I will sing of Your great love. I will praise Your name. Amen. Welcome to the church. I have a question. What happens if I don't consider myself such a bad person and they introduce me to Jesus? What happens if your story, about which my wife, Flor, shared, what happens if your story is not one of looting, being a swindler, a madman, or, as a prophetess would say, a two-legged filthy rat? What happens if you are not someone who is sleeping around? You can't show me any motorcycle you've smoked this past week. You never took drugs in your life. You grew up in this thing. The question is, what happens to you? Because the message we receive, which is correct, by the way, is that Jesus came into the world to die for sinners. Can anyone say amen to that? Yes or no? The question is, I insist, what happens if you don't consider yourself so sick or so sinful? What happens to you? And that is the question that will answer one of the most important conversations,

I think, of the New Testament. A conversation that Jesus has with a man who wasn't so bad. A man who, I insist, didn't have a criminal history. He couldn't tell you that he was in jail. He couldn't tell you that he was once taken to the police station to check to see if he was drugged or intoxicated with alcohol. And yet Jesus will tell him, even if you don't consider yourself so bad, you can't know me or my Father unless you are born again. So I want you to go to that story with me today. If you brought the Bible to the Word of God, I want you to lift it up. Lift the Bible up. And what do we say together? This is the Word of God. If you brought it from the Catholic or Christian Church, you will find it in the same place. John. The Gospel of John is the fourth book. I'm going to read a book in the New Testament, and we're going to go to chapter 3. Chapter 3. While you're going to Juan, chapter 3, for those who are here at home today, part of our family, by the way, I greet all the people in our family who are watching us through the cameras, who are watching us in the prisons. God bless you. Give them a big round of applause for those who are joining us. If today, at some point, while we're talking about the word of God, and you say, this is the first time I've been here, or, you know, I've been here, you know, but today God really spoke to me, and I want someone to call me, I want to get connected to the church, Pastor, I come here alone, I come here alone. Ok, this is what the scripture says, I'm reading from John chapter 3, only five verses, and you're going to see it on your screen. It says this, I'll tell you the truth, unless you're born again, you can't see the kingdom of God. Boom. What do you mean, says Demo? How can an older man go back to his mother's womb and be born again? And Jesus answered him, I'll tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God if they're not born of water and the Spirit. That's it. I'm going to tell you how to understand. I'm going to bring you with me to my office, and I want you to see with me how I understand this conversation. Here are four scenes, I'm going to tell you one at a time. If you're taking notes, take them, and if you don't like taking notes because you like paying attention, do it like this. But here are four scenes in this conversation, and this is the name I gave it so it's easy to remember. First scene, Nico Demo, this is Nico Demo. He's a good guy. He's a good guy. He's a good guy. It was a tradition, a tradition of the elders, they told them at that time, that was made to protect you from even approaching a personal disobedience to God. So, for example, a pharisee was going to tell you, you have to wash a specific amount of times in your hands to purify yourself, and thus be able to eat and not offend God. A pharisee was going to tell you, you have to decimate even the chilies you have in your house if you really want God not to be offended by you. However, Jesus says, you worry about so many rules, but what was in my father's heart, you don't do it, you don't know how to forgive, you are resentful, you are insulting, and you don't know, I insist, you don't know what it means to have mercy. So that's why the pharisee comes to us as a kind of insult, you are a hypocrite, etc. However, not all pharisees were like that. To be a pharisee meant to be consumed by the desire to study the Word of God. In that moment, the Word of God, if you brought your Bible, and you just grabbed the Old Testament, that was the Word of God at that moment, the Hebrew Bible. These guys spent their whole lives studying. I don't know much about Nicodemus, but from what I've been told, I can tell you the following. From a young age, they saw him as a very smart guy. Unlike, for example, the disciples of Jesus, who ended up being fishermen and carpenters, because they weren't necessarily the smartest. However, some who were discovered as men,

this guy is brilliant, brilliant in his head, this guy. And they put him under a tutor, a tutor who taught the Bible all his life. And these guys spent years and years memorizing, memorizing, memorizing, eating the Bible. That was a pharisee. And really, most of them weren't hypocrites, at least consciously. Most of them really wanted to obey God. They wanted to obey God. And they had all this list of rules that I just mentioned. Nicodemus, at the time of this conversation, I can tell you that he was between 50, 60, or 70 years old. And now I'm going to tell you why that is. Que es muy diferente a lo que le dice Nicodemo acá. Nicodemo está diciendo, yo no creo que estás endemoniado, yo creo que Dios está con vos, ¿OK? ¿Estamos bien hasta ahí, sí o no? Entonces, lo primero que está pasando acá es, encontrás a un Nicodemo, fuerte el aplauso para todas estas 20,000 personas que están viniendo acá, que se bautizaron los acompañados. ¿Sabes por qué le doy fuerte el aplauso? Porque de repente vi que todo el mundo estaba mirando para allá. Así que. Entonces, lo primero que acá veo es esto. Nicodemo es el hombre sin romper. Ustedes sí. ¿Por qué no nos aliamos y hacemos que la gente me conozca, right? Eso es lo que yo me estoy esperando. Jesús le respondió, te digo algo. Si no nacés de nuevo, te vas al infierno. Eso es lo que le está diciendo, right? No puedes ver el reino de Dios.

Significa, no conoces a mi padre y nunca vas a estar con Dios. Vas a estar lejos de Dios para siempre. Hay gente acá que dice que yo soy demasiado duro y que no sé recibir elogios, right? Bro, ¿y Jesús? Jesús cuts through the fluff y le dice, yo te voy a decir algo. No quiero perder tu tiempo, no quiero que pierdas el mío. Si tu vida no vuelve a comenzar, vos no solamente no conoces a mi papá. No conoces a mi padre, sino que vas a estar para siempre lejos de mi padre. A menos que nazcas de nuevo, no puedes ver el reino de Dios. ¿Vos te imaginás alguna conversación con Jesús así? Si, che, pará, pará. ¿Dije algo malo? ¿Será que el maestro está con indigestión que me trató así? ¿Qué dije? Solamente le dije que estaba a favor de él. Le dije que I like him. ¿Qué más querés veniendo de mí? Él no sabe el esfuerzo que a mí me toma como uno de los jefes de la iglesia. Venir a decirle eso y Jesús le dice, I don't care. Y voy a la hondura de tu corazón. Si vos espiritualmente no volvés, no te rompes y no volvés a comenzar, vos te digo algo, no vas a ver a mi padre jamás. No vas a entrar al reino. ¿Y cómo es que Jesús de repente puede decir así? Bueno, Juan te da una pista y es así como se lee la Biblia.

Tenés que leer un poquito más que el versículo que estás tratando de entender. Si vos vas dos versículos anteriores, capítulo 2, versículo 24, 25, dice, pero Jesús no confiaba en ellos porque conocía la naturaleza humana. No hacía falta que nadie le dijera cómo es el ser humano. Jesus is much more than a prophet or a teacher. Jesus is the eternal Son of God, made man, who looks you in the eyes and says, I don't need you to fill me with compliments to know who you are. I can see right through you. And you don't know my Father. Are you telling the doctor in the Old Testament? Yes, yes. You don't know me. So, this is the second scene. We go to the grain, and when Jesus goes to the grain, he says, You don't know me. If there's no beginning, now I'm going to see what it means to be born again, you're not going to see the kingdom of God. So, that brings us to the third scene, which is, the teacher made a mistake in person. Maybe. Because Nicodemus says in verse 4, What do you mean? Nicodemus exclaimed. How can an older man return to his mother's womb and be born again? What do you mean? This is not what it looks like. This is not what it looks like.

At first, it looks like Nicodemus is totally lost, bro. Jesus obviously says to him, You have to start again, right? You have to be born again. That's something of the heart. Are you with me this morning or tonight? It's something of the heart. But Nicodemus didn't seem to understand a thing of what Jesus was saying. And he says, wait, wait, wait. How can I, a bearded man, enter his mother's womb again? How can I get back in there? How can I be born again? So, at first glance, it looks like Nicodemus doesn't understand. He's lost. Aaron Byatt. I don't buy it. I don't think he understood. I think he understood very well. And I'm going to tell you two quick reasons. The first reason is that Nicodemus knew, remember, he was a doctor in the old, what? In the Old Testament, in the Bible. He knew very well that the Old Testament promised that one day the Messiah would come and that God would start again the heart of his people. I'm going to read you one of the most well-known verses. It's in Ezekiel, chapter 36, which says this.

It was one of the promises that, I can tell you for sure, Nicodemus understood. Then I will water them with pure water, and they will be clean. I will wash away their filth, and they will stop worshipping idols. I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take away that stubborn stone heart, and I will give you a tender and receptive heart. I will put my spirit in you, so that you will follow my commandments, and you will be sure to obey my commandments. That's it. Nicodemus knew that. What do you think? Did he know that prophecy, yes or no? It's obvious for Nicodemus that Jesus is referring to that. Jesus is saying, I came here to fulfill the prophecy. What Jesus calls a new birth is to be clean, according to what Ezekiel says, to receive a new heart, to have a tender heart that receives the word of God, and to receive the Holy Spirit. That is to be born again. How can it be that Nicodemus doesn't understand? It's obvious that Jesus is talking about that prophecy. I will give you another proof that Nicodemus was not an ignorant.

The later rabbinical teachings had something, and I picked this up in the Babylonian Talmud a few years later, in which you see specifically, there I put all the Hebrew writing, in case you can read Hebrew, but I put there the phrase that interests me the most, that you understand. The rabbis, the teachers of the law, later would say, someone who becomes a Jew is like a new born child. Okay, hold on. So the teachers of the law did have the term of being born again, or being a new child, or being made again. The difference is that they would say, do you know who is born again? Those who are not Jews, and those who want to become Jews. They are the ones who are born again. Are you tracking? So, if Nicodemus already knew this term, if Nicodemus knew that this was in the Bible, in the Old Testament, which he had memorized in large parts, and Nicodemus also possibly had already heard the idea that someone who is not a Jew,

to become a Jew, had to be born again, or to begin again, or to be born again, why does Nicodemus seem like he doesn't understand? Look at me. Because Nicodemus says, I understand the idea of being born again, but that's not for me. Not for me. No, you are tracking. How do you expect me to? The problem with Nicodemus is not the idea of being born again. The problem with Nicodemus, what is it? It's that he doesn't need to be born again. According to him. I don't need to be born again. What are you talking about? I am the one who teaches. I am the teacher of Israel. I don't need to be born again. They are. I have helped others to be born again. I teach those who are born and want to become Jews. I am already a teacher. What do you mean to say to me? I'm not a thief. I'm not a drug addict. I grew up in the church. I don't need to break. What do you want? There it is. Nicodemus, the man without breaking. I don't need any of that. I'm not the one who ruined his family. You know, it's his fault. It's her fault. I'm not the one who did all of this. I'm not an ignorant. You know, when I met Christ some years ago, 20 long years ago, God put that fire in my heart of being crazy about Jesus

and spending my life talking to other people about Jesus of Nazareth. Listen to this. God has given me, by His grace, the opportunity to talk to thousands and thousands and thousands of people about Jesus. Not necessarily in churches, but in trains, in neighborhoods, in universities, in places where no one saw me. Glory to God. I love that. And you know, once someone asked me, hey, have you preached about Jesus in the lower neighborhoods? Yes. Have you spoken to drug addicts? Yes. Have you spoken to people who are drunk? Yes. Have you spoken to people who are literally talking to you here in the face with the aroma of marijuana and telling you all their sexual feats from the weekend before? Yes, yes. Have you spoken to all of them about Jesus? Yes. They are difficult, aren't they? They are the most complicated, aren't they? What do you think? Do you think they are the most complicated? Those who are watching us from prison, do you think they are the most complicated? Do you know who is the most complicated? You, the one who never broke. The one who came all his life to the church. The one who knows the Bible. The one who can quote me biblical things. The one who says, yes, yes, I understand, I like Jesus, I'm not against him, but I don't need him. They are the ones who need him. You are the hardest one. And I was that man too. I can't tell you, in my life I smoked nothing. I never smoked absolutely nothing. The drug doesn't even tempt me. It hasn't cost me prostitutes, and yet I am a lost man who without a new birth will never see the Father. This is what Jesus is saying. And this is what leads us, Nick, to the last scene, which is, without breaking, you don't enter. Jesus answered him, says the text. You can come up, Nick. Whenever you're ready. I mean, you can come in 20 minutes if you want to. He's one of my best friends. We're not fighting. Jesus answered him. I'll tell you the truth. It's like he's saying the same thing as before, but I'll add a little information. No one can enter the kingdom of God if they're not born of water and of the Spirit. So what I need to know is what it means to be born of water and of the Spirit. I go back to Ezekiel 36, which Nicodemus knew. The prophecy of Ezekiel 36 says, Then I will sprinkle you with pure water, and you will be clean, and I will put my Spirit in you. There it is. Being born of water and of the Spirit is the same in that text. What does it mean?

It means that God breaks you, and it means that you leave that argument of, I'm not as bad as you. It means that you stop comparing yourself to your religious metric, which I don't know where you got it from, with the one who, according to you, is worse than you. It means that you say, Bro, maybe I didn't do all this, but I'm lost without Jesus, and if I don't break in front of my King, I'll never see the Father. Being born of water and of the Spirit, how do I, Pastor, how do I be born again, or have that cleanliness, have the Holy Spirit? Look, the miracle of the new birth is something that only God can produce. I can't. How do I make you be born again? What do I do? I clap and blow. It's not something physical. It's something spiritual. And it's something that only the Holy Spirit can produce. For you to be born again, for you to start again, for everything to start spiritually again. It's a miracle of the Holy Spirit, and I can't manipulate it. It's not something that you can go through life and say, well, I hope that if I do this, and I do this, and I do this, and I do this, I hope to end up being born again.

That's not how this works. It's a miracle, but what I can tell you is this. This miracle is accompanied by only one thing. Look at me, look at me. This miracle is accompanied by only one thing. That you look at Christ in your heart, and that you say, Man, yo tal vez no me considero tan malo, tal vez no soy el estafador, tal vez no soy el prostituto o prostituta, tal vez no soy el que haya arruinado todo, tal vez yo no soy el abusador, pero Señor, si vos no me perdonas, si la muerte de Jesús no me limpia, si su resurrección no es mi resurrección, I'm dead, y necesito tu amor, tal cual, igual como aquel estafador necesito tu amor, yo necesito volver a casa, tal como el hijo pródigo, también hay un hijo mayor, el hijo mayor se puede quedar fuera de la casa, porque nunca entendió lo que significaba el amor del padre, yo necesito también a casa, no importa lo que ella haya hecho, y si no me crees, fíjate que Juan mismo te lo está diciendo, versículo 16, ahora todo esto tiene sentido, pues Dios amó tanto al mundo, que envió a su único hijo para que todo el que crea en él no se pierda, sino que tenga vida eterna, escucha, Dios no envió a su hijo al mundo para condenar al mundo, sino para salvarlo por medio de él, y quiero que me digas amén a esto, no hay condenación para todo aquel que cree en él, amén o no, escúchame Nicodemo, escúchame conocedora de la Biblia, escúchame good girl, escúchame good guy, escúchame memorizador de las palabras de Dios, escúchame tradición católico cristiana, si vos no nacés de nuevo, si vos no te entregás al amor de Dios y no recibís el perdón de papá, nunca vas a entrar al reino, pero tengo buenas noticias, Dios envió a Jesús al mundo también por vos, Dios envió a su hijo al mundo por un Nicodemo tal como el que está sentado en tu silla, pero no vas a entrar al reino sin romperte, quiero que te pongas de pie, líderes pueden pasar, cerrá tus ojos ahí donde estás, tanto los que están acá en casa como los que están viéndonos vía online, Nicodemo, Mr. Religion que está escuchándome ahora, Mrs. Religion, doña cristiana, doña evangélica, don católico, escúcheme bien, vos podés tener Biblia, con los ojos cerrados, nadie mirando, vos podés tener Biblia, podés tener prestigio, podés tener

respeto, podés tener iglesia, pero si no tenés a Cristo como tu Mesías, no vas a ver al Padre jamás. Y ahora el Espíritu Santo, como siempre, ama hacer el milagro del New Birth, del nuevo nacimiento. Y la forma en la que vos tomás parte y acompañás ese milagro, es abriendo tus manos y diciendo, yo siempre pensé que alguien necesitaba más que el Señor Jesús, tu salvación, que yo. Yo siempre asumí que I wasn't that bad, que yo no era la pecadora, que yo no era el pecador. Decirle, yo soy Nicodemus. Creo, Señor Jesús, que tu Padre te envió al mundo para morir por pecadores, and now I get it, soy yo también.
