Strongholds Vs. Demons: Discerning What You're Dealing With

What's up family and welcome to video number four, strongholds versus demons, discerning what you're dealing with and welcome back. I want to start by saying something that might surprise you coming from a person who operates in deliverance. Not everything is a demon. I know this is not what you expected to hear in a deliverance course, but this session might be the most important one we do because the mark of a mature minister is not how many demons you can cast out. It is knowing when you are dealing with a demon and when you're dealing with a stronghold. If you confuse the two, you will either try to cast out something that needs to be torn down or you will try to renew your mind against something that needs to be expelled. Second Corinthians chapter 10 verse three through five gives us the foundational text on strongholds. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh for the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments in every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. So the word stronghold in this verse is the Greek word, and again I'm pronouncing it to the best of my ability, akourima, which means a fortified place, a castle, a fortress. So again, a stronghold is a castle, fortress, or fortified place. It comes from the root word echo, meaning to have or to hold. A stronghold is a fortified thought pattern that holds you. It is a belief system or an echo, a mental fortress, a way of thinking that has been reinforced over time until it feels like truth, even when it contradicts the word of God is actually, I'm sorry, it feels like the lie becomes truth even when it contradicts the word of God. So notice when Paul says we are casting down arguments, which is the word in the Greek lagosmos, meaning reasons, calculations, and thought processes, and every high thing, which is the word in the Greek hapsoma, meaning elevated structure, that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, that this is a battle in the mind.

These are thought structures, not demons. Thought structures, and here's the critical distinction. A demon has a personality and a will. A stronghold is a belief system. A demon needs to be cast out by authority. A stronghold needs to be torn down by truth. Again, a demon needs to be casted out by authority, but a stronghold needs to be torn down by truth. Let me give you a practical example. A person who believes they are worthless because their father told them that they would never amount to anything, this is a stronghold. It is a lie that was spoken, received, believed, and then reinforced over years of internal agreement until it became a fortress in the mind. That person does not need someone to yell at the demon. They need Romans 12 too, and do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. The word transformed in the Greek is the word metamorpho, a complete changing of form from the inside out. It is the same word used for Jesus' transfiguration. Catch that. Mind renewal is not a minor adjustment. It is metamorphosis. It is the dismantling of an old thought structure and the construction of new ones built on the word of God. But here is where it gets complex, and here is why this video, this session is so important. Sometimes a demon is reinforcing a stronghold. The stronghold is the fortress and the demon is the soldier guarding it. In that case, you need to do both. You need deliverance to cast out that devil and remove the demonic presence, and then you need mind renewal to tear down the thought pattern.

If you only cast out the demon but never tear down the stronghold, the thought pattern remains and it becomes an open door for the demon to return. If you only try to renew the mind but never address the demonic reinforcement, the person will feel like they are fighting a battle they cannot win because they are trying to think their way out of something that requires spiritual authority. So how do you discern which is which? Let me give you some practical markers. If the issue responds to the word of God and changes with consistent meditation and application of Scripture, it is likely a stronghold. Demons yield to truth over time. If the issue does not respond to the word, if the person can quote Scripture all day but still cannot break free, if there is an irrational compulsion that overrides their will, if they experience torment, which is intrusive thoughts, voices, nightmares, physical manifestations like pressure, choking, or sudden illness during worship, that is likely demonic. Demons do not yield to mind renewal. Demons yield to authority. If the person's behavior is tied, it's like a cycle that's tied to a specific trigger. For example, every relationship they have ends the same way. Every opportunity is sabotaged at the same point. That is often a pattern that is both demonic and a stronghold component. The stronghold creates the pattern. pattern of expectation and the demon enforces the outcome. Here is an analogy. Think of a walled city in the ancient world. The wall is the stronghold. It is a fortified structure. The soldiers inside the wall are the demons. If you tear down the wall but do not deal with the soldiers, they will rebuild. If you try to remove the soldiers without tearing down the wall, they will cover behind

it. You need both. Demolition of the structure and the eviction of the occupants. This is why a comprehensive approach to freedom includes both deliverance and discipleship, being freed from Egypt and getting Egypt out of you. Deliverance without discipleship is eviction without renovation. The person is temporarily free but has no structure to maintain their freedom. Discipleship without deliverance is education without liberation. The person has knowledge but no power to break free. And Jesus modeled this. He preached this. That was mind renewal, tearing down wrong thinking. He cast out devils. That was spiritual authority, removing demonic presences, and he never did one without the other and neither should we. So as ministers, as believers, as people who want to walk in freedom, learn to ask the right question. The question is not, is this a demon? The question is, what am I actually dealing with and what tool does this require? Again, what am I dealing with and what tool does this require? Stronghold breaking or deliverance. The word of God is a sword, it cuts, but it is also a lamp that reveals. So use it to discern, not just to attack.
