's my testimony, or I want that to be my testimony, pastor, but I still haven't reached that moment. It's like God is heating up the kitchen, but I still can't cook this meat. I don't know why. Something is missing, something is between me and that step. And this morning, I have come in the name of Jesus to tell you exactly what is that rival that is between you and that step. What is that enemy, that monster, that ghost that you haven't faced yet, or rather, you are facing it and you don't realize that you are facing it, and that Jacob had to overcome before ending up like this. I want you to end up like Jacob.
That is my job in this city, that you end up like Jacob, saying, God changed my life, but there is a rival that you have to overcome. And Jacob also had to do it. Do you want to know which one it is? I want you to say yes. Thank you very much for your sincerity. Let's investigate which was that enemy that Jacob had to overcome before having that beautiful testimony of God is the God of Israel. I want you to go a little further back, verse one of chapter 33. Look at how this last scene of the film in Jacob's narrative began. Verse one says, Then Jacob looked up and saw, who? Okay. If you have been with me, or if you know the biblical story, the heart starts beating at 100,000 kilometers per hour. Oh, bro, it's not yet, man. It's not. We were so good. God had already worked on my life. God had already done everything that I think he had to do. Why do I have to see this bastard hitor.com again? And I think he shoots himself. No, I think. The text says it, and there is a tremendous tension here. Because now it seems like the text is leading us to think,
okay, this is the last fight, right? This is the last fight in which Saul is coming and is going to solve things like the Hispanic men know how to solve things. To the punches, to the pinches, to the blows. The problem is that all of us, if you have been with me, if you put Saul fighting Jacob, who do you think wins? And Saul was the hunter. It's not that Jacob didn't have strength, but let's say that Jacob was much better with the tongue than with the fist. So we are here and we ask ourselves, hey, if Saul wins? I mean, if Saul comes here and he becomes a great Jackie Chan and he does a KO to Jacob, if Saul wins this fight, the whole story falls apart. What was the point? What was the point of God working on Jacob's life if in the end you find your brother who has a problem with you for 20 years and he annihilates you? So Jacob has to face the fear of people. And maybe you, because you know me, you say, ah, I know what you are going to say. The rival that is between me and taking that step of baptizing me or maybe taking that step of changing my path, is the fear of people. Maybe you tell me, Pastor, close the Bible and let's go, because I already know that you want to teach me that it is the fear that is going to stop me from taking that step of faith. Okay. Only for this preaching.
Maybe you are right. And I don't know if I would lie to you or if it was a bad preaching if I told you, yes, bro, it's the fear. The famous Kediran. I want you to tell me, Kediran. I feel like Kediran is almost a word. The Kediran. And the Kediran has left many in the race, a lot of people who, I already heard the voice of God, a long time ago I heard that God was calling me, a long time ago I heard that Jesus was calling me, but the fear of, say it, the Kediran, is the one that leaves me standing here. And I see Esau and everything freezes and I don't know if I have to take this step, I think I'm going to wait a little bit. I prefer peace. So, maybe that is what is stopping you. And maybe that is my preaching. I'm not going to fix it. I'm not going to tell you, calm down, everything will be alright. Everything will be alright, as the song says. I'm not going to fix it. The only thing I'm going to tell you is this. If Jesus of Nazareth is calling you, sooner or later you are going to have to face your fear to what others can say or do to you. I can't give you a pass, a voucher, to avoid this. You have to face this monster face to face. There is no way you can find a way to jump to this level.
You are going to have to face it. A few years ago I was talking to a friend, a guy I've known for years, and I became friends with him. And when I became friends with him, what always happens is that I tell him what Jesus did in my life. Sooner or later. And when I told him, you know, I grew up in a Christian church, but it was until God met me. I had an experience with him that he saved me. And he listened to me, you know, like with thirst. You know, when someone listens to you like, I want that, bro, I want that. And he told me, he said, I also want that encounter with God. I said, really? Yes. Great, let's pray. Let's pray together. He said, we'll see each other next week. We're going to study the Bible together. And the next week came, and the only thing that came was the week that followed. The guy never came to me. I said, okay. I'm used to it. I'm a pastor. We're used to being left planted like a potato plant. So I said, I'll give you the next week. The next week he comes. Sorry, he came the next week and he never came. So after two or three weeks, I wrote to him. Hey, Dad, what happened? And he told me something, listen to me carefully. He said, I like what you're telling me, but I'm not ready to take the step. And I got a little upset. I said, why aren't you ready to take the step?
And he said, because I believe what you're telling me, but it's not what my dad believes. And I said, okay. And then I don't understand. He said, no, it's just that the Bible, he started to get mad at me. It happens. I don't know why people get mad at me. He said, but the Bible says I have to honor my dad. And I said, but if you're not going to take the step for what your dad thinks, you're not honoring your dad. You're afraid of your dad. Fear. Fear of men. Fear of what they can do to you.
Vamos a rewind a esa película.
Okay, so a ver si podemos puzzle this together. Decía la canción, it's not about the money, pero Jacob dice, yeah, it's about the money.
I can't believe that I stole this, I can't believe that I spoke to him like that, I can't believe it. And there is a competition between two images, one that gives you freedom and one that brings you guilt. Maybe that's what I came to preach to you today. Maybe it's an image of yourself sinning that is not allowing you to take that step to be baptized or to take that new path that you've been listening to for a long time that you should take. Maybe that's my message. Guilt. Guilt. I'm not going to fix it for you. All I can tell you is that there is a point in which you, as a Lord of Jesus, have to choose between listening to the voice of Jesus that tells you, Forgiven, or listening and embracing the voice of your head that tells you, Guilty. There is a moment in your life in which you have to decide if you are going to embrace the voice of the Master or if you are going to embrace your own voice and stay in the corner of guilt and shame. And Jacob had to face that. And maybe that was the enemy he had to face to have that testimony. But, I want you to go with me, but, nope, it's not shame either. I tell you why? Because you keep reading. And Esau, I don't have the text up there, but Esau says, My Lord, I have more than enough, Esau said. Keep what you have for yourself. It's like if Esau is saying, It doesn't matter what happened, get up. Take these sheep, take everything. I don't need anyone to be inclined.
I've already forgotten. Erase my new account. That's it. So, it seems like the biggest enemy that Jacob has is shame and guilt, but Esau doesn't insist on guilt. It's like Esau says, I don't care. So, if it's not the main enemy, the fear of the people that was stopping Jacob, if his main rival, of taking the step of faith, wasn't guilt, then, what was it? Are you ready to solve this mystery or not? Look at what verse 12 says. Good, Esau said. Let's go, I will go before you. Like, let's go, I will go before you. I will go before you, where or what? Where are we going to go? Ah, I'll tell you a little bit. Esau lived in a land called Seir. Now I'm going to show you a map in a moment. And Esau says, come with me. Come with me. Forget about the past. I'm not going to insist. I'm not going to touch the blade of guilt. You don't have to be afraid of me. Just come with me to where I live. And that's it. Come and stay with me.
They were in the central place that I put you there as a pillow. And I want you to put on Jacob's sandals for a moment. I still have you with me, yes or no? Jacob just had an experience with God in that central place that says Peniel. And he had a call. The call was to go to the land of his parents, which was Canaan, which you see up there, to the north, with the blue arrow. And yet now his brother comes and says, you don't have to go there. Come with me. It's the most comfortable option. I want you to tell me, comfortable option. Put on Jacob's sandals for a moment. Yes, yes, I'm coming. Why not? I'm going. I know that God told me to go up, but everything is fine. I'm not afraid. I have no guilt. You don't have to end up with problems either. I'm going with my brother to Zeir and that's it. And he's offering to guide me, to be my escort. Without knowing it, the worst enemy for Jacob, listen to me carefully, the worst enemy for Jacob was to take the most comfortable option for him and sell the call that God had given him in his life. Jacob was presented with the option to continue having his relationship with God, but in a diluted way, watered down, in which he did not have, he is offered,
yes, stay with God, stay with what God taught you, but don't be a fanatic either. Don't be a freak. You can have a relationship with God and continue with your life. Jacob was offered the saddest way to follow God, which is this, to follow God in your own way and to try to follow God. to avoid complications. Stay with the easiest option, avoid complications, and think you can have the best of both worlds. To have God on one hand, and on the other hand, not having problems with anyone. To go on. Damn invitation to go on. It's the same one you've been listening to. I want to follow Christ, but I don't want to pay the price. And sadly, now it seems that for us, a few years later, the idea of paying the price bothers us. I remember that a few years ago, also knowing a family, we started talking to them, and the idea was to serve, like 11 years ago, before starting this. And I remember talking to them, and I told them, yes, because following Christ and doing these things to reach more people for Christ is a sacrifice. And they said to me, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
It's a privilege. And I told them that I'm also a bit of a pain in the ass. Yes, yes, it's a privilege, but it's a sacrifice. There's a price to pay. I want to stay comfortable in my house. I want to not do this. I want to continue with my life. It's a sacrifice. No, no, no, no. It seemed like I was saying something rude, bro. No, no, no, no, no, no. Sacrifice, no. It's an honor. Bro, that makes me angry, bro. Why does Jesus himself say, the one who... Are you with me this morning or not? I'm getting angry, but this works. The Lord is with me, okay? It's not a carnal anger, it's an eye of the Holy Spirit. Jesus himself, when he calls people to follow him, says that the one who doesn't want to carry his own cross and follow him is not worthy of following him. Do you know what it means to carry the cross? Do you think that carrying the cross means putting on that crucifix and embracing it? By the way, I'm worth three lemons if you want to have the crucifix. Tattoo it. Carrying the cross is your death sentence.
Jesus was saying, if you're not willing to sign your funeral, don't try to follow me. And yet, 2,000 years later, we're here trying to be nice, saying, no, no, no, let's not say it's a sacrifice. And I'm going to tell you in the name of Jesus. Yes, it's free. You can't buy salvation, but it's going to take everything from you. And if you're not willing to sacrifice whatever you have to sacrifice, don't waste your time with the Messiah. That's the call of God. And that's why this diluted offer to follow is the one that's stopping you from changing your mind. A long time ago, you knew what God was telling you. A long time ago. However, you still want to stay with that version that you invented. You invented it a long time ago. And in your mind now, you're good. You're very good at getting Jesus your way. That's not the call of Christ. And I'm never going to dilute it for you there. The most difficult call is the real call of Christ.
It's not staying with God and keep doing my life. It's all the way or no way. You'll ask yourself, what did Jacob do? What did Jacob do? He's offering himself to deviate. And verse 14 says, Please, my Lord, go first. We will go after you more slowly, at a rhythm that is comfortable for the animals and for the children. We will meet where? What does it say there? Where will we meet? Oh, and I get to that place. And you say, no, Jacob, no! So many years with God, trying with your heart, hard as a stone, for the moment to come. And you just draw back. When things get difficult, you preferred comfort, you preferred your way of living more than the way God had called you. And you say, Jacob, don't sell your call, Jacob. Yes, you want to be at peace with Esau, but no Esau is worth it
if he makes you abandon the call of God. There is no one person who is worth more than the call of God for your life, not one. And Jesus himself said it. If any of you prefer, if any of you prefer your wife more, your husband, your children. If any of you prefer yourself more than me, you are not worthy of me. The calling of Jesus of Nazareth is that you raise your head and say, Esau, I feel that I cannot live your plan for my life, but I have another plan for my life, of the God of Israel. Can anyone say amen to that or not? So, it seems that Jacob is going down the easiest path. And yet, look how this ends, verse 16. So, Esau turned around and said, OK, see you in Zeir. And he embarked on the way back to Zeir that same day. Look at what verse 17 says. Are you ready for the end or not? Verse 17 says, Jacob, on the other hand, what? He traveled to Sukkot, and then below it says, Jacob arrived safe and sound to the city of Zichem, in the land of Canaan, and there he built an altar and named it El Elohe Israel. What did Jacob do? I don't know, bro. And what? Did you lie to your brother? What do I care, bro? At least he made a good decision. Maybe he was being nice with his brother, or maybe he let himself go. But that night he said, no, bro, I'm not going back.
I can't go back. I know what God called me to do. I know what God called me to do, and I know the person that God called me to be, and I know the decisions that God called me to make. I'm not going back. But that offers me more comfort. But comfort is not my calling. My calling is what God has told me. And if God has told me, this is the kind of life that I have for you, this is the kind of life that I'm going to live. Who does it bother? And if Esau doesn't like it, and if Esau publishes and doesn't stop inviting you to parties, and if Esau calls you the Hallelujah and the little brother, I'm sorry, bro. I love you. I love you. I love you. I will never stop loving you. But I don't sell my mission for what you think of me. I can't. I have a call from the Master for my life. So I ask myself this morning if maybe the enemy was the one that Jacob had to defeat. That insatiable desire to always do things in his own way and avoid the problem. Always wanting to stay with God and at the same time always wanting to be good to people. That is the worst rival you have this morning. And I prayed for you this morning, little brother. I prayed for you. So that right now in your mind and in your heart you know what that comfort is
for which I am selling my call. Why does it seem that I can't give up? That God calls me and I don't do it? And that is the reason. Because in your mind you have created a watered down version of what it means to follow Christ. And you thought that following Christ would avoid problems with family or people. No. I hope God restores your marriage. I hope God restores you with your brothers. I hope God restores you with all the Esau's. But that is not the end. That is not the mission. The mission is to follow what God has told me to do. Whatever it takes. Can someone say Amen? And I invite you to something. So Pastor, what do I have to do? What do I have to do? A mí me gusta have it my own way. A mí me gusta tener mi propia vida.
It's a real encounter with the person of Jesus, in which Jesus, I believe, and it has been my experience, speaks to me directly and from the bottom. And the struggles that I thought I could never win, sometimes at the moment of eating bread and drinking wine, just by listening to his voice and just by remembering that he died for me, are dissipated. Jesus is stronger than the enemy who tried to stop Jacob. Jesus is stronger than the enemy of comfort, who is trying to stop you from making the decision you have to make. And that's why I encourage you now, if you haven't done it yet, if you have received Christ in your life as your personal Savior, to drink your cup, to open it, if you haven't done it yet. In a moment we are going to sing, but I want you to drink the bread and the wine. And before we sing, I want us to be still for 30 seconds. And listen, just in silence, listen to how Jesus wants to speak to your life today. How he wants to destroy the enemy of that damn comfort that is always leaving you to take the decision to receive Christ, to be baptized, or to change that mental shape that you have. I'm going to leave you and Jesus alone. Close your eyes and just listen. Speak, Master, of your body and your blood. Speak to them, Master, tell them what you want to say. Don't make it harder. Don't make it harder. Bro, the form of disciple that you have created in your mind is not what I taught.
You've watered me down. Yet I love you. I love your life. Eat with me. Participate of me, my body and my blood. Feed yourself of something different. There are so many voices in your mind. Feed yourself of me. Feed yourself of me, my words and my voice. My body and my blood are for you. They are yours. He gave his body for you and for me. And to eat of this bread is your yes to the voice of Jesus. Eat with me. This is my body that I give to you. And now I want you to drink the cup that represents the blood that the Messiah spilled. and eat with Him, and nourish yourself with the true drink that is His blood for you. Stay with the cup, in a moment you will throw it away, at the exit. I don't want to ruin this moment of Jesus with you, with us, with me, with me. I want you to close your eyes where you are, up and down, and that from your heart you have heard of fears, of guilt, and of comfort. Right now Jesus, in communion with you, in relationship with you, and eating true food and drinking true drink, Jesus now with His power is defeating that enemy. Do you feel it? He is defeating the enemy of the comfort of his people, here and now. And you don't have to fight for that. Just receive Him, receive that love, receive the sacrifice that God Himself made for you. That is His body, that is His blood. Respond to Him with a yes, Lord, I understand.
I understand, Lord, yes. I'm going to take that step, yes. And I want to finish praying for you in that spirit. We're going to finish praying, and then Pastor Marco is going to finish greeting us at the end. I invite you, if you're here or you're looking at the screens, that you put your hands like this, if you can do it. Look at me, look at how I have my hands. Up and down, wherever you are. In a receiving position. In a giving position. In a position where I stop resisting the love of Jesus. And I want to pray for your life, I want to minister to you, Abba, in the name of Jesus. Thank you, because the presence of Jesus is real here and now between us. And I want to thank you, Abba, because Jesus on the cross and in the resurrection fought the battle that I could never have won, which is the battle against that softened version of what it means to follow you. A version that is leaving so many people on the side of the road without making the decisions they have to make. And thank you because I know that Jesus, with his body and blood, won. And he, with his power and his Spirit, in this place, and even those who are watching from their homes or from prison, are receiving the truth through the Holy Spirit. Yes, yes, it is worth it. Don't sell your calling so cheaply, dear. Don't sell your calling so cheaply, my friend. Don't sell it. I didn't call you to leave. I didn't call you to the most peaceful version you can imagine of your life. I called you to my land. And I called you to follow me, whatever the consequences.
That is the Gospel. Receive it. Receive it. Abba, thank you for what you are doing in this house. And thank you for what this is going to mean in the lives of many people. You are the one who does this work in people, not me. And that is why I give it to you. Holy Spirit, we love you. In the name of Jesus of Nazareth. And we all say, Amen and Amen. God bless you, Father. Wow. Powerful is the word of God, isn't it? If God, if Jesus of Nazareth spoke to you today, and you received him as your Lord and Savior, next Sunday we will have baptisms. Please do not leave before you have spoken with any of our leaders. Don't leave before you talk to us. If you are here for the first time, we have a gift for you. Amen. Don't go just yet. Go to Next Steps. We can help you there. You will receive a gift. If you have more questions about how to take your next step, we can help you there. If you are interested in getting baptized this Sunday, you can go to the app. You can register there or at Next Steps. I also want to remind you that this Friday at 4 and 6, we have the services of the Holy Friday.
You can't miss it. We are waiting for you. May God bless you, dear church. Go in the peace of God. Dear friend, thank you for joining us in our worship service. If you have received Christ in your heart as your personal Savior, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to write us to the phone number you will see on the screen. Without further ado, I would love to see you again next Sunday in our worship service. God bless you.
