Keep in Step
What does it really mean to keep in step with the Holy Spirit?
As we continue our Overflow series, Pastor Dan Southerland teaches from Galatians 5 about learning to recognize the Spirit’s voice, follow His lead, and respond with obedience.
Following Jesus isn’t just a one-time decision. It’s a lifetime of surrender. Every day, we’re faced with the choice to follow what we want or what God wants. As we learn to walk with the Spirit, we learn His voice, His direction, and His rhythm for our lives.
In this message, discover what it means to:• Walk in step with the Holy Spirit• Recognize God’s leading in everyday life• Choose God’s way over your own• Practice constant and immediate obedience• Put the “10 Second Rule” into practice• Allow what God is doing IN you to work THROUGH you

“If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.” — Galatians 5:25
What is God teaching you, and what are you doing about it?
One Marie out of John 14, Jesus says this to his disciples at the Last Supper. If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate who will never leave you. He is the Holy Spirit who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him because it isn't looking for him and doesn't recognize him. But you know him because he lives with you now and later will be in you. No, I will not abandon you as orphans. I will come to you. Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you will also live. I love it when Jesus says that he will not abandon us as orphans. He's reminding us that he's giving us the Holy Spirit to be with us. We're never alone. So as we enter through these doors today and prepare our hearts to worship, we can know that he is in this room already. And so we just surrender at his feet. Whatever you're coming into this room with, you can leave it at the door. Anxiety, fear, worry, sickness. Everything has to flee at the name of Jesus. And so God, we lift you up this morning. We declare that you're in this room. Holy Spirit, have your way. We're ready for you, Jesus. We open our hearts. Holy Spirit, move in us. And have your way. We're hanging on every word. Every week at the local church, we worship through our praise. We worship through giving our attention to the word, but we also worship through a time of family prayer. Our prayer counselors are gonna come down front and be here. If you want somebody to pray with you or for you, right now, come grab one of them. But I have a handful of requests of the dozens that you gave us last week. We pray through these as a staff. We have the prayer team praise through them. I'd like for us to pray for a handful of them right now. So would you join me? You can lift a hand out to this direction if you would. Kind of says we're all in this together. Let's pray for these among us who've asked for our prayers. Lord, we pray today for a grandpa who's blessed enough to have a granddaughter who looks like a young child by the handwriting, who has reminded us that he has had cancer for the second time and she's praying for him and she's concerned for him. I pray you'd be a healer in that circumstance today. I pray you'd bring joy to that child's life. We pray for Dawn today who's dealing with high blood pressure and nobody's figuring out why. Be the great physician, Lord, be her peace. We pray for Natalie today who's pregnant, late term and has a child with uncontrolled movements that even the doctors don't fully understand.
We pray for wisdom for those helping her. We pray, Lord, for that child and for Natalie as well, that they would both be well and be healed and be used big time in your kingdom. And finally, Father, we pray for a wife who's asked us to pray for her non-believing husband. He's antagonistic, he makes fun of her faith. Lord, I pray today you'll strengthen her and her walk with you, but that by her faith, her husband would be one to you. So many other needs today, Lord. We give ourselves to you and we thank you for meeting us here in this place. We make this prayer in the name of the one who invites us to pray, in the name of Jesus, amen. Honor God with your money and the first part of everything you produce. Thank you guys for being as generous as you are. Thank you for giving like you do. Blessed to be part of this thing that God is doing in South Florida called the local church. We're in week four of a series called Overflow. And the point of this series is for us to increase our understanding of how the Spirit of God works in our lives. Now, I've slept since I heard last week. So, you have as well. So, let's review all three weeks of Overflow. If you've got your notes, here's the first stuff to write in. The Spirit is with us and within us. That's what Pastor Eric talked about on week one. He's not just with us. He's within us. Scripture teaches that when you surrender to Jesus, when you give your life to Him, that the Spirit of God moves in. in, takes up residence. He now has immediate access to our hearts, to our minds, to all that we are. Week two we talked about the Spirit gifts us for service. This is a pretty cool idea. God gives you supernatural abilities in certain areas, certain gifts. And the fun part of the Christian life is when you
find your area of giftedness. The frustrating part is when you're not functioning in your area of giftedness. One of my gifts is teaching. I love to teach. I love to take complicated things and try to make them simple for the people of God. It brings me joy. One of my gifts is not administration. You put me in a place of administrating something or of running something or taking care of details. Let's just pull the plug on the whole thing. Not my gift, not my joy, not what I do well. We work best when we work in our gift. And last week Eric taught us that the Spirit changes our character. He changes who we are. He takes anger and puts peace in its place. He takes despair and puts joy in its place. He produces the character of Jesus in us. And the more we walk with Jesus, the more we become like Jesus. All of this is such good stuff. Today we have one key verse, several others to support it. Let me give it to you. And it has the title of today's teaching in the verse in Galatians 5, that same chapter, where we look at the fruit of the Spirit. It says, if we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit. That's our title today, keep in step. There are three phrases in the Scripture that are used interchangeably for keeping in step with the Spirit. The first one is keeping in step. Write that in again. You're going to see that several times today. The next one is living in the Spirit. That's the second. And the third one that's used interchangeably with the other two is walking in the Spirit. In fact, all three of these are used in this same chapter of Galatians 5. Living in the Spirit, keeping in step with the Spirit, walking in the Spirit. Now, here's what they're about. They're about this thing called rhythm. Now, South Floridians love music. We particularly love something with the Latina beat, but we can hear a beat within it. We can hear a rhythm. And the problem is, some of us are totally living off beat with the rhythm of the Spirit of God. We're not keeping in step. We're not following His rhythm. We're not walking with Him. So, write this in. Spiritual rhythm refers to the ability to keep in step with the Spirit. The ability to hear His rhythm and walk in that rhythm and live in that rhythm. We did a series just before this one called Warning Signs. And in that Warning Signs series, we talked about sometimes the
Spirit says, stop. And when He says stop, we stop. Sometimes He says, yield. And when He says yield, we yield. Sometimes He says, you turn. Headed the wrong direction, then we repent. And we U-turn. Sometimes He says, deer crossing. You're dealing with a sensitive person here. Be kind. Go easy. And we try to be sensitive. And when the Spirit says, no parking, He's telling us, get out of neutral. Get out of a go-nowhere gear and get with the program. Start walking with Christ. All of those are rhythms. All of those are about keeping in step with the Spirit. Galatians 516, another verse, same chapter. Walk in the Spirit and you will not give in to the desires of the flesh. Now, I'm gonna say this a dozen different ways. Here's another one. Walking in the Spirit means to be constantly guided by the Spirit of God. Constantly guided by Him. Now, here's how this works. When you give your life to Christ, when you surrender to Him for the first time, here at the local church we often refer to that as saying yes to Jesus. When you say yes to Him, commit your life to Him. You begin a lifelong long set of choices. Two choices the rest of the way for your whole life. You ready? You can do what God wants, that's choice number one. Or you can do what you want, that's choice number two. And we all deal with this every single day. It's 8.30, service crowd. Let's see how honest we can be today. How many of you woke up this morning and just for a minute thought, I'm not sure I wanna go this morning? Anybody? Thank you, bless you, bless you, bless you. Yeah, I had the same thought. But then it occurred to me, you're teaching, you should go. I mean, there's some moments where the right thing
is just not particularly what we want to do. And yet, have you noticed, when you do it, you feel good about it? When you actually get up and go, you're glad that you got up and went. When you do the God choice, the right thing, the good thing, there's this thumbs up in your spirit. It's awesome, but that choice does not go away. You're gonna have that choice again this afternoon. Somebody's gonna say something hurtful to you and you're gonna have to choose. Do I bite them back or do I be kind? Am I gonna do what I want? Am I gonna do what God wants? Let's keep talking about that choice. One of those choices is self-centered. The other choice is God-centered. That's what it comes down to. One of those choices makes me feel good for the minute. Ha, ha, ha, I got even. Yeah, I love it. The other one blesses God and in the long run makes me feel even better. This is a battle that goes on, I hate to tell you this, for the rest of your life. I've been a Christ follower now for 53 years, a pastor for 52 of those years. I would love to sit here this morning and tell you that battle is gone, not true, not true. It just keeps going on.
And if you wanna feel better about it, Paul, who wrote half the New Testament, had the same battle. Read Romans seven later today, let me read a portion of it. Paul says, I want to do what's right, but I don't do it. Instead, I do what I hate. I want to do what is right, but I can't. I want to do what is good, but I don't. I don't want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway. Sound familiar? Does to me, been there, done that often. Here's what he's talking about, don't miss this. There are two voices in each of our heads, and they are there all the time. Two voices, one is the selfish voice, which is also the voice of sin, and it's advising you to go the wrong direction. Go ahead and give in to that temptation. Go ahead and cheat on that. Go ahead, take the illegal shortcut, go ahead. The other is the voice of the spirit, which is the voice of God, and we give in to one or the other. Now, who wins this battle? Who wins the struggle? There's an ancient parable that actually appears in several different cultures, all about 3,000 years ago. The Chinese claim credit for it, but the Chinese tend to claim credit for everything. So, I'm not real sure where it came from,
but it's been traceable for 3,000 years. You've heard it, it goes like this. All of us have two dogs inside of us. One's the good dog, who's loyal and loving and sweet, and one is the bad dog, who absolutely is mean and nasty and bites. Which dog wins? The dog we feed the most, write it in. Which one wins? The one you feed the most. If you're going through a stretch of life right now where you're feeding the flesh, you're looking at stuff you shouldn't be looking at, you're listening to stuff you shouldn't be listening to, you're hanging out with people you shouldn't be hanging out with, then that big, nasty dog inside of you is getting stronger and bigger and harder to handle. But, if we're reading the word of God, if we're praying, if we're getting up and coming at 8.30, even when we don't want to, if we are surrounding ourself with people that are Christ's followers and do. to walk with Him, then that dog that is the Spirit of God, that is the presence of God, gets bigger and stronger and stronger. Which one do we feed? Again, Galatians says, walk in the Spirit and you will not give into the desires of the flesh. It doesn't work to just say, I'm not gonna go there,
I'm not gonna do it, I'm not gonna do it. No, you gotta feed the Spirit. You gotta feed that presence of God in your life. Write this in your notes. Following Jesus is a one-time surrender followed by a lifetime of constant surrender. Oh, that's a big idea. That's why you hear us talk about it often here at the local church. I wish it was a one-time, one and done surrender. That would be cool. If I could just surrender one time to Jesus and the battle would be over. I would never fall again, I would never sin again, I'd never mess up again, that'd be pretty cool. I'm pretty sure my wife wants me to be more like that. It's not how it works. I have to continually surrender. I have to continually give in. So let's talk about it in two ways. Keeping in step with God means two specific things. First, it means constant obedience. The idea is I said yes to you this morning, I'm gonna say again yes to you the next time it comes up. And I said yes to you then and an hour from now when I have another choice, I'm gonna say yes to you again. In fact, Lord, my intention is to say yes to you all day long. I'd like to get to the end of the day and say I have obeyed.
It's constant obedience, constantly listening for the voice of God, constantly obeying the voice of God, constantly surrendering, constantly keeping in step with the Spirit. But here's the challenge, write it in your notes, we're gonna talk a lot about it. Importantly, keeping in step with the Spirit is a learned skill. Nobody comes to Christ and automatically has this skill. It's not how it works. It is a learned skill. It's a lot like marriage. Most of us date before we get married, we check the person out, we hang out, we spend time with them, eventually we get married, and then you get to know the real person. And then they get to know the real person. Following Christ is a lot like that. Most of us check out Christ before we say yes to him. We kick the tires, we visit some churches, we hang out with some Christians, we read some scripture, we may even pray some prayers. We check it out, but in all honesty, it's so mind-blowing, it's so amazing that we don't have a clue how deep and awesome and wonderful and challenging it can be. Following Jesus is a learned skill. Listening to the voice of the Spirit is a learned skill. So first, it's about constant obedience, but write this in as well.
Keeping in step with God means immediate obedience. And this one we can do something about. It means immediate, immediate obedience. Not just intention to surrender, not just planning to surrender, immediate surrender. My dad was a military guy, and he taught me this saying, he told me it came out of his military experience. Maybe you guys can verify, I don't know the source, but he said that was it, I don't doubt it. When he would say, when he would tell us something to do, he would look at us and say, boy, when I tell you to jump, you answer, yes sir, how high on your way up? Y'all heard that? I want immediate obedience. I don't want tomorrow obedience. I don't want later today obedience. I don't want your planning to obey. You jump when I say jump. That's the kind of obedience that God is looking for. And although it seemed extreme and rough and hard coming from my dad, it has served me so well because it's given me a heart to obey. If God tells me something, I actually want to do it. When God leads. me somewhere I actually want to go. It's about immediate obedience. So, here's one way we can all get a little bit closer to this. I've mentioned it before. I think it's the first time we've put it in our notes. Here it is. Practice the 10-second rule. Practice it. When the Spirit speaks to you, take action within 10 seconds. That's immediate action. Let's do some examples. You're driving along this afternoon, men, and the Spirit says to
you, you ought to let your wife know how much you love her more often. Now, you can make a mental note that says, I'm going to do that, or you can pick up the dang phone and do it. Do it on the spot. Don't put it off thinking I'm going to remember. Do it. Would God bring somebody to mind to pray for? Don't say, yeah, I'm going to make a note to pray for them. Stop on the spot and pray for them. I've been practicing this here with you guys. If I'm sitting outside, which I commonly do after I teach, and you come through the lobby and shake my hand and say, pastor, will you pray for me about such and such? I pray on the spot. Why? I'm not bright enough to remember, and I want to obey immediately. AJ and I have talked about this. There are moments where we will stop in the middle of the cigar shop and pray for somebody out loud, and people are looking at us, right? That's the point. I'm okay with it. I want them to know I'm a believer. I want you to know if you ask me to pray, I'm going to pray. I want the father to know if he tells me to jump, I'm going to jump. And if he brings something to mind, just like he's bringing some things to mind for many of us this exact moment, do it. Pull out your phone. Send the text. Pull out your phone. Make the call. When obedience is constant and immediate, don't miss this, the father starts giving us more to obey. Oh, now that's fun. Scripture says, Jesus said, you be faithful in a few things, I'll give you more things to be faithful in. You respond right to these things, I've got more to give you to do. I've got more for you to accomplish. Wow. I want to be known in heaven as someone who is immediately and constantly obedient so that God could say, hey, see my boy Danny Ray down there? See him? Watch this. He could tell me something to do and I will do it. That is the goal and it changes everything. Now again, it takes time to hear the voice of the spirit. You got to work at it. You got to respond to it every time you do hear it and know that God will keep giving it to you again and again. It gets to where he can put things into your mind and your heart and you get it quick. When I first got married, I did not understand that I was supposed to be able to read my wife's mind. Now she never said that, but she kind of expected me to know what she was thinking. She kind of expected me to know what she wanted. And I got to tell you on the front end, clueless, totally clueless, but as the years went by, I got where I could kind of do that a little bit. And there was a day, I do not know, it had to be 30 years ago now. We were at Flamingo Road pastoring
there with Garland and a bunch of you folks and she was getting her hair cut across the street and her nails done across the street. And she went one day because her car was in the shop, she asked me to take her. So at the end of the day, 4 or 4.30, I ran home, picked her up, brought her, dropped her there at the salon. And I thought, it's just an hour or so, I'll just wait outside. You know, I can sit in the car, have a little time to myself. It was pretty cool. And she got back in the car and neither of us said anything for about 30 seconds until she finally said, yeah, I know. I think it's too short also. I didn't say a word. That's what I said to her. I didn't say anything. Maybe you were thinking it. I'm not sure I have had a private thought in 20 years. I'm not sure because she has walked with me long enough in this marriage that time after time we'll be watching a TV show and I'll say something and she'll say, I was thinking the same thing or vice versa or that we'll say, what do you want to do tonight? And one of us will say something and the other will go, that's exactly what I was thinking. The two are gradually becoming one. And if we walk closely with God, if we live in the spirit, if we stay in step with the spirit of God, we begin to be able to hear his voice and to say yes. And to walk in obedience and it is an amazing, amazing thing. Here's the final verse, it's my favorite verse about this. Acts 17, 28 says, in him we live and move and exist. Wow, that's what it means to walk in the spirit, to live in the spirit, to keep in step in the spirit, to get to the place where you literally live
and move and exist in him. Three quick summary concepts, summary statements as we wrap this up. One, God works in me so that he can work through me. We gotta grab that order. He wants to change stuff in here so that he can change stuff out here. He wants to speak truth to me for me to live so I can speak it for others to live. He wants to work in me to work through me. Secondly, God will guide me constantly if I'll stay in step with the spirit. We've all had moments where God has told us something and it's been awesome. What would it be like for that to happen all the time? And lastly, God wants constant and immediate surrender. Continual surrender, 10-second rule surrender right now. Surrender. Are you surrendering today? Are you keeping in step with the living God? He wants to be in step with you and with me. Our prayer partners are gonna be down front again. We're going to pray in a moment. If you need to respond, come. We had a short time of worship singing wise at the front of the service. We left some of it for the backside. Pray with me right now.
