What It Takes to Take Territory
In his sermon, "What It Takes to Take Territory," Pastor Lyle explains that inhabitation is an inside job; attitude comes before action. What you think it takes to take territory may not be what it really takes; it's not about the giants keeping you out but how you see the giants. A different spirit means having a teachable spirit—humility, surrendering the mind, willingness to be corrected, lifelong growth, and learning from the Spirit. The quantity and quality of your inheritance is determined by who you become, not just what you do.
Well, I hope you've got your Bible today, either a physical copy or your phone, or you can read it off the screen. But we're going to open up to Numbers, the book of Numbers, chapter 14, verse 24. We're only going to be reading one verse of Scripture all together today. This is our pilot passage for our entire new sermon collection that we're calling Built Different, Built Different. This is the theme for our ninth year as a church, Built Different. And that catchphrase, I know it's a bit of a cultural colloquialism, but this phrase flows from Numbers chapter 14, verse 24. When God speaking says about his boy Caleb, he has a different spirit. And I don't know about you, but I want God to say that about me. Anybody else in the room? I want God to look at me and say, bro is built different. Just like he looked at Caleb. I want God to look at our church and say they move in a different spirit. That's what I'm believing to hear from God in 2026. Anybody else? So we're going to Numbers 14, verse 24. Once you've found that, if you don't mind, I won't keep you standing long, but would you stand to your feet for the reading of the Word of God? Numbers chapter 14, verse 24. When you're ready, say, I'm ready. The Bible says, but my servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit and has, I will bring into the land into which he went and his descendants shall possess it. Let's read it one more time. It's just one verse. But my Caleb, because he has a, and has, I will bring into the, into which he went and shall, amen. That's a good verse. What I want to do today is talk to you, uh, from the subject of what it really takes to
take territory. What it really takes to take territory. Lord, thank you for your everlasting and unchanging word. We know even though your word does not change, it always changes us. So we come before you today in humility and ask you for fresh bread, transform us today more into the image and nature and character of Christ Jesus. We want to be more like our creator. We love you, Jesus. And to all of this, the church said, amen. You can be seated. What it really takes to take territory, uh, all of last week, uh, which I think I got through about half of my notes, uh, I talked about that singular phrase, a different spirit, and it's so rich and packed with so much goodness. I'm going to take a whole nother week just to really examine those two words, a different spirit. Is that okay? Because I believe that what God is giving us, this church in 2026, let me say it like this. What I believe God is giving you in 2026 is a different spirit. You are built different. You're going to move different. You're going to flow different. And as a result of the posture of your heart, God is going to bring you into your promised lands. I don't know about you, but I plan on inhabiting in 2026. I plan on going into some places that God has spoken to me about in 2026. Anybody else in here know what I'm talking about? Am I talking to anybody that has some unfinished business in the kingdom of God? I'm talking about you've received some promises from God in your past, but you've yet to see all of them come to fruition.
Is that anybody in here? And you want to inhabit, you want to dwell in the place that you know God is calling you to go, but you're not there quite yet. That is the story of Caleb. And I love what happens in this singular verse of Scripture as God says, I am going to bring him into the land that he has already went. I don't know if you remember late last year, but I did a whole sermon collection on vision. Anybody remember that? Without a vision, the people perish, meaning we need a vision, amen? We need vision. Well, Caleb got vision for his future and for his family's future. future by taking a trip into the promised land and looking around and sampling some fruit and taking some notes on the size of the giants that were there. And he came back from that promised place with a report and a heart that was filled with faith that said, we are well able to overtake it. The problem was there was 12 spies that went in, 11 aside from Caleb and 10 of the 12 came back with a bad report. So they went into their future, they saw a vision, they had a vision of their future and they came back and they said, we're not able to do it. We're not able to inhabit, but what I am praying over this church is that God would give us a spirit like Caleb so that as we envision our prophetic future, as we receive words from God about where we're supposed to go, that we would not come back with a faithless report that is fueled by fear and say, God is calling me to some great things, but I'm not going to be able to make it to the other side. I just don't think I've got what it really takes to inhabit. I am believing that God would equip us as a church, as a body, as a spiritual family to be built different, to carry a different spirit so that we could testify to a good report of where God is. God is bringing us into, and we would have a heart filled with faith to say, I'm well able to overcome it.
The giants that are in that land, they're like grasshoppers rather than seeing ourselves like grasshoppers. They're like grasshoppers. They're like bread to us is what Caleb says later. Well, if you're going to be able to live like that and think like that and talk like that, you've got to be built different. You've got to have a different spirit if you're going to take territory, right? If you are going to take territory, you're going to have a, you're going to have to have a different spirit. Now, what we learned last week is that having a different spirit does not necessarily mean your skillset. All right? This is not about your detailed resume. That's not what gets you into the promised land in the kingdom of God. It's not all of the things that you have accomplished. It's not how cool you are. It's not how great you are. It's not all the stuff that you've done in your past, but it's actually the posture of your heart. It's not your skillset that brings you into your promised places. It's the disposition of your spirit. Are you with me? All right. I'm going to dive deeper into that today. Is that okay? You've got to have a different spirit. And today I want to put a little emphasis on different because what you think it's going to take to take territory may not actually be what it really takes to take territory. All right? Because you might be thinking, this is my skillset.
I've got to level up. I've got to work on my strengths. I've got to work on my weaknesses. I've got to get better. I've got to, you know, just continue to sharpen my skills. And I'm not saying you shouldn't do that, but whenever God looks at Caleb, he doesn't look at his skillset. He looks at his spirit. He looks at his attitude. He looks at his heart posture. So what you think it's going to take to take territory may not actually be what it really takes to take territory. You know what I mean? Like whenever you went to college, you said, okay, I know what it's going to take to graduate college, but then you got knee deep in academics and you realize, hold on, wait just a minute. What I thought was going to get me to a, you know, graduation ceremony. I think I'm going to need a little something more. You know what I'm talking about? I always grew up hearing this phrase in Kentucky, had to be somebody from Kentucky that said this first because it's so dumb and yet so smart. Well, you don't know what you don't know. You ever heard that before? Somebody said that to you. You don't know what you don't know. I'm like, that had to be from Kentucky. It's wise and yet it's so simple. I remember hearing my dad tell me as a kid, he'd say, son, when you don't know what to do, do what you know to do. I'm like, hold on, wait, does that make sense? Kentucky's got some wisdom for you, man.
You thought you knew what it would take to graduate college, but once you got into it, you learned what it really took. How many married folks I got in the room? Same goes for marriage. You thought you knew what it would take to have a happy, healthy, whole, connected marriage. Then you got about six months into it, you're like, hold on, wait, it's going to take some different stuff. Hold on. Maybe we need to read some books, watch some YouTube videos together. This is the same thing with parenting. Oh, I'm going to be the best parent ever. I'm going to be the best parent ever. My kids ain't going to act like that. I'm going to tell you right now. You see a kid out at the grocery store, you know, you nudge your fiancee, our kids ain't going to act like that. All right, I hear you. Easy to say when you ain't got none. You know, I see you let your kid have your phone at dinner. My kid ain't never going to see a screen. Okay, all right, yeah, yeah, okay. We'll see if you talk that talk whenever that kid... Like a year old How about this starting a business you started a business you're like I got what it takes I know what I'm doing I know how to make this happen. It's ain't no thing It ain't no problem, but you get deep into the business and you realize what got you here is not what's gonna get you there Are you hearing what I'm saying? You've got these prophetic promises from God and I want you to know that what got you here is not what's going to get you You may need something different than you expect to get you over into those promised places and by different I am meaning it's not about you sharpening your skill set
But it is about you allowing the spirit to shape your spirit All right, it's different. It's altogether different. It's not the way of the world. It's not what's visible that matters most. It's what's invisible Education is first and foremost an inside job When it comes to inheriting your promise places, it starts with your spirit not your skill set It's always internal before it is external mindset before movement All right, if you're gonna have movement you got work on your mindset so that your movements are correct There's nothing worse than working real hard on the wrong thing But if you don't let the spirit adjust your attitude before you get to work you may work on the wrong thing for years Because you think it's all about your hard work No It's about his work and if I can adjust my attitude to be in Alignment with his spirit then I can work on the right thing and I can move at the right pace Am I helping you or am I doing is this am I going too fast to start Are you guys? Okay In the kingdom attitude needs to come before action. All right, that's my point attitude needs to come before Action and this is something that I believe that God is speaking to us this year because this is a year where we're going to Take some territory This is a year where you are going to advance if you will agree with that just say amen You're gonna advance into your future. You're gonna advance into the good things that God has for you You're gonna take some territory this year one more time. If you agree just say amen It is time to move forward to move into the places of Promise, it's time to inhabit what you've been holding on to for years. I Don't know who I'm prophesying to but for some of you guys you've been holding on to something a promise God gave you years ago for some seasons and I want to prophesy 2026 you stepping into it Stuff you've been fasting for praying for believing God for open doors Opportunities, I'm not trying. I'm not just trying to gas you up. I'm trying to prophesy over you today I want you to agree with it and say yes and amen like I'm in I'm with you. I'm with you. Let's go
I'm believing for inhabitation this year. I'm not gonna keep wandering in the wilderness I'm gonna step into my prophetic destiny this year in Jesus name Come on that's the energy I'm on on the second Sunday of the new year. I'm gonna step into it this year This ain't gonna be a year that I wander. This ain't gonna be a year that I relent or I hold anything back There's gonna be a year. I move forward in Jesus name. Let's go. Come on. We can do it Encourage yourself in the Lord Are you with me? Well to inhabit you got to go but you also got to grow Because Inhabitation is not just about your skill set. It is about your spirit and you've got to have a different Spirit and I know when we think about inhabitation or taking territory or leveling up or moving forward It's very natural and it's very normal for us to think about big action all the things I'm gonna have to do I got to create a to-do list and that is important, but Inhabitation in the kingdom of God does not start with courageous action Courageous action. Oh Inhabitation in the kingdom of God does not start with courageous action. It starts with malleable attitude I mean, let me say it again It's very important. So I told you can be different everybody say different Because you because we think right like okay, it's gonna be courageous action I got to go and do all this stuff. And yes, you do you gonna have to do some stuff? You got to do some stuff but advancement in the kingdom does not begin with courageous action. It starts with Malleable attitude. I call it a supple spirit. It is a spirit is an attitude It is a heart posture that is humble able to be influenced by God and other people That's what I'm talking about in the kingdom of God attitude determines and habitation more than action The territory that you take in 2026 will be determined by the person that you become Better said, the person that you allow God to transform you into. The quantity and the quality of your inheritance will be determined by the measure of leader that you become. You guys getting anything out of this? One of the things you got to understand is that God moves differently.
God doesn't move like us. His ways are not our ways. His thoughts are not our thoughts. Whenever he spoke to Samuel the prophet, who never got a prophetic word wrong about who he was supposed to anoint, King David, he looked at everybody that should have been picked and God spoke to the prophet in 1 Samuel chapter 16. He said, do not consider his appearance or his height for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things that people look at. The world looks at your hands. The world looks at your skill set. The world looks at the things that you do that add value to their life. And that's great. That's awesome. But that's not what the Lord looks at first. The Lord doesn't look at outward appearance. The Lord looks at the heart. And so forgive me if this is not your typical set bigger goals speech on, you know, one of the first Sundays of a new year. But I want to encourage you not just to go this year, but I want to encourage you to grow this year so that you're able to inhabit and remain in the promised places that God is calling you to go. Because a sour spirit doesn't take territory. A complaining spirit doesn't take territory. A resistant spirit doesn't take territory. A hesitant spirit doesn't take territory. I remember my basketball coach when I was in high school used to tell me this and it stuck with me all these years. He said, he who hesitates is lost. I said, man, that's a good word right there. A hesitant spirit doesn't take territory.
Y'all know who had the green light in high school. I shot every time I touched the ball. Not hesitating coach. A hesitant spirit doesn't take territory. Neither does a haughty spirit. You know what that is? It's an arrogant spirit. Proverbs 16 says, pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before the fall. Ego does not allow you to take territory. And let me just say real quick, God does not have a problem with you having confidence. You are supposed to be confident in who he has called you to be. He don't have a problem with you thinking a lot of yourself based upon what he has spoken to you. The only thing I believe that God has a problem with is us thinking too little of others. It's okay for you to have confidence. Just don't have annoying ego where you're the best person in every single room that you walk into. That's a haughty spirit and it doesn't allow you to inhabit. You got to have a supple spirit. You got to have a humble heart. You got to have a heart posture and attitude that is open to being influenced by God first and foremost, and then other people that he puts on your path. I don't know if you guys have ever seen those old posters that would show up in offices in like 1987, but there was always an eagle on it and it'd be like flying over a lake and it would say something like, attitude determines altitude. I was thinking about that this way. I was like, I'm going to get one of them for my office, man. You know, because that is a true factual statement. In the kingdom, and it's like this at work too. Don't get it twisted.
Attitude determines access. I know you think it's your resume. I know you think it's like, boss, but look at all the stuff I did right. Yeah, but look at your heart posture. That is so wrong. Attitude creates atmosphere. Kids call it the vibe, right? It's a vibe check. All it is, is like when I get around you, what am I sensing? I'm sensing the attitude you got going on under the skin. I don't see it, but I feel it. I sense it and I just know I don't rock with it. And some of us go to work with a bad attitude. We do all the right things in the wrong spirit. And we're like, well, I'm submitting to my leader. No, you're not. Submission is about attitude, not action. You can do all the right things in the wrong spirit. Are you with me? And so what we want to get to today is down to the pay dirt of our soul and have the right attitude, not just take the right actions so that we can have access to the promised places that God wants to bring us into. Because God's not just bringing talent. to people into promised lands. He's bringing humble hearts. He's bringing people he can trust. It's very, very important that we understand this. So let's define what a different spirit is. If you look this up in the Hebrew, whenever God says about Caleb, he's got a different spirit. That word is Ruach. That's spirit. Arcaret. That is different. And so Hebrew Ruach means spirit or inner disposition. It can also mean attitude. Everybody say attitude. Arcaret is Hebrew for another or of a different kind. Everybody say unique. So a different spirit than defined is a distinct inner disposition. It is a distinct inner disposition, AKA another
kind of attitude altogether. And so first and foremost, having a different spirit is about having an attitude that pleases God. All right, let me say it again. Having a different spirit first and foremost is about having an attitude. Everybody say attitude. That does what? Pleases God. Have you ever pondered what type of attitude is the attitude that brings joy to God? What type of heart posture do I need to possess in order to bless the heart of God? Have you ever considered that before? Because it's really important that we think about what kind of heart posture does heaven consider irresistible? We know in second Chronicles, the Bible says that the eyes of the Lord are searching to and fro the earth, looking for what? A heart posture that is fully given to God. And then God says, when I find someone who has a heart posture, I'm not talking about being religious. I'm not talking about confessing me with your lips. God is saying this, but your heart, there's that verse, is what? Far from me. So God sees it different. You can do all the right things according to religious people and yet be withholding your heart from God together. Are you guys getting anything out of this? Okay. I just had to check. I wasn't sure. You guys are a little quiet. And I know like when you start talking about attitude, man, Christians are like, chill. All right. I would love an index card where you give me steps. And I've realized this. I've been in ministry now for 20 years. And here's what I realized. That if you give Christians actions, they will get excited. Like if you give them a memo card and you say, here are seven steps to success, they will work at least a little bit to enact those things. But if you start talking to them about their attitude and their heart disposition and how they're unwilling to be influenced by the word of God to change the way that they think and see life, you better get ready for a fight, baby. They're like, uh-uh. I'm going to let you tweak my actions, but I'm not going to let you touch my attitude, my heart's disposition and the posture of my spirit is my business. Thank you very much, pastor. Are you, are you with me? Or did it, was that the thing that you were like, no, we checking out now? The problem is, is that most Christians don't know the difference between being trainable and being teachable. Being trainable is everything to do with your actions. Being teachable has everything to do with your attitude. People are like, I'm, I'm teachable. I'm teachable. I'm teachable. You tell me what you want and I'll do it. You're, you're referring to your actions. Being teachable has nothing to do with your actions. That
is being trainable. If I can show you what to do and then you do it, that is a training session. It's different if we're saying, and we want to do this with the word of God, obviously. Amen. Amen. Because we're a church, not a cult. Come on, we need to remember that in 2026. All right. A cult gathers around the man of God. A church gathers around the word of God. This ain't about me telling you what to do. This is about me pointing you to God's word and saying, let's think in according to the scripture. Let's build our life on the rock. Let's stand on truth. That's what I'm trying to encourage. Just want to clear that up. But a lot of people don't know the difference. Like, oh, well, no, I'm teachable. No, you're trainable. You've actually got to open up your heart to be influenced. And this is a skill set that is actually quite rare. So rare. In fact, that Caleb is the only person that God said this about in spite of the fact that Joshua also got into the promised land. He didn't say this about Joshua. He only said this about Caleb. And here's what makes this so incredible. Is that at the time the population of God's people Israel was about two? million people that's a lot of folks and God spoke to Moses and Moses told the people I want you guys to pick out 12 leaders. Everybody say leaders I want to make sure you get it because these are not some bums These are not like randoms. They didn't win a lottery Well, you've been chosen to it was like a Hunger Games, you know, you have been chosen You got to go into the promised land and face the Giants. No, it was not that situation It was like take your 12 tribes and find a guy. That is an exemplary Exceptional leader because we're about to send him into our future Are you with me? So they picked out out of 2 million people. They picked out 12 leaders So this should start to detail how unique a different spirit really is. Most people are not teachable They postulate like they are they tell you that they are they might pretend that they are but deep down their hearts are unable to Be influenced by anybody but themselves I'm trainable not teachable. And so they find these 12 they send these 12 in all of them come back There's only two that are going to go into the promised land which by the way takes 45 years 45 years. I don't know who I'm talking to that's been holding on to a promise for 45 years But this is one of the attributes of having a different spirit
God may have spoke to you about that thing four seasons ago four years ago 48 years ago I don't know how long you've been holding on to your vision of God's intended future for your life But a different spirit says I ain't letting go I'll wander if I gotta wander I'll wait if I gotta wait but I know where God is sending me into and you better believe I'm gonna make it there because I'm gonna protect my heart posture and I'm gonna be built different and I'm gonna walk in a different spirit until I get over to the other side So out of those 12 leaders everybody say leaders You got to get these are leaders and this is this has been my experience after two decades in ministry even leaders Ain't nobody gonna tell me what to do. I'm the man of God around here. I'm gonna tell you right now Tell me you ain't heard that I don't know how long you've been living for God, but I'm sure you've run up against an arrogant Christian I'm gonna do it my way. I'm gonna do things my way That's the way it go around here my way of the highway. You don't like it get out You guys ain't been in church as long as me I can tell right now because I have heard all of that stuff Oh, even amongst leaders It was only two out of the twelve that had a supple spirit they had a malleable spirit They had a heart that was open to being influenced. They didn't walk around like a spiritual know-it-all. I Know what's going down? I got the revelation. God done spoke to me. I have the interpretation. I know what's up I'm gonna tell you how the church needs to be run a Different spirit is a teachable Spirit. All right. That's what I want to get into as I close a different spirit Ultimately is a teachable spirit and the reason why I hit on this Population of 2 million and these 12 leaders is because as I read the Jewish commentaries about this passage of Scripture the one thing that rabbis would continually harp on is the rarity of a different spirit it was so Rare, and that's what I want to acknowledge. Even today is that most people are not teachable The trainable, but they're not teachable. They'll give you their their hands, but they'll withhold their heart Why am I telling you this because we will be a house
That is teachable We will be all of us. Come on everybody. We will be a house that is built different this year We will be a house that will have a heart that is open to being influenced from God. God speak to me. I Don't I don't think that I got it all figured out God speak to me correct me where I'm wrong rebuke me when necessary I don't want to despise discipline God reprove me. I want to be your child Speak to me. Are you with me? If you can't handle any more correction you are done advancing The distance between you and your promised land is rebuke A lot of people don't go into promised places and they say well there's Giants in there and the biggest giant fighting you every single day is the one whose teeth you brush looking in the mirror every morning because it's not necessarily about the territory that you need to possess that makes this difficult it's how you think about the territory that God's calling you to possess that makes this difficult you need a mind setter as my dad used to tell me boy you need an attitude adjustment a haughty spirit ain't gonna go in a salty spirit ain't gonna go in and a sour spirit ain't gonna go in that's not how it works you know what other kind of spirit ain't gonna go in a victim spirit it's all it's always somebody else's fault I'm not inhabited it's always somebody else's fault that's the reason why I don't have God's promises active in my life is because there is some giant that's actively pushing back against me and so I'm not able to I'm not able to step into the place of victory because there's somebody holding me back listen last night my son has started to play basketball y'all he's 10 he's playing basketball for the first time and I just told you that I played basketball in high school and it really wasn't that good for my soul so I was like honestly bro like you don't even got to play basketball you're just gonna do jujitsu I don't know that that's gonna be better for his soul like choking people out but we had to try something different you know cuz I want him to be built different so my boy he started to play basketball and he's not in here is he
he's getting better and I want to encourage him cuz he's doing awesome but it's his first year ever playing basketball right it's first year it's 10 it's first year he hasn't ever played before proud of my guy so I came back from a trip yesterday I had the privilege of preaching at deeper fellowship in Orlando Florida dear friend of mine pastor William McDowell awesome man of God and so we came back we did do an extra day at Disney World so sorry not sorry but we came back on Saturday evening and I said son I said come sit with me while we're having dinner and tell me about your basketball game and he came and he sat down and I said bro how did it go he said we lost I said oh man I'm so sorry that you guys lost and the very next thing that he said he said yeah it was the refs in this just this is the human spirit man it's like he has played four basketball games in his life and he has already learned how to blame the loss on the refs he said they made a terrible call dad at the very end of the game and and we ended up losing in overtime by five points and I said son I am really sorry that you lost your basketball game are you good he said yeah yeah I'm good I said well I want you to look at me in the eyes because I need to tell you something important and so he looked up at me I said listen son you're gonna win in life you're gonna lose in life what I'm talking to you about right now has nothing to do with basketball this has to do with life if every time you lose you blame somebody else you're not gonna be able to advance into the places God God has called you to go and I understand the ref made a may have made a bad call I missed your game today because I was in Florida I've been at every other game three of them and I've seen that ref he's trash that dude does not need to be reffing no basketball game he's garbage he's the worst ref I've ever seen in my life bro I ain't even lying to you he's bad and he said that that's what I'm talking about I said but son you need to think about it different you you're blaming it on the ref for the fact that you lost how about you think about it in such a way that next game you don't give the ref the opportunity to make a bad call at the end because you're up by so
much if every time you lose in life you are Looking for somebody to place the blame on aside from yourself. I'm not saying bad things don't happen. Of course they do I'm not saying we ain't gonna have to fight some Giants We may lose some battles in the midst of winning the war Of course, there's going to be some Giants that provide some opposition But if every time you lose you blame it on somebody else rather than looking at it as an opportunity to get better You're not going to be able to advance and take the territory that God's called you to go into Because the people who take territory are people who are built different They're not people who blame it on the ten spies. Well, they had a bad report. So I didn't get to go in Well, okay. We'll kick those people out of your life and keep it moving. I Can't figure out why I'm not a stop hanging out with the ten Have a teachable spirit a Teachable spirit ultimately is this it is one who is able to be influenced All right. Let me tell you again. Let me say it again a Teachable spirit is a heart posture and an attitude that's open to being influenced That's all it is I'm open to being influenced. I'm open to hearing God's perspective. I'm opening I'm open to listening to the word on this thing that I hold true This is what I believe and this is what I think and these are my convictions And this is a teachable spirit just says I'm open to being influenced. What is how does God want me to think about this? That right there church that right there attitude when it comes to inhabitation attitude is more important than action Attitude provides access to promised places or it revokes it That's why that's why I started from from the beginning what got you here is not gonna get you there You may be thinking I know what it's gonna take to possess the promised lands It's gonna take big action. And what I'm telling you is it's different. It's different than you might think it's not about action first first It's about attitude and we've got to have an attitude that says I'm open to being influenced You with me?
