Living in the Overflow

condition for many years and she found her healing when she encountered Jesus. It says this, "When there was a woman who had a discharge of blood for 12 years and who had suffered much under many physicians and had spent all that she had and was no better but rather grew worse." She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind them in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said, "If I touch even his garments, I will be made well." And immediately the flow of blood dried up and she felt in her body that she was bleeding and she was healed from her disease. And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone on from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, "Who touched my garments?" And his disciples said to him, "You see the crowd pressing around you and yet you say, 'Who touched me?'" And he looked around to see who had done it. But the woman knowing what had happened to her came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. And he said to her, "Your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be healed of your disease." What I love about this story is that this woman, being a month's a crowd, was only focusing on Jesus. She didn't care who was next to her. She didn't care what they were going to say. She was seeking her healing and she founded that day because of her faith. And like her, we're here today in a crowd. And I encourage you to do it as we worship. Fix your eyes on Jesus. Don't worry about who's next to you. Don't worry about what happened before, what's happening after. Be present in this moment because God is in this room. If you can pray with me, you can close your eyes right there and say, "Lord, I am here. I'm here to worship you. I'm here to encounter you. I'm here to receive from your presence. No matter what I'm caring for the God, I know that you can provide whatever I need. All I need is found in you." Thank you, Jesus. ♪♪♪ ♪ And how I live for the moments where I'm still in your presence ♪ ♪ And all noise dies down. Lord speak to me now ♪ ♪ You have all my attention. And I believe in this sin. I can't miss something. Lord, I know my life wants more of you. My heart wants something new, so I surrender all. And all I have is to live within your love. Be undone like me. My desire is to know you deeper. Lord, I love it up and forth. Though I came into the room, I am desperate for a touch of heaven.

And if you're here today and there's something going on in your world and you need prayer, I'd invite you to come forward right now. We'd love to pray with you and love to stand in the gap. Sometimes we're so eager to invite the Holy Spirit into our world and invite and in worship and in praise, but the thing that needs the Holy Spirit the most we have not yet invited Him into. And if you're here today and there's something going on that you have not invited God's presence into, invited He's healing into, invited His protection into, I'd encourage you to come forward. We'd love to pray with you. And maybe you don't have the words while the Holy Spirit that we are singing of in dwells in each one of these prayer team members and He will give them the words to say. The words of encouragement, the words of truth, the words of God's promises over your life. Don't worry about the people next to you, we'll make room. But maybe you're here and there's nothing specific going on in your world. We get to lift each other's burdens in prayer, bringing them to the feet of God as a community. And so I'm gonna pray for a handful of prayer requests representative of the many. If you're comfortable this morning, would you just extend a hand in agreements? God, we come before you, recognizing your spirit and your presence and your power.

And we say, thank you. Thank you that you meet us. Thank you that you lead us. Thank you that you guide us. Thank you that you show up. Thank you that even when we don't feel it that you're here, Lord. We pray that you would continue to show up and work and move in the lives of the people who call this place home. God, we lift up the burdens of your house right now. God, we pray for Marilyn, Lord, who's got some health issues going on in her heart. It's God and we don't know all the details and we don't know all the answers. But you do, that you are a healer. You are a great physician. And so we put her heart in your hands, believing that you're going to work a miracle in her life. God, believing that you will continue to reveal yourself to her, that you will show your grace and mercy in her life in this circumstance. God, we pray for Claudette right now. 'Cause as the walls just seem to be caving in around her, Lord, that family life is tough, that things are getting rough. But God, you tell us that you are our spirit of peace, that you are this stable,

as the walls calm to fall down. God, that you are our column, that we can hold tight too until we, God, we pray alongside Claudette. She would hold firm to you, believing that you will be hurt through this season, that you are not done with her, that you will provide, that you will make a way, that you can repair what no man can repair. God, we pray the name of Jesus, that you would show up in her circumstance, that we pray right now, recognizing what happened to our country, 25 years ago, go, God. We pray right now that your peace would meet every single victim where they are. We pray that you are continuing to rebuild, that hearts and minds are being focused on you. God, that you're using this for your good, that you are working in all things. God, we pray for the people in this room right now, who are battling things seen and unseen, spoken and unspoken, God. We pray for those who are battling fear and anxiety. And we cast it out that the name of Jesus, would remove any fear that's happening in this room right now. God, we pray for the people who are battling things, who are worried about where the next paycheck is going to come from.

God, I pray that you would make a way. We pray for the finances in this room. We pray for the protection needed in this room. We pray for the guidance needed in this room. We thank you that you have guided us thus far. We thank you that you are leading us. We thank you that you show up. We thank you that you provide. We thank you that you bless. We thank you for your overflow. We love and praise you. It's your great name, we pray. Amen and amen. Years ago, I got to spend a few minutes with him on a plane ride from Dallas to Charlotte. It was a joy to talk to him. And he shared with me, Dan, my favorite verse of scripture. It's John 3, 16, and he quoted it for God so loves the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes in him would not perish but have everlasting life. And I said, "That's a great verse." And he got a twinkle in his eye and said, "Yeah, but I got a better one." And it goes like this, for God so loved Billy Graham that he gave his only begotten son that if Billy Graham would believe in him, Billy Graham would not perish, but Billy Graham would have everlasting life. For God so loved the world that he gave. Love gives. This is a reason that we pause every week during worship and say, "Lord, we give you our praise, we give you our hearts, we give you our lives, we also give you from our finances."

So our service guys are gonna pass some buckets whether you give here or online or any other way. Thank you for giving. Thank you for being generous. Love gives. That's what it does. Let's pray together. Father, thank you so much that you gave your son to us. We know we are loved. I like it. My name is Dan Sutherland. I'm one of the pastors here at the local church. My privilege to lead us today is we wrap up this series called "Overflow." It's been a fun series. It's been a series of stretching our understanding of the spirit of God. I grew up in a church where we were afraid of the spirit. It was kind of like God the Father, God the Son

and something, something, something spirit. Didn't really know what to do with him. Didn't really understand him. And it's been a joy for me to journey to the place where I do understand more of how he works in our lives. This series has been a great piece of that. Pastor Eric has led us, we talked in week one. Here's a review, first set of things to write in your notes. Ready? The spirit is with us and within us. That was the idea behind week one. He's with us, but he's also within. When we give our lives to Christ, when we say yes to Jesus, the spirit of God takes up residence. He no longer is an outside for speaking into us. He's now an inside voice that can direct us, coach us, convince us, correct us. Big difference. Second week, we talked about the fact that the spirit gives us for service. He gives us for service. He's given you certain things that you're good at. Part of that, so you can make a living, aim into that. We all need to make a living. But part of that is so that you can find your place to serve within the kingdom, a place that fits your giftedness. Week three, the spirit changes our character. and how the Spirit brings those changes into our lives. Week four, we talked about keeping in step with the Spirit, the idea of a spiritual rhythm,

the idea that we walk in the Spirit, live in the Spirit, keeping step with the Spirit. Last week, Pastor Eric taught us that the Spirit invites us or rather the Spirit wants to make us unshakable. Great teaching last week, it was, I thought the building was gonna shake for a minute, it was just an amazing, amazing time. If you missed any of those five good news or all online, you can watch and catch up because each of these truths stacks on top of the previous week. That's what we have covered so far. Today we're going to talk about living in the overflow. That's the idea for today's teaching. But before we get to it, let me spend five minutes on this thing called the Trinity that many times makes us wonder exactly what's going on in the first century. Christians began to get this feedback. Are you guys confused? I mean, sometimes you talk about God the Father and sometimes you talk about God the Spirit and sometimes you talk about God the Son. Y'all sound confused and it was a fair statement toward us because we hadn't really laid out how all that fit. And Jesus told us about each of the three, the Father, the Son and the Spirit, but there's no place in scripture that uses the word Trinity. In fact, Trinity is a second century invention, not first century, so let me give you a little history. First century Christians were struggling with some confusion.

Second century church leaders came up with this word Trinity, which literally means triune. Literally three in one for their description of God. So we're going to touch the base on that quick. Write this in your notes, we'll come back to it. We got more time. God the Father, called Jehovah in the Old Testament, is ruling from the throne of heaven. Get that picture in your head. The Father is ruling from the throne in heaven. That's what he's always done. That's what he will always do. First Chronicles tells us, "Yours Lord is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor for everything in heaven and earth is yours." New Testament, first Corinthians. Yet for us there's one God, the Father, from whom all things and for whom we exist. Ephesians says, "One God, one Father of all, who's over all and through all and in all." Great verse. God the Father on the throne in heaven where he rules. God the Son, Jesus is praying for us in heaven. It's a cool, cool thing that Scripture teaches. He's always prayed for us. He prayed for us before he came to earth as a baby. Then he intervened for us to show us the way of salvation. And now he's back in heaven where he prays for us. Look at Romans, it says, "Christ Jesus who died and more was raised to life is at the right hand of God

and is interceding for us." This blows my mind. God the Father in charge, listening to prayers, God the Son, our advocate, our intercessor, our prayer warrior intervening for us. That's a pretty powerful place of prayer. Hebrew 7 says, "Jesus lives forever." Why? To intercede with God on our behalf. So God the Father on the throne ruling. God the Son next to the throne praying for you and for me, turn to your neighbor and say, "I'm glad to know Jesus prays for you." Go ahead, tell him. Yeah, we all need a little divine prayer, no doubt. God the Spirit then, the Holy Spirit is the person and the presence of God in our lives right now. Grabbing all this. So who do I pray for? I'm gonna pray to the God who is on the throne, listening for those prayers, God the Father. Who's praying for me? Jesus the Son. Who is the person and the presence of God in my life right now? Well, we say yes to Him, He moves in. Look at what Jesus said about the Spirit, and I will ask the Father, why? 'Cause the Father's on the throne. 'Cause Jesus prayed to the Father,

and He will give you another helper to be with you forever the spirit of truth. Whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. You know Him for He dwells with you and will be in you. Romans 8, 11, the Spirit of God who raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. Think He could change your character? I don't know. He raised Jesus from the dead. What do you think? He can, the same Spirit to conquer the earth lives in a, so grab that picture. God the Father, He reigns from heaven. He rules from the throne. God the Son, Jesus, praying for us next to the Father, but it is the Spirit of God who's present in our lives today, the person and the presence of God for us. One God, three persons. Now does that clear it up? No. It's a small piece of understanding, but no, it doesn't. I had somebody say to me the other day, "I don't understand your God." And I looked at Him and said, "I don't want a God that you can understand. I don't want a God that I can understand." He said, "The limited to your IQ or my IQ,

both of those are scary thoughts." The Scripture says His ways are not our ways, His thoughts are not our thoughts, but He gives us glimpses. And that's why the Spirit of God, that's why this study is a big thing to us. Understand His place in the Trinity. Understand His place in our lives. So write this in. Here's the big idea coming into today's teaching. The Spirit works in us and through us. That's what He does. He works in here, changing me, making me more like Jesus. And then He works through me in the lives of others, helping them to become more like Jesus. Living in the overflow is our title today. Listen to this awesome, awesome verse in John 738. Jesus says, "Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, out of His heart will flow rivers of living water." That phrase is gonna be our entire focus today. Out of His heart will flow rivers of living water. The Scripture tells us a definition of faith. In Hebrews, it says, "Faith is the assurance of things we hope for, and the evidence of things unseen." Expectation plays a part in faith. What do we expect God to do? This verse gives us three expectations in that one statement out of His heart

will flow rivers of living water. Each one builds on the other. The first expectation, you're ready? Expect God to work in you. I almost put work on you in these blanks, 'cause He does both. He works on us by working in us. He works in me to make me more like Jesus and less like Sutherland. I've never had a single person in the world tell me, we could use a little more Dan Sutherland in this world. Nobody's ever told me that. But I know a bunch of us think we could use a little more Jesus, a little more of His character, a little more of His love, and joy, and peace, and patience, and kindness, and goodness, and gentleness, and faithfulness, and self-control. The nine things that are talked about in the fruit of the Spirit. The first place Jesus works is in our hearts. Look again at the verse, it's an important idea. Whoever believes in me out of His heart will flow rivers of living water. God works in His heart first. He works in my character first. He changes me first, right at end. The Spirit's first goal is to change me by making me more like Jesus. That's what He does. Little less Dan, little more Jesus,

little less Dan's anger, little more Jesus' kindness. Little less Dan's short fuse, a little more of Jesus' patience. And again, the verse it talks about through the Spirit. Let's read it in one more time. The Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. You and I can expect God to work in us. Turn to your neighbor and say, I'm expecting God to work in you. That's got a little edge to it. I like it. That's the idea. Expect God to work in you. Secondly, expect God to work through you. The church, this is important. He can't do through you in the lives of others what He hasn't already done in you in your own life. You're not gonna be able to help somebody else handle their anger till you learn to handle your anger. You're not gonna be able to help somebody else to be more kind till you've learned to be more kind. You can't give away what you don't have. I'd love to give you all a million dollars. Here's the bad news. I don't have any. Really not very helpful to hear that I want to. What can I do? So God works in me changing me to be more like Jesus so that He can work through me.

And the verse there again says out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. First place God works is in my heart. He works in me, but He does it so He can flow out of me. He does it so that I can spill out on others. Now, don't miss this church. You're already spilling out on others. All of us were spilling out on the people around us. If we're frustrated, we're spilling out frustration. If we're mad, we're spilling out anger. By the way, those of us who make a living being mad at the U.S. government get over it. All you're doing is telling everybody in your life I'm mad at the world. We know, we see it. You want to do something about it that's different. You want to get active, that works. But God has to do it in us before He can do it through us. And so this is talking about God's going to work in me. Write it in. God works in me so that He can work through me. We've said that several times these last few weeks. He wants to do something here so He can do it out here. Parents, you ever tried to teach your kids something you don't know like algebra? Or like how to have a quiet time? Or how to seek God? Or how to hear God's voice? We learn those lessons for ourselves. We also learn them so we can pass them on.

Now we've all had this experience, but let me describe it. If you've walked with Christ for very long, you've probably experienced this at least once. A moment for God uses you to help somebody else. That awesome moment when God uses you to give them a word of what to do about what they don't know. Or when God uses you to encourage them. Or when God uses you to bring them to faith in Christ. Or God uses you to serve them. And it is an awesome moment. Wow, it is awesome. Write this in your notes. The greatest thrill there is happens when God works through us. What this verse calls overflowing. He works in me in my heart and then overflows through me to others. It's the greatest thrill there is. Now, church, I'll admit this to you. I am a certified thrill seeker. I like going 100 miles an hour. I like going with my hair lit on fire. I like going for it. I don't like leaving it on the field. I don't want to leave it in the stands. I want to leave it on the field. I want to go all the way. But there is no thrill like being used by God. Nothing else touches it. Jesus talked about it.

Look at John 14. Anyone who believes in me will do the same thing. It's talking about this truth. The work of Jesus has multiplied because now he can work through every believer. This is why the Spirit of God dwells in each of us so that Jesus can flow out of me to someone else. And he can flow out of you to your neighbor, your workmate, your family member, your friend. God's plan to change the world is called the church. It's to take believers and put His Spirit in them and flow through us. So God works in us to flow through us. You can expect God to work through you. This is a huge idea, a huge idea. Now let me put up a warning sign right here. Here's the warning sign. When God does work through you, when He does something good through you, don't take the credit for it. You see, if you and I start doing this, patting ourselves on the back, oh, look at me. Yeah, I got my stuff together. Look at me. When I take credit, write this in your notes, when I take credit for what God does, God stops doing it. Period. When I take credit for what God does, God stops doing it. He doesn't share His glory with anyone. This is why the Old Testament says He's a jealous God who doesn't share His glory. He doesn't share the credits. I've sat outside many times after the teaching and you guys come by and you will typically say some of you on a regular basis. Dan, great teaching. Thank you so much. If you remember what my response is, go God. Thank you, go God. Translation must have been Him. Couldn't be Me. We've got this confusion about the area of pride. When we're proud, God's against us. When we're humble, He's for us. I don't know which side you want God on. The side that's for you or the side that's there to knock you down. Don't take credit when God's doing it. It's a big thing. First, we expect God to work in us out of our hearts. Secondly, we expect God to work through us out of our hearts. We'll flow, the Scripture says. Thirdly, we expect God to overflow out of us. Expect God to overflow out of you. Now, look at the verse carefully. It says, out of His heart will flow rivers of living water, continually fresh water. Spring fed up from the ground water. This one is huge. God works in us first so that He can work through us. And most of us are thrilled to death if God uses us occasionally. It's pretty cool. If we can see God work in us and through us once in a while, it's awesome.

What's the difference in God working through us and God overflowing out of us? He works through us occasionally. He wants to overflow out of us continually, without it continually. If that is an amazing thought, that's why it's called a river of living water. It flows constantly. It refreshes continually. It's the fountain of living water. Now, here's the big truth. Don't miss it. You're not the fountain because you're not the source, writer, and I cannot be the source of the living water, but I can't be the conduit. God is the source. And the only way I experience that living water is if I'm plugged in with Him. But if I let Him work in me and then through me and then overflow out of me, I can literally What a difference. What a God. What would it be like if we were so obedient that God could work in us continually, through us continually and overflow out of us continually? It'd be amazing. We'll tell you a story happened just a few weeks ago. My cute wife, who's here? Hi, cute wife. Raise your hands so they can see, yeah, she's about five foot nothing. Hi, see you later. We've had a deal for our 50 years of marriage and the deal has been like this. If one of us is down, the other one is going to attempt to not be down. If one of us is discouraged, the other one's going to attempt to not be discouraged at the same time. If one of us is just worn out, then the other one doesn't need to be worn out. It's been a goal so that one of us could help take care of the other one. Does that make sense? Hey, let's not be in the same boat at the same time when we're really struggling, really down, really tired, really discouraged. And we hit this moment a few weeks ago where I was worn out. I was just worn out. It was good stuff, but you could be worn out of doing good things.

You know, tired from doing good things is just a little bit sweeter tired than tired from doing the wrong things. I'm still tired. Man, I was discouraged, which I'm not discouraged often, and I'll say it. I said a little down. I said a little depressed. And I got home that evening thinking, "I don't know if I could share this with my wife right now or not." I don't know if she's not struggling with the same thing. But before I could say anything, she looked at me and said, "Honey, I'm discouraged. I'm down, and I'm tired." And I looked at her after a few seconds and said, "Can we continue this conversation at about an hour?" She said, "Sure." And I slipped out to my back porch, which at my house is where I talk with God. And I'd love to tell you that I prayed a very righteous, sounding prayer. But the prayer pretty much went like this, "God, what's going on? I'm down. I'm discouraged. I'm tired. I need her to pick me up." And she's down, and she's tired, and she's discouraged. What the heck? What's going on, God? If that's what I feel, it's what I pray. And after I sit there a few minutes, you whisper it into my soul, "I've got you both, Dan. I've got enough encouragement for both of you. Why don't you let me carry Mary instead of you carrying her? Why don't you let me carry you?" I went back in after about an hour and said, "Hey, babe, it's going to be all right. Yeah? Yeah. It's going to be all right. I can't give away what I don't have. I can't let God flow through me until He's flowing fully in me. But when He's flowing fully in me and flowing fully through me, He can overflow on those around all the time." Now, what gets in the way of the overflow? "My anger, that'll shut it now. My frustration, that'll shut it down. My not being in the Word, my not being in prayer, my not hanging around with Christ followers, all the things that God gives us to do. We can shut it down. But if we're plugged into Him, He works in us and through us and wants to overflow out of us." Here's what I learned in that moment, and I did not put this word in your notes, so I want you to write it in, in front of that blank that says, I have to come to the end.

Would you write the words sometimes? This is not always true, but I'm learning sometimes that it is. Sometimes I have to come to the end of me before I get to the start of God. Sometimes I gotta run out of my own encouragement before I turn to Him. I gotta run out of my own strength before I turn to Him. Sometimes. Some of you today are sitting here going, "Dan, I'm going through a tough time right now." Honestly, I'm not particularly thinking about God working in me or through me or overflowing out of me. I'm just trying to survive. I'm just trying to get by. Can I give you some encouragement today? Here's my word of encouragement for you. Write it in your notes. You don't have to have your life 100% together for God to use you. You don't have to have your life 100% together for God to use you. Use you, you know why? 'Cause if you have to have everything together to be used by God, God can't use anybody. None of us have everything together. We call ourselves the perfect place for imperfect people. Why is that? Because I don't have to be perfect to love you.

I don't have to be perfect to encourage you. I don't have to have my act 100% together for God to work in me and through me and flow out of me. That's the hope for all of us. We're gonna wrap up with a prayer today. And I'm gonna ask our prayer partners to come down front one more time. 'Cause some of you may want to come and pray with one of them during this prayer, during the songs we're gonna sing, two more of those. Here's the prayer, write it in your notes. Once you write it down and then pray it with me. You ready? Lord, fill me so you can flow through me. Can't give away what you don't have. Fill me, Lord, with you, so you can flow through me. Fill me, Lord, with you so I can love my family the way you love them. So I can be patient the way you're patient. Fill me, Lord, so you can flow through me.
