Coming to Life: Hosea

We’ve completed the major prophets and are moving into the minor prophets, starting with Hosea. Hosea, whose name means “salvation,” prophesied to the Northern Kingdom of Israel between 785 BC and 725 BC, a time marked by both prosperity and moral decline. His message primarily addresses the rampant sin and idolatry of the Israelites, who, despite being warned, failed to repent. As a result, Assyria would soon conquer Israel and take the people into captivity. Hosea’s book can be divided into sections, with the first focusing on his personal life and his symbolic marriage to a promiscuous woman named Gomer, representing Israel’s unfaithfulness to God.

God uses Hosea’s family to illustrate His relationship with Israel, including names of Hosea’s children that symbolize the nation’s fate: Jezreel (“scattered”), Lo-Ruhamah (“no mercy”), and Lo-Ammi (“not my people”). Despite Israel’s impending judgment, Hosea also foretells their future restoration and God’s unchanging love, promising they will be reclaimed and blessed. The book of Hosea is rich with allusions to Christ, reflecting the themes of unfaithfulness and redemption, and offers a powerful reminder of God’s enduring mercy and commitment to His people.
