Preparation
Just as Jesus is preparing a place for us with Him, as His bride, we must be preparing ourselves for Him by having an active prayer life, knowing God's Word, doing righteous acts and avoiding evil.

We're about to receive from the ovens of glory. Let this waiter be up to the task of serving your precious people today. In Jesus' name I pray, amen. And why don't you just read with me before you're seated. I wanna go to Revelation chapter 19 and I'll begin with verse seven. Or we'll read those two verses seven and eight. Ready? It's not up there, is it? There it is. Let us be glad and rejoice and give him glory for the marriage of the Lamb has come and his wife has made herself ready. And to her and to her it was granted to be a raid in fine linen, clean and bright. For the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Everybody said amen. Smile at somebody on the way down. You might live beside him in heaven. Now in sequence, this 19th chapter that comes after Babylon, commercial Babylon, religious Babylon, all the wicked systems of the world have been put down, been destroyed. They exist no more. Heaven is rejoicing because Babylon has fallen. In heaven there was a loud voice of a great multitude saying, hallelujah, salvation and glory and honor and power belong to our God,
for true and righteous are his judgments, for he has judged the great harlot who corrupted the earth with her fornication and he has avenged on her the blood of his servants, shed by her. Again they said, hallelujah. Her smoke rises up forever. So there's rejoicing in heaven. Great rejoicing in the presence of God because this earthly system of religion and commercialism has been destroyed. All governments are done with now. Wow, all human government done away with now Let us be glad and rejoice and give him glory for the marriage of the lamb has come and his wife. See, not his bride, it's his wife, because the bride got married. That happened when the trumpet sounded and Jesus met the bride. That's us, the church in the clouds. I love it. I preach it often. I hope you remember it. We're going to meet him in the clouds. You see, the devil is the prince of the power of the air. The clouds is, that's his front yard. That's his throne room. The Lord said, "I'm going to insult Satan one more time before I cast him into hell. I want to meet my bride in the front yard of the devil. I want him to see all those that I redeemed by my precious blood, and then I'm going to take my bride on a honeymoon into glory for seven years." And that's what they're rejoicing about. The marriage of the lamb has come. We get married to Jesus in heaven. And you need to know this right now. You're engaged. Every one of us is engaged. God used the picture of marriage to try to illustrate his love and commitment to the bride. I am engaged to Jesus. We are betrothed to Jesus. But one day, the bridegroom is going to call us home and take us to a place. We will be married to him. And when we come back, we'll come back as his wife. Praise God. That's what this is. The marriage of the lamb has come. That's over. They're married. And his wife has made herself ready. Wow. And to her, it was granted to be a raid in fine linen, clean and bright for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. That's beautiful to me. His wife has made herself ready. The other, or a different way of saying
that is, his wife has prepared herself for him. Now, there's a lot in the Bible about, in fact, nice at the first service. I kind of wandered through the scriptures yesterday and looked at all the times that the word prepare or prepared or preparation is used. It's overwhelming. God's a busy God. He's preparing something all the time. Right now, he's preparing a table for you to sit and eat in the presence of your enemies. God's busy. So, I remembered that Jesus said in John chapter 14, don't let your heart be troubled. Believe in God. Believe also in me. In my father's house are many. Some of you like mansions. Some of you like dwelling places. Others like rooms. It doesn't matter to me. I'm going. In my father's house are many places. If it were not so, I would have told you. Now, listen to this. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go, I will come again and receive you unto myself that where I am, there you may be also. Let me tell you something. It's going to sound really strange to some of you. There's nothing in the universe that Jesus loves more than the church than his body. What about his father? Same thing. Let's don't get into semantics. Jesus loved us and gave himself for us that he might present unto himself a spotless bride. Oh, he wants to see his bride. Before he left, he prayed, "Father, I want them to be with me where I am. Wherever I am, I want my bride to be with me." So Jesus said to the disciples 2,000 years ago, "I'm going to prepare a place." Don't you think it's strange that he didn't say, "There's a place waiting on you, or I've got a place for you." He didn't say that. He said, "I'm going to leave now and go get it ready. I'm going to prepare it." And you heard this. Maybe the new Christians haven't, but many of you have. This is a man. on your honeymoon suite for 2,000 years. What kind of place must this be? Just think about it. Just take a moment. I'm talking about the heaven, the earth, the stars, and everything. Six days. But for 2,000 years, Jesus has been preparing a place for His bride. It's all about preparation. And then I read here in chapter 19, Jesus is preparing a place, but the bride is preparing to go to that place. Right now, you and I, the bride of Christ, the body of Christ, are in preparation. We are living lives preparing ourselves for what God has prepared for us. You don't just get saved and do nothing. Just go to church on the weekends. No, Christ saves you and you become a vessel of the Lord and you spend the remainder of your days on this earth preparing for heaven. Now, understand this. We're all betrothed to Christ. This is the whole process here. The Bible teaches us in an old oriental biblical kind of way how it used to be done. A man would fall in love with
a woman. He would go to the woman's father, put a dowry down. I want to marry her. She wants to marry him and officially she's engaged. And then he leaves for an undetermined amount of time to build a place for her to live. He's going to prepare a place. She doesn't know when it's going to be finished. He's just going to show up. There's going to be a lot of noise and a lot of rejoicing, but she has to stay ready. She keeps her clothes spotless and ironed and clean and packed and ready. She's always pulling back the curtain to see if this could be the time. Is it, will it be noon? Will it be midnight? We don't know. She just stays prepared, stays prepared and keeps on preparing. And what is that preparation? The Bible says it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen. For the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. All this is symbolic. He is saying you prepare yourself by living for Jesus. You prepare yourself. The bride of Christ prepares itself by walking in the truth, walking in obedience, separating oneself from all other lovers, all other attractions. She only has one on her mind. We've not seen him yet, but we heard him say, "If I go, I will come again." That biblical bride, that New Testament bride, as we say, doesn't know when he's coming. But as the days walk by, drag by, sometimes fly by, she's thinking this could be the day. And she just makes sure everything is in order clean and ready. See, that's what I'm trying to get you to understand today. We are not weekend warriors. We don't come in here and make a lot of noise on Sunday and clap and holler. I'm using my southern vernacular right here. Holler and carry on and make a lot of noise about Jesus and then walk out and live a life of worldliness and do all the things that the world is doing. No, we have committed ourselves. We are engaged to Jesus. We have no other love or lover. They've got nothing we want. Our hearts have already been bought and paid for, and there's me more than the sweet spirit of a risen Jesus Christ in my life. And so we spend our days preparing by doing righteous acts. There it is. We live righteously, we act righteously. We talk and conduct ourselves like righteous people, and the Bible calls that fine linen. That's how we're clothing ourselves for the big day when Jesus comes and takes us home. It's all about preparation. You never stop preparing.
And yet, I read warnings from Jesus, for example, in Matthew 25. Now I was in this very parable just a few months ago, but it just bears repeating. It's the parable of the five wise and the five foolish young ladies. I noticed something in there yesterday morning that I think I want to give to you today. So let me read it. In the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Keep in mind, lamps could be torches, anything that for a short period of time lights up the pathway. You know, his word is a lamp unto our feet, a light unto our path. Five of them were wise and five were foolish. Those who were foolish took their lamps or their torches. You see, all of them had lamps/torches that they had soaked in oil. And then those rags were lit, but they only lasted a little while. Keep that in mind. They all had torches. They all had lamps, those who were foolish took their lamps but took no oil with them. But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. See they didn't just have a torch, torches for now. They had a vessel, a container full of more oil. Because if this burns out, and he hasn't come back yet, you're going to need to resupply, you see. So they were wise because they prepared. They were prepared in case he didn't come soon. Listen to the preacher today, I'll try not to get out of control. He hasn't come back. He spent 2,000 years. You've got to have a fresh supply of the Holy Spirit. He didn't save you just to burn a little while and then give up. This is a lifetime commitment.
This is an eternal relationship. I don't know when Jesus is coming back, but I want to make sure that I have prepared. I got enough oil. I got enough prayer. I got enough Bible in me to last until the trumpet sounds. I don't want to give up. I don't want to run out. But while the bridegroom was delayed, there it is. That's where we are. He hasn't come. That's why the Bible says, "Don't be weary in well doing. You'll reap in due season if you don't give up." Oh, it's been a long time. But you know really in reality, I should say, it's just been a half a second in eternity. Jesus is coming, folks. Don't let the heart aches and the headaches get you down. He's coming. Wow, he was delayed. They all slumbered and slept. It happens. We get tired. And at midnight a cry was heard, "Behold, the bridegroom is coming. Go out to meet him." There you go. Then all those versions arose and trimmed their lamps. They lit their torches. They went to sleep and the torches went out. But when the cry was heard, they woke up and they trimmed. "Give us some of your oil for our lamps are going out." And the wise said, "I can't share my oil with you." See, what happened, the foolish ones did not prepare for the long run. And so when they woke
up, they had just enough to get them through the next moments of time and said, "We may need some more." And the wise ones said, "You'll have to go get your own. You can't live off mine." And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came and those who were ready. Hear me, those who were ready, those who had prepared went in with him to the wedding and the door was shut. Afterward, the other virgins came also and said, "Lord, open to us." But he answered and said, "Assuredly, I said to you, I don't know you. Listen, Church, I say it again, one day the door is going to shut. Can anybody hear me this morning? One day the door is going to slam shut. Today is the day we ought to get a fresh supply of oil. Watch, therefore, for you neither know the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming." Here we go. Here's where I make so many people uncomfortable. There are people sitting here and people watching there whose torches are about to go out. You didn't plan for the long run and you don't have a vessel. You have not prepared. See, the vessel, according to scripture, is my body. We're called vessels. If you remember one time I think it was Peter that referred to lives as the weaker vessel. That's not a demeaning thing. He was saying, "Container." Paul said we have this treasure, the treasure of Jesus in an earthen vessel, in a clay vessel, in a container. We contain the treasure of Jesus. It's in me and it's in us. The church is the container, the vessel of the truth and light of Almighty God. In fact, I have to read this to you from 2 Timothy. Paul says, "Nevertheless, the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal, the Lord knows those who are His." And let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity. Everybody that calls yourself a Christian, quit sinning, run from it, abstain from it, deny it. Don't be a part of it. If your conscience is smiting you, listen to it. If the Spirit is touching you, listen to the Spirit. If the Bible is instructing you, obey it. Everyone that calls himself a Christian let him depart from iniquity. No Christian wants to sin. No believer is living in sin. I'm getting all out of quack here now. I want to tell you something. Don't be deceived. Don't be fooled. If you're born again, you will hate sin. He goes on to say, "But in a great house, there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay, some for honor and some for dishonor. Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself." Oh, there's that admonition again. Clean, clean, clean, clean. Clean linen, righteous linen, cleanses himself from the latter. He will be a vessel of honor, sanctified, set apart, and useful for the master prepared for every good work. Oh, this is how it works. I say no to the word. "I have some works prepared for you to do." When I give myself to Jesus, He says, "I become
useful to the Master." When I fool around with the world and want what it is and what it has, I become useless for the Master. But God has prepared good works for you and me to do. What a powerful scripture that is. You and me, before time began, God prepared works for you to do, for me to do. And as I walk in the truth and obey the Word, I find myself doing those works. And that's how I'm preparing myself. Don't get me wrong now. You don't get to heaven by doing good things. I just have to make sure you understand that. We're saved by grace alone, through faith alone, by Christ alone. But there are things you do that verify Christ is in you. And there are things you don't do. There you go. Things you won't do. Things you hate that prove that Christ abides in you. So these five foolish gals had enough fire for the moment. They didn't have it for the long run. They could speak the language of the church, but they didn't have the life of Jesus. Did you hear that? Do you know how many people can tell you, give you the Roman road to salvation who aren't even saved? Do you know how many people sitting on pews can quote scripture who have not ever been born again? That's where it gets uncomfortable here. Pastor, sometimes you make me doubt my salvation. I want to tell you something. You can't make me doubt my salvation. Listen, if the devil can't make me doubt it, you sure can't make me doubt it. You know when you're saved. A saved person knows he's saved. Hey, you can talk about the moment he came into your life. You can talk about the miracle he performed when he opened your eyes, when he peeled back the scales, when he washed off the iniquity, when he put a new name on you, when he put a new life in you. That's what you can point to. You know when Jesus has saved you and neither a devil nor a doubter can make me question whether or not I'm saved. Save men somebody. Hallelujah to Jesus. They just didn't prepare. Slumber, got tired, and weary. You know, it also draws me back to Matthew chapter 13. You really ought to do a deep study in the parables of Jesus sometime. When again the seed and the sower of seeds and Jesus said some fell by the wayside, they never got saved. Some fell on stony ground, got no root, never got saved. Some of that seed fell and some of that plant started growing but it was choked. I preached it last Sunday, choked by the cares of this life for pleasure and the deceitfulness of riches. It choked the life out of people and they do not know salvation. That's an amazing thing to me. The Bible says in Romans Matthew 13, Jesus said, "These are people that believe for a while." And in the same parable out of Luke chapter 4, Jesus said, "These are those who believe,
but," I didn't mean, I'm sorry, it hit me, "these are people who believe, but in time of temptation, they fall away." When you are saved, the temptations can come. But you have enough spiritual strength to say no, you recognize where it's coming from. So do I have your attention? Can you hear what I'm saying? Jesus said, in any congregation or any group that names the name of Christ, some have not departed from iniquity, some will believe for a while, and some will believe until the right temptation comes along. Now the personal thing comes to me. Folks, I cannot tell you over all these years, how many people I have seen light of torch and have it go out. I cannot tell you how many people I have seen believe for a while. And I certainly can't tell you how many people I have seen around these altars involved in ministry in this church, but in a time of testing or temptation, the right temptation comes and they yield to it. Where are they? Maybe they are just baby Christians, no, you don't stay a baby Christian. And the Holy Spirit takes care of baby Christians. No, maybe they don't have the same idea about salvation as you do. There's only one idea about salvation. You confess your sins, you're washed in the blood of Jesus, you become a brand new creation in Christ Jesus, the old is gone, the new has come, you come out from among the world and all you want is Jesus. I have watched it for decades. If I were to sit down, just sit down and tell you this man, this woman, this family, old back at the old church in '79, back at the old church in '80 and '82 and '85 and then we came over here in '88 and in '90 and '92 and '98 and it goes on and on. People who walk through those doors, kneel in this altar, even sing in this choir, yes, even teach a class, but they are no longer walking with Jesus because they thought Christianity
was waving a torch. They didn't realize that you might have to wave it all your life and you might need an extra supply so you can't depend on today. You've got to prepare for tomorrow and you've got to be filled with the Holy Spirit every day of your life to own church. Here's what the Bible says, Noah preached on him last Sunday. When God spoke to him and told him to prepare an ark, Noah being warned of God of things not yet seen, prepared, prepared an ark, prepared an ark to the saving of His house. What I'm doing is telling you about things not yet seen. We haven't seen the Lord come back yet. We haven't seen tribulation yet. I'm telling you about things not yet seen but will be seen and until they do, we need to prepare an ark. He built for 120 years. Every day you get up, you say, "Do you have any days off?" They didn't have a Sabbath back then. Well, did it have any rain days? No. Noah just understood that God said, "I'm going to destroy this world," built an ark, and Noah said, "Where's the hammer?" And he started preparing right then, "Oh, I'm just a preacher, I'm just a pastor. I'm telling you things. it in government. I'm watching it in society. I read the other day that a volcano just off the course, a coast of California, a massive volcano underwater is about to explode, and when it does, it will send a thousand earthquakes throughout the United States. It's rumbling right now. Folks, it's happening. There's a drum roll. Jesus is saying, "Get ready! Get ready!" For in such an hour as you don't expect the Son of Man, it's coming back. And I don't care. I don't care how loud I have to preach. I don't care about what you think about my presentation. I'm a desperate man. I'm preaching to dying people. Get ready. You don't know when the Lord is coming back. Too many Christians are trying to live in both worlds.
Oh, yeah. You want the best of both worlds. You can't. Sorry. You can't have it. Jesus won't share himself with the world. Hey, Jesus says, "You've got to love me with all of your heart, your mind, your soul. If any man will come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me daily. And if you don't love me more than you love, houses, lands, father, mother, brother, sister, then you are not my disciple." Wow. Again now, I have to explain everything to everybody. He doesn't say you can't have any of these things. He said, "You can't love these things. You manage them for his glory and you realize he's put things in your hands." Yes. He's put things in your hands. He's put riches and opportunities in your hands prepared for his glory. You do it for his glory. So I just want to tell you something in case you're wondering about all this preparation Jesus is doing. Paul said, "I has not seen." You can finish it, can't you? "I has not seen. Ear has not heard. Neither has it entered into the heart of man. The things that God has prepared for them that love him." See, what I'm trying to do is preach something you can't understand. I don't even understand it. He said, "Mine cannot conceive of what God has prepared for them that love him." But God has revealed them unto us by his spirit. Here's the beautiful thing. His real wife, his wife has made herself ready. I want to say it again. You can only be saved by grace through faith. You know, really, we're all saved. We're already in God's mind completed. We're already sitting in a heavenly place, but we aren't home yet. So we live a life of preparation, preparation. And so if you really are saved, the things you do will verify the thing he's done inside of you. What do you want from me, Jesus? He says, "I want you to be holy, different from the world. I want you to come out from among the world and be separate. Pastor, are you telling us? Why? We feel weird. People think we're weird. Who cares? I can talk to you about weird. The world you live in is weird. The only normal thing is what's sitting up in here. But Pastor, God expects us to mix and mingle. You go ahead and do it. You walk around with a glass of whiskey in your hand and try to talk about your stocks and your bonds and your favorite team and in those silly social gatherings. about Jesus." You're not going to do that. No, you're just going to try to keep the business going and keep the contacts available. And you're not going to say anything at all because you don't want to be considered weird. But Jesus called us to be different, to be different. So I guess you can say, "At your age, pastor, you can do all that." You're a preacher anyway.
Nobody expects anything out of you. You expect, we expect you to be different. We have people that have parties in this church and they'll say, "Sometimes the sander of me, we'd invite you all, but we know you feel uncomfortable. There'll be some alcohol." We know you all feel uncomfortable. Well, I'm not coming anyway. I don't want time. I don't care about that. You know, there are some pastors I think I'm about to get into flesh. We'll see in just a minute. There are some pastors in town. They just like to be men about the town. They want to go to every gathering and they want to have a drink in their hand and talk to people and meet all the athletes and all the bankers and all the people. Preachers. Preachers. And I think to myself, you're sickening. Really, I mean that. Aren't you comfortable in that setting, pastor? Not at all. No, those aren't my peeps. You're my peeps. Well, couldn't you be an influence if you went and got in it? Bring them to church. Bring them in here and let them hear this choir rock and roll a little while. And watch some of you crazies lift your hands and shout, "Amen." Then let me get up here and get spittle all over my face telling you about Jesus. We'll see how much they won't Jesus then. But until then, I say, "We come out from among them and be separate," says God and touch not the unclean thing. He said, "Then I will accept you. Then I will reward you." And by the way, the Holy Spirit's not going to scare anybody away. He may amaze them. He may marvel. They may marvel. But when the Holy Spirit begins to move and they see the love of God in the church, it touches them. I don't have time to. I'm going to take time. I'm not going to give specifics, but we had a group here in the past. One was Jewish. They were visiting. Never been anything like this in their life. Jewish lady and some Catholic people, the whole group, they came for a particular reason. They sat, I'm not going to tell you where they sat. But you know, we had one of those services that day. And afterwards, I went down to meet everybody and I saw the Jewish lady. I said, "I guess this is really different for you." She said, "I don't get it, but I felt something in here." See? And we were acting like Spirit-filled people. She said, "I felt something in here." Now, who knows? A seed may have been planted that morning. She may turn out to believe in Yeshua. Who knows? And then the other family with tears said to me, "Now, we've never been in anything like this." The teenage daughter said, "But I loved it. I loved it." And that guy said, "My faith is renewed." When I see this and I see the love you people have,
my faith is renewed. Don't you ever sell the Holy Spirit short? The Sunday you bring your neighbor and I act like this? And you think, "Oh God, don't you sell the Holy Spirit short? He's able to save to the uttermost those that call on his name." Hey! You can't customize a sermon for somebody. You just need to let them feel the presence of the Holy Spirit and God will take care of the rest. Who said amen? We pray that today as you watch Pastor Livingston's message, you will be encouraged.
