That phrase is at the heart of all the children of Adam and behind all the wrong decisions that we make. Think about it on a macro level. sins that perhaps we would all say, oh, what a terror, what a horror of sin, like genocides. Behind any genocide, there was someone who said,

who cares about this? But also behind sins that are a little closer to home. Behind every adultery, there is a man or a woman who says, who cares about this? Behind every morbid act, behind every rape, abuse, lies, and even behind the sins that one considers more innocent, like my two little daughters, that even when I bathe them, after 20 threats, they still wet the whole floor of the bathroom, there is always a son of Adam who says, why is this so important? In the end, the fundamental question for any disciple of Jesus, any follower of the Messiah, is whether what you are doing is important for God or not. And you are always deciding that. Let me tell you a little more. If you have brought the Bible today, your copy of the Word of God, I want you to put it up high. And what do we say? This is the Word of God. If I want you to go to Acts, chapter 5, Acts is in the New Testament. If you have a Catholic Bible or a Christian Bible, they are in the same direction. It is the fifth book of the New Testament, Acts. We are going to study a little together Acts, chapter 5 of Acts. And while you are going there, I am going to put you on the scene a little

so that you understand what is happening here. In the year, more or less, 1400, 1500 B.C., God had, and we get to Joshua, chapter 6, 7 and 8, God had liberated Israel from slavery in Egypt. And after liberating it, God raised a new leader called Joshua. Joshua was in charge of taking the people of Israel and putting them in the Promised Land. And that is what is actually happening. The first fight, the first fight in the Promised Land was in Jericho. We have sung songs here that mention Jericho, that they turned around, they sang, and God was the one who won for them. But God had told them that at least in that first fight, in that first fight, they could not take anything from the booty of war, from the spoils of war. God would not have a problem with them doing it in other wars, but in the first one, in Jericho, no one could take anything from the people of Jericho. They would have to have given everything to God. However, there is a man called Achan, who in his mind said, I do not think this is so important. And Achan took from what he did not have to take. Notice how wrong he was, that the whole people, in the next fight, would lose massively, and Joshua, the leader, was lying down,

saying, Lord, how can this be? Here we just won, now we are losing, but what did I do wrong? People are going to think that you no longer want to be with us. And God said to him, get up. It is not that I do not want to be with you, it is that there is someone in the people who took what he should not have taken. The story goes on, the issue is that Achan is exposed, and he and his family have to pay the most expensive penalty, which is the death penalty. The whole family of Achan dies, and once they die, it is as if the situation is unraveled, and God continues to bless the movement. Well, I want you to take control and put fast forward. 1,500 years later, you reach the first century in the streets of Jerusalem, which is the context that Luke is writing in, in chapter 5. The first century after Christ in Jerusalem. And it turns out that a tremendous movement was living there. Jesus had already died and resurrected. He was now with the Father. The Father and the Son sent the Holy Spirit. Who? The Holy Spirit. And the movement began. Just as in the Old Testament the conquest of the Old World began, now the new conquest of the new people of God began.

The people were happy. The disciples were multiplying. A lot of people were growing in Christ, okay? And everything was fine, until now a new Achan rises. Someone rises in whom Satan finds ground, fertile ground. Someone within the movement. A new Achan. And the question that Luke, who writes Acts, has to answer is this. Is it important for God or not? Is it important for God that someone takes Him as a toy or not? We all know that in the Old Testament there were great, massive consequences for taking God as a toy. But what about the new people of God? everything seems fine. So the question that Lucas has to answer is this, is it the same God from the Old Testament, or did God change? Notice how he answers the question through this story. Acts chapter 5 says this, There was a certain man called Ananias, says verse 1, who together with his wife Sapphira sold a property. He took only a part of the money to the apostles, but he claimed it was the total sum of the sale. With the consent of his wife, he kept the rest. Then Peter said to Ananias, Why have you allowed Satan to fill your heart? You lied to the Holy Spirit, you kept a part of the money, and the decision to sell or not the property was yours. And after selling it, the money was also yours to give away or not. How could you do something like that? You did not lie to us, but to God. To lie to the Holy Spirit is to lie to God.

As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell to the ground and died. And all who heard of what happened were terrified. Then some boys got up, wrapped him in a sheet, and had an express funeral. They took him out and buried him. About three hours later, his wife Sapphira came in, not knowing what had happened. And Peter asked her, Was this all the money you and your husband received for the sale of your property? And what did she say? Yes, she answered. That was the price. And Peter said to her, How could you two even think of conspiring to test the Spirit of the Lord in this way? And the young men who buried your husband are right outside the door. They will also take you out carrying you. And at that moment she fell to the ground and died. And when the young men came in and saw that she was dead, they took her out and buried her next to her husband. Verse 11. Great fear took hold of the whole church and of all who heard what had happened. That's the end of today's text. It seems like this story is misplaced. You would expect to find it in the Old Testament, not in the New. I don't understand. It seems like people died in the Old and in the New. It seems to be all rainbows in love. I'm going to tell you what the main idea of the text is, and now we're going to break it down. Luke is telling you something. Just as there was a man who threatened the mission of the Old Testament, called, what was his name? Achan. And God had to deal with him. So in the new people of God, in the New Testament, Ananias and Sapphira, God had to deal with them. And God had to give them an immediate judgment, and through that immediate judgment God produced something in the heart of the rest of the church

called fear of God. I want you to tell me fear of God. That's the point that Luke is trying to make. And I'm going to make it a little easier for you. You would have to see it on this screen. The answer that the word of God is giving you to the initial question, if God cares or not, if God cares about the purity in his people or not, if God cares about holiness, if God gives two lemons or not, because the people of his people live in transparency, this is the answer. Yes to God, yes. What does it say there? God cares. And the way this is going to be proven in the text is with three scenes. I'm going to give it to you if you're taking notes. If you want to write it, write it. And if you don't want to write it, don't write it. The first scene is this, hidden sins. The second scene that I see in the text is exposed hearts. And the third scene is called evidenced or demonstrated holiness. And if you behave well this morning, I have a bonus scene for you that I called this way. This is your chance, Zafira. Are we getting into the word or not? Are you ready? Let's go to the first scene, then, which I called hidden sins. The text tells us that there was a man named Ananias and his wife Zafira. Just by their names, I can tell you something as a researcher.

They were Jews. If you weren't a Jew, no one would give you those names, which are Aramaic. They had presumably grown up in a family that knew the Old Testament, knew the first part of your Bible. People who presumably grew up in the synagogue, listening to God, listening to the holiness of God, and so on. At some point, Ananias and Zafira join the movement of Jesus. They hear that Jesus died and rose again. They are possibly baptized because they are part of the family. And the spiritual adrenaline that runs through their veins runs through the rest. And it's to see that God is moving. God is moving. We know what it feels like. It's those moments that, as a church, I think that when we are in the spiritual retreats, or when we are in the invasion of God's love, it's like we are all in charge, we are all ready, let's go. You put me in a building with an invasion of God's love sign. It's like everyone is on fire. Ananias and Sapphira were in a moment, they were riding the wave. They were surfing the wave of God's movement. They were excited. And they were seeing that many of the church were doing the following. As the growth was so massive, and so difficult to contain, and so many people were joining in, widowed women, sick people, and immigrants, the church said,

we need more what? More money to help. And many people in the church were making this decision. I'm going to sell my real estate, and everything I earn from the sale of my land, I'm going to give it to whom? To the church. There were a lot of people who said, yes, my grandfather left me a piece of land, and I want to sell it, and I want to give it to the Lord. Wow, tremendous. It turns out that Ananias and Sapphira, seeing that everyone, left and right, everyone was selling their things, said, and I too, I also have this adrenaline, I want to be part of it. And they say that they get excited, and they sell a property. It says in verse 1. So imagine, I call this sanctified imagination. It doesn't say this, Lucas, but I think my explanation will help you understand it. Imagine that the apostles are gathered, Peter, John, etc., and they are saying, hey brothers, let's pray, because the church is still growing, and we don't have money to help the widows, the poor. And someone knocks on the door.

Yes? And someone says, a family, Ananias and Sapphira, I think you remember them. Yes, yes, we remember. And they say that the Lord put something in their hearts. Okay, let them come in. And they come in, and Ananias and Sapphira say, look, we are seeing the need in the church, everyone is selling their land, and God put something in our hearts too, and we want to tell you something. We have sworn to the Lord, God of Israel, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, that if our land, I have a land three blocks from here, is sold in seven days, we say to the Lord, everything we sell of that land, we will give to you. And what they say to the apostles is, please pray for us, because if we sell it in seven days, everything is for him. Okay? And the apostles say, all right, let's pray. It turns out that three or four days pass. You know when you ask someone to pray, but you don't think it will be fulfilled. Well, it turns out that it was fulfilled. In my imagined story, it was fulfilled.

And they, in Zillow, had sold it for $30,000. Okay? The lot they had was sold for $30,000. Imagine that Ananias goes, and I don't know if you've ever tried to buy a house in this place, there is always a bastard who has a lot of cash and buys it before you, poor, poor worker. It turns out that Ananias meets one of these guys who has a lot of cash, and the guy says to him, hey, I know you said $30,000, but if you give it to me today, I'll give you $50,000. And Ananias says, where do I sign? He signs the contract, he takes it to the bag with $50,000, and there is Safira at home, cooking, and he says, hey, fatty, I have to tell you something. Can you sit down and serve me a coffee? And he says, did you see the property that we had prayed for to be sold for $30,000? And he says, a guy came full of money and gave him how much? He gave him $50,000.

And Safira says, hey, let's sit down, let's talk about this. And the two of them stare at each other, and you know when you feel that stab in the heart, when you know that there is something bad that is born in your heart, and if you don't destroy it, it will take you south, but still you continue to water that bad idea that you had. That's what they feel. And Safira says to him, and Ananias says to him, it's been a while since we wanted to fix the roof, I want to remodel the bathroom, the patio too, look how destroyed it is, and we hadn't done it because it costs us $20,000, and the people who charge us here don't have insurance. And Ananias says to him, let's do one thing, let's take the apostles, $30,000, which was the price published on the ground, and how much do we have left? I hope you are good at math, my friends. And Safira says to him, hey, doesn't this sound a little shady to you? Aren't we lying to them?

And he says, lying? I'm giving them $30,000! And she says, yes, I know, but we told the Lord that we were going to give him what? Everything! And he says, you will see it on your screen. And he says, not a big deal. I don't think God cares so much. And it turns out that verse 2 tells us, they took only a part of the money from the apostles, but they said it was the total sum of the sale. Both were part of this perfidious decision. And this, which seems small, it's nonsense, it's small! That small ended up revealing something very big in the depths of the heart of my two friends Ananias and Sapphira. And that introduces us to the second scene, where I put exposed hearts. I don't know how, but Peter found out. The Holy Spirit, in some way, was in charge, because Luke doesn't tell us how the whole conversation went, the Holy Spirit, in some way, was in charge of revealing to Peter that they were lying to him. And that's how it works, right? In the end, the Holy Spirit, look at me. Wait, are you with me this morning, yes or no? The Holy Spirit, sooner or later, will reveal the truth. You know that, don't you? People of God, you know that the Holy Spirit is a true spirit. And the Holy Spirit, whether in two days or in 200 years, will always reveal the truth.

Always. Peter ends up finding out the truth. And he doesn't curse Ananias. He seems to be cursing him, but the judgment is God's, not Peter's. What Peter is going to do is expose what is in the bottom of Ananias' heart. Let me explain to you a little bit what I mean by the bottom of the heart. You are going to see two different images on your screen. One of a small stone, and another of what? Of an iceberg. We, in general, as disciples of the Messiah, when we think of our own sins, we assume that our hidden sins, those secrets, are more like a small stone on the floor, a flat floor. Assume that it is a pavement. A small stone, when you see it and it bothers you, what do you do? You kick it. And at the risk of sounding too philosophical here, you can kick it because it has an independent existence. It is not tied to other stones. You kick it and it goes. That's it. You dealt with your issue. Quick. Done. Sorry, sir. Let's move on. However, what happens when the Holy Spirit, when He sees our hidden sins, He doesn't see them as a stone, but rather as what? An iceberg. And in the iceberg, you only see 10%, which is what is above. However, your senses are not able to perceive the 90% that is below the surface.

The 90% that destroys the Titanic. You don't see that. The Holy Spirit, when He sees our hidden sins and sees that we are playing with God, He doesn't see it simply as a little thing that existed. Oh, it was a fallback. It was a little lie. That's how you and I see it. But from heaven, the Holy Spirit sees a lot of internal processes that led you to make that decision. A lot of lies that you chose to believe for a thousand days and that you were watering what Satan had planted for you. The Holy Spirit is able to see from the bottom what is what there is. And that's why when the Holy Spirit wants to expose, He doesn't just say, you did this wrong, I asked for forgiveness, and so on. He is worried about what led you to do what you did. I'm going to tell you a story. About 16 years ago, when I was younger, but not more handsome, I lived in the United States, a year before I got married, and the family that was hosting me lived in Atlanta, Georgia. They lived in these neighborhoods here in the United States, which are way up. So the way you have to park your car in the driveway

is like this, inclined, right? In an angle. It turns out that the church had lent me a truck from the year of the pear. It was from 1994. Nobody wanted to use it. They gave it to me. And it was a very striking color. It was purple. It was the only purple truck from the year of the pear in all of Atlanta, in my opinion. The thing is that they had lent it to me, and I had parked it at home. It was a Saturday morning, and the family said, we want to go out, can you move your car so that we can go out? I said, sure. But it was a Saturday morning, I was wearing my flip flops, and I said, why take the keys? I'm going to use gravity in my favor. The only thing I'm going to do is get in the car, remove the handbrake, which is not a handbrake but a handbrake so that the truck itself goes down. The only thing I have to do is maneuver it. Very good. It's one of those ideas that my wife says, why are you so smart in so little and so stupid in most things in life? It turns out that I get in the car, I remove the emergency brake,

It starts to go down, and it keeps going down, and it keeps going down. And I say, oh, I'm going to set it up, and you know what I realize? Without the key, the steering wheel locks. And in that same second, I understand the existential void. I can't do anything about it, sir. Give me the serenity to accept the things that I can't change. It turns out that the car starts to make a U-turn, and it goes straight to the neighbor's truck of the year. When that hit happens, do you know what I did first? I looked quickly, and I said, nothing happened. I convinced myself, and I believed it, I swear. I believed it, nothing happened. I went quickly to get the keys, I started it, and I said, nothing happened, it was a little hit, and I left. Nobody saw me. Three weeks pass, and the one who was hosting me says to me, hey, Pablito, I have a question. He says, have you had an accident three weeks ago? And I remained silent, a silence that gives way. And he says to me, do you know that the neighbor can no longer open his car? Because someone destroyed all his rear bumper. And it's all full of purple paint next to his truck. So I said, I understand. I go to the neighbor, a well-behaved man. I say, can I talk to you? He says, sure, come. I already wanted to tell him, look, I'm... And he said, no, no, no, come to my house, come. So I go to him, I sit down, I have a coffee, he says, what do you have to tell me?

And I tell him, look, the truth is that I was the one who hit him, and I swear, I'm saving money for my wedding, and my future wife is going to kill me, but I give him all the money I have to give him, and I'm going to work harder. And he says, no, no. I want to talk to you about something deeper. And I say, what's the problem? And he says, do you think that... He says, I'm very angry with you. And I say, yes, I already had that. He says, no, no, it's just that you are confused about the reason why I'm angry with you. He says, you came to ask me for forgiveness, and you want to fix the problem. I don't need your money. He says, I have a lot of money, and I agree with him. He looks like a man with a lot of money. He says, I don't need your money. Do you know what makes me angry? It's that you were there for three weeks, knowing that you did something wrong, and you were perfectly fine with that, and you didn't come to face your problem. I'll tell you something sad. That man didn't even follow my Messiah. That man didn't even believe in God. But he was able to see something that I, as a follower of Jesus, didn't see. My problem wasn't superficial.

A little lie. It's okay. He knew how to see what the Holy Spirit was seeing in Ananias and Sapphira. Bro, there's something deep here. And you're not able to see it. And Peter asks them three questions that help Ananias go deeper. The first question is this. Why did you allow Satan to fill your heart? In all facts, you see the Holy Spirit filling people. But here, for the first time, you see someone else filling someone else's heart. Satan. What for Ananias was simply a little lie, superfluous, irrelevant, a minute thing, the Holy Spirit was saying, you invited Satan to your table. I don't see it as a little white lie. I don't even know what that is. You invited Satan. In the spiritual world, what you consider so small, in the spiritual world, was understood as an open invitation to the prince of demons. The second question is, and it's in the form of a question in the original text, why did you want to deceive the Holy Spirit? Why did you think,

why did you think you could play with God? Because when you mess with the Holy Spirit, you're not messing with a force, or a mighty wind. You're messing with the one whom the Father and the Son sent. He is the one who filled the new temple, the new church of God, and you messed with the whole Trinity. You deceived God, or you wanted to deceive Him. It wasn't just a nonsense. You wanted to mess with God. And it ends with the hardest question. It says, you'll see it in the text, if the money was yours, how could you do something like that? Do you know why I think this is the most penetrating question? Look at me, look at me, look at me for a second. Do you know why I think this is the most penetrating question? Because I understand that Peter... He said, this man is going to start saying, I did it because I was pressured. Because no one gives me a place in this church. And then I saw that everyone was selling their real estate and everyone was selling their houses. So, well, I felt like they were forcing me to do it. It's your fault. Does that ring a bell or not? Do you remember when Adam and Eve, we always do the same, the children of Adam. It was you in the end, Lord. It was you. It's your fault that I ended up making this decision. And Peter says, no, no, no, no, no.

No one forced you to sell that. No one asked you to. The one who made the decision, who was it? It was you. It was you. I know you want to hide behind the excuses that, well, it's the circumstances in which I found myself. It's also that if you were in my shoes, Peter. No, no, no, no shoes. You made your decision. And it wasn't just one decision, like I told you before. It was a thousand decisions. You're going to see it on your screen. You invited Satan to your table. You didn't take God's presence seriously. It was a game for you. And it was all your decision. You saw what looked like a little stone, a little lie, a little trick. Suddenly, the Holy Spirit discovers the bottom of the iceberg and says, Now you understand how your hidden sin, Son of God, is seen. This obviously leads to the third scene, which is the hardest, in which I titled it, Evidenced Holiness. Evidenced means demonstrated. Verse 5 says that when Ananias heard these words, he fell to the ground and died. Here are two consequences of what God did. Was God the one who killed him? Yes, that's what the text says. That's exactly what the text says. And it had two consequences. Look at it carefully. The first consequence is, just as Achan had to die in the Old Testament

because he played with God, now Ananias, in the New Testament, is going to die for the same reason. But the second consequence is a horrible and negative consequence, and his wife, later on, is also going to incur the same. But the positive consequence is this. It says, later on, in verse 11, that great fear of God took over the church. People began to feel something. And now I'm going to tell you a little bit about God's fear. God was demonstrating the following. There are differences between the Old Testament and the New Testament. In the Old Testament, the word of God talks about dietary rules, what to eat, what not to eat. It talks about celebrations, Shabbat, Jewish celebrations. God doesn't ask for that anymore. But there's something that hasn't changed between the Old and the New. Do you know who hasn't changed? Tell me. Who hasn't changed? Your God hasn't changed. His burning desire for purity and truth and transparency hasn't gone anywhere. And if this morning you're saying, but Jesus saved me, and I understand that if I have grace, then God doesn't... Listen to me. Of course God has saved you. I don't know if He can tell me, amen, that I've been saved by Christ or not. But it's a great sin to think that God's grace dilutes God's holiness. When God invites you to come to Christ,

God is inviting you to God. God isn't inviting you simply if you want to come to heaven one day. God is saying, do you believe me? It's me. Jesus, when He saves you, He doesn't save you to despise God's holiness. He saves you to learn to treasure it. To love it. To fill your heart with fear of the name. To do what religion could never do. To believe in Christ. He wouldn't have to make you play with God. He would have to bring you closer to Him. Is there anyone who can tell me, amen, this morning, yes or no? Listen to me carefully. Verse 11 says, that great fear took over the whole church. What is that fear? It's that, it's that burning, irreverent impression that God, the Holy Spirit, puts on your heart in the presence of God. God's fear is similar to that impression that you have when you see that unrepeatable sunset. Or you're in a place at night where there are no lights and you see the stars

and you feel that existential smallness saying, man, I'm so small, look how big this universe is. That's what you felt in your heart. That's fear. That's what the Bible means, fear. And God says that He has saved you so that you learn the fear of His name. Church of Christ, listen to me carefully. God has saved you from an irreverent life. Not so that you live an irreverent life. God has saved you from your inability to approach the holiness of God so that you may love and desire the holiness of God, not so that you may play with it as if your God now had changed. God sanctified His name. What do we say in Our Father? The first thing we say, Our Father, what? Say it. What, Father, that you are in heaven, what? What did you want to say all your life when sanctified was your name? What did you want to say? What you wanted to say is that the whole earth feels a sacred impression of your presence, and I want to feel it too. Make me tremble and at the same time smile before you. Not tremble to make me escape from you, but that kind of tremor that you feel with someone you respect and at the same time love. Church, are you with me, yes or no? God's fear was restored. So, before the hidden sin of the people, hearts are always exposed, and the holiness of God will always be evidenced. They have behaved well, and I finish with this bonus. The bonus, I put the bonus scene, this is your opportunity, Saphira.

You can pass by now, guys. Y'all can come up. Verse 8 says that Saphira came later, three hours later, and she didn't know that her husband had just been buried. And Peter asks her a question, verse 8. Was this all the money that you and your husband received for the sale of his land? Do you know why I think this is the bonus scene? We already know how it ended. She chose to accompany her husband in sin, and she would accompany him in the grave too. But the question for the Church of Christ is this. Are you going to care? God is giving you an opportunity. Saphira, Saphira, I want to go to this scene and say, Bro, if you knew what just happened to your husband for having played, this is your moment. God is giving you, Saphira, an opportunity to come clean. Don't double down. This is your moment to say, you know what? It's true. I wanted to have the same honor that the rest had. I lied, and I need the forgiveness of the Lord. Bring the dirt you have. Saphira's answer was to say, I don't give a damn. Yes, we sold it for $30,000. I ask you a question. Do you want your story to end just like Saphira? The Holy Spirit is a true spirit. And right now he's telling you, bring the dirt. Bring the dirt. God is a kind of God who receives you, restores you, cleanses you,

but you have to come. Can someone say amen or no? Amen. You have to come. If the Holy Spirit is going to expose it, and he himself is telling you, come, and he's asking you, did you do this? Are you hiding that? The answer of the Son of God is, here I am. I don't want to invite the enemy to my table anymore. I don't want to keep taking God's presence as a game. I don't want to keep apologizing for what others have done. 1 John 1, verse 9 says, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just. For what? To forgive. If we confess. I want you to stand up. The leaders who are going to receive people or minister can come to the front. All eyes closed. No one looking. No one looking this morning. This is a very strong word for the children and daughters of God. Come clean. Those things and practices that you call retreats, and you're treating them as if they were a pebble on the road. It's okay. I'm just a human being. They don't look like that. The Holy Spirit is not someone who came to play with you. The Holy Spirit is the same presence of God in his new temple.

God does care. And if there is something in your life right now, that the Holy Spirit alone has taken care of, to say, you know what, you're playing with me. You're playing with me.
