Where Is Your Security?

We hope and pray for God to speak to you today as you seek to live your life all in for Jesus Christ. And now from First Baptist Church in Cleveland, Tennessee, here's Pastor Jordan Easley. Well, I'm glad you're here, and I hope you have a Bible. If you do, we're gonna be in Psalm 121 today. We're continuing our series called God Defined It. And if you've been here over the last couple of weeks, you know we've really tackled some big topics in our culture today, things that God defines that the world tries to redefine. And today we're continuing that under this idea of God defined our security. You know, when you hear that word security, what image automatically pops into your mind? Maybe you think about a security guard, anybody? Or maybe you think about a home security system. Maybe when you think about personal security, you think about carrying a gun on your hip, or maybe you think about defending yourself and learning karate. I was thinking about this idea of security a couple of weeks ago, and I was reading in the Bible,

and I got to Proverbs 3, 26, and this verse kind of caught me off guard. It says, for the Lord is your security. And it doesn't say is a part of your security, or the Lord is a portion of your security. It says the Lord is your security. And when I read that, my initial thought was, yeah, of course, Jesus is always there. And of course, Jesus always has our back. But there was also something there that said, but if I want to be safe and secure, and if I wanna be protected, then I need to do some things on my own as well. I need to take some personal responsibility to build my security and to build my stability. And as soon as I started thinking that thought, I realized, wait a second, that's a lie. That's a lie. What I'm believing is a lie that the devil wants me to believe. He doesn't want me to believe that Jesus is my only source of security. He wants me to believe that Jesus can't provide that for me, but that I can provide that for myself. And that's just the way the devil works, is it not? In the same way the devil wants us to believe lies regarding things like hope and joy and peace and where those things come from. In the same way the devil works so hard indoctrinating our culture with lies

regarding gender and marriage and love, we've got to understand that the devil is the author of confusion. And he wants us to be confused on these foundational things. He wants us to believe if we're going to have security, then we need to provide that for ourself because Jesus can't do it by himself. The truth is Jesus is the source for everything you need. And we need to just go just foundational truth. And that's what the word of God says. That's what the devil knows. But his job is to convince us that we don't need Jesus. And that is simply not true. We just read that the Lord is our security, which means that he alone has the capacity and the ability to protect us, to provide for us and to keep us safe. For some of you, when you think of this idea of security, your mind goes in a different direction. If you're being honest, many of you would say my security comes from my successes or my security comes from my resume or my experiences. When you think about being safe and secure, you might even equate your security with your 401k or what's hanging out in your savings account, or maybe it's your social security benefits. For others in the room, being secure may mean living in the right community or having the right circle of friends or electing the right president.

Am I stepping on anybody's toes today? Hello. If you were to finish this sentence, how would you honestly finish it today? My sense of security comes from blank. What would you put? What would you put right in that blank? My sense of security, my stability, my hope, my foundation is built on what? Listen, I know we're really good at giving church answers in this environment, but I want you to really lean into that question because I believe if the Lord observed the truth of our hearts today, that he would see that the world has done a really good job of convincing us that our sense of security needs to be contingent on many things and many other people other than Jesus. In Psalm 121 today, we're gonna see David asking the same question that I'm asking today. In fact, let me read this out of verse one. He said, I lift my eyes towards the mountains. Where will my help? help come from?" I think that's a great question, a valid question for all of us today. Where will my help come from? When you look up to the mountains, in other words, when you're down

and your eyes are looking up, to whom are you looking to pick you up? Right here where he says, my help will come from what? That word help is synonymous with security. Where does my security come from? That word help is synonymous with hope. Where is my hope? Where does my hope come from? So the question is, when I'm in a place of desperation or need, where do my eyes go? When the bottom falls out, what's my security blanket? When it all hits the proverbial fan, what resources are going to sustain me? What person is going to protect me? Where does my help come from? I read a story this week that said, during the initial construction of the Golden Gate Bridge, no safety devices were installed or used. In fact, 23 men fell to their death while building this bridge. Did you know that? 23 men. But then in the final phase of that building project, a large net was installed as a safety precaution, and at least 10 men fell into that net and were saved from certain death. Something else I found interesting about that article

was that 25% more work was accomplished once that net was installed. You know why? Because once there was a net, those men could, they could live in freedom, right? I mean, they had assurance of their safety. They had security knowing even if I fall, there's something there to catch me. May I ask you a question? If you were to fall today, what would you count on? Or better yet, who would you count on to catch you? Hey, that's how the psalmist began this song. He said, where does my help come from? But look at how he responded in verse two. He said, my help comes from the Lord. You see that? He said, my help comes from him. The Lord is my source of security. Many times people hear Christians say things like that, like my help comes from the Lord, or my hope is in the Lord, and they sort of roll their eyes because they just don't get it. And it is hard to explain to someone who doesn't know Jesus, who doesn't live with the same assurances that many of us live with. They think if you wanna be safe and secure,

it's okay to love Jesus, but you better have more than that. Even to many of us, we're living our life as Christians, and we're currently living and operating with a Jesus plus mentality. The world says it's okay to love Jesus, but you better handle a few things on your own as well. Like you better have the right doctor and Jesus. You better have the right treatment plan or the right amount of money in your bank account and Jesus if you're gonna get through this. But when the scriptures talk about this subject, it gives us a different picture. The scriptures basically say, if you have Jesus, you will have everything you need. And now that doesn't mean that you no longer need doctors, okay? Don't hear me say that. It doesn't mean you no longer need medicine or money. But what it's saying is that when Jesus saves your soul, when you surrender your life to Christ and you walk by faith in Jesus Christ, that he can provide for you in ways that no one else can. So I might still have a doctor and I do, right? I might still have medicine and I do, but my faith is now in the creator, not on things that he created. So Jesus, understand he can open doors that no one else can open.

He can heal diseases that no one else can heal. He is our provider when all other sources of provision dry up. That's who Jesus is. So the question, where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord. But here's the question, why? Why Jesus? I mean, just think through the eyes of a skeptic real quick and ask the question, what makes Jesus so special? Why should I trust Jesus to be my source of security today? Well, I think as we continue to read this passage, the following verses are gonna answer that question. In fact, if you're taking notes, I wanna show you five different reasons that Jesus needs to be your security today. The first one is this, our source of security is the creator of everything. Look at verse two, my help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. You can think about every other source that we have a tendency to run to today. Every other source, we run to money, why? Because we believe that dollars are going to catch us if we fall. We run to relationships. Why? Because as long as we have someone, we're gonna be okay. We run to things like safety or the idea of safety. Why?

Because in a scary world, taking those precautions makes us feel better. What are the sources of security that we tend to chase? We can all fill in the blank with this one, right? We all have a tendency to run to something or someone. And you know what? Some of those things will comfort us and some of those things will protect us temporarily. But 100% of those things will ultimately fail us eventually. You run to money, guess what? That money is going to protect you and make you feel really good for a minute. But at the end of the day, what happens when the money runs out? You can run to that relationship and it's gonna make you feel super good in the moment. But what happens when the relationship is no more? We can run to things that will temporarily comfort us, but ultimately none of those things will last. Nothing else that we chase in this world can say what God says. You know what he says? I am the creator of everything. I am the maker of everything. Nothing else that we chase as a source of security can make that claim, only God. Hey, get this. Only God can fulfill the role of God in your life. This is a big point.

Because if you put anything else in his place, that sentence may look similar, but when the big G becomes a little g, you have a major problem. When you look at money or relationships as your safety net, you're trusting in a little g God to do things only a big g God can do. Do you get that? Sometimes I think that we miss out on God's best because we replace God with things that simply can't be God. There's only one God. And the Bible said that he is your security today. He is the creator of everything. But let me give you number two. You're ready? Say, I'm ready. Say, I'm ready. I'm ready. Now you're ready. Number two, not only is he that, guess what? He is the one who prepares our path. Do you realize that Jesus says, I will prepare your path for you? Look at what he says. He will not allow your foot to slip. He says, I offer stability. When I read that verse earlier this week, my mind immediately went to something that happened back in January of this year. Maybe you remember there was a unforgettable winter storm

that hit our city in January. And I say it was unforgettable because at least for my family, the ice was so bad on our driveway that we were literally stuck at home for days. In fact, at one point, we had two cars stuck in the ditch at the bottom of our driveway. And even with four wheel drive, we could not get the cars up the driveway. We couldn't drive up to our house. And that was driving me crazy. After a couple of days, I was getting a little antsy. I was like, we got to get out of here. We're going to kill something. You know, this is going to get bad if we don't get out of this house. And so I was kind of getting to that point where I was willing to try everything. I didn't grow up around ice, but I did everything that the internet told me to do. And I got a bunch of salt. I was throwing salt all over the place. Any y'all ever thrown salt on ice? It doesn't work very well. It didn't work for me. Maybe I did it wrong. Second thing I did, I had a plastic snow shovel. Don't ask me where I got it, but I had a plastic snow shovel

and I'm trying to get this big, these thick ice off a driveway with the plastic. It doesn't work. It didn't work for me. I was very, very frustrated with that. At one point, I even got my propane torch that I used to burn weeds. I looked like I had a flamethrower out in my yard. I'm blowing fire all over the place and it would melt it for a second, but then it would immediately freeze. I was so frustrated. At one point, I walked down my driveway because on an ATV, we had a metal shovel at the bottom of my driveway. And my wife sent this video from our security camera of me walking down the driveway to go get the shovel. Check this out real quick. This is me trying to walk down the driveway. Yep, so far so good. Nope, losing it. Right here, I'm on my tail, all right? I'm sliding on my tail the rest of the way. But let me just tell you, I was on my way to get a shovel because I was gonna try to just chisel a little path up my driveway so that we could get a little traction, just so that we could walk up and down without slipping. And let me just say, it didn't turn out the way it was supposed to turn out.

I ended up on my tail, I'm frustrated, I'm at the bottom of my driveway. I like to say that I was spending time with the Lord. I was not, all right? I was just mad. Have you ever felt completely helpless? Man, that's how I felt on that day. No matter what I tried, there was nothing I could do to clear the ice. But you know what happened next in that story? I was at the bottom of my driveway looking up, I'm looking at the ice and I'm frustrated and I hear a four-wheeler coming up. And I looked down the road and it was a buddy of mine. and on a four-wheeler, and he drives up to me and sarcastically says, hey, I've got 10 huge bags of this stuff called industrial strength ice melt. Do you know anybody who could use that? I was like, yeah, moron. I know somebody who could use that. Bring the 10 bags of industrial strength ice melt. And he did. And let me just tell you after applying this ice melt within minutes, and I'm not exaggerating, within minutes, the ice was gone. Within minutes, our cars could drive up and down. Within minutes, we no longer had to worry about slipping and falling on the ice. Why?

Because the one thing that was needed, the one thing that would work was applied to our problem. Listen, there are a lot of so-called sources that you can apply to your life today, but the Bible says there's only one that's gonna work. The Psalmist said, he will not allow your foot to slip. You know what that means? That God can give you the footing you need. God can give you traction when the world is slippery. That he can propel you up the mountain as you pursue the high places that God intends for you to experience in your life. You know, Psalm 18 talks about this same thing, the same truth about our God. Verse 30 says, God, his ways are perfect. The word of the Lord is pure. He's a shield to all who take refuge in him. For who is God besides the Lord? And who is a rock? Only our God. God, he clothes me with strength and makes my way perfect. Then read verse 33. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer and sets me securely on the heights. Listen, when God is your source, your feet will no longer slip like they once slipped. This says, he makes my feet like the feet of a deer. Earlier translations read, he makes my feet like hind's feet. And I like that word hind

because in the original language, it lets us know that it's not just a random deer. He's not talking about an American whitetail buck. He's talking about a specific kind of animal. In fact, that deer is a female red stag. And here's why that's so interesting. It's because a female red stag is very unique. In fact, it's one of the few creatures in the entire world that walks in the certain way where the back feet never leave where the front feet have already been. The front feet land, the back feet land in that exact same spot. They call it tracking. The front feet packed the ground and prepare the ground. And then the back feet step in those same spots, allowing that deer to launch from a solid footing, which allows a female red stag to climb to higher places than most creatures will ever be able to climb. Hey, let me ask you a question today. How are you gonna climb to the high places that God has intended for you? How are you gonna get to that place? Read it again. What does he say? He says, he makes my feet like the feet of a deer. God does that for us. He is our source of security. Like the Psalmist said, he will not allow your foot to slip. He alone will set you securely on the heights.

Let me ask you something. Do you know him like that today? The Bible says that Jesus alone can be that for you. He prepares our path. But you know what number three is? The Bible says he is always alert. Not only does he prepare your path, he's always alert. I think most people would probably agree that the United States Secret Service has traditionally been the leading security detail in the entire world. Every single day, these people protect the president and protect his family. Every single day, they prevent tragedy in our country. Most of the time, we don't even know what's happening behind the scenes. But as we've seen in recent days, even the greatest security detail in the world is still fallible. It's made up of men and women just like us. People who get tired, people who get hungry, people who get distracted. These people are the best in the security business. But listen to me, it is impossible for anyone to stay alert 100% of the time. You know what the Bible says about our God? Look at, read verse three. Your protector will not slumber. Indeed, the protector of Israel does not slumber or sleep. Six times in six different verses,

we're reminded here that God is our protector. And this says he doesn't sleep and he doesn't slumber. What does that mean? It means that when you're a child of the king, you serve a God who watches over your life every single second of every single day. Your God doesn't take naps. He doesn't sleep on the floor. the job. Our God doesn't even blink when he watches over you in your life. Do you realize? Like he's just like this all the time. He's not blinking. The Bible says he's always alert. He's never distracted in his deity and he takes his job as our protector very seriously. When you stop and realize that your God doesn't miss anything, that he doesn't overlook some things, it allows you to trust that even when difficulties come to the surface, even when troubles arise in your life, that you can trust God and his sovereignty. Now that doesn't mean that you're always gonna agree with the things that God allows to happen in your life. That doesn't mean that difficult things aren't gonna happen in your story. But what it does mean is you can trust him when they do because the Bible says he's paying attention

and that he has a great plan and purpose for your life. He's fully aware of what's happening. Psalm 28 verse seven says, "'The Lord is my strength and my shield.'" What does that mean? You know what that tells me? It tells me nothing can get to me unless it first comes through God. Nothing can get to me that doesn't first go through him. Why? Because he's our shield. He's with us and he's for us. And he promises that he as our protector will protect us. So who is Jesus as your source of security? You know what he is? He's the creator of everything. He's the one who prepares our path. He's always alert. But let me show you number four. This says he is also a safe shelter. He is a safe shelter. Look at verse five. The Lord protects you. The Lord is a shelter right by your side. The sun will not strike you by day or the moon by night. Let me ask you a personal question. When danger comes knocking at your door, where are you running? When danger comes knocking at your door, where are you going?

You know, for the past 10 years or so, we've had chickens. I don't know if I've shared this with you or not, but we have chickens. And when we first started this whole chicken thing, we did it because we thought this would be a great way to teach our kids responsibility. You know, the kids will take care of the chickens. They'll water them and walk them and do whatever you do with chickens. I didn't know what you did with chickens, but I was like, my kids, this is gonna teach them. And I'll say this in the privacy of this room. My kids don't even know we have chickens. And I'll say, my wife is not, she's serving in this hour. She's not in here. Y'all don't say this. She don't know it either. All right, she don't do anything to help. It's just me and the chickens. Today we have eight chickens. And let me just say, when we started this chicken thing, we just, it was kind of on a whim. And we were like, yeah, let's get chickens. Actually, I didn't talk to anybody. I just ordered them. I went to a website and I ordered 25 chickens. I was like, this is gonna be awesome. 25 baby chickens. The next day, they showed up in a FedEx box

with holes in it. True story. You can buy chickens online. And when the box arrived the very next day, I'm gonna be honest with you guys. I was not prepared to be a chicken dad. I didn't know what I was doing. And so I immediately went to YouTube and I'm like, how to be a chicken dad? How do I do this? And YouTube said, the very first thing you need for your chickens, other than like a warmer and a place for them to grow, is a shelter. And so how do you build a chicken shelter? And I saw this video that said, you need to have these posts and you need to have chicken wire. And I had basically a square that was five feet tall. And I was like, there's the perfect shelter for my chickens. And so you've got 25 of them. They're running wild. And I'm thinking, I'm a great chicken dad. What I didn't take into consideration was that there were other animals living in the woods that also love chicken. And so one at a time, I'm telling you, we would watch hawks just dive bomb from the sky and just pick off chickens. I'm like, I wasn't ready for that. I wasn't ready for the coyote.

I wasn't ready for the raccoons. It's like everybody was feasting on my flock of chickens. I don't even know if it's a flock, is that right? Anybody? Okay, a flock of chickens. But the 25 went down very quickly. And I realized, you know what? An unsecured shelter is really not a shelter at all. And there's a lot of people, very similarly, that we run to unsecured shelters every single day. So when I asked the question, when danger comes knocking on your doorstep, where are you running? I just wanna tell you, the Bible says there's only one shelter that you can trust. And that shelter is the Lord. Verse five says, he will protect you. The Hebrew word here for protect is also where we get our English word guardian. That word tells us that God is our guardian. So he's watching over us, not with passivity, but with constant activity. That verse says that he is a shelter, but where is he? He's right by your side. He's always close. And I love that. That scenery, knowing even when I'm running away from the Lord that He's right there, He's accessible to me. That term shelter can also be translated as shade. If you're writing your Bible, circle that word shelter

and write the word shade, because that's a word that we see here. Where God is our shelter, He provides shade for us. In other words, God's presence in our life, it provides a cover for us as believers. In the margin of my Bible, I wrote this, that God's presence offers protection, right? It's a covering, a shade for us as believers. You keep going in verse six, when the psalmist talked about the sun and the moon, you've got to remember the context in which this was written. To the traveler in the ancient Near East, a few thousand years ago, the sun was very dangerous. In fact, people would travel on foot through the desert, sometimes 25 miles a day. And the most dangerous thing on their journey would end up being the scorching hot sun throughout the day. He goes on to talk about the moon as well in this verse, which is symbolic of many dangers that would arise at nighttime. As people traveled through the night, even if they were on a dirt road, the darkness would bring uncertainty and it would bring vulnerability. And so that's the picture that we see in the scripture. That's what the psalmist was saying to them in verse five, the Lord protects you. The Lord protects you, He's a shelter for you. He's a shade and He's not some distant deity

high in the sky. What is He saying? He's a shepherd that's right there by your side. That's who He is. He is the creator of everything. He prepares our path. He's always alert. He's a safe shelter, but He's gonna give us one more here and say that Christ is unending. Your source of security is unending. Verse seven, the Lord will protect you from all harm. He will protect your life. The Lord will protect your coming and going when? Both now and forever. I wanna give you a quick outline for the entire message today. Some of you guys love taking notes. And so I wanna just fire off a quick outline for the next time you read this text. Are you ready? You say, man, why should I trust Jesus as my safety and security today? Five words. Number one, because He alone offers the authority to be your safety and security. He alone is the creator of everything. He alone is equipped to be God in your life. Little G gods can't do it, but He alone can. Not only does He offer authority,

He also offers stability. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer, right? He's not gonna allow your foot to slip. He gives you stability. Even in the midst of an icy journey, He said, I will give you the footing that you need. He also offers consistency. We just read about that. He doesn't sleep or slumber. He's fully alert. He's fully committed to being your protector today. But what else does He offer? He offers safety. Our God offers safety. What does it say? He's a shelter like no other. His presence is like shade for your life. He shields us and He protects us. That's what we've read in the text so far. But before we conclude, I want you to see that Christ as our source of security offers one more thing, and that is hope for eternity. Hope for eternity. That verse says the Lord will protect you. He will protect your life. When? Both now and forever. Did you catch that? Listen, when the Psalmist says that God will protect your life,

that word life can also be translated soul. So what that tells us is when God talks about saving us and shielding us, His intentions are not only to protect your physical life today, but He wants to protect your spiritual life for eternity. When you're saved by Christ, your salvation is secure in Christ. I'm gonna say that again. When you are saved by Christ, your salvation is secure in Christ. The question is, do you have that assurance today? Do you live with the kind of assurance that said, hey, no matter what happens to me in this life, I'm good because I belong to the Lord. Can you say today, you know what? Y'all can hurt me. Y'all can talk bad about me. You can make fun of me. You can beat me. You could even kill me if you want. It doesn't matter because I belong to Jesus. My life now and forever is protected by God. Can you honestly say that today? Because the truth is when Christ is your life and you trust in His sovereignty, you ought to live with a different kind of confidence. You ought to walk with a different kind of faith. You ought to operate in a different kind of freedom. You know, while facing persecution and pain,

I remember what Paul said in Romans chapter eight. He said, these present sufferings are no comparison. to the future glory I'll have in Christ Jesus. These present sufferings are no comparison to the future glory I'll have in Christ Jesus. You say, how was he able to say that while facing what he was facing? You know why? Because his salvation was secure in Jesus. He knew no matter what you do to me, you cannot take my Jesus from me. Hey, when you have that kind of assurance that Jesus is your savior and your protector, when you believe that he is your shade and he is your shield, when you believe that nothing can get to you that doesn't first come through him, it ought to give you the confidence that you need in this life. Knowing that God is with you and knowing that God is for you and that God is able to do exceedingly and abundantly more than you could ever ask, think or imagine, guess what? That truth is what allows you to live in true freedom. The Lord will protect your life, when? Now and forever. Hey, what does that mean? You know what it means? It means when you're a child of the King,

you're a child of the King forever and ever and ever. You know, there are a lot of people who struggle with this idea of eternal security. Talked to a lot of people through the years that have said things like that. You know, that I'm afraid that one day or after committing a certain sin that I'm no longer gonna be saved and I'm gonna be cast out and unable to go to heaven. I'm gonna lose my salvation. I read a story a while back about a guy named Watchman Knee who had someone approach him with the same question. They said, can I lose my salvation? Because I feel like I'm losing it right now. When they said that to him, Knee looked at the man and he said, you see that dog over there? That's my dog. He's a good dog, really good dog. He's house trained. He's never made a mess in the house, not one time. He's fully obedient. He can do tricks. He's a pure delight to me. But then he said to the man, but out there in the kitchen, I have a son. He's a baby boy. And let me tell you, that baby boy makes so many messes. Not only by throwing food on the floor, but making messes in his diaper. I mean, he throws his food around.

He fouls his clothes. He's a total mess. But let me ask you a question. Who do you think is going to inherit my kingdom? Not my dog, my son. You know why? Because he's my child. Listen, some of you need to hear this today because your life has been a mess. But when you're a child of the King, you're a child of the King forever. Only Jesus can promise what he's promising here. And he promises to give you the security you need both now and forever. Who is this Jesus? May I tell you? He's the creator of everything. He alone prepares our path. He's always alert. He is a safe shelter right by our side. He is our protector and his protection and provision is unending. Proverbs 3 says, for the Lord is your security. But let me ask you a question. Is he your source of security? I think better than asking you that is to ask you this question, is he your Lord? Because I want you to see in this text that the promise of this verse in verse eight is contingent on the first question.

And that is, is he Lord? Look at verse eight real quick. What does it say? The Lord will protect your coming and going both now and forever. We love this promise, but do we make him Lord? Because if this isn't true, then this won't be true. So how can Jesus become my source of security? How can he give me this right here? Just not for today, but for all of eternity. The question is, have you made him Lord? Have you trusted Jesus as Lord now? I'm talking about when times are good, when times are bad. Do you run to Jesus? Is he the net underneath you? Is he the source of security? Is he the shelter right next to you? Is he the Lord of your life today? Have you trusted Jesus as Lord forever? Have you trusted him in salvation? Have you trusted him in full surrender? Is he your heavenly father? Can you say with certainty that you are a child of the King? If you've never done that before, it's hard for you to wrap your mind around what it is for God to be your source of security. But you know what? I can do that for you right now. Would you bow your heads and close your eyes? I just wonder if there's someone in here today that says,

you know what? I've been around Jesus. I've heard about Jesus. I've even prayed to Jesus, but I've never. or fully surrendered to Jesus as Lord. But I want to ask him to save me, to change me, to make me new today. I want to allow Jesus to become the Lord of my life so that he can be my source of security right now and forevermore. If that's you, would you just pray right now and say, Jesus, I'm asking you to do something in my life that only you can do. I'm asking you to forgive my sins and to make me a child of the King. I'm asking you to save me once and for all. Lord, I don't want to go halfway in with you. I want to go all in with you. I want to trust you with everything that I am, everything. I hold nothing back.
