Coming to Life: Zephaniah

Zephaniah stands out among the prophets because he provides details about his lineage, tracing his ancestry back to King Hezekiah, a righteous ruler of Judah. By emphasizing his royal lineage, he seeks to lend authority to his prophetic messages. Zephaniah prophesied during the reign of King Josiah, another godly king who initiated a revival among the Israelites. However, he also lived through the reigns of the wicked kings Manasseh and Amon, whose reigns were marked by severe idolatry and violence, setting a grim context for his ministry. Active around 640–620 B.C., Zephaniah called the Southern Kingdom of Judah and its neighbors to repentance, warning them of impending judgment while also sharing promises of future restoration.

In his final chapter, he offers hope, proclaiming that God, a mighty warrior, will delight in His people, restore them, and unify all nations in a glorious future under Christ’s reign.
