Overflowing and Unshakable

We're going to be reading out of Romans 8 verse 9 through 11 which said, "You however are not in the realm of the flesh, but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. But if Christ isn't you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you." Can we pray? Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you this morning. We thank you for this gift, the Holy Spirit. We thank you that your word says that the same Spirit, the same power that rose Jesus up from the grave lives on the inside of us. So those of us who are going through a situation this morning that feels too heavy, it feels like a grave, that grave of depression, that grave of anxiety. Lord Father, we hand it over to you this morning, Lord Father, because we believe, Lord Father, the same power that rose you up from the grave can also raise us up from that place. We honor you this morning. We praise you. We glorify you. It's in the match of sin with Jesus that we pray. Amen. We believe that the same God who did all those miracles way back then is available now. Come on, trust us in this together. I'm calling on the God of Jacob, whose love endures to generations. I know that you will keep your covenants. I'm calling on the God of Moses. The Word opened up the ocean. I need you now to do the same thing for me. Do it now for me, O God. Oh God, my God, I need you. Oh God, my God, I need you now. How I need you now. O Rock, O Rock of Ages, I'm standing on your faithfulness. On your faithfulness. You may have noticed we're taking our time, making some more time for worship, and for prayer. The reality is everything in our life feels rushed, especially in South Florida. We've rushed from one thing to another, one place to another place. And Church, if we're not careful, we can rush through the presence of God. We can rush through this and feel like this is just something that's familiar to us and not the actual place where we get to experience the fullness of who he is together. So we're going to continue to make some room in worship, and giving is part of our worship. Set Corinthians 9-7 tells us that every one of us, in our own heart, we need to decide. Not someone else telling us, but in our own heart, decide how we're going to worship God with our giving. So it's not reluctantly or under compulsion. Why? Because God loves a cheerful giver. We take time to respond in worship through our giving because God is good, and without him, we would have nothing. And so if giving is part of your worship today, there are several ways that you could participate. Our service guides, they pass down buckets every single week. There's some boxes in the back, a giving kiosk out in the lobby. Many of you, you automate what's important to you, you give online already. The method isn't important. What's important is the heart. See, we're unapologetic about worshiping God with our giving, because we believe giving changes things. We believe that giving, it grows our faith, it helps us to continue to trust that God is our provider. We believe that giving, it guards our heart and our mind. It helps us to not let money be our master. And we also give generously because giving gives people an opportunity. Other people an opportunity to experience the presence of God. And so we're going to continue doing what we'll be doing all throughout this overflow series.

We're going to take our time and we're going to make room. So right now, let's prepare ourselves as we continue to worship through opening up his word and hearing what his spirit wants to speak to us so we can be the people he's called us to be. Holy Spirit, you are welcome here. We know that you're already here. We just want to let you know that you are welcome to do whatever it is you want to do. That you would stretch us, that you would grow us, that you would convict us, that you would lead us so we can be the sons and daughters that you so love. Help us in this place to hear from you today. Let our ears be open. Let our hearts be ready to receive. And we ask that your will would be done. It's not by power, it's not by might, it's not by who's preaching, it's by your spirit and your spirit alone that we can do all things. So we surrender all. In Jesus' name we thank you. And all God's people said, amen. You may have a seat. Hey, I want to welcome you once again to the perfect place for imperfect people to experience the presence of God. And I have the privilege of teaching today. I want to start off by saying that there are things in our life that we don't know are secure until they're shaken. I want you to think of how many times you've driven over a bridge and never considered can this hold the weight of my car. You don't think of that, do you? How long have you lived in your home and not once questioned the foundation on which it was built? Probably never, right? But here's something that's familiar with us in South Florida. It's hurricane season. You can drive by a tree a thousand times. And because it is big, you think it's strong, but the only way we find out if it's strong enough is when it's shaken. When a hurricane comes and the wind blows, then we can determine whether or not its foundation was deep and strong. And I share this because that happens to us a lot in our own lives. Like we don't know how strong our faith actually is until our faith is shaken. It's easy to say God's my provider when you have everything you need and the money's coming in, right?

It's easy to say, Lord, I trust you and I trust your plan when God's plan looks a whole lot like your plan. (gentle music) When everything around you is going well, what happens when life starts shaking? What happens when a person you love walks out on you or the thing you prayed for doesn't get answered? What happens when you've lived your life to the best of your ability and life isn't the way that you'd hoped it would be? That's when we find the difference between an unshakeable life and what the Word of God says is an unshakeable kingdom. I want to talk about that today. I want you to turn your Bible to Hebrews chapter 12, verse 28 is going to be our key passage. And as we read this, for some of you, this is for your right now. For some of you, you've got to remember this. You've got to store this in your hearts for when difficulty does arise. Hebrews 12, 28. It says, "Therefore, let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken. And thus, let us offer to God acceptable worship with reverence and awe." This is the Word of God. Now I want you to notice from what we just read what God doesn't promise. He doesn't promise that we'll live a life that's unshakeable, right? No, in fact, nowhere in Scripture have I found that God promises that we will live a life that is not shaken up by anything. In fact, Jesus says the opposite. The Word of God says that we will experience an inheritance of a kingdom that cannot be shaken. There's a difference there. The writer of Hebrews, he's speaking to a bunch of believers who are going through significant challenges in their faith. The culture they're living in is constantly changing and moving away from the things of God and onto the things of the world.

And a lot of them, they're tempted to go back to what was familiar to them before they started walking in faith with Jesus. And so the writer keeps on reminding them, "Don't build your confidence on things that are constantly changing around you." He says, "You've been given a kingdom that cannot be shaken. The kingdom that you are part of follower of Christ is not dependent on the economy. It's not dependent on what type of week you're having or your emotions or your relationships." At least the first thing that I want us to see, write this down. Everything around me can shake without who is within me being shaken. Everything around us in this world can shake, can shift, can change without he who is within me being shaken. I want us to understand this because a lot of us, we've built our life on the wrong theology where we wrongfully think that if God is really with me, then nothing in my life should go wrong. If he's really with me, then I should never be shaken up by anything in this life. Turn your neighbor, look in the eyes and tell him, "That's not in here." Jesus says the opposite in John chapter 16. He's talking with his disciples. Right before he's arrested, he shares his time with them and he knows from this moment on everything is going to change. They're going to watch him get arrested. They're going to watch him being vitally crucified and hung on a cross to die. He knows they're going to scatter and he knows eventually they will be persecuted for being his followers. Jesus, he doesn't pretend with them. He doesn't say, "Hey, guys, everything is going to be great." He tells the truth. He tells him plainly, John 1633, he says, "In the world, you will have what?" Tribulation. Not minor inconveniences, significant challenges, persecution, he says, "You will have tribulation.

It's a promise." But then he says this, he says, "Take heart. Take heart. Why? For I have overcome the world." Jesus didn't say, "Hey, follow me and nothing will shake in your life." No, he says, "Everything will shake." But I've overcome everything that can be shaken. Church, listen, I know life can shake sometimes. I know your relationships can feel insecure. Your finances can shake. Your health can be on shifting sands. Everything around you can shake, but that doesn't change the one who lives within you. This is why I'm setting all this up. This is why everything that we've- he's not simply seated on a throne somewhere far away where you can't approach him. Where is he? In us, in us. We've talked throughout this entire series of who the Holy Spirit is. We started in Romans 8, we read that today, beginning of service, it says, "If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you. He's in you. He's with you and he's in you." And he gives all of us gifts and he grows his fruit and his character within us. He strengthens us. He leads us. And when everything around you feels like it's constantly shifting, he's the same. He's secure. He's not shaken. He hasn't gone anywhere.

As we talk about overflow, listen, the evidence of overflow is not that everything around you is always going well. The evidence of overflow is revealed when things are shaken up. You sat in the front row. Thank you. Like at SeaWorld, this is a splash zone. What's within you spills out when you're shaken, right? When life shakes you up, what comes out of it is what? What's inside? Why is he spilling water? I'm not. I'm just shaking this up and what's inside of it comes out. Let me ask you what's coming out. When life is shaken up, when things get difficult, what's coming out of you? Is it anger? Fear? Is it anxiety? Is it control? Let me tell you what God wants. He wants for us to mature in him and surrender to him so that when we are shaken up, what comes out of us is more of him, is more of his spirit. The book of Romans gives us a picture of this overflow of what it looks like in the life of Abraham. If many of you are familiar with the story of Abraham, God said, I'm going to make you a father of many nations. God gave him a promise that he would have a child, an Abraham waited, and he waited, and he waited, and he waited. God's promise was real, but the circumstances surrounding Abraham seemed impossible. The writer in Romans is what he says in chapter 4 verse 18 and on, "In hope he believed against hope, he believed against all odds that he should become the father of many nations,

as he had been told, so shall your offspring be," verse 19, "he did not weaken in his faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead because he was 100 years old, or when he considered the bareness of Sarah's womb, no unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, fully convinced that God was able to do as he promised." I love this example because Abraham didn't deny the facts. He knew what was actually happening. He considered all the facts, right? He knew he was too old to have a child. He said, "I'm as good as dead." That's his words, not mine. He knew his wife was past the child-bearing age she was barren. He considered the facts, he didn't deny the facts, but he didn't trust the facts more than the faithfulness of God's promise. The character of God was stronger than the circumstances that Abraham was experiencing and church, the same is true for us. I'm not trying to downplay what you're going through, I'm not trying to downplay the shifting foundation and ground that a lot of us feel like we're trying to balance ourself on, but I'm telling you, it doesn't have the final word, amen? Our circumstances don't have the final word, which leads to the second thing I want you to write down, write this out. The Holy Spirit doesn't always stop the shaking. He strengthens me in it. He doesn't always stop it. He strengthens me in it. That's the promise. Those things I had to learn about the Holy Spirit. See, a lot of us, we think that the proof of the power... And God does that. He does that sometimes. Are you glad that God takes away the challenges sometimes? Yes? You glad that God opens up a door and God brings a healing and God answers the prayer the

way you pray? I'm grateful. Continue to pray that way. Continue to believe in that God. That's the God I believe in, right? Turn your neighbor, tell him my God can do all things. He certainly does that. But sometimes a greater miracle isn't that he immediately moves me out of my situation or immediately takes away the thing that's a challenge to me. Sometimes the greater miracle is what he's doing within me while I'm still in it. Paul in Ephesians chapter 3, he's praying for this church that he loves. I want you to notice what he asked for in his prayer. It's a little bit different than our prayer. Ephesians 3, 16, he says that according to the riches of his glory, he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his spirit where? In your inner being. He doesn't pray that God removes every difficulty around them. What does he pray? He prays that something within them is strengthened by his spirit. We have spent a whole lot of time over the past several weeks talking about the power of the Holy Spirit. He's still active. He's still speaking. He's still gifting today. But church, don't relegate his power simply to someone operating in spiritual gifts. That's not the extent of his power. Sometimes his power is most greatly displayed in the fact that you didn't give up. Sometimes the greatest display of his power is that you've forgiven someone that you thought you could never forgive. That you're in the middle of a situation that is precarious and you have peace in your heart and mind and you're not panicking. In my life, those have been the greatest displays of the power of the Spirit. Me waking up in the morning, discouraged, but having faith to take another step forward, even though I don't feel like it, thank you God. In my life, a great display of his strength has been me lifting up my head and lifting up my hands while tears are streaming down my face because I don't know what to do. I'm not a stranger to darkness. Two years ago, I shared this very publicly, but I had significant heart issues. My wife had a thyroid issue that wasn't diagnosed, and for nine months, we had no idea what was going on with her to change everything about her personality, and we generally thought that the ground beneath us was shaking. A few years prior to that, it was the darkest season of my life. I was depressed. I constantly questioned myself of, "Do I still have what it takes to lead people?" In a few weeks, we're starting a new teaching series where we're going to look at God's Word, and we're going to find ways to strengthen our mental health and have what the Bible calls peace of mind. But until we get there, let me tell you how I got through every one of those

circumstances, every one of those situations. How I was able to get through those dark moments wasn't because of my grip on God, and I had a firm grip on God. I was gripping for all of my life. It wasn't my grip on God. It was God's grip on me. He held onto me. He kept me secure. Hebrews 9-16 tells us that Jesus is the anchor of our soul. He's the one who keeps us steady and secure while all the wind and waves are crashing against our vessel. He's our anchor. I was weak. I didn't have strength, but He's strengthened me from within to take a step of faith forward. So many moments where I didn't have the answer. I didn't know what to do. Maybe that's where some of you are at today, you are questioning, you are crying out to God. God, when will you get me out of this? How long do I have to go through this? Save me. Listen, if that's your prayer, continue to pray that. That's a powerful prayer. We can cry out to God. We can share whatever is in our hearts, continue to believe for the miracle, continue to ask him to open up the door, to bring the healing. But while you're doing that, while you're praying for God to get you out of this, don't miss what he's trying to do within you while you're in it. He wants to grow you. He wants to build you. Overflow isn't being so filled with the spirit that everything in our life is perfect. Having an overflow of the spirit of God is being so surrendered and submissive and obedient to his leading that when you are shaken, what comes out of you is Jesus, his character, his fruit, that Lisa, our third idea. And this is where it gets practical. This is where we put feet to our faith. Here's how this applies. An unshakable faith still worships in a shaking world. Still worships in a shaking world.

Listen how this passage ends verse 28 again, Hebrews 12, "Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship with reverence and awe, with honor being amazed by who He is, the appropriate response for us having the understanding that we are part of a kingdom that cannot be shaken because the spirit of the living God lives within us is not here's the answers, here's the explanation. The answer is worship. Church, God wants to mature us and mature worship moves beyond simply worshipping God for what He's done and it turns into I worship Him for who He is regardless of what He's done. When the answer is to prayers, we worship. When He heals the sickness. Oh, He's worthy of my worship. He opens the door, I will worship Him and we should and it's good but what happens when He hasn't yet? Can we still worship Him while we're waiting? Is He still worthy even though everything around us feels shaken? I'm telling you, I love this church for me because we worship God so well. There's a worship that we've learned to give Him praise for what He's done but there's a worship that we must learn while we're still waiting. All throughout Scripture we have so many examples of people who worship God before they had the answer, worship God while everything around them was still shaking in 2 Chronicles chapter 20. Judah, they're surrounded by a massive military army and they don't have the resources. They don't have the manpower. All they have is a promise from God who said, "I will deliver you if you stand strong." And so what did they do? Did they retreat? Did they freak out? Did they give up? No.

They worshiped and God brought salvation. Many of you may be not familiar with the prophet, the minor prophet Habakkuk. Habakkuk, 317, he's in a season where there's literally nothing to eat, no fruit on the vine, no animals in the field, everything around him is saying there's no, there's no reason to worship. Listen to his response, Habakkuk, 317, "Though the fig tree should not blossom nor fruit be on the vines, the produce of the olive fail and the fields yield no food, the flock be cut off from the fold and there be no herd in the stalls, there's nothing around me to celebrate, yet I will rejoice in the Lord and I will take joy in the God of my salvation." He's not denying the facts. He's simply declaring, "My God is worthy of my worship regardless of what's happening around me." Amen? David did the same thing all throughout the Psalms. He writes constantly, "God, how long? When will you rescue me? Why are my enemies surrounding me? Why is all this happening?" And so many of these songs that he's written in Psalms, nothing changed from the moment but yet throughout all of them he says, but yet I will still praise you. You're still worthy. You are my redeemer, my stronghold, my say, I'm not in it right now, God. I feel surrounded, but you are my victory. This is the lesson that Paul and Silas learned. In the book of Acts, they were preaching Philippi. And after they set a young girl free from an evil spirit, her slave owners were upset. And so they had Paul and Silas arrested.

The crowd joined in attacking Acts 16, 22. The crowd joined in and attacking them. The magistrates tore their garments off and gave them orders to beat them with rods. And when they inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, ordering the jailer to keep them safely. Having received this order, he put them in maximum security. He put them in the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. I've been to prison enough times to know that there's nothing worthy of praise there. Let me clarify that. I've been to prison ministry, enough times. It's okay, listen, it's okay. Perfect place for imperfect people to experience this presence. Those prisoners, they're saying, there's nothing worthy of praise behind these bars. How much worse for Paul and Silas? This was ancient torture. They beat them, they flogged them, they humiliated them. There's no three square meals a day or earn your GED. Their feet were locked in stocks. Yet what do they do? For 25, about midnight, Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God and the prisoners were listening to them. They were praying and singing hymns. They were praying and praising. I love that the Bible tells us the time.

What time was it? Midnight. If you're young, I wanna tell you a fact, nothing good happens at midnight. Amen. Amen. It's dark outside. You don't know what tomorrow. They would not have an answer until the next morning, they had no idea what their future would hold. It's dark, dank, they're locked up. But what do they do? They prayed and they praised and everyone heard them. They could not leave, the door was locked, but they did what they could do. They lifted up their song to the Lord's. Their feet were in stocks, they couldn't move, but what they had free, they used, they lifted their hands, they lifted their eyes, they lifted their song. ♪ Late in the midnight hour ♪ ♪ God's gone to turn it around ♪ ♪ He's gone to work in my favor ♪ They knew this, they sang this. And what did God do? Oh, church, verse 26. Suddenly, there was a great earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately, all the doors were opened and everyone's bonds were unfastened. Come on.

They worshiped when everything around them was shaken and what did God do? God shook the thing that was shaking them. He shook the ground. He shook the walls. He shook the prison bars. He broke open, there's stocks, and everybody got set free. Everybody, that's overflow. Telling you, there is power in your worship when everything around you is going wrong. When your children see that grandma is sick, but mom and dad are still giving God praise 'cause he's good, it sets people free. When they know we don't have enough to buy that thing, but mom and dad still have a smile on their face, thinking they're gods, it frees people. Everyone was free. I wanna make this clear. This is not a formula, okay? This isn't if we sing loud enough, God will give us whatever we want. That's not worship, that's manipulation. We don't worship God just to get what we want. We worship him because he's worthy whether or not we have what we want, amen? Church, I absolutely believe that something spiritually significant happens when the people of God worship when everything is shaking around them.

The Bible says that darkness has to flee. That strongholds, that they lose their supports. Physically, our anxiety gets less influential to our minds, our fear fleas, why? Because it changes our perspective. It takes our eyes off of what we want. onto the one who holds all things together. Changes our perspective. Let's stand to our feet right now. What is shaking you? That's the question I wanna leave you with. Not rhetorical, you don't have to say it out loud, but think of it, name it. What is the thing that is shaking in your life right now? Whatever that is, I wish I could tell you from the time you leave this place, God's gonna, He's gonna turn it around. I can't promise that, but what I can't promise is what He promised. He promises us that we haven't inherited a kingdom that cannot be shaken because the unshakable God lives within us. So when you are shaking up and what comes out of you is anger, control, fear, worry, anxiety. The solution church here, the solution isn't, I need to try harder not to act that way. No, that's not the solution. What you can start doing today that will transform you into who God wants you to be for tomorrow is to worship.

It's to worship Him. Worship doesn't magically take away all the bad things in our life. Let me make that clear. Worship is a perspective change. Worship refocuses our eyes off of the things around us to see who's above us, who's within us. It realigns our heart and our minds when they're being lied to by ourselves or others. It's not gonna work out, it's not gonna come to pass. It realigns our thinking on to what He's promised us. And when we worship God, when everything around us is going wrong, it helps shape us into who He's called us to be. And it overflows, it overflows to those around us, who are family who's struggling with the cancer diagnosis, to our children, who are wondering why they don't have, what their friends have. It overflows and it sets people free, amen. I'm gonna ask our prayer partners to come forward right now. What we're gonna do is we're gonna put our teaching to action today. We're gonna practice what we preach today. If you're here and there's something shaking in your life that feels impossible, overwhelming, I wanna invite you to come forward, receive prayer. You don't need to tell us a whole story, you don't need to come up the right words, just come forward. We wanna pray with you, we wanna pray for you, we wanna fight for you in this we wanna embrace you

and lay hands on you and lift you up to our heavenly Father who hears and we wanna believe God's best for your life to let you know that you're not alone. And for the rest of us, don't watch, let's worship. Let's be like Paul and Silas and put this into practice that shake the walls and the roof in the ground of this place with our worship saying, Lord, you are worthy of it all. That's the only, encourage you to come forward. And as you come forward, I'm gonna pray for the needs of every person in this place. And then that we're gonna praise him, amen. Father, I thank you that we are not alone. Not only are you with us and us, but you've given us a church familiar that will not allow us to go through this by ourselves. Lord, I pray for every need represented in this room, for every person who got a diagnosis of a sickness for every relationship that feels fractured, for every prodigal child who's gone away, for every finances, that deceived, impossible lords, we believe your promise. We believe that we have all the things we need in you that you will supply all of our needs according to your riches and glory. We believe that you are a God of peace and reconciliation and hope and healing God. And even if our brain doesn't believe it, Lord, I pray as we sing out your praises that you would bring overflow and breakthrough in Jesus' name.

Come forward if you need prayer, let's praise him. This is us worshiping and let our praises overflow even in the middle of our problems. Whatever is shaking you, can I give you another promise? Philippians 2, 9 tells us that God bestowed upon Jesus the name above every other name, that at his name every knee should bow, every tongue confess, that Jesus is Lord. His name is above everything, fear, sickness, anxiety, brokenness, all of it has to go. The enemy has to flee at the name of Jesus, and Christ follower, he's giving you that name. He's giving you the authority of his name, and so when we pray in Jesus name, he hears our prayers. He answers our prayers, when we live according to the name of Jesus, things change. So let's speak his name, the name that's above every other name, speak his name over whatever is shaking your life right now, God we speak your name of our families, of our children, of our homes, our workplaces, of our savings, our bodies.
