Coming to Life: Zechariah

Imagine being taken captive to a foreign land for 70 years, only to return to a ruined homeland and face discouragement as you rebuild amid opposition. This was the experience of the Israelites, who were encouraged by the prophet Haggai to rebuild the temple. Zechariah, another prophet active during this time, came to inspire them further, emphasizing not just the construction of a building but the importance of living their lives devoted to the Lord. His prophecies began just two months after Haggai’s in 520 B.C., urging the Jews returning to Jerusalem to repent and avoid the mistakes that led to their ancestors’ exile.

Zechariah’s book features eight vivid visions that include imagery such as horsemen and a flying scroll, symbolizing both historical and prophetic themes, including peace brought by Persia and future eternal peace. He also delivers messages about a humble king entering the city on a donkey and a rejected shepherd, prophecies that Christians recognize as fulfilled in Jesus. The book highlights God’s promises to pour out His Spirit, fight for His people, and return in glory. With numerous references to the Messiah, Zechariah is often seen as a “mini-Isaiah” and is categorized among apocalyptic literature, encouraging the people to live faithfully and obediently in anticipation of the Messiah’s imminent arrival and the full realization of God’s promises.
