The Language of Miracles

We're simply calling it miracles. And in this series, we're committed to helping you learn everything you need to know about some of the greatest miracles of the Bible. We're also gonna answer some of your hardest questions about miracles, but more importantly than any of that. We're actually gonna raise our faith. We're gonna get our hope up in a God who performs miracles 'cause we're believing God's gonna do miracles even in this series. Come on, somebody, it's time to believe for it. And I know there are some of you today. Some of you today who would say, I need one. I need, I need a miracle in my life. And if that's you, I would just challenge you. Don't miss a single week, a single week of this series. I think God's gonna use it to inspire your faith. And I think He's gonna use it to do incredible works here in our church and in our lives. This idea of miracles though is kind of a different idea for a lot of us. Like a lot of us just kind of toss around the word miracles. You know, we just kind of attach a miracle to anything. Like somebody might say, well, it's a miracle that we made it to church on time today. Anybody? Yeah. It's like that's a miracle or you might say something like this. It's a miracle. My wife went to Target and only spent $150.

That's a miracle, you know? See how it works? You just kind of, you know, it's a miracle. My kids have been in school for two weeks and I've yet to get a phone call from the principal's office. That's a miracle. It's a miracle I had clean underwear to put on this morning 'cause I had an laundry in three weeks, you know? It's a miracle. It's a miracle that my check engine light went off on its own in my car. That's a miracle. Or maybe it just burned out. Who knows, you know? It's a miracle. The Dallas Cowboys, every win a football game. That's a miracle. They always be everybody. It's football season. Let's go. You see how we do it? We just throw these things out. These miracles out as if all of those things are miracles. But when you read about miracles in the Bible, you discover that they are very specific examples of God's might and his power. In fact, I wanna show you our theme verse for the scripture, for the series. And the reason we do these theme verses, by the way,

is so that you can start to put God's word in your heart off the pages of the Bible and right into your heart. And so I hope you'll memorize this one with me over the coming weeks. It's such a powerful verse from Psalm chapter 77 where the psalmist says this, "Your ways God are holy. "What God is as great as our God." And the answer is there ain't one. Hello, there's duh. No God is as great as our God. And now what you're gonna read this next part with me out loud everybody, the underlying part. Say it with me. You are the God who performs miracles. Say it one more time. You are the God who performs miracles. You display your power among the peoples. And I love that little line we all read together. You are the God who performs miracles. God is a miracle working, miracle performing God. It's one of the things that God does. You're like, what does God do? Well, one of the things he does is he performs miracles. Now, what is a miracle? I gave you some silly examples of a miracle, but are those really miracles? Like is it really a miracle when we get somewhere on time? Is it really a miracle when we pull up and we get a front row parking spot at the Costco?

Is that really a miracle? Is it really a miracle when your teenager cleans their own room without you, without you threatening to take their phone? I mean, is that really a miracle? And the answer would be no, those aren't real miracles. To me, some of you would be like, well, you didn't see my teenager's room, okay, okay. So maybe that is a miracle, but a real miracle is something different. And I wanna show you a definition. I actually really, really love this definition of a miracle. A miracle is this. It's a less common kind of God's activity in which he arouses peoples all in wonder and bears witness to himself. And that's the definition we're gonna use all series long. It's a less common kind of God's activity. So some people would say, well, it's a miracle that you're breathing today. It's a miracle that your heart is beating. It's a miracle when the sun sets or the sun rises. Those are miracles. It's a miracle that you woke up this morning. Every moment is a miracle. And by the way, if you got a little coffee cup at home that says every moment is a miracle, you don't have to go home and throw it away, all right? But you do need to know that that's not really accurate.

That's not really true. 'Cause all of those examples, those aren't really biblical miracles. Now those are all works of God. Like all of those things require God. because God is always working. Now I need you to understand this. We call this the providence of God, that God sovereignly rules, governs, sustains, and guides his creation all the time. That just means that God didn't create the world and remove himself from it. God didn't wind up the world like a clock and just let it run on its own. That's not the way God works. God is actively involved in the world in which he created. That's called the providence of God. So it's God who makes your heartbeat, and it's God who makes the sunrise, and it's God who sometimes sees fit to give you a good parking spot at them all. Thank you God, that's awesome. But that's just God working as God works. That's just God doing what God does. However, there are times in which God works in less common or more unusual ways. Sometimes he even overrides or supersedes the laws of nature in order to bring about or exert his will. And when that happens, it is a miracle. And he is a God who performs miracles.

And some of you today would say, "I need one. "I need a miracle. "I need a miracle to beat this cancer diagnosis." 'Cause I need a less common activity. I don't just need the God who keeps my heart beating and my blood flowing to show up in this situation. I need a less common activity of God in my life. Some of you would say, "I need a miracle. "I need a miracle to save my marriage." A normal work of God is not gonna save my marriage. It is run off the rails way too far. I would need a miracle now to save my marriage. Some of you would say, "Hey, the only thing "that can get me out of the financial mess "that I'm in today would be a miracle of God, "a less common act of God." For some of you, the only thing that can heal your mind or break an addiction or calm your anxiety, you've tried everything else. The only thing that would work now would be a miracle. For some of you, you're praying for your one more, one more person who is near to you, but far from God and His church. And you know, "Hey, I've invited that person. "I've talked to that person. "I've shared my testimony with that person. "That person's been given verses or scriptures." And none of us worked, none of us helped. None of us brought them to Jesus yet. You know for that person to come to faith in Jesus Christ,

it would take a miracle. And then there are some of you who are facing circumstances that on your own, you know, I can't walk through these or you're up against some odds that just seem insurmountable and you don't just need the normal working of God in your life. You need a less common kind of God's activity. That would be a miracle. You need a miracle in your life and my job in this series is to try to stir up your faith to believe God for what you need and to expect Him to do it in your life 'cause He is the God of miracles. How many of you believe God can perform a miracle right now in your life to meet every needs you have? I believe it. I believe it. And I believe we're gonna see it in this series. So let your hope rise. Let your faith rise. The psalmist said it this way. "Give thanks to the Lord of hosts. "His love endures forever to Him alone "who does great wonders His love endures forever." And then in the book of Exodus, the Bible says, "Who among the gods is like you, Lord? "Who is like you majestic in holiness? "Awesome in glory, working wonders." And anytime you see this little word wonders or sometimes you'll see it signs and wonders or sometimes you'll even see the little phrase

mighty acts of God. Anytime we see those phrases throughout the Bible, it's referring to a miracle, a less common act of God in the world in which He already is involved. In fact, I was inspired really to preach this series of messages back in the spring when I was reading through the book of Acts and I read across this verse, a verse I've seen a lot of times, but it just stuck out to me in a different kind of way where it's talking about the first century church or that early church. And the Bible says this, that everyone in the church, everyone kept feeling a sense of all. And look at what happened. Many wonders and signs, many, many miracles were taking place through the apostles. Now do you remember the definition of a miracle? 'Cause I told you that miracles arouse a sense of all, And so, what we saw in the early church is that as miracles were being performed, people sensed all. They had a sense of wonder at all of the different miracles that I'm praying that God would do it again in our midst, that He'd do it again in our church, that He'd do it again in our lives. Now, of course, you know this already, but the Bible is full of miracle stories, accounts of miracles.

And every single week of this series, we're gonna actually study a different miracle in the Bible. We're gonna mind the details out of those miracles and learn from them ourselves. The scholars record somewhere around 180 distinct miracles, signs and wonders that are recorded for us in scripture of those. Jesus performed 37 of them recorded for us in the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. So it's like page after page after page. You run across all of these different miracles, especially as you study the life of Jesus. By the way, perhaps the most famous and certainly one of the most referenced miracles of the Bible is one you probably are familiar with. I hope you know about it. It's called the miracle, the parting of the Red Sea. Y'all know about that one? Where the Israelites are escaping Egyptian captivity and the Egyptians are chasing after them in order to capture them and bring them back and they get to the edge of the Red Sea, the sea that is now creating for them a barrier. Now they're stuck between the sea and their enemies. And God does the amazing, the less common kind of activity. God supersedes the laws of nature and God parts the Red Sea. And the Israelites walk across the Red Sea on dry ground and when they are safely on the other side, as their enemies are coming to capture them,

God unparts the Red Sea and the Red Sea swallows up their enemies. That's awesome miracle. And it's recorded for us right there in scripture, one of the most famous of all miracles. And maybe you've found yourself wondering at times, well, could God still do that? Could God still part the sea? How many times have you sat on the tunnel? (congregation laughing) Think it to yourself. You shout out Virginia Beach campus. Can I just say, I have thought on more than one occasion if God would just part the bay, we would need the tunnel and we could get to Virginia Beach and have the amount of time. It'd be pretty awesome. But the reality is I do believe, look at me everybody, you need to know this. I'm crazy enough to believe God could do it again. He could do it again if he chooses, if he chooses. But something I need you to know as we kick off this series of messages is that many times the miracles of the Bible are for a unique, specific one-time purpose, which means they don't get repeated over and over again. God does the miracle to accomplish His purpose. In this instance, God's purpose was to save the Israelites and to swallow up their enemies. That was God's purpose.

Unless you got the Egyptian army chasing behind you while you sit in traffic at the tunnel, probably shouldn't count on God's part and see. I'm just saying, 'cause he did it once for a specific purpose. It's not that he's gonna repeat that and do it all over again. But now we have that miracle. That miracle is recorded for us as all the other miracles are. They're recorded for us in Scripture to build our faith so that we will now believe God for our own miracle and so that others will believe in God. In fact, the Psalmist talked about God parting the sea and Psalm 78, this is what the Psalmist says about that miracle. He says, "We will not hide them, the miracles, "the miracle of God parting the sea and others. "We will not hide them from their descendants. "We will tell the next generation "the praise worthy deeds of the Lord, "His power and His wonders, and what He has done." So we've got the miracles now to share with others. We've got the miracles recorded for us and we're gonna tell about them over and over and over again. Did you know this is why one of the things that we teach the most. are the miracles of Jesus and the miracles of the Bible. Because what we're trying to do, parents, look at me, one of the greatest things you can do for your kids

is to tell them the miraculous works, the wonders and signs of God from the past. Teach them the Bible stories of the miracles of God. Because what we're trying to do is to build in them big faith for their own miracle. We're trying to show our kids that there is nothing that God cannot do. He can part the sea. He can save Jonah with the big fish. He can make the walls of Jericho fall down with just a shout. He can make the sun stand still. He can bring a dead Lazarus back to life. He can make the blind see in the lame walk. He can make the storm stop. He can turn the water into wine because God can perform miracles. And why would I teach my kids that? Because I want them to know there's nothing he cannot do in their life. If he did it back then, he'll do it again. Will it look the same? No, no, but we have a miracle working God. This almost continues and says, tell them these miracles, so that, look at it, so that the next generation would know them, know what, know the miracles. Even the children yet to be born. And they in turn would tell their children. And then here's the result. And this is always the result of miracles. Then they would put their trust in God

and would not forget his deeds, but would keep his commands. That's the purpose of the recorded miracles. And that's why we talk about the miracles to other people. And that's why we tell our kids and their kids, the miracles, so that they would put their trust in God, so that they would never forget the work of God. And so that they would keep his commands. So the miracles of the Bible aren't necessarily there because God wants to repeat them in our lives. If you brought a little sack lunch of, you know, five loaves and three chicken nuggets today, don't expect that God's going to turn around and multiply that to feed all of us. He could, but he probably won't. But he does want that miracle to build your faith, to make you believe that God can provide for you even when it doesn't seem possible. 'Cause he's done it before. So he can do it again. Are y'all understand what I'm saying? The miracles don't get repeated, but they build our faith. So the parting of the Red Sea, it's probably the most famous miracle, but I want to go on record today as we kick off this message series to help you know that the most important of all miracles, like the miracle of all miracles. The miracle that we should be most grateful for today is number one, the incarnation of Christ,

God becoming man, that's a miracle. And the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ coming back from the dead. Those are the two greatest miracles of all time. And those are the miracles that have forever, forever changed our lives. So we're getting real about miracles that I'm fired up about it. Now here's what I recognize and I know that a lot of us today have a hard time. We have a hard time believing in miracles. And maybe the reason you have a hard time believing in miracles is because you've seen that idea of miracles abused before, or maybe you've seen somebody stretch a truth and call it a miracle, or maybe you have a hard time believing for miracles because you've prayed for one and not gotten it. You've prayed for one and not seen it. In fact, let's just do this. Let's just all take off our church face for a minute and be real for just a second, can we? I know that's dangerous in church, but let's just try it together, can we? How many of us have prayed for a miracle believed even for a miracle and you haven't received that miracle yet? Would you just be honest enough to raise your hand? Just look around 'cause that's most people in the room today and probably online today. We've prayed for a miracle.

We haven't received the miracle and it causes us now to not believe in miracles. And I think God wants to turn that around starting today. I think, look at me everybody. God wants you to get your faith up again. God wants you to get hope in your heart again. That God is the God, but I wouldn't say performed in past tense. Our theme verse says he is the God who performs miracles. He still does miracles and I want to try to teach you as we kick off the series. I wanna teach you the language of miracles, the language of miracles. If I were to take you on a trip today and we were to go to some foreign country and I were to try to introduce you to a new culture, a culture that you aren't familiar with, maybe even a culture that you aren't comfortable in, one of the first things you would need to do is learn the language. You need to know the language that you're stepping into. It's how you would understand the culture, it's how you would assimilate into the atmosphere, it's how you would understand what's happening around you if you learn the language. And today that's really what I'm trying to do, I'm trying to take you on a journey. And we're not gonna finish the journey today, we're just getting started y'all, we're just starting the journey.

But I'm gonna try to take you to a new country, a country full of miracles. And I'm gonna try to introduce you to the world of miracle, to a world of possibilities that maybe you've never even known or thought about, maybe even though it existed. Maybe you thought, hey, this is like ancient, but not modern, but I'm gonna take you there in this journey. And I'm gonna introduce you to a world of miracles. But to get there and really understand it, to get the context and the culture and to assimilate into this new world where miracles happen around us, we have to know the language of miracles. And so I wanna try to teach it to you today, 'cause if you need a miracle, you need to know the language. And we're gonna learn it today from an Old Testament miracle recorded for us in the book of Daniel. We call this the miracle of the fiery furnace, the miracle of the fiery furnace. I thought somebody would be fired up about this miracle, the miracle of the, sometimes I forget, y'all didn't go to vacation Bible school when y'all were growing up, did ya? Huh? Y'all didn't go to Sunday school. Y'all didn't learn about these miracles. So I'm honored to get to teach it to you.

For some of you, the very first time today, you're gonna hear about the miracle of the fiery furnace. It's one of the most amazing miracles recorded for us in all of scripture. And the Bible tells us about this miracle because the king of Babylon, a king by the name of Nebuchadnezzar who was quite fixated on himself, he was a bit of a narcissist king. King Nebuchadnezzar built a golden statue. It stood almost 90 feet tall, it was about nine feet wide. And the king said to everyone in the kingdom, he said, I'm gonna make everyone, everyone bow down and worship this golden statue. I want you to worship this golden image, this idol as if it is a God. And he made a decree and he said, if you don't, if you don't, you're gonna be thrown into the blazing hot fiery furnace. In fact, I want you to see the audacity of the king. I want you to see what he says. This is his command, he says. But if you do not worship it, the golden image, if you do not worship it, you'll be thrown immediately into a blazing furnace. And then he asked this question, the audacity. He says, then what God will be able to rescue you from my hand? Here's a king who thinks he's greater than God.

And a king who says, what God could ever rescue you from my hand, you'll do what I say, you'll bow down and you'll worship this golden statue. Now, if you don't know how the miracle goes, let me bring you up to speed. There's three Hebrew boys, they're just teenagers, just teenage boys. And if you grew up in the age of my kids, you grew up watching VeggieTales and you learned their names like this, Rakshak and Beni, all right, that's how you would have learned them on VeggieTales. But their names actually are Shadrach, Meshach and Abendigo, all right? Rakshak and Beni, Shadrach, Meshach and Abendigo, just three teenage boys, young boys, Hebrew boys who loved the Lord and who knew the scriptures and the commands and knew this, I will not bow, I will not bow to worship any other God. And they knew not to show allegiance or worship to any other, to any other God. So they actually stood up, stood up to the king. And they did it speaking the language of miracles. We're about to learn, I'm so excited about this, we're about to learn the language of miracles from three teenage boys. Now that is, that might actually be a miracle. If you're not laughing, you never raised it. But these three teenage boys are about to teach us the language of miracles.

This is what the Bible says. "Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied to the king. King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, this is the language of miracles, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from your majesty's hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know your majesty that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold that you've set up. They spoke the language of miracles, and they would not bow down to the golden image." And the Bible says this, "Then Nebuchadnezzar was furious with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and his attitude toward them changed. He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and throw them into the blazing furnace." So these men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, wearing their robes, trousers, turbans, and other clothes were bound and thrown into the blazing furnace. The king's command was so urgent and the furnace so hot that the flames of the fire killed the soldiers who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. And these three men firmly tied, fell into the blazing furnace. Then King Nebuchadnezzar leaped to his feet in amazement and asked his advisors, "Weren't there three men that we tied up and threw into that fire?" They replied, "Certainly your majesty." The king said, "Look, I see four men walking in the fire unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like the son of the gods." And Nebuchadnezzar then approached the opening of the blazing furnace and shouted, "Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, servants of the Most High God, come out, come here." So Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego came out of the fire and the satraps, prefects, governors, and royal advisors crowded around them. They saw that the fire had not harmed their bodies, nor was a hair of their heads singed. Their robes were not scorched, and there was no smell of fire on them. That was a miracle, everybody. A less common act. A less common act of God's work. They were not harmed. They were not burned. They didn't even smell like the scent of fire. You couldn't even know by looking at them that they had just been thrown into the blazing hot firey furnace. You would have never known that they had just been tied up, put to a point of death. A firey furnace. Listen, you know it's a miracle because it killed the guys that didn't even get in the fire, and yet here they are safe and sound in the firey furnace. This was a less common kind of God's activity, and from this miracle account, these three teenage boys teach us some language that I want to make sure you get today. It's two simple phrases. I want to teach it to you as we kick off

the series own miracles. Phrase one goes like this. God is able. God is able. Would you say it with me, everybody? God is able. I'm trying to teach you the language of miracles, and the only way to learn it is by saying it one more time. Say it with me. God is able. This is what the three teenage boys said, that God is able. He's able. He's able to save us. This is the language of miracles. Miracles begin with a belief that God is able, that there is no lack of power with God. There are no restrictions on God. There are no limitations on God. Nothing is too hard for God. God is able. Jesus said it like this. Jesus said with man, this is impossible, but with God, all things are possible because God is able. God is able to heal you of cancer. God is able to restore your marriage. God is able to break you free from an addiction. God is able to calm your spirit and give you a peace that passes all understanding in your heart. God is able, there is no lie. He is the God who performs miracles. God is able. The Apostle Paul said it like this. Now to him, who is able to do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine God is able. This is the language of miracles. And when you need a miracle, God is able. You gotta believe for it. You gotta believe for it. You gotta have faith for it. You gotta be confident like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego that God is able because miracles cannot happen in the absence of faith. You're gonna see that all series. That miracles cannot happen in the absence of faith. So if you need a miracle, start speaking the language of miracles. God is able. Say it with me one more time everybody.

God is able. Now let me teach you the second phrase. Straight from the mouths of these three Hebrew boys who speak the language of miracles. The first phrase was God is able. The second phrase is this. But even if. But even if. Say the second phrase with me everyone. But even if. Come on one more time, all the voices. But even if. He's able to perform the miracle. But even if he doesn't, he's able. I'm not doubting it. I know he's able. But even if he doesn't heal my cancer, even if he doesn't restore my marriage, even if he doesn't break me free from this addiction, even if I am still in debt, even if I didn't sleep last night because I'm overcome by anxiety, he's able. And he's able demonstrates this. It demonstrates that I believe in God's unlimited ability. God is able. But even if demonstrates that I don't worship God for what he does, I worship him for who he is. He is able, but even if. Does he still do miracles? Yes, he does.

Yes, he does. He is able. But even if he doesn't, I'll still worship him. I'll still love him. I'll still serve him. I'll still believe in him. I'm still not bow down to your statue, O King, because I still believe God is faithful, even if. This is the language of miracles. Now I wanna make sure you get this, because just because we believe for it doesn't mean it's gonna happen. And this is where a lot of us get hung up. 'Cause we've gotten hung up on the even if and it's caused us to stop believing God is able. I put God is able first 'cause that's the overriding truth. God is able. And whether or not he meets your need and whether or not he comes through for you with your miracle, it has no bearing of God's ability. God is still able. But sometimes God doesn't give us the miracles. Many of us raised our hands earlier to say God hasn't given us the miracle we prayed for. Sometimes God doesn't give us a miracle for a different reason. And I don't know all the reasons. Sometimes it's not his timing. Sometimes it doesn't align with his purpose.

Sometimes God's got a greater purpose. As you know, the Bible says that his ways and his thoughts are higher than your ways and your thoughts. That means God knows things that you cannot know. That means God is smarter than you. Hello, thank God for that. Thank you, God. You don't want to God that you can understand. You don't want to God that you can explain. There are things God does that only God knows. That only God knows why. That only God can control there. Things God does that you and I can never truly understand. That doesn't put a limitation on God, though. God is still able. But a person speaking the language of miracles knows. Yes, God is able, but even if, but even if, and I'm teaching this today in part one, because I'm believing that God's going to perform miracles in the series. I'm believing for it. I fully expect that by the time we get to the end of the series, we will hear stories of healing in our church. I fully expect it. I fully expect for addictions to be broken. In fact, I felt this so strong in my spirit that somebody in our church is addicted to alcohol. And by the time we get to the end of this series, you won't even be able to stomach the taste of it.

I'm believing for it. I'm praying for it in faith, believing God is able. God can, God can take it away. I believe for it. So I want you to show up believing God, expecting God, getting your hopes up in a God who is able, God is still good, God's still in control, God's still able to do miracles. And I'll still worship him. This is the language of miracles. It's the language of miracles. God is able, but even if. One more time. Would you say it with me everybody? God is able, but even if. The language of miracles. And by the way, maybe you're wondering, does the miracle of fiery furnace, that story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, does that miracle recorded to mean something to me? Do we have that, like, we don't expect God to repeat that miracle. So what does that miracle do to build my faith? Well, the Bible says there's a fourth man in the fire. Scholars will talk about how they interpret that fourth man in the fire. Some would argue, I was an angel that God sent, but most scholars, and I would agree, that most scholars believe that that fourth man in the fire is the pre-incarnate form of Jesus Christ himself. That it was Jesus in the fire. With Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. So what does that mean to me? It just means this, that God is able to get you out of the fire.

Yes, he is. You're walking through a difficult season right now. You're in a traumatic situation. You're dealing with trouble that seems too much for you to handle. God is able to get you out of the fire. But even if he doesn't, God will be with you in the fire. See, some people read this miracle and they think, "Hey, the miracle is these three boys came out of the fire, untouched, unharmed." Yeah, that's a miracle. I agree. But it is just as much of a miracle that the fourth man went in the fire with him. In fact, I heard one of my favorite preachers say it like this. How many people went in the fire? Three. How many people were in the fire? Four. How many people came out of the fire? Three. That means there's still one person in the fire to walk through it when you get in the fire. His name is Jesus. You don't have to walk through it alone. That's a miracle and it's up itself. So get your faith up, your hope up today. In a God who still does miracles, God is able, but even if. I want to help you believe it today. I want to help you believe it for your life and for your situation and for your need that God is able, but even if. Now we know the language of miracles. So why don't we do this together? Would you stand all across the room and even joining us wherever you are online?

I want to invite you to stand your feet. One of the greatest ways I believe to build our faith in the God who does miracles is through worship. It's part part of why we sing the songs we sing as we come in because we're worshiping God. Yes, we're giving him worship, but in doing so we're building our own faith in the God who does miracles. So today our team is going to teach you a brand new song that's all about the God who performs miracles and the miracle we're believing for in this series over your life and over my life.
