Coming to Life: Malachi

After the Israelites returned from exile and rebuilt the temple, they expected immediate fulfillment of God’s promises. When these promises didn’t materialize, they became unfaithful once again. The prophet Malachi, writing around 450 B.C., addresses their disillusionment and continued disobedience. He highlights their sins, such as offering blemished sacrifices, breaking covenants, and failing to support the temple. Despite their claims of innocence, Malachi condemns their actions and introduces two future messengers: John the Baptist, who will prepare the way for Jesus, the Messiah who will fulfill and establish a new covenant.

Malachi concludes the Old Testament by urging the Israelites to remember the law of Moses and to await the coming of Elijah, symbolizing the prophets and likely referring to John the Baptist. The book ends with a promise of salvation for those who revere God and a reminder of the coming judgment. Following Malachi, God remains silent for over 400 years, marking the end of the Old Testament and setting the stage for the New Testament’s arrival.
