The Power of Words

Good morning, my name is Jill Brown. Glad to be with you today. And we just, we miss y'all, we love y'all, and we pray. Today I'm going to be speaking on words. You know, there's power in the tongue. In James 1, 5, it tells us the tongue is a little member, but it boasts great things. And it says in James 3, 9, and 10, we bless God, but we can turn around and curse men. The next verse says, my brethren, these things ought not to be so. Now, when it says brethren, it's talking to the Christians. So it's talking to you and I, and saying we need to watch what we say. Psalms 1914 says, let the words of my mouth and a meditation of my heart be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer. I use that many times as a prayer for my children, and now I use it for myself too. So that is a good scripture that you can take and learn, memorize. How many times has your mouth got you in trouble? I know it's got me in trouble before. But once the words go forth out of our mouth, we can't retract them, we can't take them back. And you can apologize, and I'm sure that many of you have. I know I've apologized before for things that I maybe shouldn't have said. And I bet some of y'all listening right now, things have been spoken when you were a child, and they still hurt today. But I'm going to tell you something that God heals. God can heal those memories. God can take away even the words that was spoken. And it says in Matthew 12, 36, that we will give an account of the words that we speak. It says, but I tell you on the day of judgment, people will give an account of very careless and useless words and every idle word that men shall speak. Proverbs 21, 23 says, whoever guards his mouth and his tongue keeps his soul from trouble. Don't you want to keep your soul from trouble?

We have enough problems without adding to them. Proverbs 13, 3, he that keeps his mouth keeps his life. And he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction. It's real easy to say what we want to say. But is it going to be beneficial? You can't just open your mouth and let words fly out. There was an example that when I went through a defensive driving course one time, the instructor was talking about how a policeman had pulled over this car and was given, the passenger wasn't wearing a seatbelt. But because she was an adult, the policeman was going to give her the ticket. However, the driver got upset and started arguing with the policeman. He goes, well, fine, then I'll give you the ticket. And, you know, so when someone, when a police pulls you over, that's not the time to argue. The time to argue is when, get your point across is when you go to court and you talk in front of a judge. And let the judge make that analogy with, I mean, make that whatever needs to happen, he will say. You know, sometimes things are better left unsaid. God is our judge and he will repay. Romans 12, 19 says, dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the scriptures says, I will take vengeance. I will repay them, says the Lord. Some people you can talk until you're blue in the face and they're not going to change their mind about what they think. Even though you show them truth, they're not going to change their mind. But what we do have power over is our tongue, things that we say. We have that power to keep our mouth shut or to open it up. What do we want to do? If we keep speaking negative words, that's what's, nothing's going to change. That's what's going to happen. But, you know, if we start speaking the word of God, the word of God is truth. If we start speaking the word of God, we're going to start seeing a change.

Proverbs 18, 21 says, death and life are in the power of the tongue. Galatians 6, 7 says, whatsoever man sows, that shall he reap. So if we're going to sow good things, we're going to let our mouth say good things, then things are going to start changing. The word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword. So our tongues can be used for good. We can speak life into our situations, Mark 11, 23, that says, whosoever says unto this mountain, be that removed and cast into the sea. And don't doubt in your heart, but believe those things which you say shall come to pass. You shall have whatsoever you say. Three different times in that passage, it says, you shall have whatever you say, as long as it's according to the word of God. That's the main thing, is find out whatever your situation is. Find out whether scriptures that go along with that and start quoting them and start believing that those things are going to change. God's word. or speak God's word over your situation, don't think your situation is impossible. Because Matthew 19, 26 says, with men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible. So your situation is not impossible, although it may look impossible. There's many impossible situations that I faced, but you know what, when I started quoting God's word, and when I started saying, you know what, I believe that things are gonna start changing, I have to change.

I have to watch what this tongue says, and I gotta say, this tongue needs to be speaking the word of God. And 1 Peter 2, 9 says, but we're a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people, that we should show forth the praises of him who had called us out of darkness to his marvelous light. Start praising God, because praises is what's gonna bring you out. It's not the problem, it's not the negative talk, it's not what we can say back to someone that said something hurtful to us, that we can try to hurt them back. God's gonna take care of them. What we need to do is what we speak, what we say, it needs to go along with the word of God. Hebrews 4, 12 said, the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword. So God's word will accomplish what we can't. When we leave things to God, he can work much faster than we can, and he can get things done on our behalf, things that we couldn't do, or things that we thought wouldn't happen. Does your situation there,

it looks impossible. Maybe you've had a life sentence or maybe something is going on. God can change, God can do anything, but we need to work on ourselves and what we're speaking. So Isaiah 55, 10 and 11 says, just as the rain comes down and the snow from heaven and doesn't return back up, it stays here to give seed to the sower and bread to the eater. It says, so shall my word be that goes forth out of my mouth. It shall accomplish that which I please and it shall prosper in the place that I've sent it. So when we quote God's word, God's word, our words may come back empty. They may not accomplish much, but we start quoting God's word, it accomplishes much and it's not gonna return void. You know, you probably went in the past, went to a movie theater. When you go in there, they stamp the ticket. You know, well, that voids it. You can never go back to that movie again because it's stamped and it's voided. Well, God's word never returns void. It is gonna be good from the day

that it was written until the day that we die. His word, his word is everlasting. His word is life. His word is truth. And we've just got, we've got to do that. We've got to go by his word. Start speaking the word, watch what happens. First of all, you're gonna feel hopeful, gonna feel faith. Even if you don't see, Bible says we walk by faith, not by sight. So it's not what things, what we see changing. We may not see anything change right away, but you know what? We're gonna start changing. When we, there is a book I read a while back called The Tongue, A Creative Force. And it is, it's what you speak back to Mark 11, 23. If you say in this mountain, if you say in this problem, be that removed and cast into the sea. Don't doubt in your heart, but believe those things which you say shall come to pass. You're gonna have what you say, because it's the word of God. You know, the word of God is truth. It's not gonna return. It's not gonna come back empty. It's not gonna come back void, but it's gonna accomplish. And that is what we need to think on.

Watch your words. Start, watch your life start changing when you start speaking the word of God. Jesus loves you. He has a great plan for your life. Your life's not over. You may think, well, this is the end. My life's over. I'm just giving up. No, no, never give up, because there's always hope in Jesus Christ. And he loves you. And he's gonna make a way where there seems to be no way.
