Sacrificial and Extravagant
In the final message in the God Will Provide series, Jimmy Seibert teaches on the joy and freedom of generosity. Jimmy reminds us that giving is first about seeking Jesus and His kingdom, and that God shows up when we let go. He describes three ways to give. We give joyfully, because God loves a cheerful giver and is able to make all grace abound to us. We give obediently and consistently, bringing the first fruits of the tithe to the local church and adding offerings for missions and the poor. We give sacrificially, like the widow who gave all she had and the Macedonian churches who gave beyond their ability because they had first given themselves to the Lord. Through stories of God multiplying small gifts, Jimmy calls the church to radical generosity again, trusting the Holy Spirit to mulitply.
So, yeah, we had a young person give their life to Jesus Christ, and they want to demonstrate that commitment to the world by being baptized. So, if you will, turn your attention to our video screens to see this baptism testimony. Hi, my name is Evert Sal's head, and I'm five years old and I'm about to turn six. Well, I was asking my dad, "I want to get baptized." He was like, "Okay," and I was like, "I want to do something real quick." So, I went to my bedroom, I prayed and do a song, and then I came out and I came away in Jesus. Well, I love that he's always protecting us. He will never let anything really happen. I like to pray for him, I like to do things for him, and I like to help my parents, so so, respect of God. Well, so, I love God and I want to show it. So, I want to be with him for the rest of my life. Good morning church family, man. I'm Omari Head, this is my wife Abby and our daughter, Evert, and we are so excited to baptize her this morning. All right, Evert, are you ready? That is not ready. All right, have you accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior? Yes. And do you promise to serve Him all the days of your life? Yes. I get to baptize you in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, you're ready? Buried with Him in baptism, and raised a walk in goodness of life. Jesus, we thank you for Evert's style, Lord. We thank you for that for, since the day she was born, she has had a heart for you, God, and thank you that she is a valiant warrior for good and a bridge builder to all. We pray that she would follow you all the days of her life in confidence and grace with passion and purpose.
In Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. That's a great way to launch and to worship. You guys can stand up. Welcome this morning. If you didn't notice, we have a little bit more space in the front. We took out some rows for ministry time, so I want to invite if you want to come forward and fill this space, we would love for you to be close. We're a family here this morning. I'm sure there's a couple more. If you're feeling particularly child like this morning, you can come forward at any point. And I was just thinking about this being a family space. And our family, my family, this is actually my brother. Our family, when we gather for meals or holidays, sometimes just when we're all together, we like to sing together. And there's just something about singing a song that unifies people and to the Lord. So we're going to sing to start out our service, one of our favorite songs, The Doxology. And I think you guys know this one pretty well, so please join with us. Please guide from whom our blessings are. Praise Him all, creatures, here we go. Praise Him above you, heavenly hosts. Hey, this is great family devotions for your family Etc, so Lord Jesus visit us as we unpack your word set us free Set us free it was for freedom that Christ died for us who might be free in all things And Lord, I pray in this area of provision would freedom reign this morning in Jesus name Well, I want to tell an old story that I'm often asked to Retell, but I guess because people don't believe me. So we're gonna do it again. I Mentioned when Laura and I first start off as a young couple God spoke to us to Sell everything to move into the inner city and again. I don't believe that is everybody's Call from God that was ours. So I'm describing things not prescribing things. You could have said man I'm called to go to Wall Street and to go for it there. That would be the same obedience is ours, okay? It's obedience that honors Jesus. All right, so this was our obedience to God and in the midst of it We also were committed to not communicating our needs to anyone just praying about our needs We've started a little missions training school. We're working part-time jobs, etc. Okay, so that's that's the field And on Saturday mornings, we would lead out Saturday morning evangelism. We go door-to-door We knock on doors and tell people about Jesus and that would stretch all of us by the way except my wife Laura loves door-to-door evangelism still still makes me a little anxious, but we would do it anyway and Walk up into this yard and this lady's in the front yard And she's kind of like holding her head and it could tell she's really troubled and I said ma'am You know, what's her name? She said my name's Sarah and I said what's going on? We love Jesus. We'd love to pray for you and she was like, oh my goodness. I can't believe it. I can't believe it
She said I just got home from the hospital. She said I was rushed to the ER I was ODing and then in the middle this drug overdose She said I I saw myself falling into a black hole and I was screaming I somehow I knew it was hell and I was screaming out God help God help in my face turn as I'm falling into the black hole and I could see a light and I could see a figure but I couldn't make it out somehow I knew it was God and I just said God help me and They said that I I came back They were losing me and all of a sudden I came back into my body. They were able to cleanse the drugs I don't know exactly how all this happened for her, but she said what was that light? I mean you you're working hard for evangelism. This is this is really helpful. So I Was able just to simply explain that was Jesus and This is the gospel. He's the way the truth in the life if you confess with him out Jesus is Lord you'll be saved and of course She said what do I need to do to be saved and she cried out to Jesus It was a beautiful moment and but remember in the Bible it often says not just individuals But you and your household shall be saved. So we said do you have family and she said my kids are are here my husband He's in and out of the house. My kids are here So we go into her little house and we sit down with the kids and we share the gospel in their own Innocent way they responded the best way they knew and we said we'd like to meet your husband and she said well You know again, he's in and out and and maybe come back later So we go we go home that day. We pray about it Rejoicing what God was doing and we thought okay, we need to re-initiate with him So we go back the next day and her husband answers the door and he's this big dude and he's now alcoholic and And you can tell he's drunk and he was like get the blank out of my house what in the world did you do to my family and and then we went back again anyway and And invited him to dinner and said hey would you come and just let us feed you? Well, the only problem was that remember we were living by daily bread and that particular day You know, we said hey, this is the day they're ready to come and We had literally enough for one person of noodles and a half a jar of spaghetti sauce And that was it and we had no money. We were committed to no debt
We didn't have credit cards. So here we are back against the wall and we're inviting over this family for the first time I'm in hopes this guy will be saved. to ask people for help at that time. So we said, okay, God, we're just gonna go for it and you're gonna have to multiply this spaghetti. And if you don't, we'll just explain to 'em, we love you that much, we gave you everything we had. And we're so sorry it wasn't enough. Just authenticity, be honest, right? We weren't like under the solution. We believed we had faith in our heart for a multiplication miracle, but if it wouldn't have happened, we would have been authentic. We would have loved them anyway and we would have shared what we had. So they come over and the weird thing about, back in those days when you get married, we sold everything except our China and crystal, which they would give families. We just felt that people had sacrificed to give it to us. We needed to at least keep that to honor her family. And so we laid out China and crystal in our little $185 a month house fully furnished and it was worth about $200 a month. So here they are, they come in and Laura's saying what do we do? And we pray about it and we'd say look, just put it in, put the sauce in the pot, put boil the noodles and then let's just close your eyes and just scoop it in and let's trust God.
So we did the niceties and et cetera. And then said, hey, we're just gonna take your plates and the little kitchen here, we'll just bring back the food, the spaghetti and we go in and Laura fills the first plate, noodles and sauce. I take the first place back, gets one of the little kids. I come back and she's standing there and she's just noodles and sauce, noodles and sauce for all of them, two little kids, mom, a dad and for Laura and I and what we begin with was still in the pot for extras. Is that amazing? Isn't that awesome? Well, the good part is even the next thing that happened and as we shared the gospel again with the family or with the husband, he said, I'm ready, I'm ready and I still remember laying hands on praying for him as he called out to Jesus and he was just sweating 'cause he had come really drunk and he was just sweating and he was shaking and trembling, huge guy and just breaking down, the bondage is breaking off of his life. It was a beautiful moment. We would continue a relationship with these guys and then the next thing of course was to ask them to church and Sarah confided in Laura, I don't feel comfortable because back in those days people would dress up for church, obviously we're over that, but back in the day, you used to wear a dress or a tie or something like that
and so she felt uncomfortable going to church and she said, Laura felt led to say, well, what would make you feel nice to me? Oh, I love yellow, a yellow dress and it was Easter was coming up and we had, I went back and found the facts for I've shared this in different ways. I've found the exact details from Laura now. We had $20 had come in between that meal and this time and Laura said, God, we only have $20, would you? What do we do? And she felt like go to the nicest department store in town at that time it was dillards and so with the dillards and she just went to this rack and it said 75% off and there was a size 10, the perfect dress she'd asked for a yellow dress for $17. And so we got her yellow dress, she came to Easter, was involved with us until they moved away and the beauty of God, right? So those things happened because when we started to align our lives financially, there were a couple of key scriptures. One was this, Matthew 633, seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be added to you. This is about Jesus, this is about loving him and honoring him with our lives first and foremost. It's not even about money, what a byproduct but it's literally about the exaltation of Jesus trusting him with our needs so that he might be glorified.
And then Matthew 6, 19 through 21, do not store up for yourselves treasures in heaven where moth and rust destroy, where thieves break in and steal but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven where neither moth, we said again, don't we say it break in steel, let's go. Go to the next one, next verse. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. So I was trying to do memory and look at the screens at the same time, all right, here we go. Where your treasure is, there your heart is also. And we just said, look, every time we sow into eternity, into an eternal purpose, into somebody's life, there is a cruel of grace, not just in this life story of this family was it was eternal life was shifted. They saw the miracle of God as we were able to share them the feeding of the 5,000 with them. And it would set the course of their lives, not just for a temporal moment, but for a lifetime. And then it would secure Laura and I to trust in Jesus for everything in our lives. Now this morning, I'm going to unpack some key principles around giving. But I want to say ahead of time, guys, it is time to wake up again. This church was founded on generosity, radical generosity. All over this room, many of you in this room, you've given cars and houses and radicated debt and been so generous in so many ways. But just as I share stories from the past, I want to be living it in the present. And what happens is when generosity breaks out, everything breaks out. When you let go of your resources in a holy and honest way with integrity in your heart, not trying to control everything, being faithful, obviously to work hard, to be diligent, everything we talked about. But when you let things go, man, it creates a wind of grace and a revival opportunity to begin. All right. So how do we give? We give joyfully, we give obediently and consistently, and we give sacrificially. So pull my chair up here if we're going to do a little teaching, all
right? You ready? Are we good? We're teaching and training. Second Corinthians 9, 6-8. Now this I say, he who's so sparingly, he who's so bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he is purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion for God loves a cheerful giver. Do I have to give a choice of making me give a choice, job, job, job, job, job. We're not doing that. Not glad that God loves a cheerful giver. God is able to make all grace, everybody say all grace, abound to you so that always having all sufficiency and everything, you may have an abundance for every good work, for every good work. So let's just break this down. If you're not sowing anything in to people's lives, you can't expect for anything to come back to you. I remember my mom used to say this who was one of these folks, bless her heart. She got saved two weeks, two months before she passed away, but she lived like this all her life, very bitter person. And she would call us the luckiest people in the world. You got to just so lucky. You're just so lucky. You know, people gave you a car when you needed it, something happened here, something happened there. And I would always say, man, we are blessed by God. You are absolutely right. But we walk with God. And because we're a part of giving, we're also a part of receiving. We're not giving because we want to get something back. We're not giving because we believe in the God of generosity. And I would have to do a little preach every time for her, but she still thought we were just lucky. So I just want you know, if you want to increase your luck, then so into somebody else's luck. All right? So it's very, very fairly. Each one must do just see his purpose in his heart. So nobody's making you give. One of the most beautiful things that God created us with is a free will. And that is so that we can take that free will and say, not my will, but your will. We can give our worship out of love and desire, not out of half to. Yes, every knee will bow, every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. If you do not choose Christ in this life, there is eternal damnation. There is separation from God forever. So that's the one that you must turn an owl to Jesus. And all the other decisions in life God has given you a will to be able to exercise by faith. For God loves a cheerful giver and he's able to make everything abound to you. So more than just maybe talking about it, let me just kind of demonstrate what does this look like? What is joyful giving look like? So Laura, could you, Jessica, could you come here a second? Jessica, Grindel? Okay. So, hi, Jessica. No,
you love being in front of everybody. All right. Love, Jessa. All right. If you know Jessa, you already love her. Right? So, Jessa has worked with us for 12 years, worked on a modest salary. That's our staff salary. And been faithful, life group leading, caring for people, loving people, volunteering beyond her staff position, a servant to all of us. And glue in a lot of ways for more than you guys know. Well, Over the last few years and she was desiring to buy a house, and I remember, you know, when all the real estate was up into the right, the poor gal got cut out of every house. She would put in a bid, and somebody would overbid her. She couldn't get a house within the means that she had. So, in the middle of that disappointment, many tears, many prayers. We all said, "Come on, girl, we're with you. We love you," and wasn't able to do that. Same time, basic provisions or need for a car. And so, Jessa said, "Well, I guess I just give up the hope of saving for a house because I've got to get a car." Well, she got a car, and maybe because not knowing much about cars, it ended up being a lemon and a very difficult thing. In the midst of that car breaking down regularly, I had a couple of medical things that she needed to attend to that were unexpected over the last few months as well. And then, she said, "Well, whatever I've got left that I'm saving, I'm just going to get up and go to a car lot and buy a car again." And she gets in her car to start a few days ago, and it wouldn't start. So, even the lemon wouldn't start to go get another car.
And so, we heard this story of it said, "That's not okay. Everybody not okay with that? That's not okay." And again, I just want to say, anybody else has a need out there saying, "I hope it's me. I hope it's me." Listen, I promise you that there's going to be generosity and flowing in this place, but if you'll rejoice now, then God will be able to take care of you. You got it? Okay. So, Jessa, what I've got to -- I just got a little bit to get started. So, from Lauren, I, and a friend, so here's $1,200. So, there is -- that's -- (applause) But anybody know that's not enough for a car. Can we -- can you help me? That's not enough. A scooter -- not even a scooter. So, these days. So, I've given $1,200 kind of as a seed money, all right? Now, what I need you guys to do at the end of the service, if God prompts you, I need you guys to come and give directly to her. You can trust this woman. This is highest integrity, absolutely. And all that money will go directly to getting her a car. But here's the big deal. She said, "But what if I buy another lemon?" So, we have gotten a faithful elder in our midst
that is going to walk with you and help you buy the car. So that it is a good one, and just the little bit that I've talked to people, people have already -- you know, it's percolating already. But, guys, let's get to the best car that we can. We -- we good with that. Let's not leave anything untied. (applause) And the biggest thing I want you to know, which is I know you're a harsh car. You're -- you're seen. You're known. You're loved. You're valuable. We can't be who we are as a people without you. And when you're not taken care of, it's not okay for us. And we're with you. So, could you guys extend a hand right now? I want to pray over Jessa. Lord, take this -- first fruits, this $1,200. Turn it into $12,000, or $25,000, or whatever is needed, Lord. And Lord, we thank you that Jessa is precious in your sight, that you brought her here and established her in this house to heal and restore her physically, mentally, emotionally, relationally, and even financially. And Lord, we pray today would be a turning point. Today would be a day of breakthrough. Today would be a day of freedom in every way. And Lord, I thank you when she walks through the fire, she won't be burnt. When she goes through the waters, she won't be overwhelmed.
For you are her God, and you will uphold her with your strong right hand. Amen. [ Applause ] All right, did that make anybody happy? All right? So, joy, joy happens when you do things like that, right? And I just want to encourage everybody in this room, if you have found yourself in a really prosperous place, and there is strategies for giving and all the strategic ways that you use your resources, but never underestimate what $100 does for somebody, never underestimate what a personal touch does at a right moment, because it just allows you to touch the kingdom when you touch people's lives. So, Jessa is going to stay right there, you don't move at the end of the service, and we'll make sure that it goes above and beyond. So, what is the response to joyful givers? Again, I want to hit that. God is able to make all grace abound to you. So, when you joyfully give, it just goes on and on and on. And I've done this in-- I remember a few years ago on a daylight today, Lauren and I literally had $60 to our name. Bill's paid, we had $60. And we had three services at the time in the old building and I was thinking, "Okay, I'm gonna give 20 each service." And I get into the first service, I'm just saying, "God, who are you highlighting?" And one of our single gals got highlighted
and I asked her to come to the stage and I go on my, but I put my hand in my pocket and I think I'm 20 bucks and I get back then, probably 10 years ago, it used to be a lot of money and so, or a little bit of money. And I thought, "How can I just give her $20?" Look at this poor girl. So I gave her all 60 and thought, "Well, okay, "one time wonder here, this is of one service deal." And so I gave her the $60 and she had been asked to be in a wedding and the dress was $60, she didn't have the money. So here we are, the exact amount, she's crying on stage, we're praying over everything else. And then I'm like, "Glory to God." And then we do some different things at the end of the service. We're praying over people giving money, somebody comes up and gives me 60 more dollars. Just saying, "I don't know what to do with it, "just take this money," but it was 60 and then somebody would add another 50 to it. And you guys heard Laura Summersett's testimony last week. She was sitting on the front row right there, I called her out second service, I gave that money. She said it was 60, it was 110, by the way, just once you know if there's a discrepancy. And because I remember saying, "Lord, take this 110, let it be a deposit for 11,000." She was wanting to start a cake business.
She got 11,000 plus that morning. That would eventually allow her to open her storefront, to start her cake business and provide for her family, et cetera. Then the third service, somebody gave me more money, I had 130 dollars now. I'm gaining money as the time goes on with nothing in my hand. And I have 130 dollars, someone got highlighted, somebody then they were gone from the auditorium, and they were laying down in the back, the third service, the mezzanine was closed, and they were laying down the back, and I called their name out 'cause I couldn't see 'em, I thought, "Man, that's a step of faith." They walked out of the building, and they popped their head up from the mezzanine, come walking down the aisle, crying the whole time. And they said, "I was about to leave "because I just feel so uncared for, unloved." I'm just in a depression, I don't know what to do, and the Holy Spirit said for me to wait. So she laid down in the back and just came up, was able to give her that money, and the whole congregation prayed for her, cared for her abundance. And the joy of the Lord just broke out in every direction. And I say these different stories to tell you guys, take your five loaves and two fish, so it's somewhere. Let the Spirit of God multiply.
Well, it's all I have, well, there's a lot of scriptures about that. Give what you have as the Holy Spirit prompts you with joy and with trust that it will be enough. All right, second part. We give obediently and we give consistently. Okay, how many people believe in Jeremiah 29, 11, through 13? Let's look at this and you tell 'em if you believe it. All right, well, our hands are already going up. For I know the plans I have for you to clear, it's a Lord, plans for welfare and not for clammy, to give you a future and a hope. Then you'll call upon me and come and pray to me. I'll listen to you. You'll seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart. The next little scripture is I will be found by you. How many believe that? Do you believe that? God has good plans for you, right? This is the base of all theology. But there is a response. We partner with God. We have to humbly call out to him and he moves in our life. Salvation is already provided for in Jesus, but you have to humble yourself. You'll believe that Jesus is Lord. God, raise him from the dead and you will be saved. How many people believe in second Chronicles 7, 14? Sometimes you may be a few less 'cause you say,
"Man, I've tried to pray and our nation needs more, but I'm telling you this is still the hope." And my people who are called by my name, if they humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I'll hear from heaven will forgive their sin and heal their land. What that is often used in praying for a nation, but I can tell you can pray for your personal life, you can pray for your family, you'll pray for someone else. If I will humble myself, if I will turn from my wicked ways, guys, I promise you, it's called repentance. If I will turn and repent, then God will return and heal and restore and save. So we believe these promises and they, even though they're in the Old Testament, what about if you fear the Lord? Righteousness will extend it to your children's children on and on and on. We use promises from the Old Testament for New Testament realities. So let me give you another one. Malachi three, starting in verse seven. This is about returning to the Lord, a repentance that's needed. From the days of your fathers, you've turned aside from my statues and not kept them. So they're saying, "Okay God, you're telling us for a mess and up, we need to repent. What does that mean?" And he chooses this particular expression, but he says, "How shall we return?
Will a man rob God yet you are robbing me?" But you say, "How are we robbing you?" And ties and offerings, you're cursed with a curse for you robbing me, the whole nation of you. Tying the whole tithe into the storehouse, so there may be food in my house, and test me now on this, says the Lord of Host, "If I will not open for you the windows of heaven, and pour out for you of blessing until it overflows, and then this is the promise, right? Here's the promise. If you will give ties and offerings, not over the windows of heaven, then I'll rebuke the devour for you." That's my favorite one. Like, I do not need the devil on my back, right? And here's one way. He'll rebuke the devour so that it will not destroy the fruit of the ground. What I do have will prosper instead of rot in my hands. Nor will your vine in the field cast its grapes, says the Lord of Hosts. All the nations will call you blessed, for you shall be a delightful land, says the Lord of Hosts. Okay. We talked about this before, but I just want to kind of reiterate it again. This 10%, the storehouse, was the temple of God. So they all understood in order for the priest to do their work before God, or for the temple to be ready for the teaching and training of the saints, in order for it to be that beacon of light in the midst of a broken world, there had to be the first fruits were given into the storehouse. On top of that, they gave offerings. And those offerings were for festivals, it was for orphans, it was for widows, it was for the mission of God. So ties and offerings were how they were running, if you will, the expression of the glory of God in the earth at that time, which was supposed to be the people of Israel.
And the bottom line is, if you guys know, Israel knew what to do, but wouldn't do it. And then they would have to repent and return. And when they would, then God would bless them. This would set up the first words of Jesus and John the Baptist, repent for the kingdom of God, is at hand. And that would eventually bring in the people of God, who is us, the church. And this same process would go into play. So let me just say it this way. When we raised our kids, we trained our kids three simple things, tithe, they had little ziplock baggies, they'd put, for their allowance, they would put 10% and that would go to the church and they would give it in the offering. Once you want to teach your kids how to tithe to the church, because it's a part of what God has given us to express His glory. So they do 10% tithe. They have another little envelope, little ziplock, and it would be 10% to missionaries. So they could pray about where they wanted to sow, what country, where we were working, and they would give to missionaries. There was another envelope giving to the poor, and that would be 10% to the poor. So as we see people in need along the way, whether we know them or we don't, they're able to give to the poor. So we disciplined our children, though it was very little amounts of money. Remember I told you we gave them a nickel, a chore, so this wasn't a big cash haul for the church or for the poor, but it was a disciplined process to teach them that the first fruits are the Lord's for the glory of God through the church, and then we give to the mission of God around the world, and then we care for the poor as the Scripture has monitored us from Genesis to Revelation. So you want to create a disciplined process that eventually leads to liberty. Now you say it another way. The Scripture says in Galatians 3, 24, the law is the tutor that leads us to grace. So we have these guardrails, these training wheels of tithing and giving and offering that
then lead us to grace because in the New Testament it says there weren't any needy among them, they would take the money, throw it at the apostles' feet, and distribute it to anyone that might have need. Jesus said to sell everything and give to the poor. So you want to be able to have the liberty to give everything, but these guardrails are how God keeps the kingdom going along the way, okay? Let me say it another way. The tithe is 10% of your income. I hear this deal these days, and I just want to, can I just be dad for a little bit, just be honest with you guys? He says, "Yeah man, I gave my tithe, $100 of $10,000 is not a tithe." That's 1%, by the way, or maybe is that right, or 01, 1%. So the bottom line is you guys, a tithe is 10%, and this is the deal. The principle is the first fruit. So let me give you a couple other scriptures. the tree is the Lord's, it is holy to the Lord." Proverbs 3, "Honor the Lord from your wealth and from the first of all your produce so your barns will be filled with plenty and your vats will overflow with new wine." You got it? So the first fruits go to the Lord. And it says, "You robbed me of tithes and offerings, you're cursed with a curse." So the way that Lord and I say it, you don't have to agree with this, I'm just describing our conviction is I don't want to curse money in my house. I don't want anything, I want the blessing of God. So the tithe goes in the reason we give it to the local church. And as I've told you, if you say, "Oh, it's a pasture trying to get some money," listen, I'm telling you, give to another local church, test God, give three months, give six months, give to another local church and test me, the Bible says, and see if God won't bless you. The first fruits go to the Lord so that the 90% is blessed of the Lord. And then you have that liberty to give offerings on top of it out of the goodness of your heart
and your joy for the mission of God and your joy to give to the poor. But when you dice up the 10% and say, "Well, that first timber, that's all mine and I'm just going to give a little bit over here, a little bit over here," I guarantee you what happens is the more money you make, the less percentage you give. This is, they've done data studies and stats on this. So don't impress us because you're giving higher dollar figures, but you're giving less of a percentage because somehow you think you're now in control of your money. You've never been in control. It's God who gives you the liberty to make wealth. And you can, that's right, in this life. You can try to be in control, but I promise you, it will not be blessed in the long run. What if you get away with it in the short run? We give to the local church the 10% because it's God's plan A for the glory of God in the earth. We believe in the church, not just Antioch, we believe in every local church that names the name of Jesus, that honors God by the authority of the word of God, that believes in the mission of God for the glory of God. And we encourage every believer to tie to a local church so that you are tied to a local church. You are not just a freewheeling independent. I'm a part of the big sea, everybody, I just float around. That is so unholy. It's so unhealthy for your family, for you, but that, but every church that we've been in is imperfect. Wow. That's because you were there. That's not just everybody else's problem. And if you don't see it that way, you end up pointing fingers and speaking about everything other than the work of God. This is the beauty of God that we, you know around here, we talked about the beauty of
the church. I'm not advocating just for Antioch, I'm advocating for the local church worldwide so that the lights can be on, so that we can do the ministries that we do, so that we can have what we have. And we can celebrate this and this whole facility, this whole deal is debt-free. People rejoice for years, some of you don't even know it, I'm forgot. When we did this debt-free, this city rejoiced, it put faith in people's hearts all over the world, you guys. This church matters to God, this church has integrity and we give to the local church to train our children to be attached to the church for the glory of God. So many things I could say about that, but let me just try to explain it another way. So for us, for me and my household, 10% goes to the local church no matter how much we make, little to a lot. The next thing is this offerings thing, so let me just give you an illustration. So this past week I had $6,000 come in unexpected from speaking deal that they way over pay before. Just by the way, when I go to speak places, I don't charge. They say, "What's the honor of him?" Whatever God leads you to do, just, you know, if you could take care of my expenses to get there and back, I'm good. Sometimes people are faithful to that, some people do above and beyond. This was an above and beyond moment, so unexpected $6,000 comes in. So what do we do? This is normal life for us. $600 goes to tithe. $600 we've set aside for different missionaries to bless people and needs that we know of. And then $600 for people in need. And because I knew what we were going to do this Sunday, I said, "Well, hey honey, let's just set aside that $600 and give it out in the services." So yesterday, Lauren and I were talking, and I had $600 to give out in the services, $300 each service, right? And we said, "You know what?
Why not double the blessing? Why would we have a little extra right now? Let's do $600 instead of $300." So then I came in, "Well, I'm going to do $600 each service," which is $1,200. And then a friend last night said, "What are you talking on tomorrow? I told them I was talking on this particular part." They said, "Well, let me sew into that as well." So they gave double that. We started with 300 service or 600. Does that make sense? So if you're doing the math right, between tithing, offering, and needs, that left me with $3,400, right? And is that right? Did I get the math right? I did, yeah, yeah. No, 3,600. Three times 18? Yeah, is that right? Is that right? Yeah, 3,600. Is that right? 632. I was right the first time. All right, I should have written my notes. All right, so $3,200. So here's the deal. That $3,200 is about to be lit up. I may be a millionaire tomorrow. Who knows what God can do with $3,200 in his hands instead of--
I can stick $1,000. We have Christmas need for kids. We have all the stuff going on. We do. They're legit. I could have spent it all yesterday until I ended up even. So I have all these needs. But until we said, who cares? It's the Lord's. We're not trying to prove anything. I'm not trying to get anything in return. We're just open our hands and open our hearts and shares. All yours, you created it. So what? That $3,200 is going to be so lit up, it's going to be awesome. And that $1,200 that we just planted in the justice life is going to turn into $12,000 or $25,000 or whatever. We're believing for a new car. All right, I'm just going all the way. All right. So last thing, man, and obviously you can tell, we're just out of the gate. We're just barely touching it. So we can give faithfully and consistently and obediently ties and offerings. And then we give sacrificially. See, all that other stuff, you think, well, that would be a big sacrifice to give a tithe. No, no, no, you can go deeper. All right, here we go, Luke 21, 1 through 4.
And he looked up and he saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury. And he saw poor widow putting in two small copper coins. And he said, truly, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all of them, for they out of their surplus put into the offering, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had to live on. You ever done that? We've done that. Not recently. Uh-oh, who knows? Could be today, which would be great. I would rejoice if that was what God loves her today. But here's the point. When you give sacrificially, you enter in with Jesus at levels that you won't any other way. And usually the poor get this more than the rich. Many guys know I'll call her Danson Donna. She's on a walker now, but she's still dancing. She's at the front. And Donna, years ago, we did a service like today. And we asked people to come to the front who had need. And somebody came and gave Donna $25. And she needed a bus ticket and needed a meal for next week. And she was trying to work a part-time job. And so Donna comes to me at the end of the-- I guess she was in the first service. And she said, hey, Jimmy, I wanted to give you this $5. And I said, well, why Donna?
What happened? She said, well, somebody gave me $25. And I only needed 20. Could you give it to somebody who needs $5 next service? Most beautiful thing in the world. I've never forgotten it. This widow's mite is such a beautiful thing. When we started this building, I remember a family who came and said, from the neighborhood here, they gave literally in change bags $1,123.53. And they said, in tears, they're weeping how their lives have been changed through this church. We had this when we did the groundbreaking. Excuse me. The people got stakes. They wrote scriptures on it and pounded it in the ground. This family came and they said, God's changed our lives so much. We wish we could have done more. We've done everything we can. I'm so sorry it's not more. And they wept, wanting to do more. And I thought, that is so beautiful, it's ridiculous. It's just stuck in my mind. It's been a marker. They took the bar up in their need. Here's what it says in Set Corinthians 8, a group just like this family from the neighborhood. Now, brethren, we wish to make known to you the grace of God, which has been given in the churches of Macedonia, that in great ordeal of affliction,
their abundance of joy and their deep poverty overflowed in the wealth of their liberality. For I had testified that according to their ability and beyond their ability, they gave of their own accord, begging us with much urging for the favor of participation to the Lord and then to us by the will of God. Isn't that amazing? These poverty-stricken people were saying we want to give in the midst of our need. We want to give liberally to this need of the saints throughout the world, and we're asking for a way to do that, and then they said, well, they weren't like everybody else, because they had given themselves first to the love of God, and then to one another by the grace of God. This is ultimately what it's all about. We started off Matthew 6, right? Seek first the kingdom, and his righteousness first, seek first the king and his kingdom, and all these things will be added to you. I want to end with one last story, and then we're going to do something cool. So a few years ago, we were breaking into the Middle East, and what I mean by that is in a good way, church planting. We had several couples that were sacrificially living in the middle of the West Bank and war and difficulty, and they needed to start a computer training center for poverty-stricken Muslims who needed hope. And out of that computer center, they would end up building relationships during the gospel, and God would eventually use that to cause one of the largest movements among Muslims in world history. They saw thousands of Muslims come to Jesus, thousands from Antioch, from Waco, from this little spot, Baylor students who got on fire for God. But in the middle of that, they were just struggling, just financially, to make it day to day. And there was a lady in our midst who, her kids were just now getting into college and
getting on their way, and she had been single from a very difficult divorce years earlier, and she had a solid job and was able to help her kids get through, and she just started saving for retirement. She had $27,000 in retirement fund, her name was Jeanette, and she came to me in a service like today and said, "Man, I heard about the Muslims that don't know Jesus, and I've just been broken. I've been weeping. I've been saying, "God, what can I give? I don't know what to give, and I still got to take care of my girls in this transition time or my family, help other things." She said, "I don't know what to do, I don't know what to do." And she said, "But I was thinking, I do have this $27,000." And so she said, "I want to give all of it. Will you give it to the guys to put in that computer training center, and I'm just going to ask God, would you take my little that's not enough, and would you multiply it so that people would be saved, lives would be changed, and they would have enough?" She gave it all. That gift would allow them to begin the process of running that computer learning center, which would turn into thousands of Muslims coming to Jesus, and then later on, about three or four years later, she would send herself to the Middle East. We would send her out, by the way, but she would literally give her life. She sent her money and her heart and her prayers, and then God sent her, and she was able to serve, and then eventually came back, met a great man of God and was able to experience the fruit of what she had sown. Remember, it's all for the glory of God, you guys. It's for the glory of the nations, it's for glory of people, it's for raising a generation of people that are not selfish, mom and dad, it's for modeling, and you know, I just want to just one of their little things, say, "But what if I give it to the wrong thing? What if they used the money wrongly? God will reward you by giving in faith, and He will deal with them wherever they need
to be dealt with." Then say, "Well, I'm disappointed because I gave money to somebody who used the wrong." Listen, sin is still abounding in the hearts of men, but what I can say that you are blessed, and they are blessed, and they will see the goodness of God, and if they choose to rebel against the goodness of God, God will make sure to remind them of your grace and your mercy. All right. Anybody ever stand? Please. And I'm going to need your help this morning, so here's what I need. All right. Does everybody believe that humility is good? Does everything to be humble is good? Okay. What I know that there are hundreds of needs financially in this room, okay? So here's what I need you to do. If you have a financial need, you or your spouse or your friend, if you have a financial need and you came in, we had several words about people saying, "I don't know what to do. I'm doing everything. I'm working, building." Just like Jessa. She works diligently. and God blessed her uniquely today. So if you say, "I have a need," we wanna pray for you. We wanna ask that God would take your willingness to stand over the body and say, "I have need," and let us pray God's grace over you. Could you just start coming down right now? Step out, come on, somebody, everybody,
yes, ma'am, come on, come on, guys. If you don't humble yourself, and it doesn't matter, you could say, "Well, I'm a business downtown. I've got, if people think I have a lot of money, but I'm about to go bankrupt. I know that's happening. We're starting a new business. We're trying to get something off the ground, it's not working. I'm putting a dream before God, it's not happening like Cody over here, right? There's so many different things. Come on, hey, students, if you have student loans that are overwhelming you and tripping you out, start coming down. Come down, let's get some prayer. Come on, let's get some breakthrough for student loans. People in the middle, come on, come on, everybody. Don't let any, who cares? This is the family of God. If you read the New Testament, the goal was there wasn't any needy among us, but if we don't know that there's a need, we can't respond to that need. So come on, everybody. Now, here's what I'm asking from the rest of us. If you're a born-again believer, even if you're not, you could still give. And God will bless you. This is a crazy thing about the kingdom of God,
everything works, even, even by grace. So what I wanna say to everybody here, I need everybody being prayed for by somebody. I don't know what God's gonna do this morning, but you're gonna get somebody to lay hands on you and ask the spirit of God to touch you. And I'm asking you, everybody else, as you look down on this audience especially, if you know somebody or don't know somebody, would you come and pray over people? That's right, it's church. We're all doing something. I need all y'all, come on now. You don't come to Antioch 'cause you just want a little tickling of the ears. You come here 'cause you know we're serious. So I'm asking you to participate. So what that means is come and pray everybody. And if God gives you freedom, there's no expectation. I wanna say to everybody, stand in here. But if God gives you freedom, ask 'em what's your been mo? Put cash in their hand. Say, how can I help you pray for them? Just whatever God prompts you to do, but let's let the generosity of God come. Look at the needs, you guys. The needs are greater than the prosperity. We need to see this and go love people. All right, it's gonna get crowded to pull this off. So here's the deal.
Hey, we can start that back row, that back bottom, but here's what we're gonna do. Prayer people, you can come up on this stage. This is one of those ones, as long as you don't touch their instruments, they're fine. All right, so, but come up on the front and pray over people, but let's everybody get some of your pray for 'em. We good? And if you're standing here, come on, just start moving everybody, come pray for people. Let's go. Now, if you're standing here awkwardly and saying, nobody's praying for me, I think I should just leave. Don't leave, God's praying for you, that Jesus is sitting at the right hand of the Father and are seating for you. So if nobody gets to you, God's gonna get to you, but we're gonna make sure somebody gets to you. All right? And if you have the ability or resources, and you wanna just give 'em $5 or whatever it is, and again, if you don't have cash, I wanna Venmo you. I wanna, what's your email? Do something, but everybody do something, at least sowing in prayer right now. They're gonna sing and we're gonna worship, but everybody's doing something. All right, we got about 15, 20 minutes here.
Let's go for it. Let's pray over all our friends. All our leaders, you guys know what to do. Come on, dive in. Raise your hand if you don't have anybody praying for you yet. If you do not have someone praying for you, be bold, raise your hand. Could somebody dive in the middle of the pile? I need somebody with a little grit to jump in. Jacob, can you pray for Zach? This guy right here, keep your hands raised, guys. Keep these two right here. Come up on this stage, if you can't get to somebody, come on, jump, jump in the front, and work your way towards them. It's wonderful chaos, it's okay, I'm sure you would have done it better, but this is what we got to work with. So come on, do something, pray for somebody, contend for somebody. You can step on the chairs they're paid for, whatever you need to do. We put it, there's a info deal, we have a benevolence fund, and here's what will happen If you give in to say whatever the needs came up on Sunday morning, we will get feedback on what the needs were We'll let you know, we'll share that testimony online, publicly, etc, but everything that comes in today will go to needs in the body for today Does that make sense? So I love us just giving without having to go through the institution But this also is a way for you to do what you want to do, which is caring for people, but you don't know anyone This is an opportunity, every penny of this will go directly to people's personal needs, rent, electrical bills, etc We'll distribute this Sunday to the needs that we were aware of And just way to go guys, so proud of everyone But one last thing, if you're here in the sound of my voice, I want to give you a chance to respond to Jesus She may be overwhelmed right now with the grace of God And what happens every time we do this, people get saved I remember a single mom, last time we did this, she needed $160 for food and diapers, she got more than that And they asked her inadvertently at the end, "Do you know Jesus?" She said, "No, I just came with a friend," and they said but she got eternal salvation and an introduction into the body of Christ. So if you're here this morning, you don't know Jesus. Could you just pray with me? Everybody who's praying, keep it going. Everybody who's given, keep it going. If you need Jesus, pray this. Lord Jesus, I need you. Forgive me, just pray it with me.
