Coming to Life: John

The book of John stands out among the gospels due to its unique focus and deep theological insights. Written around 95 AD, likely while John was in Ephesus, it highlights the close relationship between Jesus and John, who was one of Jesus’ closest friends and the last surviving apostle. Unlike the synoptic gospels, John emphasizes the spiritual aspects of Jesus’ identity and mission. He opens with the profound declaration that Jesus is the Word, setting the foundation for understanding the Trinity and Christ’s eternal nature. John’s gospel contains seven “signs” and “I AM” statements, focusing on the deeper spiritual meanings behind Jesus’ miracles and teachings.

John’s account is notable for its distinct content, including unique events like the raising of Lazarus, and detailed teachings not found in the other gospels. His narrative is also characterized by a focus on Jesus’ words rather than his actions, and it includes significant theological discourses such as the new birth and Jesus as the bread of life.
