Coming to Life: Mark

The book of Mark is the second gospel in the New Testament, authored by John Mark, who, though not one of the 12 disciples, played a significant role in the early church. Mark was closely associated with key figures like Paul, Barnabas, and Peter, and some traditions even suggest that events like the Last Supper took place at his mother’s house. Unlike Matthew, which was written for a Jewish audience, Mark’s gospel was directed toward Gentiles and focuses heavily on the actions of Jesus, highlighting His miracles and portraying Him as a man of urgent purpose.

Mark’s gospel begins not with the birth of Jesus but with His baptism and rapid succession of His early ministry acts, emphasizing Jesus’ active and powerful mission. Mark often uses the word “immediately” to convey a sense of urgency in Jesus’ actions, with nearly half of the gospel dedicated to miracles. He also highlights the necessity of the cross and the cost of discipleship, showing that followers of Jesus will face persecution. Despite similarities with Matthew and Luke, Mark offers a unique perspective by concentrating on Christ’s deeds over His teachings.
