What Happens at Harvest Time

All right, let's open our Bibles Matthew chapter 13, we're going to conclude this sermon collection called the kingdom is Like the kingdom is like we have been studying Almost every single notable parable of the Lord Jesus when he spoke and gave us Illustrations as to what his kingdom is like because as Christians we are expected to live different Can I get two good amens? If you are a Christ follower, you are expected to be consecrated and set apart That means you live different. Can I get another good? Amen? Amen So by studying all of these parables the kingdom is like what we are learning from Jesus directly Is this this is how we are to live as disciples that call him Lord If you are a Christian Jesus is not your life coach. Jesus is your Lord That means it's spiritually illegal to call him Lord and tell him no Uh-oh, I don't know. I just think we've gotten too accustomed to referring to commandments as invitations He said what he said and Today is one of those days because this actual parable is probably the most intense of them all that we've read in two months Matthew chapter 13 and we're gonna read the parable of the weeds and that's gonna start in verse 24 and go to Verse 30. So once you found that if you don't mind to join me stand to your feet for the reading of the Word of God I'm gonna read it out loud all together as a family Matthew 13 Verse 24 Out of all the parables this one is probably the most severe I Don't have a cute sermon for you today. I just want to give you that disclaimer in advance I don't have any personal stories that are funny. I don't have any real strong points We're just basically gonna open up the Bible and let God speak to us from the scripture. Are you with me? Is that okay? I Was gonna do it. Anyway, even if you said no, it's not okay I was gonna do it. Anyway, Matthew 13 verse 24 says this he put another parable before them saying the kingdom of heaven May be compared to a man who sowed What kind of seed? where But while his men were sleeping his enemy came and sowed weeds

Among the wheat and then went away so when the plants came up and bore grain then the weeds appeared also and The servants of the master of the house came and said to him Master did you not sow good seed in your field? How then does it have weeds? and he said to them an enemy has done this you need to remember that right there as A justified response to the question why in the world are weeds everywhere? Jesus says an enemy has done this so the servant said to him then do you want us to go and gather them? But he said no less than gathering the weeds you root up the weed along with them Let both grow together until the harvest and at harvest time I will tell the Reapers gather the weeds first and bind them in bundles to be burned But gather the wheat into my barn. I Don't really have a cute title. It's simply this what happens at harvest time what happens at Harvest time Lord. We say thank you for your word. It's everlasting and unchanging Yet always faithful to change us and so today God as we submit ourselves and we humble ourselves before your mighty hand We ask that you would change us Lord. We ask that you not leave one of us without transformation today I declare in Jesus name that all of us will leave this room Differently than the way that we walked in in Jesus name. We pray and the church said Amen, you can be seated As I mentioned this parable is probably one of the most severe because it speaks to us quite Seriously about the end of the age or the end times or if you want a really fancy Expensive theological term you can say that it speaks to us about eschatology, which is the theological study of the end times and this passage of scripture is One that is so dense. It's got plenty to say and if you read carefully through the Gospels Then you will see that Jesus Spoke actually about the end times more than we think he did He talked a lot about the end of the age He spoke a lot about the kingdom and the end times and this parable details some of its most important features of that time and thankfully just like the parable of the sower Jesus actually Interprets this parable for us, which is a big blessing for me as a Bible teacher

Because I didn't really have to do a lot of work in Interpreting this this week when I studied it Jesus interprets it for you, which I think he's the best interpreter and He gives us this interpretation in verse 36. He said Well in verse 36 it details where he gave it He left the crowds went into the house and his disciples came to him and they said explain to us the parable of the weeds And here's what he said The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man The field is the world Not the church. So be clear about that. Not the church It's the world some people interpret this parable as Jesus speaking about the church. He's not speaking about the church He's speaking about the world and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom everybody say that's us and If it's not you before you leave here today, it can be The weeds are the sons of the evil one The enemy the one who sowed them is the devil and the harvest is the end of the age and the reapers are the angels Just as weeds are gathered and burned with fire So will it be at the end of the age? the Son of Man will send his angels and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and Lawbreakers and throw them into the fiery furnace and in that place there will be weeping sorrow and Gnashing of teeth a lot of people interpret that as pain, but that's not what gnashing of teeth is It's actually to shake your fist at God. It's actually to Be angry about the fact that your consequences have finally caught up to you That as a righteous judge, he's put you where you deserve to be a Gnashing of teeth is happening there and then the righteous Will shine like the Sun in the kingdom of their father And then Jesus finishes and says he who has ears to hear let him hear The righteous will shine like the Sun in the kingdom of their father. So I made a chart for you

I don't always make charts. I'm I Don't want to say I'm not that intelligent because I'm growing in my ability to make charts and be intelligent But nonetheless I made this for you because I thought it would be helpful Here's the parable and here's the interpretation a man sowed. Who's that man? Everybody say Jesus Good seed what is good seed that is us that is God's people and that is Jesus his church His field his field is the world not the church You have to understand it is the world and the enemy came who's the enemy Lucifer and Satan you can go to the next slide Weeds that are among the wheat are who sinful people as well as demons Demonic principalities and powers. I told you we're gonna get dense today Let both grow together Jesus told him until the harvest what's the harvest the harvest is the end times listen I know if you're Pentecostal in here You love to prophesy the harvest because you speak of evangelism and when all of the souls are gonna come into the kingdom But when the harvest happens, it's not going to be just about salvation. It's also going to be about separation So in the sheep and the goats get separated it's when the wheat and the weeds get separated The end of the age is not just a time for revival. It's time for sorting things out Making things right if you get anything from this parable know this that Jesus is very passionate About the field and uprooting evil from the world That's where we're headed. We're headed to heaven. I'll say it like this. We're headed to a harvest. I Will tell the Reapers the Reapers of the angels bond them in bundles. What is that? That's hell It's hell you may not showing up this morning thinking like man get a good message on hell I'm not gonna stay on it too long. But hell is real I'm just gonna say it again. Hell is real Right, amen But gather the wheat into my barn. Where's that heaven? Then the righteous will shine like the Sun in the kingdom That is where we know that we are headed what we know for sure is what we're moving towards because Jesus tells us and that is that as Righteous people you and I everybody say that's me There is coming a day when you will shine like the Sun in the kingdom of our Father consider the Consider the relational reconciliation

that will take place on that day as you dwell in the kingdom of your Father. It's gonna be glorious, and you'll shine like the sun. I'll tell you a little bit more about what that means in a minute. But this shows us that the kingdom is now, Jesus came announcing, repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand, which means you better change the way that you think or you're gonna miss the closest thing to you. It's right here, there is an announcement. The kingdom is real. Jesus has inaugurated it. You can come into it. All you've got to do is put saving faith in Christ Jesus and follow him as your Lord. Again, not as your life coach, not as an accoutrement to your life, as somebody that you just give a sliver of your life to. No, no, no, no. You did not get saved because you gave your life to God. You got saved because God gave his life to you. You don't make Jesus a part of your life. You become a part of his life. That's how it works in the kingdom of God. He becomes the Lord. He's the Lord, and you come into the kingdom, but both the kingdom is now and also not yet, because we can see a whole lot of the kingdom right now, but we're not gonna be able to see here

all that he wants to show us ultimately. Are you with me? Because we're headed to heaven. We're headed to a harvest. We're headed to the marriage supper of the lamb. So let me break down this parable section by section for you just kind of some themes here. Number one is that Jesus is a sower. This is something that you've got to know about Jesus. He is the OG evangelist. He's coming through, and he is sowing seed, and it doesn't even matter the condition of the soil. He is sowing seed. He doesn't inspect the condition of the soil before he sows the seed, and so he sows the seed, which in the parable of the sower, we know is the word of the kingdom, but in this parable, the seed is you and I, because as the word of the kingdom germinates and the power of the Holy Spirit waters the word of the kingdom, the seed becomes a seedling, which becomes a soul, which ultimately is destined to become mature wheat. Are you guys still tracking with me? All right, I know I'm going quick, but I want to make sure that we get through the whole thing because what starts out as the word then becomes the soul, and so what is happening here that we're learning is that Jesus is a sower, and he's sowing seeds that become sons.

So rather than just say Jesus is a sower, we can also say Jesus is a saver, a savior, because Jesus saves, amen? And he saves all sorts of people. Sometimes the last people that you think he should. Sometimes the people that you're thinking Jesus would never hang out with those folks, those are the exact kind of people that pursued Jesus because they knew they would be welcomed and accepted, and he saved those folks, which is one of the reasons why there's so much contention in these parables, because the religious people, they were looking at Jesus and looking at the crowds and looking at the sinners and looking at the tax collectors who were coming to listen to the parables about the kingdom, and they were thinking, surely this man is not talking about letting those people into the kingdom, but he's sowing, and he's saving, and he's bringing people into the kingdom, and whenever we come into the kingdom and we get saved, we don't immediately go to heaven, right? You're still here. That would be nice, like as soon as you say, amen, I'm giving my whole life to Jesus, it's all yours, you saved me, Jesus, boom, straight to heaven. That would kind of be cool, but that's not what Jesus wants, just to get all of us to heaven. He wants to get heaven here, which is why he tells us

to pray your kingdom come, your will be done on the earth as it is in heaven. Yeah, come on, amen. So as soon as we get saved, we don't immediately go to heaven, no, what he does is he leaves us right where we are so that we can grow in the field, in the world, and this leads me to the second point, which is this, we are his seeds, this is who we are, and so we all start out as a seed, but over time, we grow and we become mature wheat. That is God's goal for our life. We all start out as a immature little seed, which is why you can't always tell the difference between wheat and weeds whenever they're young. Sometimes what we've gotta do, religious people, church people, Christian people, is give. young seeds time and space to grow and can't require that they bear fruit like we bear fruit. They've only been saved ten months. It takes time for the seed to become wheat. Let me say it differently. Sometimes it takes time for the wheat to get off the weed. Y'all, y'all, y'all, y'all ain't getting what I'm saying. Sometimes it takes a little bit for the, hey come on, for the wheat to get off the weed. Sometimes it takes a little bit for them to stop getting drunk, stop getting high, stop sleeping around with people they're not married to. Oh y'all too quiet for 10 a.m. Sometimes it takes a little bit for maturity and we grant grace and space and we say okay I acknowledge the fact that the seed has been sown and you're coming up as a son of the kingdom and it's gonna take a little bit of time for you to mature and I don't know if they're a wheat or a weed, right? I can't really tell the difference but that's what Jesus is showing us in this parable in part three. He says everybody grows in the same wild

world. Everybody. We're all growing in this thing together. In many ways I know it we may look very similar to the world but we are not of the world. We can work in the same companies, we can live in the same neighborhoods, we can eat at the same restaurants, we can shop at the same malls but we are not the same because we are saved. They not like us. Even if people don't see it on the surface, born-again believers are inherently different. We have a spirit that is different. We've got God's spirit to say it another way we are in the world but we're not of the world. It's Jesus that makes us unique. It's Jesus that makes us distinct. The scripture would say that we are consecrated, that we are set apart because we belong to Jesus and even though other people may not know who's who, God does. God knows who belongs to him and who doesn't and now I'm not saying any of this to suggest that we should buy into some kind of us versus them mentality. That's not what Christianity is all about like ridden the world of infidels. We don't do that but we do have to acknowledge number four is that there will always be warfare. This is what I want somebody to take home with them today because you have been expecting your Christian life to be a bed of roses since you got saved and you cannot figure out why has life been so hard since I've given myself to King Jesus because you've not you've not come into a kingdom that is absent of conflict or chaos. You got to know this. I don't know that I'm giving anybody revelation today. Hopefully I am giving you a reminder. Your life is not going to be, I know sometimes like since the shack, remember that book? The shack? Everybody had this idea that getting saved was going to go to like I'm going to go to a cottage in the countryside next to a babbling brook and I'm going to spend time in sweet serenity with Papa. Well good luck with that. Good luck with that. Are we reading the same Bible? Did you read about Abraham that heard a voice from the sky that said sell everything, walk away from everything and then follow me in a direction you don't even know where you're going to go? Do we remember that? Do we remember King David with a few stones standing up in front of a giant? No, faith is supposed to be safety. Y'all

remember in C.S. Lewis he wrote this, God is not safe, he's good. And this is something that you've got to understand is that a lot of commentators when they talk about this parable, they are saying that Jesus was actually refuting a lot of the doctrines that were being peddled at the time because there was an expectation that the Messiah was going to rise up and create this political uprising and that they were going to rid Israel of the Romans. So they had that expectation like oh when Messiah comes he's going to curate all of these safe spaces for us. But that is not what God is interested in. In and I'm not making light of anybody's trauma But God is not preoccupied with creating safe spaces as much as he is creating holy people So you're gonna go through some stuff just like Elijah, you know Whenever he's standing in front of the 400 prophets of Baal and they're all cutting themselves offering blood Sacrifices and he's standing declaring the Word of God to a demonic evil queen named Jezebel who says I'm about to kill you Are we aware of like what it says in the book? Are you with me? Remember? It says this in a book Remember every single person that wrote in the New Testament eventually was martyred You remember that remember the Apostle Paul he was beaten he was shipwrecked Stabbed stoned Not that like Rocks Like he went through some stuff Peter He's crucified upside down. He didn't consider himself worthy to suffer in the same manner as Jesus People like well John the Beloved made it out not before he was boiled in a pot of oil That's not the path of comfort that I want to take We have to remember that getting involved with God is not safe It's risky. I'm sorry if I'm busting somebody's bubble today, but you need to be reminded of this biblical Reality so that you don't start rebuking God whenever you experience spiritual warfare Because that's what this passage if it teaches us anything It's teaching us that spiritual warfare is real and you should expect to experience it Because there is going to come an hour where the devil is gonna catch you sleeping

But I hate to tell you that but that's what it says right here in verse 25 while his men were sleeping you ain't gonna be On 24 7 365 you're gonna go through some stuff. You're gonna get tired. You're gonna get hungry. You're gonna get angry You're gonna feel lonely You gonna have ups and downs you're gonna be tempted and because you ain't Messiah Emmys gonna get you every now and then you ain't gonna be perfect. I'm sorry to tell you You ain't gonna live perfect. You ain't Jesus You're gonna sin. You're gonna fall short. You're gonna mess up. You're gonna make mistakes You're gonna go through some stuff. You know why cuz devil's real You know why? Cuz hell is real, you know Why cuz the devil is bent on destroying God's good creation And we have plenty of Scripture for it in Luke chapter 4 verse 13 whenever Jesus was tempted in the wilderness The devil departed from him until when an Opportune time. What am I telling you? The devil is very well studied when it comes to human behavior He's been watching for thousands of years This is this is why Paul said let us lay aside Every weight and these sin that so easily besets us notice. It was not plural. He did not say sins Why is that because the devil is the imitator? He's not a creator He can't come up with some new sin to come against you with all he can do is observe your behavior over time and see Oh, that's whenever he wrestles That's whenever she stresses. That's whenever he goes through a hard time is when he gets tired That's whenever he has a hard time when he just when he has breakthrough You know statistically most pastors have a moral failure on Monday oh That was that was too much y'all good Because the devil's watching man. He's waiting for an opportune time Paul said let's lay aside the sin devil can't invent no new sins He just watches and waits on that one sin that he knows he's watched you struggle with in the past It's too real So it's important for us to understand that spiritual warfare is real and there's always going to be spiritual warfare First Peter 5 8 be sober minded be watchful your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour

But there's always a temptation to be surprised whenever we experience spiritual warfare because it messes with our minds and we wonder why in the world would God ever let this happen and And do you see the hint of accusation in the text whenever the servants come to the master and they said we thought you so good seed Isn't this just like Christians that put God on trial when they go through something wait. I thought you were good What are you doing? I thought your nature was good. I thought your character was good. I thought you were kind well-intentioned father If you're so good, what is bad things happen to good people it's right there. It's right there We thought you so good seed God how in the world does the world have weeds in it? If there's all these believers doing so much good while they're weeds If the church is so glorious and incredible and awesome and growing at the at the at the pace that everybody says it Why is there weeds and and then here's here's what you know, Jesus is the enemy Period point-blank full stop. Here's why you having them problems the devil All right, and I'm not like and I'm not like the person that considers everything I do dumb the devil Like I'm not that part somehow you just need to mature and make healthy choices You know, you know to me Like I know if I go eat fast food, I'm gonna have a stomachache afterward But every now and then The temptation I Pull into McDonald's This is Garrett, he's a health coach. He's like don't do it. I Get a McChicken It's probably the worst thing you can get Maybe you're gonna you know, it's like my granddad. You said you're gonna make a mistake make a good one, you know, so Hit that McChicken one time, you know, and it's like about 30 minutes later. I'm like You know what I don't do it's the devil But that's what some Christians do when it comes they go through some tough stuff and it's like bro You literally knew not to do that. You did it anyway You were abuking the devil you can rebuke yourself

You rebuke in the devil you can rebuke yourself I Saw this guy on the internet this week He was like this is the thing I do to myself to trick my brain Whenever I'm tempted to do something I don't want to do I look in the mirror and I say boy you're a grown man And I was like, yo that actually hits and it works anytime. I don't want to get up early You know what? I say myself you a grown man. You really are gonna be a grown man Can't get up at 5 a.m. To pray you a grown man. I'm like, all right. Yeah, I'm about to get up I'm telling you try it Man I really want McDonald's boy. You a grown man. You tell me a grown man. Can't can't say no to a McChicken I'm a grown man. You gotta say it with some bass in your voice. I'm a I'm a grown man, you know Are you can't you I can't stay off the Explorer page Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I knew I was gonna get somebody with that are you a grown man You can't manage where your thumb goes Come on I'm trying to help somebody today because I want you to know yes warfare is real Spiritual warfare is real temptation is real temptation and sin are not the same thing If that was the case Then Jesus would have been sinful because the Bible says that he was tempted in every way and yet he was without sin So you're gonna go through temptation But when you're tried when you're tested when you're tempted our response has to be I'm aware of the fact that warfare is real and I declined to answer the door Warfare is real and that's the answer if you want to know why does bad things happen? You can refer to this passage right here You can refer to this passage right here there may be other responses, but this scripture at least speaks to that response The devil we live in a fallen world with fallen systems where demons are afoot and principalities and powers run amok It's real. I Don't know who needs to be taught this it is real I realized as a pastor in East Nashville a long time ago I stopped telling people that I did not believe them when I asked them about where they went to church and they said I'm

Not religious, but I am spiritual and I would think You know what I realized after a little bit they're not lying to me They are spiritual. It's not about whether or not they're spiritual. It's about what spirit they're in relationship with Because warfare is real and the devil will masquerade as an angel of light Come on over here. You don't need to do all that stuff. You need to do that Jesus stuff that Bible stuff Holy stuff, you don't do that. You get the same rewards going about it a different way. No, you cannot Like it or not. We are at war and the devil is gonna try and attack you All right. Here's the last thing I want to say we're gonna we're gonna we are not to uproot the weeds This is the response and and I wish I had more time because I'd dive deeper into this But we are not to uproot the weeds is what Jesus said and I know it's frustrating Because the presence of weeds can be so annoying when you look at it the way And you see the presence of evil. There is a natural inclination to say I'm gonna do something about that and you should and You should Make a difference change the world Shake nations write history. That's what we're all about around here This reminds me a little bit about one like whenever Jesus said the poor you're always gonna have with you He said that but does that mean that we should not feed the poor? Of course not we go and we bless the poor in the same way He's saying the weeds are always going to be in the world Does that mean that we should not try to make a difference? Of course not we go and we try to make a difference but we do it with an understanding that we will never be able to rid the world entirely of weeds and In fact focusing on that too much will actually cause more damage than it will be a blessing Are you are you sure you ready for this? Because see if you really study the agriculture of this particular weed it looks Exactly the same as wheat until it fully matures The exact same you can google it. You can look it up. It's like it's like Imposters of wheat it looks the exact same. It's a weed it grows up It looks the same but here's what happens if you start trying to rip up those weeds out of the field Then the roots they're all

entangled with one another with the wheat and then you end up ripping the wheat out with the weeds and The weeds actually have poison in them. And so then they end up causing the whole field to be soiled And so what is Jesus telling us don't get distracted on your assignment? Thinking that your purpose is to rid the whole world of all the weeds because it's never going to happen It doesn't mean that you shouldn't do good, but don't get distracted thinking that it's possible in your own strength Well, I'm gonna run for office and when I do I'm gonna you know Take this seat and I'm gonna rid Tennessee of all the weeds. No you ain't You are you with me and too much as I shouldn't have said anything about politics Because there's people thinking like man, you know, it ain't the book it ain't the preaching of the word It ain't the church. It ain't Jesus politics, man. If you just if you just do the right thing in politics, man We're gonna get all the weeds out. No you ain't Man we start some nonprofits man. We just do that. We'll get all no you're not You you can actually get distracted from the Great Commission Trying to get all the weeds out of the field. You've stopped preaching the gospel and you're just doing something different Is that Is that listen I should be a missionary in in the poorest country in the world at the time How many people that I see come over and get distracted? We're supposed to be preaching the gospel and they're like now let's just you know feed them lunch Well, let's feed them lunch then preach the gospel Or preach the gospel then feed them lunch But we cannot just focus on the flesh and call it Christian mission Because this has to do with the spirit man, we ain't unicef with the church and I got no problems with unicef we work with them But we're the church We're coming to pull souls out of hell man to pull souls out of depravity To pull people out of depression and anxiety and to pray for their physical body for them to be healed of their sickness So so making your whole goal like man, I'm gonna get all the weeds no, you're not Jesus said that's his goal. He said that's my goal. I'm gonna get all the weeds out of the field Jesus said that's his job He's gonna get all the weeds out at harvest time, but it's not gonna happen in your time No matter how much you want to do it. You're not the separator

You just got to understand that I am planted where I am planted on purpose and I might be surrounded by weeds I may be surrounded by people who are possessed by demons. I may be surrounded by people who are addicted to drugs I may be surrounded by people who curse me I May be surrounded by people who gossip against me but but I'm wheat and I am maturing in this field that God calls the world and Ultimately, he has designed this process to become where where all of us come up There's a separation and then I step into the kingdom of my father and then I will shine like the glory of the Sun So, let me encourage you sorting seeded season is on the way and in the end the kingdom wins and then secondly is A promise that we'll share in God's glory The best connection to this verse aside from one in the Old Testament from the book of Daniel speaking of the end of days The word the best Greek word is actually used in the story of the Mount of Transfiguration So whenever Jesus is telling us here's here's the destination you gonna come to a place this my kingdom We're the same glory that I experienced on the Mount of Transfiguration is the same glory That you're going to experience at the end of the age This is where we're headed the glory that I showed Peter James and John on the mountain is the glory that I am giving To you the wheat are gonna do more church than just get by The wheat are gonna do more church than just survive the field the wheat are to become glorious That is what we are on our way to but we must stay planted and continue in our Assignment remember Jesus is committed to removing all of the evil from the world and that's what we see in this parable But not only that Jesus is committed to glorifying his own children. Let's stand to our feet and pray I Pray today in Jesus name that for some of us there was some revelation today from the Word of God and if not new revelation perhaps a holy reminder of Your call and your assignment to stay planted exactly where God has you As We're praying today, I want you to remember that and take heart as we're praying receive hope know that you're called by God Called by God to not only be his child But to be on assignment with him and he trusts you he saved you he set you free and he trusts you Lord We say thank you today for your word. Thank you today for the announcement of your kingdom

Thank you today for what you are doing in our lives We rejoice in you in Jesus name and the church said Amen Oh to you. Oh lead me. Oh lead me. One more time. And lead me to the cross. Where your love poured out. Bring me to my knees. Lord I lay me down. And rid me of myself I belong to you. Oh lead me. Oh lead me. Oh lead me. Oh lead me. Oh lead me. Oh lead me. Oh lead me. Oh lead me. Lead me. To the cross. We say yes and amen today Lord. We rejoice in your victory. We say thank you for what you've done for each and every one of us through the cross of Calvary. We are grateful for your body that was broken and your blood that was

poured out. That covers all of our sins. That purifies us. That makes us holy and righteous before you. We say thank you today for the gift. The promise of the Father that is the Holy Spirit. Who has come and given us a down payment on eternity. Thank you for taking up residence within us God. We rejoice in who you are and what you've done. And we look upon you today and we receive our hope. We receive strength. We receive patience. We receive endurance to continue to stay planted in the field of the world. Though it gets hard and though we experience warfare. We know where our help comes from. And we cling to you today. Savior. King of kings and Lord of lords. We know who we follow. And because you've given us identity we can stand before you today and say we know who we are. In Jesus name and the church said amen, amen, amen.
