Put Some Proximity on It

Let's read this together, Matthew 13, verse three. And he told them many things in parables, saying a sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground where they did not have much soil. And immediately they sprang up since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some 60, and some 30. He who has ears, let him hear. Let me stop you just for a minute and tell you again, we are in a sermon collection called The Kingdom is Like. The Kingdom is Like. And we're going through the parables of Jesus where he articulates or illustrates what it's like for a disciple to live as a citizen of the kingdom of God. And so what he's doing, what we're reading today is a parable that he's given everybody who would listen. All right, it's not just the disciples here. It's not just the religious here, but it's also the crowds. And he is sharing the gospel of the kingdom. And he's talking about who would receive it and how they put it to work in their life.

Verse 10, then the disciples, where'd y'all go? Then the disciples and said to him, why do you speak to them in parables? Notice how they needed some proximity to get some understanding of the parable. He said, okay, we heard you preaching to everybody. Now we're gonna come to you in private and we're gonna ask you for an explanation. And he answered them, to you it has been to know of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it has not been given. Have you ever read that and wondered what in the world are those secrets? You ever thought about that? Like, what is that? Is that some type of like esoteric fringe knowledge that after I've been a Christian for many decades, I can finally tap into some sort of realm of revelation that nobody else gets? Nobody else, huh? That's just me when I read that. Well, we'll get to that in a minute. For to the one who has, more will be given and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. And this is why I speak to them in parables because seeing they don't see and hearing they don't hear, nor do they understand. Indeed, in their case, the prophecy of Isaiah

is fulfilled that says you will indeed hear but never understand. You will indeed see but never perceive. For this people's heart has grown dull and with their eyes they can barely hear, with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, then I would heal them. But blessed are your eyes. Somebody look at your neighbor and say, blessed are your eyes. For they see. Now look at your other neighbor and say, blessed are your ears. For they hear. Yeah, for truly I say to you, many prophets and righteous people long to see what you see and did not see it and to hear what you hear and did not hear it. See, you gotta be reminded of the blessing that it is to be a new covenant Christian in the house of God today. Do you know that every single person who wrote in the Old Testament, they were looking ahead to a day when the Holy Spirit would not just be around God's people, when the Holy Spirit would not just bless God's people, but when the Holy Spirit would take up residence

within God's people, don't you know that they look to our day in the Spirit with jealousy, a holy jealousy. They said, man, we know about the Messiah, but there is coming a day when the Messiah will be revealed and he will release the Holy Spirit. You gotta remember how blessed you are. You could have been born at any time. It's a lot of Bible, isn't it? Now here's what's unique about this parable. You guys are standing forever. Here's what's unique about this parable is that Jesus gives the parable to the crowd and what does he say? If you have ears to hear, hear it. But then when the disciples come to Jesus and they say, what did you mean by that? This is what's unique about this parable. Parable is that Jesus goes ahead and breaks it down and Matthew records it and we get to read it so now we get to see the parable interpreted by Jesus himself and Here's what he says in verse 18 here Then the parable of the sower when anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it The evil one comes and snatches away what has been sown in his heart This is what was sown along the path So the birds that he mentioned a moment ago, that is the devil All right, they devil comes snatches it verse 20 as for what was sown on rocky ground This is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy yet He has no root in himself But endures for a little while and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word Immediately he falls away. So whenever Jesus refers to the Sun that scorches the seed he is talking about

hardship or tribulation All right You with me? Okay. So verse 22 as for that was what was sown among the thorns This is the one who hears the word. This is the most interesting of them all but the cares of the world and The deceitfulness of riches Choke out the word and it proves unfruitful as for what was sown on good soil. This is the one who hears the word and We got to get understanding he indeed bears fruit and yields in One case a hundredfold in another 60 and in another 30. I don't know about you today church, but I want to be fruitful Anybody in the room you want to be fruitful today? Come on, we want to be fruitful today for the kingdom of heaven Well, if you want to be fruitful, you're gonna have to do what my title says today Which is you got to put some proximity on it Get your shovel out let's put some Proximity on it. Let's pray Lord. We say thank you for your word It's everlasting and unchanging and yet always faithful to change us So we humble ourselves today before truth and we say God correct us where we need to be corrected Consume everything in us that does not bring you glory God We want to drop everything that we're holding on to that You did not hand us help us today Holy Spirit to live according to your word in Jesus name We pray and everybody said amen. Amen. Amen, you can be seated I don't know if y'all remember this or not, but years ago there was this huge millennial trend Which was to buy a Fiddle-leaf fig Does anybody remember that like like back like pre Covid 2020 era like fiddle if you had a fiddle-leaf fig, bro, we knew you were doing alright Like I'm talking like a mature fiddle-leaf. I'm not talking about a seedling like that. You got from the Home Depot nursery I'm talking about like you really got a grown fiddle-leaf fig in your house You know what I'm saying? Like you show up to somebody's house. They have a grown fiddle-leaf fig. You're like, oh you rich rich

It was just some of it's just if you had that, you know, very developed fiddle-leaf, you know, and It was Mother's Day Around that time and listen, we did not really have a whole lot of money But I got this grand idea because I follow my wife on Pinterest that I would get her a fiddle-leaf fig so so that she could put it in a very cute location in our living room and So when people come would come over they would say oh look look at that beautiful tree you have in your house So even though we didn't have a whole lot of expendable income at the time we had just started having children I went to a plant store that was real hipster it was in East Nashville and And I said, hey, do you have any fiddle-leaf figs because they're very popular and I want to get my wife one for Mother's Day And he said yeah, I got a I got him, you know multiple fiddle-leaf figs And he showed me the one that was the most grown and it was like, you know Very curated and cultivated and it was big and bunchy at the top and it was slender, you know I mean somebody had really taken care of this fiddle-leaf and I said that is the one right there I'm gonna get that for Allison and he said, okay, that's fine You know bring get a friend with a truck. We'll load it up. I mean it was that big All right, it's a good Mother's Day gift All right And so I was very excited about taking this home and I bought it and he said now listen I want you to know that this tree is extremely temperamental For anybody who has a fiddle-leaf, you know exactly what I'm talking about He's like the tree is a little dramatic. All right, so you have to care for it very intentionally and I'm like Bro, chill, I'm from Kentucky, all right? Like, it's all good, bro. Growing stuff is in the DNA, I got it, you know? I'm gonna take care of this tree for my wife. You don't need to stress, okay? Well, he needed to stress, because I obviously did not know what I was doing.

I took that thing home, I put it exactly where I thought that she would like it. She comes in, Mother's Day, she sees the fiddle leaf, and she's like, oh, what a beautiful tree, this is amazing. She's so excited about it, and I'm like, yeah, I knew you would want it right here. It's in a very cute location. Come on, let's take a photo. We can post it on Instagram right away. Everybody's gonna like this. The fiddle leaf is in the background, right? And we're super pumped, and within a month, let me tell you, man, that thing is dropping leaves like crazy, and I'm thinking to myself, the expensive tree, you know, that I put in this cool spot is dying actively. So, you know, I told my wife, I said, I know what to do, it's all good. I talked to the guy at the shop, and then I secretly went on Google, and I started reading blogs, you know, from like horticulturists about fiddle leaf figs, and they confirmed exactly what the guy had said, which is they're dramatic, they're temperamental, but also you gotta pay close attention to the soil, because if you don't treat the soil rightly, then the soil will actually get dry rotted or moldy if you don't water it properly, and it needs fertilizer. Like he said, the tree is very dramatic. So after reading all of these blogs,

I thought to myself, the problem, I have found it. It's actually the soil. What I need to do is put some fertilizer on it. So I took that thing out back, and I changed up the soil, and I put it back in the same spot, and I said, this right here is the cool location. I've got the right soil, and now I'm putting fertilizer on it. Now, what I learned in this process of taking care of my wife's fiddle leaf, spoiler alert, that tree is now dead, is this, I learned this, that the state of the soil determines the health of the harvest. The state of the soil determines the health of the harvest. And I thought about that this week, this whole fiddle leaf experience, as I'm reading this parable, because I'm realizing that Jesus is teaching his listeners the same thing. There is no way that you're ever going to thrive in the kingdom. There is no possible way that you're ever gonna be fruitful for the kingdom of God unless you pay attention to the state of your soil, which, by the way, the soil is your soul. It's your heart. And so Jesus is teaching the crowds, hey, if you want to be fruitful in my kingdom, it's very important that you cultivate the right condition in your soul.

So that's what I wanna talk about today, because the soul is like soil. And as Jesus is teaching us this parable about what his kingdom is like, he's talking about this sower. He's saying the sower goes out. Now, listen, anybody who preaches the gospel of the kingdom is a sower, anybody. But specifically here, he's talking about himself. And so he goes out and he sows the seed to the disciples. And then he moves on and he sows the seed to the religious. And then he moves on and he sows the seed to anybody who would listen, the crowds. He's just sowing seed, he's just sowing. And he's showing us how we are to spread the gospel of the kingdom. He's not, hey, what's the condition of your heart before I sow the seed? No, he's just sowing the seed. He's sowing the seed, but he's saying it is the condition of your heart that's going to determine your receptivity to the message that I am giving today. And he's doing this not in the temple, it's not in the synagogue, but it's in a boat, actually, on a beach, which is a pretty awesome place, I think, to receive the gospel message. And he's teaching everybody. But here's what you notice in the scripture

is that some people get it and other people miss it. And I can identify with this as a pastor. It's like some people get it and some people miss it. And so what Jesus is teaching, he's saying, here's how you get it. Here's how you get it. And he starts talking about these different states of the soil. Now, listen, one of the things that is so easy. To do is to hear a message like this and then say oh, well, I'm the good soil Cuz I cuz I came today You know, but if you want to talk about bad soil pastor, I can tell you somebody who needs to hear this message When we read this we might think oh well Jesus is talking about four Distinct strangers and and I just want you to know that I have been every single soil At some point in some season In my own life, I don't know about you, but whenever I talk to you about this soil today I don't want you to think well, I'll never be that I've never been that but I am this Because it's not about four different people it's about four different possibilities for all of us It's not about which one you are it's about which one you are right now Because as the seasons shift the state of the soil can be different in one season You Might be ready. You're like, yeah, I like what you dishing out right now. I thrive in the spring, you know But you might be in a different season where it gets dark a little bit earlier and it's cold Outside and you don't like what God is dishing out right now so you're a different state of soil and what I want to talk about today is how to get it and How to be fruitful because I believe all of us want to be fruitful. Are you with me? I want to be fruitful. If you want to be fruitful say amen. Can I tell you it's in your DNA?

It's in the genetic code For you to be fruitful as a Christian God said to our first parents Adam and Eve when he gave the first Great Commission. What did he say be? fruitful and do what Multiply this is a kingdom instinct that the Spirit has installed in you It is not about your ego that you need to somehow try to shut down We're all called to be Reproductive for the kingdom We're all called to be reproductive Now, I think that a lot of times whenever you read this verse of Scripture. We do so through a wet deeply Western radically individualized lens and so whenever we read stuff like for the one who has more will be given and he will have an Abundance from the one who has not even what he has will be taken away or we we read about you know Producing hundredfold 60 fold 30 fold and sure there are some principles that you can apply to a broad spectrum But we're not going to do the prosperity thing today where I tell you the context of this parable is that God is about to Give you a 100 fold increase in your money Now I hope he does Yeah, you should say amen to that it's okay just to be like yeah, amen God come on if you want to do that. Amen sure But that's not the context of this parable this is about kingdom advancement It's not so much about personal blessing because when we talk about kingdom fruitfulness We're not just talking about your growth in isolation for yourself. We're not just talking about you increasing in knowledge We're not just talking about you becoming a better more moral person We're talking about kingdom fruitfulness kingdom Reproduction we're talking about disciples that make disciples Uh-oh We're talking about disciples that make disciples How easy is it to talk about how on fire for God we are but when we look at our fruitfulness for the kingdom? If we get honest, it's like man, I ain't making no disciples Uh-oh

When I talk about kingdom fruitfulness better said when the Bible talks about kingdom fruitfulness We're talking about people who see other people get saved. Oh It's getting quiet now, oh It's getting quiet now pastor. I was hoping you were gonna give me seven steps to greater success. I Thought you were gonna give me a good TED talk. Just spiritualize it a little bit. Oh I'm gonna get in trouble today. I'm talking about kingdom fruitfulness. I'm talking about having an impact on history I'm talking about living and leaving a robust legacy for the next generation. I'm talking about being a world changer I'm talking about being a history maker I'm talking about the next generation and the generation after that and the generation after that is different because of your obedience Come on I'm talking about cities set on fire for God because of your surrender I'm talking about revival in the universities because you yielded to the Holy Spirit You said yeah God if you want to do something do it through me. I'm ready. Let's roll. I want to have kingdom fruitfulness I don't have worldly success at the expense sense of kingdom fruitfulness what are we talking about? are you with me? y'all this has got in my guts this week I mean it's like ahh it's deep and I'm like man I want I want kingdom fruitfulness God I don't want to live for the sake of protecting my own comfort y'all say this with me my soul is a seedbed depending upon the state of your soul will depend upon how you receive the message of God's kingdom and if you ain't healthy and prepared properly then a 100 fold harvest is not actually possible and let me tell you your harvest is way more predictable than you realize oh well you know whatever the size of the harvest man it's up to God yeah we know that God brings the increase but how you handle your heart is a direct indicator of your forthcoming kingdom harvest man I wish I had an hour I wish I had an hour I ain't got an hour you're going to have to come to south tonight because I can go over there but let me give you these 4 states real quick, real quick number 1 hard ground, hard ground so there are some people with hard ground

maybe you're in the room today let me tell you you can soften up you can receive the seed of God these are people with hard hearts they're not humble enough to be teachable their hearts are impenetrable they have hard soil over their soul in verse 4 Jesus said some seeds fell along the path and the birds came and devoured them what this means is is that the sower is broadcasting throwing the seed and some of the seed lands on the hard packed down ground of their heart and never makes it in so the soil of their heart is not soft and it's not supple it's not open to receiving the seed of God the hardest part of being a Bible teacher is not doing what I'm doing now it's not the hardest part the hardest part of being a Bible teacher is that the people that you teach have predetermined what they are willing to believe before they ever show up now I'm good I'm good I appreciate that man that's just your opinion not when we're reading the Word of God listen I'm not out to lunch on how non-transformative my opinion is who cares about my opinion somebody asked me recently what do you think about my decision? I said who cares what I think about your decision? realistically I appreciate that thank you so much I mean we can have a conversation and connect but at the end of the day my opinion does not matter because you can't hold fast to my opinion when you go through the storms of your life you're not going to be transformed by my opinion you're not going to be delivered by my opinion you're not going to be able to shout your pastor's opinion into the darkness whenever you're tempted and going through spiritual warfare that ain't going to work I want to help you today you're going to have to learn how to wield the sword you're going to have to learn to do what Jesus did in the middle of the wilderness it is written not my pastor said I'm just trying to help you today you ain't got to tweet me quote the Word you ain't got to repost me get the Word in you man you want to be dynamic for the kingdom

it ain't about you becoming like me it's about you becoming like Jesus I don't need no mini-me's I'm already too sinful and jacked up messed up weird and countrified we need you to be you who God has made you to be and you can't do that with a hard heart you can't do that with an unteachable spirit that's why in verse 19 he says anybody who hears the Word of the kingdom and does not understand it now you've got to zoom in there to that word understanding it's not cognitive that's not the word, ok? so you, I wish I had more time is that in an eastern context it's very different it's not a western context so the way that they're talking about understanding is not like what we're doing today it's not about your ability to grow in your education because here's what the devil loves for you to receive a seed a message about the kingdom and for you to remember it but do nothing about it because this is where a lot of us are well I remembered what you preached that don't mean you were transformed it doesn't mean that you produced any fruit so when Jesus said you have no understanding he's not talking about head knowledge what he's talking about is applied implementation this means that the people who have are ground as the soil of their souls, only hear and they never do. Are you with me? So when we just hear the word and we don't do the word, we can be deceived into thinking that we're fruitful when we're not. And that's what James meant when he said, do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves, do what it says. All right, number two, rocky ground. Number two is rocky ground. Jesus said, other seeds fell on rocky ground

where they didn't have much soil and immediately they sprang up since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose, they were scorched. These are the people, this is rocky ground, these are the people with no spiritual depth. And the reason they have no spiritual depth is because they have no history with God. They may have wit, they may be visible, but they have nearly no depth because they've not walked with God long enough. They may be passionate, they may be enthusiastic, they may be energetic, but they don't have what it takes to survive hardship. You can be a cute Christian all day long, but you better count the cost because there will be warfare. You gotta remember this. Everybody say, God is good. God is good. You gotta get that, you gotta get that. But God ain't safe. Don't think that getting saved means going and hanging out with the Father in a cozy cottage in a space of serenity for the rest of your life. If you believe that that is gonna be your experience when you become a Christian, you are gonna be shocked in about six weeks when the sun comes up to scorch that seed, and you're like, hold on, I thought Christians

didn't go through any hardship. No, we're not gonna sugarcoat it for you. But this is the way that it is. You're gonna experience spiritual warfare. The devil is not ready to yield up his territory. And when you get saved and you get set free and you get sanctified, let me tell you, the spirit realm realizes, man, hey, this guy is powerful. This girl is anointed. So they bring hardship, enemy brings hardship. Number three, thorny ground, all right? Thorns, thorny ground, all right? That's the third one. Now, this one is so much more complicated, but I think it might be the most important in our context because here's what Jesus says when he interprets the parable. Verse 22, he says, as for what was sown among the thorns, this is the one who hears the word, catch this, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choked the word out. And it proves unfruitful. Now, here's what's crazy about this because this state of the soil actually has the potential of being productive. The hard heart, the soil never even goes in. The seed never even goes into the soil. In the rocky ground, the seed goes in, it springs up quickly, and it gets taken out. In the state of this soil, the seed actually goes in,

germinates, gets watered, and springs up and has the potential of being fruitful, but before it can be fruitful, the thorns absorb all the nutrition and take away the seed's ability to actually be productive. And here's what Jesus says the thorns are. It's the cares of this life and it's the deceitfulness of riches. Now, I've been pastoring long enough to know many people like this because they're smart and they typically learn quickly. They don't have a hard heart, so they're ready to apply what they hear. They're seasoned with experience. They've been through some stuff. They've got some wisdom, so they don't have a rocky heart, but they get some success in the world according to the culture, and they don't end up bearing kingdom fruit because they get distracted by the wrong things. Rather than do the thing that God told them to do, they're very preoccupied with making more money. This is the end of it all. This is what I want. This is what I want. What about the call of God on your life to be fruitful, to make disciples, to win souls, to support and strengthen the local church? That's really not a priority right now. What God's telling me to do is to do this.

Sure, absolutely. Do all the right things that you're supposed to do. It's not a bad thing to make money. It's not a bad thing to care about your life, but whenever you do so at the expense of leaving behind your kingdom assignment as a citizen of the kingdom of God, you may be religious, but you're not productive. In fact, the thorns, here's what the thorns are, idols. You got all the potential in the world, but you're putting other things in front of the kingdom. You could be dynamic for the kingdom. I can't tell you how many people I've pastored like this. You could be so powerful for the kingdom. You got prophetic words on your life. You're influential, charismatic, dynamic. All the things could preach the word could leave you could do all kinds of stuff, but man I'm just too preoccupied with the things that I want to do So the seed gets choked out eventually Jeremiah chapter 2 he said this this is what the Lord says what fault did your father's find in me that they have strayed so Far from me. They followed worthless idols and then in the process became worthless themselves I don't Lord. I don't want to be worthless for the kingdom. I Don't want to be worthless for the king. I don't want to just take up space in the vineyard Because what Jesus said in John chapter 15, he said I'm the vine and you are the branches Whoever abides in me and I in him It's he that bears much fruit So if I'm not bearing kingdom fruit, I know where I'm not I'm not abiding I'm not to bring it back to the title. I'm not in proximity To Jesus because here's the thing whenever Jesus says it's been given to you. It's been given to you It's been given to you the secrets of the kingdom of heaven. Okay, first thing

I want you to notice is he says it's given not achieved He said it's given not achieved if you want to grow in Spiritual wisdom. Here's what New Age will teach you You know, you've got to achieve this state of serenity. This is what Buddhism will teach you this is what other world religions will tell you you have to achieve you have to suppress yourself You have to tap into the knowledge of this is what Freemasonry will tell you you can go to this another degree of secret wisdom Or whatever it is Are you with me like it's always this you can go up you can go up this whenever Jesus is saying it has Given to you. He said this is not an achieved thing I'm giving it to you because you are my disciples because you've come to me. You're in proximity to me I'm giving you the mystery and when we talk about the mysteries and the secrets we think oh, what is this? It's like some kind of fringe wisdom This is like oh This is some kingdom principles that nobody else knows about but I know about because I've spent so many hours in the prayer closet today That's Not what Jesus is talking what Jesus is talking about are you ready is himself Jesus is saying the mystery is me the secrets Is me the Savior what has been prophesied about and talked about and written in the Torah about and all these things that everybody can't figure Out it has been given to you my disciples the one who came close I'm showing you what the mystery is the mystery is me if you come to me you'll get this understanding Living in the kingdom doesn't mean figuring all sorts of stuff out It means stepping close and getting in proximity to Jesus and letting Jesus teach you how to live your life How do you want me to live you're the king this is a kingdom isn't it you're not my life coach You're my Lord. Give me tell me how to live. Tell me how to live a kingdom life There's a better way to be human church. I Want to live an abundant life. He came that you might have life and life more abundantly. This is not some religion It's not Christian religious. You don't add it onto your life like I put in my Facebook bio like I just adding it to my life No, it's a it's a whole way of living completely different than anything you've ever known. It's not something you add like an accoutrement And so when he says like hey

If you have more it's going to be given what he's talking about when you have experience with Jesus You're gonna get more experience. You have intimacy with Jesus. You have more intimacy You want to be fruitful a hundredfold? You want to be fruitful 60? You want to be fruitful 30? This is just my opinion, but If you will work on all three of those types of soil And and and you will work on on the soil of your heart and you'll be teachable you have the possibility of producing 30 fold If you'll build history with God and you'll have depth while also staying teachable. You've got a possibility of 60 fold If you'll stay teachable and you'll cultivate depth with God and build history with God and also you'll deal with your idols And you won't let no thorns pop up in the heart and you dismiss distractions and you say I've got one assignment This is my occupation This is my job description I'm on mission for the kingdom of God This is who I am as a citizen of a different dimension. No, this world don't hold me down no more then you've got the possibility of a hundredfold, that's just me that's just one person's opinion I think if you cultivate all three of those that's the possibility of a kingdom citizen that can produce kingdom fruit a hundredfold if you won't do those three things I don't know that you'll be able to be productive alright, let me finish with this you remember that fiddly fig I bought for my wife? whenever I changed the soil and I did all that stuff, it helped a little bit but ultimately it continued to shed leaves and I remembered what the guy said, he said, oh you know this tree is like dramatic and it's kind of like emotional and just, it thrives where it thrives man you know what I did? I said I'm gonna move the tree from where it looks cute in the living room and I'm gonna sit it next to this window in our bedroom because it's gonna have a greater proximity to the sun and I'm not lying to y'all, within another 30 days that thing started to blossom and all new leaves was coming out of it and I realized man that it wasn't just the state of the soil that I needed to pay attention to but it was also the proximity to the sun because if you will stay in proximity to the sun, He is the gardener
