Coming to Life: Obadiah

In Genesis, Jacob and Esau, the twin sons of Isaac and Rebekah, represent two nations—Israel and Edom. Despite reconciling, their descendants maintained hostility. Jacob’s descendants formed Israel, while Esau’s became the nation of Edom. The prophet Obadiah’s vision concerns Edom, predicting judgment for their pride and violence against Israel. Obadiah’s prophecy warns that Edom’s mistreatment of God’s chosen people will lead to their destruction, fulfilling God’s promise to protect Israel and judge those who oppose them.

Obadiah’s short yet powerful book emphasizes the dangers of pride and the certainty of divine justice. Edom’s fate serves as a warning to all nations about the consequences of opposing God and His people. The prophecy was ultimately fulfilled when Edom was wiped out after Jerusalem’s destruction in 70 AD. The book concludes with a promise of Israel’s deliverance and the coming of God’s kingdom, symbolizing hope and restoration for God’s people.
