Pero cuando yo obedezco a Dios, en tu mente decís, thumbs, el cielo me da, thumbs up. Significa que todo me va bien, you know, no hay enfermedad que pueda entrar a mi casa, mi matrimonio va a ser mágico, mis hijos me van a obedecer, no me van a hacer quedar mal delante del resto de la iglesia, etcétera, etcétera. I'm reading Genesis chapter 39, verse 1, you can read it with me, and I'm going to underline some parts that I think you need to know to understand what's going on here. Verse 1 of chapter 39 says, which I, by the way, titled the ending that we all expected, it says, When the Ishmaelite merchants took José to Egypt, they sold him to Potiphar, an Egyptian officer. Potiphar was a captain of the pharaoh's guard, king of Egypt. And the Lord was with José. I want you to say with me, the Lord was with José. Okay, the author wants you to understand that. Now, let's go back. That's why he was successful in everything while he served in the house of his Egyptian master. Potiphar, I remind you that Potiphar is a male name, okay? Potiphar noticed and realized that the Lord was with José. Again, the same phrase, the Lord was with José. And he was successful in everything he did.

This pleased Potiphar, who soon named José his personal assistant. He put him in charge of his house and all his possessions. Verse 5. And from the day that José was in charge of the house and the properties of his master, the Lord began to bless Potiphar's house because of José. All the affairs of the house went well and the crops and the animals prospered. For Potiphar gave José total and complete administrative responsibility over all his possessions. And with José in charge, Potiphar did not worry about anything except that he was going to eat. That's the text of the first scene. I titled it, The End We All Expected. When you start reading that part, it looks like the end of the whole story, right? Remember, José was sold by his brothers. His brothers were a fratricide that didn't work out. They tried to kill José and it didn't work out. And since they couldn't kill him, they decided to make a little profit and sell him to this sale of slaves, right? So, obviously, you put yourself in José's shoes and you say, well, it looks like God is answering now, right? Because he took me to the house of a man. Obviously, it's God who took me to Potiphar's house, which is in the high spheres of Egyptian politics. It's not a nobody, Potiphar is the captain of the personal guard of the pharaoh, okay?

So, God takes José. No one seems to have regretted my brothers. No one came to look for me. But now God put me in a house and people treat me well. Here people appreciate me for who I am, for what I do. In fact, they appreciate me so much that here people praise José at work several times. First, José would have expected to be a slave in the field, but José seems to be so good that they put him in the house. From being in the house, Potiphar puts him as his personal assistant. And from being a personal assistant, another promotion, and he puts him as number two. Number two. And he says that Potiphar, the only thing Potiphar decided was what? If I eat pupusas or tacos today. That was the only thing Potiphar decided. Everything else, José took care of it. How nice. This is the end of the story. Here it ends, how nice. All my past is left behind. I don't have to heal from my past. It's over, it's over. Now God blessed me. Maybe the dreams he gave me were for me to rule this house. I have a good job. God blessed me. That's the end of my story. Not so fast, cowboy. Not so fast.

Because when God blesses you, and when God gives you success, as obviously it was God who was giving you success, all God's blessings come with a catch. It comes with a small letter. And the catch is this. You think you've already learned everything you should have learned because God blessed you. I've arrived. I've reached my goal. God took care of my enemies, and I already have everything I could have asked God for. And yet, that's not what's going to happen here. This story with Joseph was just beginning. And I'll tell you why this happens. Why does God do that when he gives you success or when he blesses you? At 20 years old, I was part of a tremendous basketball team, right? Me doy vuelta y digo, seguramente van a cambiar alguno de los fracasados de mi equipo, ¿no? Y lo único que escucho de parte de mi coach es, doubt, al banco. Y yo digo, ¿habrá un malentendido?

Yo salgo, ni me miró, no me miró, me cambió por otro. Y me quedé en el banco y pasaron cinco minutos y pasaron diez. Pasó todo el partido. Y nunca más me volvió a meter en el partido. Entonces, un poquito antes de que terminara, yo me acerco detrás y digo, coach, tengo una pregunta. Yo estaba ardiendo, ¿viste? Diciendo, ¿sale todo bien? Como decimos los franceses, c'est fini. Terminó. Se puso la pantalla en negro, viste como en las películas, están los créditos, la música de fondo. Ya terminó esta película. Pablito ya aprendió lo que tenía que aprender. Y el tema es que Dios dice, ¿cómo te lo digo? Vos estás pensando que mi bendición asegura que vos ya creciste en todo lo que vos tenías que crecer. Error. El hecho que yo te esté bendiciendo no significa que yo apruebo todas las cosas que pensas o haces. Y porque Dios es así, eso lleva a José a una segunda escena que yo le intitulé, veamos de qué estás hecho. Dice el texto así, José era un joven muy apuesto y bien fornido. Más o menos para imaginártelo, mira la pantalla y te lo vas a imaginar. Como verás en tu pantalla. Y la esposa de Potifar pronto comenzó a mirarlo con deseos sexuales. Ven y acuéstate conmigo, le ordenó ella. Ahora vamos a ver esa estrategia un poco violenta de la esposa de Potifar. Pero José se negó. Mire, le contestó, mi amo confía en mí y me puso a cargo de todo lo que hay en su casa. Nadie aquí tiene más autoridad que yo. Él no me ha negado nada con excepción de usted porque usted es su esposa.

¿Y cómo podría yo cometer semejante maldad? ¿Sería un gran pecado contra Potifar? No. ¿Qué dice? Ahora voy a volver ahí. Pero día tras día ella seguía presionando a José, pero él se negaba a acostarse con ella y la evitaba tanto como podía. Cierto día, versículo 11, sin embargo, José entró a hacer su trabajo y no había nadie más allí. Ella llegó, lo agarró del manto y le ordenó, vamos, acuéstate conmigo. Y José se zafó de un tirón, pero dejó su manto en manos de ella al salir corriendo de la casa. Y cuando ella vio que tenía el manto en las manos, pero no tenía... A José llamó a sus siervos y enseguida todos los hombres llegaron corriendo. Miren, dijo ella, mi esposo ha traído aquí a este esclavo hebreo para que nos dejen ridículo. gusta tanto, que es intimidad sin pacto, right? Vamos a acostarnos sin que haya respeto entre los dos y sin que haya ningún compromiso con Dios ni con nadie más. Let's just live together. ¿Qué tiene de malo? Lo más obvio de la escena es, obviamente, él, válgame la redundancia, es la actitud que tiene o la estrategia que utiliza, mejor dicho, la esposa de Potifar. Fíjate que ella utiliza una estrategia que yo llamo la estrategia del sandwich. Ella comienza al principio siendo bastante violenta y ella le dice, acuéstate conmigo. Y al decir, acuéstate conmigo, ella está usando, dice, le ordenó, dice el texto, el versículo 6 al 7, ella está usando o abusando de una autoridad. Ella era la jefa. Entonces, ella utiliza esa autoridad como para decirle, bueno, siervo, venga y hágame lo que yo quiero que usted me haga. Sin embargo, no le funciona. Ahora vamos a ver cuál fue la respuesta de José, que fue fantástica respuesta, profunda. Y ella ahora intenta otra cosa. Dice que ahora, día tras día, versículo 10, ella sigue presionando a José. Es decir, si la tentación de un balazo no funcionó, voy a utilizar la tentación como esa gota que va cayendo en la piedra, poco a poco, hasta que va deformándola. Ella empieza día a día presionando a José. ¿Y cuánto tiempo duró? Cuando vos lees el texto, pareciera como que todo pasó en 10 minutos.

Día tras día posiblemente signifique años. OK. Quiero que me sigas un poquito. Día tras día, tras día, tras día, está mujer diciendo, dale, José. Es una sola vez. Una vez al año no hace. Qué triste que sepan ese dicho y que lo apliquen malamente. Y yo creo que vos te podés poner, yo me pongo en la escena, y es difícil, Che. Ahora voy a decir por qué es tan difícil. Porque una cosa es resistir la tentación violenta que te viene de un golpe. Pero otra cosa es resistirla cuando todos los días se te repite. Porque hay un momento en que mentalmente decís, bueno, ya está, no es tan malo, no es tan malo, no es tan malo. Y ella después de fertilizar la tierra así día tras día, llega un momento en el que estando ellos solos, no por culpa de José, no fue decisión de José, él estaba trabajando, ella lo agarra del manto y vuelve otra vez a la oferta violenta, acóstate, acóstate conmigo. Si toda la vida te llaman inútil, tonto, bueno para nada, nadie te quiere, nadie te respeta. Y digamos que es tu momento para tomarte tu venganza emocional. ¿Ah, no? ¿No soy un don nadie? Mira con quién me acosté. La tentación sexual es mucho más profunda que un tema hormonal. Al final, la tentación estaba ofreciéndole a José sanar de heridas de su pasado. José, ahora estás solo. José, ahora sí te quieren. José, no sos el desechado, rechazado, inútil y tonto. José, mira qué pedazo de mujer se te está ofreciendo, José. Este es tu momento. Y por eso creo yo que este es un momento, es el punto clave en el que. You look at Jose and you see the true colors of this man. You think that the true colors will be seen in the first scene. What was the first scene? All flowers and roses, success, everything is going well. No, no, no, no, no, no. Your true colors are not seen when everything is going well. I know that you want God to prosper everything that you have. Me too, glory to God. But that doesn't show much. When it comes to the formation of your character,

that God fulfills your dreams, has very little value in the kingdom. At the end, where your true colors are seen, is when you are alone, and when now is your opportunity to heal from the things of the past with what Satan offers you. And Satan is offering you a beautiful way out. And also, the access to power, because if you sleep with this woman, maybe this woman speaks well to the Pharaoh, because there was a connection, and maybe you can even fulfill your dreams, and maybe cut some corners here and there, you know? Beautiful, because Joseph prefers to wear his garment than to lose his purity. Look at what verse 9 says. It says, 8 and then 9. Joseph denied. My master trusts in me. He put me in charge of everything in his house. You are his wife. No one has more authority than I do. But this is the question, this is the question in which you can see what material is made, Joseph. Listen to it. How could I commit such a thing? Joseph calls it evil. What this woman says is just a shortcut, it's a good time. Joseph does not change his name simply because he was a victim of his past. Joseph can say, it is true that I could fall, it is true that I could take revenge on my whole family with what you are offering me now.

But evil is evil. And I'm not going to use my history or my past to change the definition of what sin is. That would be what? Evil. But he continues. Because I cannot commit that evil and he says, it would be a great sin against whom? Against whom? Look. I'm going to punch my iPad. It would be a great sin against whom? Against God. So I'm not going to choose not to sleep with you because that would be a great sin against my boss. Although it would be. I'm not going to choose not to sleep with you because maybe I'll lose my job. that I cannot sell him as a treasure to get you. I would not sell my God for anything. That is, my friend, the heart of the disciple of Christ. It is not, do not sin because it will go wrong. Do not fall into adultery or do not do that for the consequences it can bring you. No, no, no, no. Here everything is summarized in one question. Who is more valuable to you? Who? Every time you and I are tempted, there is a theological question at the bottom. Who is God for you? And how much is God worth? What is the price tag? How much would you be willing to sell to God? Joseph says, even if you are a perversely beautiful woman, even if you are offering me to supposedly heal my past, I will not sell you for my God. Can someone tell me amen to this or not? At the end it is a theological question at the bottom. It is always a theological question. And wait, because this is not the strongest thing in the whole story that I am going to tell you today. In the end, the woman is rejected and the turn that usually happens in human beings takes place in her. Passion becomes hatred. And this woman hates Joseph,

but she also realizes that the intelligent woman says, OK. Someone has to die here, by the way, because adultery included capital punishment, as is obvious, I think you can imagine. So the woman says, either he dies, or who? Or I die. So, let him die. And she makes up a tremendous story, a story that, by the way, if you're watching it, hindsight, it doesn't make sense, because he's going to want to rape you and leave you his own clothes. But the thing is that she knows how to make up that story, become a victim. She becomes the woman who has just escaped from a terrible Hebrew slave. Notice that he is no longer Jose, now he is a Hebrew slave, right? And she waits and stays with Jose's tunic until the boss comes, until Potifar comes. And listen to me carefully. Now is when it gets good. This is the highest point of what I'm going to tell you today, of what the word of God has to tell you. When Potifar comes, that's the moment you expect God to save the day. This is the moment when God comes and through a dream tells Potifar, your wife is crazy and she's going to lie to you. Kill her, don't kill him. You expect God to defend the righteous at that moment. I do bad things and I'm going to go wrong, but if I do good things, God is going to sell me. Okay, right.

You're absolutely right, I agree with you. I fit God into this binary ecosystem in which if something bad happens, he punishes, if something good happens, he rewards. Now God has to reward. Jose won the victory of temptation. Jose's heart is strong and firm like gold and he didn't even give up. Wow. Now I hope God comes and saves Jose and guess what happens. And I titled this final scene, Bad Rewarding Obedience. Look at what happens in verse 19. Potifar got angry when I read his wife's story about how Jose had treated her. So he grabbed Jose and put him in jail where the king's prisoners were. And Jose stayed there. What a pain. What a disappointment. And I see disappointment on both sides. First, what a disappointment of the people. First, the servants. Did you see that the servants heard Potifar's wife complaining? Bro, I refuse to believe that the servants grew up the whole story. Because after being in the same house for a long time, you realize who is the crazy one and who is not. But the servants, who could have defended Jose in the hottest moment, what do they do?

I don't know. Maybe it was Jose. And Potifar, who had been like a father to Jose, instead of assuming the best of his son or his servant, assumes the worst. What a disappointment of the people. It seems that Jose is always betrayed by the people he appreciates the most. But there is a worse disappointment. Look at me. It is the disappointment of God. Don't tell me no, or be religious with me, please. You would be deeply disappointed with God. And that God? And the God who defends? And the God who was going to defend my reputation? Where did my reputation go? And my job? And my promotion? And my dream? And my revelation? And being faithful in the intimate? Where is that God? Where? Nowhere to be seen. Missing in action. Or at least that is what it seems. And you know, this brings you to one of the most difficult questions in the whole Bible and in Jose's story. I still have you with me in this final moment, yes or no? And it is this.

Is this how God pays you? When you choose obedience in secret? I believe that Jesus, my Savior, my Messiah, when he spent that last night crying in the Garden of Gethsemane, I believe that Satan came there and whispered this in his human ear. Is this how God pays you? Is this how your God pays you? That's how this works. And in the end, you have to ask yourself something. What do I do if following God's commandments does not yield immediate results? Would you still choose not to sleep with Potiphar's wife? Listen. And what if I tell you, as a disciple of Jesus of Nazareth, that obeying God is beautiful, and that obeying God will bless you. What if I tell you that many times you won't get any of that reward? And what if I told you that choosing what Jesus wants for your life won't give you the fruits we promised you in church? Ten more and you'll have the car of your dreams. Protect yourself sexually until marriage, and your marriage will be magical. And everything we promise, in the end, your obedience ends in a non-result. And now you're left with the debris. So, do you want to follow God or not? And that's the question of the questions. If God didn't reward you, if there's no trophy God gave you, would you still want to follow Christ until the end? If you're still losing your reputation, if people think the worst of you, if God never exalted you, if you never had anything to show that God rewarded you, would you still laugh at God, yes or no? That's the question, and the only question I have for you.

If you're here, Nick, you can come in, if you're here looking for a gospel that promises you an immediate result, if you're with Jesus for what Jesus can give you, I'm going to tell you something, God doesn't work in that binary system of punishment and reward. Because there are people who don't follow God, and it always goes well for them. And there are people who follow Christ and never receive a blessed applause for what He did. And that's why the question I have for you is this, look at me. If everything God had to offer you is the presence of God, would you take it yes or no? Look at what the text says. Joseph is in prison. God doesn't appear to do anything in favor of Joseph. Look at what verse 21 says. What does it say there? The Lord was with Joseph. And if you go to the end of verse 23. The Lord was with him. Unrewarded obedience, huh? I obeyed you all this time. In solitude, I chose to follow Christ. And even so, my hands are empty, and I don't understand or can explain my story. Maybe, and only maybe, the reward was never what He could give you. The reward was Him. Him! Maybe the promise that God always gave is, if you receive Christ, I give you what? Cars? No! How nice if I give you a good car. And how nice if you offer that car to me. The promise was never that you're going to have a business that flourishes. How nice if you have it, glory to God.

The promise was never that all your marriage will always be pink. That everything will be a rainbow in your life. The only promise that Jesus gives you is this. I am with you. And the same God that was in the palace is in prison. Guess what? The obedience was not unrewarded in the end. Joseph is learning to define the reward. And the reward is the presence. The presence of God. What is eternal life? Tell me, what is eternal life? Eternal life is to know the Father and to know His Son, whom the Father sent. That is eternal life. And that's why I ask you to stand up this morning. I ask you to pray. Pray with me, rather. The leaders that are going to minister this morning can come. And in a moment we're going to baptize two people who are here today. Two girls who are here today proclaiming Christ as Lord. Again! We're going to give them time to come.
