God and Government

In Romans 13, Paul teaches that every governing authority is established by God to maintain civil order, punish evildoers, and serve as His minister for the good of the people. Believers are called to recognize, respect, and willingly submit to those in authority, rendering taxes, honor, and respect where they are due. Yet Scripture also makes clear that when human authority demands what God forbids, the follower of Christ must answer as Peter and the apostles did: "We must obey God rather than men." Rooted in the command to love our neighbor as ourselves, the Christian's response to government becomes a matter of caring for and protecting others without enabling wrongdoing, raising the question of whether we are truly obeying God in how we relate to those He has placed over us.
