There's Still Room

Are you hungry for the Word today? I woke up this morning very early and I felt so excited to get the opportunity to open the Bible with you guys. I think it's probably been over a year since I've done this. I've recently, recently, what six months ago, had our fourth child and I'm a little busy so I haven't been able to do this in a while and it is such an honor. It is such an honor to be in this room with you and we're gonna dive in today and continue our sermon collection which is called The Kingdom is Light. How many of you have been enjoying this sermon collection? It has truly, truly been such a lighthouse collection for me. I've learned so much but I've also recognized so many, so many of these parables are really foundational ideas. I can't wait to make my kids watch back all of these sermons so that they can learn what the kingdom of God is like. We're gonna be in Luke 14 today so you can turn there with me or you can look on the screen. I don't pretend to believe that every single person in this room is familiar with church. Maybe you're here for the first time or the first time in a long time. Your mom invited you to church and you said yes because you love her so much. If that's you today, if you're in church for the first time or the first time in a long time, we just want to say welcome. We're so glad that you're here. We're so glad that you chose to be in the room today but I want to declare to you that it's not an accident and it's not just because your mother invited you here or a friend invited you here. The Holy Spirit himself has invited you into this place and we're gonna talk about the kingdom of God today and the reality that the kingdom of God is at hand. Meaning the kingdom of God is here and the kingdom of God is now and there's some really amazing benefits as we step into a kingdom life and so I just want us to have our ears open and our eyes open to what God is gonna speak to us today through this parable. So if you're in Luke 14, we're gonna start in verse 15. You can stand for the reading of the word. Lyle wanted to choose the longer passage because he thought it might be a better articulation but I did convince him to go with the shorter one because we have to stand so long during the reading of the word so you're welcome. We chose the shorter version. I get to preach the first two services

today and he's preaching the third and the fourth so also you're welcome. I'm so glad that I get to be here with you guys today. You came to the right services. Also you know that we have an 8 a.m. and a 12 p.m. if you want more room and services. You can also come to those services as well but we're gonna jump in and we're gonna read together. You can read out loud or you can read in your heart. Either way is fine with me. When one of those who reclined at the table with him heard these things he said to him, blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God. But he Jesus said to him, a man once gave a great banquet and invited many and at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, come for everything is now ready but they all alike began to make excuses. The first said to him, I bought a field and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused. And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen and I go to examine them. Please have me excused. And yet another said, I've married a wife and therefore I cannot come. So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and he said to his servant, go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city and bring in the poor and the crippled and the blind and the lame. And the servant said, sir, what you've commanded has been done and still there is room. And the master said to the servant, go out to the highways and the hedges and compel people to come in that my house may be filled. For I tell you none of those men who were invited shall taste my banquet. How many of you know that the man hosting the banquet is God himself? The banquet is the kingdom and many all are invited because God has a passion in his heart for people and not just the people that you think should get into the great banquet hall. He has a passion for for everybody to experience the kingdom. And today, I am so overcome with the reality that there is still room in the house. He's invited everyone, but there is still room. Maybe you've counted yourself out today,

but there's still room for you in the kingdom. Maybe you've said yes to Jesus, but you haven't been living life in the kingdom of God under his lordship. And today, I wanna say that there is still room. And that's the title of the message today, because I want it to be burned into your heart that there is nobody who is outside of the invitation of God into the kingdom of God. Are you grateful for that? Let's pray this morning. Jesus, I thank you for the kingdom. I thank you so much that the door through Christ Jesus is still wide open. God, I pray that we would be a community, a church of kingdom people. God, that we would live our lives as kingdom citizens, not just citizens of this world, but citizens of another kingdom. And God, I pray that you would quicken our ears and quicken our hearts to the understanding of the kingdom of God. Give us wisdom and understanding today as we dig into your word. And in Jesus' name, we pray. And everybody said amen. Amen, amen. High five your neighbors, say there's still room. Come on, there's still room. I love it.

This passage of scripture was fun. Lyle and I got the chance to prep our messages together this week, which very rarely happens. And we were just going over line by line, verse by verse, this story. And there's something that this story powerfully teaches us about God, and it is this. God loves a full house. God wants a full house. When God throws a party, which is where we're all headed in heaven, God wants a full house, amen? A full house makes for a memorable party. Listen, I didn't go to a lot of house parties because I was a good girl, okay? I told the first service that I smoked American Spirits in college, and they all got really silent, and I said, oh, that was too real. But that was like my teenage rebellion, okay? I didn't go to house parties, but I heard a rumor that the house party was good if the house party was full, because everybody wants to be a part of a memorable party, and that includes a full house. An empty house also has a memorable feeling too, but it's that icky feeling where you're like, I cannot leave fast enough. This is the reason why Lyle doesn't like birthday parties. Lyle doesn't like birthday parties. I actually, I realized today, I have not had a birthday party since I was 16,

because I'm more of like a travel for your birthday kind of girl. Anybody else? I'm like, I wanna leave town. I wanna go somewhere fancy and sleep, and that's usually what I wanna do for my birthday. So I haven't had a party since I was 16, but when Lyle and I were first married, within our first year of marriage, well, after our first year of marriage, we had bought a home, and Lyle was turning 30, and I thought, I'm going to throw him an absolutely epic birthday party, okay? Great idea. This birthday party took him 10 years to recover from emotionally. I convinced him for his 40th. I was like, we're gonna do a birthday party, and it was amazing. The house was full, and there was a lot of cake, and it was great. So it took him 10 years to recover from this party, okay? Because at his 30th birthday, we had just moved into our house. I had a six-month-old baby, and we had no furniture in the home, okay, none. So my husband is born at the first of September, which means that on occasion, his birthday falls on Labor Day weekend. And this particular year,

his birthday fell on exactly Labor Day. So every invitation we sent out to come to the birthday party, everyone had other plans. So they said something like, I'll just pop by. I'm just gonna pop by. And nobody wants to feel like you're getting popped by on your birthday. What? So we invited all these people. It's Labor Day weekend. He wants steaks, but we're not very good at the time at being planner-aheaders. Again, we had just bought a house, we were poor, and we had a newborn. So he's like, I want steak for my birthday. We go to the store, it's Labor Day weekend. There are no steaks, you know. So he has salmon for his birthday. Devastating, it wasn't even cooked properly. It was a whole mess. Yes, we rented decorations for the party. They gave away all his decorations to the people who had parties and not just birthday parties. So we had plastic folding tables, a set of string lights in my living room, and people who were popping by. Tell me that is not the most traumatic birthday you have ever heard about. Nobody brought a present.

One person brought a present. I'm grateful for that person. But needless to say, we did not have a full house for the entirety of the party, and the experience was so traumatizing, it took me 10 years to convince him to do another party. And that is because nobody wants to invite a bunch of people to a party and nobody show up. But that's what happens to God in this story. God sends his best. He sends his son, and he sends his servants, which are us now in the New Testament. As a New Testament church. But nobody responds to the initial invitation. In Luke 14, it says he tells the servants to go out quickly to the streets, to the lanes of the city, go out to the highways, hedges, compel people to come in. In other words, go as far as you can with all of the effort that you have and bring people into the kingdom. Bring people into my house, and that's because God wants a full house. He wants a full house. God wants everybody at the party. God wants everyone in the kingdom, and God wants everybody to be saved. If you don't believe me, look at 1 Timothy. He says, God, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth?

The kingdom is not exclusive. It's for everybody. It's for everybody who will accept the invitation. Listen, I'm so glad that God doesn't respond to rejection the way that we do. I'm so glad, I pondered this week the amount of heartbreak that Jesus must feel knowing that he went to the cross and opened the door to the kingdom, bled himself dry, and still watches people choose other things over the kingdom. But I'm so grateful that God doesn't live rejected. He just sends out more invitations. And that's, oh, I was overcome. I'm doing my mascara this morning. I'm like, why, generations on generations, are you still building humanity? Why haven't you come back for us yet? And I had this thought in my heart, he's still sending out invitations. Because we are those invitations, the servants that he sends out to the highways and the hedges. And I was so grateful that he didn't stop before I got to show up and be a part of the grand story of God and be the invitation. You know, I know it's so common for us in our culture to experience FOMO, the fear of missing out, the fear of not being invited, the fear of not being included,

the fear of knowing that other people are invited but not you. But I wanna declare to you, the kingdom is not that. The kingdom is not a FOMO kingdom. The kingdom is a wide open kingdom. And there is still room for you. There is still room for your life in the kingdom of God. And I'm so grateful because honestly, I'm not a FOMO person, I am a JOMO person. I have the joy of missing out. You cancel a plan on me, I am not sad. The only plan that can get canceled that will make me sad is a trip to Disney World. But aside from that, I'll find something else to do by myself and I will love it. But that's not God. God is the God who wants everyone included and everyone invited and everyone to be a part. And that is why he sent his son. And in John 3, 16, he says this, for God so loved the world that he sent his son, that whoever believes in him will have eternal life because that was God's solution to the disconnect between humanity and his presence. So he sent his son and he said, here's the door. Here's the door, it's Jesus. It's Jesus and when you say yes to the invitation of Jesus, you have access to the kingdom of God. We make a lot of excuses though. I know that I do.

Story, you're seeing Jesus sitting around a table, dining with the Pharisees. And he's actually personifying what he's preaching, which is, I will go to anyone, anywhere, at any time, to be the doorway. Meaning, he is perfectly available for you. If you're not walking through the door, it's not because of his effort, it's because of your resistance. All you have to do is say yes to the invitation. But as humans, we are so good at making excuses. I've made a lot of excuses, I'm gonna be honest. And we see five main excuses in this story, and I can see myself in all five of them. I wanna encourage you, if the word of God is being preached and you can't see yourself as the Pharisee, you probably are one. We have to do our best to say, God, where am I resistant to your way, the kingdom way? And I know I've been there, I'm probably there right now in some ways. But the reality is, the doorway is open, and as he invites people in, the house is only filled if the invitation is responded to. So we have to respond to the invitation, but what are the things that hold us back from those invitations? I'll say, in this story, the first two excuses must have come from Southerners, because they were so polite.

It's like me rejecting a birthday party invitation for one of my many children. I'm like, I am so sorry, I am so grateful to have this invitation, but I cannot be there this Saturday. I was also invited to four other birthday parties. But that's what it's like. Even doing things politely, rejecting the invitation, is still rejection of the invitation. And when you reject the invitation, you don't get to live the kingdom life. And the first excuse is this, it's material possessions. Luke 14, 18 says, the first person said to him, I bought a field and I must go out and see it. Please have me excused. And this would be kind of related to maybe making a big purchase in your life, like buying a house or taking on a new hobby or adventure that costs you money and you're preoccupied by what you've invested your money into, your possessions. Some people can't see the kingdom because they're preoccupied by the property or the opportunity that they want and don't have yet. I've been there before. It's not just physical houses, it's opportunities. That's what I was praying about this today. What other possessions, what other things like this distract us? And I heard the Lord say it's opportunity.

It's opportunities that distract us from living in the kingdom. I've done this before where I'm like, hey, I'm just going after this one really amazing thing. I'll come back to my prayer closet later. I need to spend this time organizing my Pinterest board or communicating with my friend on this opportunity or this acquisition. And the reality is it's not just rejection. It's being preoccupied that's so dangerous. Sometimes we can't just outrightly say, no, I don't want that. It's just being distracted by the wrong thing. Our attention focused on something aside from the kingdom and that was this person's excuse. In 1 John, we see this. Do not love the world or the things in this world. If anybody loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. That is strong language. For all that is in the world, the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life is not from the Father, but it is from this world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever. And that's because the kingdom doesn't have an expiration date. So if you build your life on the kingdom of God, it will not be taken away from you.

But if you build your life and all of your focus and attention on things that die with this world, then your life is built on shaky ground. God loves you so much. He wants your life to be built rightly and he wants your life and your love to be ordered rightly so that you can withstand the wind and the storms of life because it will come. Some of you are in the middle of a storm and you're recognizing I'm being built on the wrong foundation. And I wanna encourage you today, you can get your feet on the foundation of the kingdom. You just have to say yes to the invitation. The second excuse was this, economic gain. Luke 14, 19, another said, I bought five yoke of oxen and I go to examine them. Please have me excused. This man is not focused on the eternal but the temporary. He's not focused on the spirit but the flesh. Listen, business is a blessing so long as you don't exalt it above the kingdom. Sometimes we ask ourselves questions. I do this all the time. Can I just do what I want and still see the kingdom in my life? Can I just be a good person, do all the right things and experience the kingdom? And the truth is, you can do all of the right things

but not be doing righteous things for your life in the kingdom. And that's one of the sobering realities of staying connected to the presence of God and prayer because what worked in the last season might not work in the next season. And just because you're a good person, it doesn't mean you get to be excused from being obedient. You can be a great mother, a great father, a great friend, a great boss, but if you're disobedient, your life will not flourish in the kingdom. And that's because Jesus says this, seek first the kingdom and all these things will be added to you because there's an order of things. He determines the order, we do not determine the order. When we come to the word of God, we have to let it reorder our thinking. Anything that's out of alignment with the way that he says, we have to surrender and we have to choose to reorder our thinking. He says, seek first the kingdom and all these things will be added. What are all these things? Life flourishing, friendships, finances, not just because he's Amazon OneClick and you get blessing whenever you obey God, it's because you realize he's the ultimate blessing. And whether you have a lot or you have a little,

you're still living in the blessing of the kingdom because he's the thing that cannot be taken away from you. The kingdom first and everything else will flourish because everything that doesn't matter just falls to the wayside. The third excuse, and this one is very familiar. I've experienced this in my own life and maybe some of you are in this season as well, but Luke 14, 20 says, and another said, I've married a wife and therefore I cannot come. And surely, I think in the church we have to be and therefore I cannot come. And surely, I think in the church we say, this one is a valid excuse, but in this story, not according to Jesus. Jesus says, hey, I still want you to say yes to the invite. And we have a context for marriage here in our Western idea but in Jewish culture, marriage was far more sacred than it even is in our American culture. One, strong group society. So it's not just two people getting married, it's two families getting married. There's a lot hinging upon this connection. So for the Jewish hearer, they're like, wait, this is very jarring for me because marriage has always been a reasonable excuse to take time away. But Jesus is saying, hey, marriage is not a valid excuse to say, hey, I'm putting my life in part for the kingdom. It's actually supposed to be something

that enhances your walk with the Lord. You can't delay entry into the kingdom for any reason, even marriage. In Deuteronomy, all of the hearers of this passage would have been very familiar with this reality. It says, when a man, this is a law, when a man is newly married, he shall not go out with the army or be liable for any public duty. He shall be free to be at home for one year to be happy with his wife whom he has taken. And Jesus is pointing out a reality that the Pharisees and those like them have taken this as an opportunity to take a back seat to their walk with God. And we, I've done it before, we've done it. I have kids, I get busy, the things of life demand. But I cannot let those things of life demand more than I pursue being in the kingdom of God. My kids will have such a shell of their mother if I cannot pursue the kingdom of God. I don't have it within myself to maintain my house. I don't have it within myself to maintain my marriage all on my own. I need the presence of God. I need the kingdom of God. I need the grace and the wisdom that is only available through the doorway of Jesus in the kingdom of God. So you can't afford not to, you know? And I remember when Lyle and I first met, we were like 10 minutes into dating, and he was like, hey, if we get married,

because yes, we had that conversation 10 minutes into dating. If we get married, I just need you to know, I pray really loudly in the mornings. Like, if that's like a break-up for you, and I was like, bring it on, I love it. And the reason is because he's testing the waters to see, am I going to have to abandon my faith practices in order to be in relationship with you? Which I have mad respect for, because the reality is, he was telling me very quickly, you are not more important to me than my relationship with God, and my stance in the kingdom of God. And if you invite me away from it, we are not gonna work out. Some of you are in a dating relationship and you need to have that conversation. You're welcome. Okay, so the fourth excuse, which doesn't really seem to sit on the surface, is having to do with the Pharisee who makes the statement in the beginning, blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God. And that's in Luke 14, verse 15. And basically, this excuse is wrong faith. So, hey, I don't know what I don't know. I have, you know, I have faith in the wrong thing. Oh, I'm fine.

Jesus, don't you see my heart? And that's what this guy is saying. He's like, Jesus, I already believe in you. You're here, you're at this table, and yet this guy is missing the whole kingdom. And Jesus has to give this whole parable to remind him that despite the fact that you see me, you are not the only kind of people going to get into the kingdom. The invitation is wide open and there is still room. So you might say yes, because you're eating bread with me here at the table, that you're gonna experience the kingdom. But I have some news for you, Pharisee. There's far more people getting into the kingdom than you expect or you even realize. And the Pharisee is doing something that I do a lot with Jesus, which is try to disqualify myself from a rebuke from Jesus. God, I know it, I know your word, I know how this is supposed to go. And Jesus is like, but I see the content of your heart. And you're missing the kingdom and I'm standing right in front of you. So it's not that they're not present or they're preoccupied by other things, it's that they have faith in the wrong thing, which is their own ability to enter the kingdom. Wrong faith in my ability to walk into the kingdom.

You don't have any ability in your own strength. It's only through Jesus that you can walk into the kingdom. It's not by your good works, it's not by your merit, it's not by your strong faith alone, it's by the fact that Jesus himself, the perfect lamb of God, sacrificed himself on your behalf. And because of that, he kicked open a doorway, the veil was torn from top to bottom, and you get to experience the kingdom of God. You get to experience the fullness of the kingdom. So not for even one second do we as the church get the chance to think that because we are so great and we know God that we're actually living in a kingdom way. The kingdom has benefits attached to it. Did you know that? Jesus walked around displaying the benefits of the kingdom. One, healing of the sick. Two, raising of the dead. Three, healing of the mind. Four, healing of the family. Six, through his death, the establishment of the church. I think I did five or six. But there are benefits, so many benefits of the kingdom, but you cannot walk in them on your own. You need Jesus, the door, to walk into the kingdom. And this Pharisee got rebuked very quickly through this story when Jesus said, hey, I make an invitation to people just like you and you reject it because you're preoccupied

by other things, and you're gonna be surprised when people you don't even think should be in the kingdom are walking in the kingdom because they said yes to my invitation to the kingdom. Jesus is telling them what's gonna happen when the Messiah arrives on the scene in parables and they're not even recognizing that the Messiah is with them. Here's the fifth excuse, not on the surface either, but I think something we all struggle with from time to time or know, people who have struggled with this, and that's the reality that sometimes we have. excuse that we just have no faith. We simply reject the invitation to the many-roomed house of the kingdom because we just don't think we have enough faith. But I love that Jesus says, even faith the size of a mustard seed is enough. Maybe you walked in the door and you have no faith. You're like, I don't even believe in Jesus. I'm not even accepting the invitation because I don't even believe in him. Maybe you walked in the door and said, I have weak faith. I've been through some things and I don't have the faith that I once had in Jesus. And I have been there before where I've had weak faith. And the Lord has reminded me in those moments that you don't need big faith. You have a big God.

You just need a mustard seed of faith to confess, Jesus, if you will. Remember those stories in the New Testament. It's if you can. Just a simple confession. I don't even know if you can, but I'm trying to hold out hope that you can. And Jesus responds even to the weakest of faith. You might feel like you have no faith today, but I am glad you're in the room because the presence of the Holy Spirit is here. And the Holy Spirit is so brilliant at stirring in you the faith of Jesus Christ. Sometimes you live with borrowed faith from Jesus. He has faith for you. Just open your heart and say, I have no faith. I have weak faith. Can you show up for me? And I love that the Bible articulates there are moments where you get increase of faith from Jesus. You don't even have it in your own pocket. You don't even have it at your own disposal. But if you'll just ask, he's faithful to give. Sometimes we just need to ask to realize that the invitation's already been sent our direction. The kingdom is not just somewhere we are all going someday. Do you guys feel that, know that now as we've been talking over the last several weeks? I think that's one of the biggest revelations

that if my children were sitting in the room right here today, that's what I would want to be impressed upon their heart, is the kingdom is not someday, the kingdom is today. And there is still room for you. Some of us have a confession in Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and that's where we start. That's called salvation. Jesus is the only way to the Father. So you need to step through the narrow doorway, that is Jesus, to experience the kingdom of God. If Jesus and God's whole design for us was only salvation, we would be caught up in a windstorm and be like Enoch and we were no more after we said yes to Jesus. But that's not the point, and this story articulates the fullness of it. He has given us, as the church, the gift of being the servants. So now, when you say yes to Jesus and you step into the kingdom of God, you have an assignment. Because you're the invitation. You're the invitation. This is why I love church. Maybe you don't have the words. Maybe you don't have the right thing to say to a friend that's searching for God, but you can say you're invited. You're invited to church.

You're invited to church with me today. The presence of God is there. We're not perfect, but God is, and he has something for you, and I just know if you'll get in the room with a community of people, you'll experience God, and that's what we are. We have become the invitations of God on the earth, and you never know what one invitation will do for somebody. You have no idea. How many of you are the product of somebody's invitation to church? Yeah. Raise them high. How many of you got saved because somebody invited you to church? Exactly. Exactly. The church is the embassy of the kingdom here on the earth. This should feel like the kingdom of God. Everybody is invited, and there is room for you, which is why we ask you to squish in, and we make all these other services, and we do all of these inconvenient things from time to time. And that is because we have a core value, and that is there is still room for you. Some people will never experience walking through the doors of a church, but you'll be the only invitation that they receive into the kingdom of God.

So treat your job with severity. Go to your workplace with severity. Go into your families with severity, knowing that God is sending you as an invitation to the kingdom for you to declare to somebody who feels way too far gone that there's still room for them. The door to the kingdom is not shut yet. We are alive. We are on the earth. He has not come back yet. I pine for the day that the king of kings will return, but I'm grateful it's not right now because I'm so glad that he's still making it known to the earth that there is still room in the kingdom and that there's still an opportunity to meet God and to know him fully. And I am sobered as a pastor by that reality. I have wrestled from time to time with the purpose of church. Is the church for the lost? Is the church for the saved? If the kingdom is for all, so is the church. Come in and find Jesus. Accept him. There is no way to the Father except through Jesus. And this is a place where he can be found. We painted on the bridge for a reason. God is here, not because I say so, but because he says so, that he will manifest himself

here in an embassy of the kingdom here on the earth. And that's why I love church. It's not perfect, but it doesn't have to be perfect to be effective. He's perfect. Worse, going out to the highways, the byways, the hedges, and all it takes is one invitation. You never know what one invitation could do. I was 21 years old. My best friend Kim invited me to house church. I wasn't really about house church at the time because they felt weird and scary. But she said to me, you have to come. The presence of God is there. And I said, I'll go anywhere the presence is. So I show up at this house church and I meet this 25-year-old kid named Lyle Phillips who was ministering at this house church. And the rest is history. And I had this tearful revelation this morning as I was looking out over the first service. And I said, one invitation. I thought one yes meant something for me personally. But I'm looking across this room and I realized that one yes meant all of this. You never know what one invitation could do. One invitation could change a life. One invitation was yes to this thing called legacy. And I'm so grateful that God doesn't live rejected. And every time I reject the invitation,

He just sends a new one. And you might be sitting in the room today and you've rejected a hundred invitations, but you showed up today for some wild, crazy reason. And I'm declaring over you that now is the time to accept the invitation of God. He's here, He can be found. Find Him while He can be found. Let's stand this morning. And I wanna take a moment and I wanna pray for those who have the burning in their heart to say yes to the invitation. Maybe it's your first time saying yes to Jesus as Lord and Savior. Maybe you're coming home, you're returning. But today is the day to respond to the invitation. If this message is anything, it is the invitation. Not because I said it, I'm just a servant. I'm just here to make the invite plain and tell you that there's still room for you. So with every head bowed and every eye closed, I wanna make the invitation plain. If you know that you need to say yes to Jesus and come home to Him, maybe it's the first time or the first time in a long time. Nobody is looking around this room, but if that's you, could you lift your hand this morning? We're all gonna pray alongside you. We had some people in the first service that met God today, it was so powerful.

I see you, anybody else? Lift your hand high so I can see you. Amazing, we're gonna pray with those who have lifted their hands today and we're gonna celebrate the fact that the kingdom got a little bit bigger today. The invitation was responded to. And God is doing what only He can do, which is bring salvation and a kingdom life. So everybody, let's pray together. Jesus, I give You my life. I repent of my sin. And I turn towards You.
