Looking to Jesus

I am a living, breathing, walking testimony I am a living proof of what the Lord has done I am the living, breathing, omnipotent, the holy, I am the living, breathing, omnipotent, the holy. Hallelujah! Thank you, Jesus! Thank you, Lord! Oh, worship you, Lord! Hallelujah! Look what the Lord has done! Look what the Lord has done! I'm going to preach, but if we could just take one moment and rear back and praise God for what He has done in us and for us. I'll never get used to it as long as I live to think that the Son of God would shed His blood so that I, a wretch, could become a son of the Most High God. Look what the Lord has done! Hallelujah to God! Oh, Lord, how many times have I referred to this as an eternal moment? The clock is ticking. Decisions will be made. Hearts will be stirred, and I'm asking today for the skill that it takes to preach. It's a gift. You handed it out, and hearing is a gift. Oh, thank you for hearing ears, and thank you for receptive spirits. I pray today that as your word is preached, that you will accomplish what it was sent for. In the name of Jesus, I pray, amen. Everybody said amen. Thank you for being seated. Smile at somebody on the way down. I want to read a passage from 2 Chronicles. Let me lay the foundation for it. The king is named Asa, and like most of the kings, they serve God for a while. Then they decide they need more help, and they need it more quickly. So they turn to other earthly means of help. So now Asa is under threat from the Syrian army and under threat from surrounding nations, and he calls on a foreign army to help him. And so Hanani, the prophet, comes to him and says, what have you done? Why didn't you call on the Lord? And then he said, the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth to show himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to him. In this you have done foolishly, therefore from now on you shall have wars. And what he was saying is, the sovereign God, the creator of the universe,

is sitting on his throne in glory, and his eyes are darting about, the eyes of Almighty God, looking for someone to bless, looking for someone to show his strength to, but he's looking for someone whose heart is loyal to him. If you dig deeply enough into that word, you find that loyal means whole, wholehearted, nothing held back, nothing doubted. Divided, God is looking around for somebody even in here today to show himself strong on your behalf if your heart is wholly committed, if your loyalty is without question. And Asa the king made the big mistake of thinking that people could help him. Some trust in chariots, some trust in horses, but we will remember the name of the Lord our God. But instead of going to the Lord as God, he tried the resources of unsaved, ungodly people. And the bad news was, Hannah and I said, now you're going to have to fight these wars all by yourself. And there will be plenty of them. It's called compromise. It's when you say you belong to God, but you don't think God can, or you don't think he will do it quickly enough. It's when you declare that you have faith in God no matter what, but when the right circumstance arises, you panic, and you compromise by calling on a power or a force or a help other than the Lord your God. In the early days of the church when the emperors reigned and the Christians were martyred, hunted, targeted, they were told, listen, you can make this easy on yourself. When you walk by the temple on your way to work, there's a little basin of incense, and there's a candle. Just walk by and get a pinch and put it on that fire. That signifies that you are loyal to Caesar.

It's a small thing. What's the big deal? You walk home from work, you didn't do it that morning, just walk by and take a little pinch of incense and throw it on the fire saying, Caesar is Lord. But the Christians refused to do it. Caesar was not Lord, and they were not willing to compromise who they were and what the Lord had done for them just to stay safe and keep their jobs. You go all the way back to the book of Daniel, and you find them, Shadrach, Meshach, Abednego. They were bent, bound, and determined to remain loyal to God. Their hearts were holy toward God, no compromise. And the first time they didn't bow, the king said, I'm going to give you a reprieve. Look, I'll give you a second chance. You're making a big deal out of this, and besides that, you're making me look bad. So the next time the trumpets blow, all you got to do is bow down. It's a little thing. Nobody cares. You're in a big crowd. Just bow down. But the three Hebrew children and all Christians, true Christians, know that if you compromise at all, you've compromised it all. There's no room for any compromise when you walk with Christ. The world should never intimidate you into doing what it wants you to do, and you should never be pushed into a corner to say, I need this job. I need this money. I cannot make a stink. I can't stand up and say that. I'll just leave it alone, and I'll quietly witness, and I'll go on about my Christian life. But that's not what the Bible calls for you to do.

In fact, it's easy to compromise. We all know how easy it is. We face the offers every day and the temptations every day. Let down in this area. Don't do that. Don't say that. You'll stir up strife wherever you are. And I turned over to Hebrews chapter 12. You've been there many times yourself. And I read these words. Therefore, we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses. Who are these witnesses? The previous chapter, a whole list of witnesses who would not compromise. Look at what they faced. Some of them are named. Others are unknown. They were sawn asunder. tempted. They were cut in two with the sword. They lived in caves and dens. They did without. But they said, there's something better waiting on me than anything that's in this world, and we will not compromise. And that's when the writer said, therefore, since we're surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight in the sin which does so easily beset us. Sin easily entraps us. Sin easily ensnares us. Does anybody believe what I'm preaching right now? The easiest thing in the world to do is sin, because all you have to do to sin is nothing. You don't put on the whole armor every day. You don't feed your soul every day. You don't separate yourself from the world every day. You fit right in, and you do everything that's comfortable, just so you can be a private Christian, a weekend Christian. And that's not how this thing works, brothers and sisters. He said, you've got to have a whole heart, a loyal heart, a dedicated heart. If you want God to fight your battles, you better do what God has called you to do. Lay your life down. Give up your desires, and let God take care of the results. Every weight and every sin that so easily ensnares us, and let us run with patience, the race that is set before us. And everybody knows these next words, looking unto Jesus. Before I go another step, let me tell you, you're going to live a miserable life

until you get your eyes on Jesus. Even if you're a believer, if you're constantly looking at you, inside of you, what's wrong with you? You're going to live an unfruitful, miserable life. When you take your eyes off yourself, and put them on Him, when you realize it's not what you did, it's what He did, and you stare at Him, God will take care of everything else. But, that's in the second verse. I looked over at verse 15, and I saw something else. Looking carefully. Verse 2 says, looking unto Jesus, but then the writer says, looking carefully, lest anyone fall short of the grace of God. Lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled. Lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. I'm preaching on compromise. Looking carefully. There it is. Looking carefully. Being observant. Monitoring closely. Lest anyone fall short of the grace of God. In this congregation, and watching me online right now, are lots of people who belong to the church, but they have fallen short of the grace of God. They're not saved. They almost got there. They're almost to that place, but they are not willing to give up everything. Hey, and everybody that would tempt, drag them down, and ensnare them. He said, look carefully, because people like this will infiltrate your life. Then he said, lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled. You see, there's another group, another group, and they do the worship thing. They love the Lord, but they've still got bitterness on the inside. They're bitter about yesterday, bitter about what happened to them, bitter about what somebody did to them. My daddy did this. My mother did that, and I want to tell you something. This bitterness thing is dangerous. A bitter father can raise a bitter family. A bitter mother can make bitter daughters. A bitter society. creates bitterness everywhere you go. And he said, you better look carefully and make sure that you're not one of the ones that gives yourself permission to be bitter. You want payback. You want revenge. You think they ought to pay for what happened. You want them to pay. He says, be rid of that. It's a cancer. And it will cause trouble and many will be defiled. You see everywhere a bitter person goes there's some kind of defilement that follows them. Is any anybody listening to me today? Then he said, look carefully lest there be any

fornicator. Now there's that word for the third Sunday in a row. Fornicator. That's sexual immorality. That's spiritual sexual immorality. That's compromise. That's saying, I love the Lord, but I've got other things in my life that I have to take care of. I have other affections for other things. Lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. Did you hear that? One little morsel of food caused him to give up everything God had promised him. That's called compromise. You see, I'm sure he told himself he didn't need much help from the devil. It's that big. Now some translations call it a pot of a bowl of stew. To me it doesn't even matter whether it's that big or that big. Are you willing to sell your birthright? Are you willing to forfeit your blessings just for a momentary small encounter of the flesh? That's why he said look carefully. Look very carefully, because people do it all the time and they tell themselves it ain't that big a deal. Pardon my grammar. It was a big deal to Meshach, Shadrach, and Abednego. It was a big deal to those early Christians who knew that if they did not throw a pinch of salt in Caesar's basin that they would end up in the Colosseum being eaten by lions and stabbed by Roman soldiers and gladiators. But they said, we found true life. There is no God but the real true and living God. We will not take a morsel of now and forfeit the blessings of eternity. So there's a warning for one of us. Look carefully. Look carefully. I'm gonna do a little pastoring here for a moment. I think that the Christian Church in America has substituted the Internet for the Scriptures. I think, I'll just say we, I think we do more scrolling than we do studying. I think it's more fun to scroll. You know why? Because there are pretty pictures. There are artist renderings. There are catchy titles and phrases and clickbait. And instead of concentrating to see what the Lord is saying in the Spirit, we just listen to men all the time. Men, their opinions, their regurgitations, even if it's Bible stuff, even if it's church stuff, we're letting them chew food for us and spit it out on us. God wants you to eat yourself. He wants you to pick up a fork and eat from the Word of God. He's prepared a table before you. There's a feast in front of you. But we've decided

that scrolling is easy. And I had somebody tell me after the first service with tears, thank you. I'm hooked. I asked the Lord yesterday, how can I get away from this? I need to read the Bible more. and quit listening to what men say about the Bible. Yes, that's what she said to me. See, here's the deal. That whole YouTube thing, that whole social media thing is nothing but a pile of mixed opinions about everything on earth. And some are good and some are bad, but you've got to ferret through it, and by the time you find the good, you've wasted hours that you could have been walking with Jesus and studying the Word of God. And I'm gonna warn you now, everybody needs to hear me. All you young people, you better hear me. The more you scroll, the crazier you will feel. The more you sit there and do this, the more confused you will be. And some people, all you want to do is listen to Bible teachers and Bible preachers, and all of a sudden you found out they don't agree. So now you've listened to this guy or these guys a bunch of times. Now you heard what he said and you go, wait a minute, that sounds good too. He's got lots of Scripture. He's got lots of Scripture. I'm confused, which is exactly why Satan designed the Internet. You may not be looking at pornography, but you may be looking at ecclesiastical pornography, something to titillate your desires without a real commitment to the Scriptures. That's what I call it. And before you know it, you're all swept up with either the uncertainty of Calvinism or the insecurity of Arminianism. Did you hear the terms I used? You'll listen to the cessationists for a while, and then you'll listen to the continuists for a while. You know what that is? The cessationists say that the gifts of the Spirit died with the apostles. They don't operate today, and they've got lots of Scriptures. They say they do, but the continuationists say, oh no, God put the gifts in the church, and as long as the church is here, the gifts will operate, which is where I stand. And then you get confused about that, so you'll start looking at some of these other great scholars and theologians, and then they'll start discussing creation. You know all those pretty pictures that you scroll through, creation, and one will say, well, no, it wasn't seven literal 24-hour days.

It was epochs and eons and progressive. Did I say something wrong? Okay. Instead of it, God saying, and the evening and the morning were the first day, you define day as a billion years, and people go, oh, well, I never really thought about that. So now you're confused about the age of the earth. Well, if that's true, how old is the earth? Are we on a young earth, or are we on an old earth? Is the earth just six thousand years old, or is the earth six billion years old? Then you start trying to investigate the flood. Noah's flood, because this group says it was a local flood just for that region. It did not cover the whole earth, because there's not enough water in the clouds and in the sea and under the earth to cover the highest mountain, and you go, well, you know, that makes sense. How do you know that makes sense? You don't know how much water is anywhere, but then there are the others that say, no, it was global. God can do anything. God knows where all the water is, and the Bible says that when the flood covered the earth, it went 50 feet above the highest mountain. I believe that, but some people are confused, and if you get confused about that, you'll get confused about eschatology, last-day events, because there's a side that says everything Jesus prophesied in Matthew 24 has already happened. Oh yeah, he was talking about that generation only, and that when Titus destroyed Israel or Jerusalem in 70 AD, that was what Jesus was talking about. about, and it's all over. It's done. Everything else is allegory. Everything else is symbolism. Then you realize there's actually a group that believes that. They're called preterists. Who cares? Well, I must. I'm preaching about it right now. Preterists, they mean, they literally believe that everything Jesus prophesied and even the prophets happened in 70 AD or at that time, and all of a sudden you got a problem. Well, if that's true, if everything's symbolic, what about the rapture? I thought I believed in the rapture. But now this really smart group of people say, oh no, it's not what you thought. No, there's pre-tribulation rapture, and mid-tribulation rapture, and post-tribulation rapture, and pre-wrath rapture, and partial rapture. You know what all that means? I'm a pre-tribulation rapture guy myself. You won't ever convince me of

anything else. I've already studied the book. I've spent my whole, most of my whole life studying this book. There is only one rapture stance that makes sense, that's even logical, and that's the pre-tribulation rapture of the church. That before God pours out His wrath on this earth, He's going to remove those for whom He already paid the price, and I plan to be in that number. Partial rapture. What does that mean? Only those that are on fire for Jesus are going. Only those that are watching and waiting, they're going. The rest of us gonna be left behind. So what do you believe? You see, the problem is, once you start feeding on men's opinions, you're gonna stay confused, and that's why I said there's only one way to avoid confusion in your life, because everybody's got an opinion, but there's only one word, and I happen to believe that the Holy Spirit is the teacher, and the Holy Spirit has one opinion, and the Holy Spirit will guide you in one direction, and if you will seek and search for what the Holy Spirit is teaching, you won't have a problem, my friend. Pat, pastor, I want to learn. That's why I do all of that. I just want to learn. Let me learn you something here. I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened, that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe according to the working of the mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places. Let me keep on. Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age, but also in that which is to come, that He put all things under His feet and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. Can I just tell you something? Paul said, I know whom I have believed. Did you notice that? He didn't say, I know in whom I have believed. Paul said, what I believe is a man. Everything I believe is about the man Christ Jesus. It's not the peripheral

issues. It's not the religious stuff. I believe in the man, the crucified, buried, resurrected, coming again, Son of Man, Son of God. That's who my faith is in. Oh, say amen, somebody! Here's what Jesus said, Come to me, come to me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me I am gentle and lowly in heart and you will find rest for your souls for my yoke is easy and my burden is light. Alright? This is the one we are to learn. This is the basis until you learn Him all the other issues will distort you and confuse you. You've got to know Jesus personally. Hallelujah! I'm sorry I'm getting emotional but you can know Him for yourself. You don't have to listen to what professor so and so says about Him. You can listen to what the Holy Ghost says about Him and He says it about Him from this book. Let me go. Learn from me. So here's the first thing you learn and I know it sounds redundant. The first thing you learn is it's all about Jesus. Everything is all about Jesus. John 16 15. All things that the Father has are mine. Wow! I want to

read that again. All things the Father has are mine. Therefore I said to you I will take what is mine and give to you. I will give it to you. I will give it to you. Matthew 28 18. All power is given to me in heaven and earth. All authority all power all things belong to Jesus. This is what you'll learn. You'll learn that He owns everything and everybody. You'll learn that He made everything and everybody. That He possesses everything and everybody. You'll notice that Jesus is quite possessive. You can't say selfish. Selfish is only a human thing. There is no selfishness with God because God deserves for everything to come back to Him. Oh the depth of both the wisdom and knowledge of God how unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out for who has known the mind of the Lord to give Him counsel or who has first given to God and God must give it back for of Him through Him to Him are all things to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. Preacher you preachers preach that He wants all of you. He'll have all of you or none of you. I can't give up my whole life for Jesus. Then you will die and go to hell. Oh was I blunt again? I guess that'll Notice how possessive Jesus is. He said my Father is greater than them all.

He said my kingdom is not of this world. He said upon this rock I will build my church. How about this? My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations. How about this? My peace I leave with you. Or this? My joy I give to you. Hey how about this? My sheep know my voice. My sheep know my voice. How about this one? My blood is drink indeed. My flesh is food indeed. Or this one? Behold I'm coming again and my reward is with me. Or this one? In my name they shall cast out devils. They shall speak with new tongues. They shall lay hands on the sick and they shall recover in my name. So for all of you who are doing your best to eat the scraps of scrolling, let me remind you, the Bible declares in him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. You want some knowledge? It's in Jesus. Jesus can give you wisdom how to live this life as a Christian in a hostile world. Jesus can give you knowledge on how to be a good husband, a good wife, a good father, mother, a good business person. All the treasures, all are hidden in Christ. All it takes is a little digging, you see. I'm getting a little looser and I don't want to do that right now. All it takes is a little digging and I didn't say scrolling.

I said a little digging. If you will unearth the treasures of this book, you will be astonished at the wisdom that comes out of you at times and the knowledge that God gives to you all the time. That's what you know. That's the first thing you learn about Jesus. The next thing you learn about Jesus is he is our life. He's our life. I don't have another life. I don't have a church life and a secular life. I don't have a six day a week life and a Sunday morning life. I don't have a life I live at the shop or the dealership or the mill or any place of business and then have one here. No, he is our life. No question, no compromise, not a little bit of this left and Christ has most of it. No sir, you are either alive in Christ or you are dead in trespasses and sins. That's why Jesus said, and the world can't stand this and even lots of theologians grimace when these words are spoken. You must eat my flesh and drink my blood or you have no life in you. Jesus could not have been plainer, more elementary than that. Eating and drinking, that's what we understand. That's how we stay alive and Jesus said to all of those skeptics and there were many of them who were just hungry, looking. He said, well this is how it works with me. You come to me and you realize I am life and for you to have

life, you have to eat my flesh. Of course, the critics down through the ages have called Christianity a cannibalistic religion. That's foolish. I don't even answer that stuff anymore. It's just silly because I know what he means. I'm everything you need, he said, and if you eat my flesh, my flesh is meat indeed, food indeed, bread indeed. This is the bread that came down from heaven that a man may eat thereof and not die. He said to the Pharisees, your fathers ate manna in the wilderness and they're dead. But if you eat this bread, this flesh, you will never die. He said, you have to drink my blood too because life is in the blood, blood represents life, and when you drink my life, you live forever. And then these words, again, please bear with me. My sheep know my voice. Several years ago, Sandra and I and someone else, another couple, I don't remember who it was. I know we were in the mountains of North Carolina, and I know we'd gone to stay a couple of days, couple of nights, and I know the next morning we got up and went down to have breakfast, and we were sitting there talking, and when we got up after we paid the bill, a woman came straight over to me and pointed her finger at me. me I got really uneasy and she said I know that voice are you pastor Lorraine Livingston I said well yes ma'am I am she said I've never seen you in my life but I've been listening to you on the radio for years I know that voice and today I get to put a face with that voice and now I know who you are well well I just want to preach about a minute here about that I've never seen him

don't know what color he is don't know how tall he is don't know what sandal size he wears I don't know anything about him but I know that voice I've heard that voice and one of these days I'm gonna see him face to face and put the face with the voice hallelujah I know that voice I hear that voice a lot never really screams it just flirts and loves I know that voice and one of these days it could be today come Jesus come we've been waiting so long come Jesus come before I let you go can I tell you the next thing you'll learn when you come to Jesus he said you'll learn that I am meek and lowly now how many of us ever pray God make me meek and lowly make me gentle and obedient no we won't devil casting out power we want to hurry Jesus said if you come to me and learn about me you'll find out that I'm meek I'm humble I'm obedient I'm lowly I do nothing without my father's permission I say nothing that he doesn't give me I never act on my own when they slap me I turn the other cheek when they falsely accuse me I bless them when they crucify me I forgive them if you want to learn about Jesus you have to start praying for meekness gentleness lowliness father before we sing another note I want I want to bless your people Lord there are people who've come from Oh everywhere and our whole audience watching on screen right now my prayer is simple father teach us your ways and lead us in a plain path Lord would you deliver us from this need to scroll and would you cause us to take your word and simply get before you and say speak to me Lord your servant is listening Lord would you let every one of us yes even this week find how real you are how close you are would you do that Lord I ask it in the name of your risen son father and I pray it because your Holy Spirit gives me the unction to do that now Lord listen to us as we pray as we sing I should say what do you play whole church oh yes Oh Everybody, sing it to the Lord! All right, I want to do two things. You guys, that song you just sang, come up here and get ready to sing it. Then I want to pray for the choir to have a safe trip and a safe return. And then I want to say to somebody who may not know Jesus, or you may think you know Jesus, or you've got some bitterness in your life and it's killing you and everybody else, or the devil is offering you a morsel, trying to get you to forfeit God's best blessing.

If you feel so disposed to walk down front while we're singing, somebody will put an arm around you and pray for you if you want that. So Lord, I'm asking you now as these guys get in their vehicles and they travel four hours, that you will give them traveling mercies. Lord, I read in your word that angels are sent to minister to those who are the heirs of salvation. Protect, bless, and may that be a wonderful service tonight as that church I know will be edified in Jesus' name. Go ahead and sing it. Just listen. I wouldn't make it, yet I should give up.
