It's Not About You - JJ Vasquez
- What's up? - Hello. - What's up? - Hello everybody. - Yeah. Hello, hello and welcome to Journey Church. - I am so excited. Maybe a little bit more excited than Julian. My name is Alex. - She has a reason why. - I get to be here with y'all. (laughing) I am one of your hosts. - My name is Julian and I get the honor of being one of your hosts in the honor of telling y'all why Alex is so excited. Let's talk about it. Alex had king of roof for dinner last night. - I sure did and I don't regret it and it was amazing. Don't sleep on it. Come on, high protein. - All right, it's hopping in the studio. Yeah, we are so excited to be with you today. Yeah, welcome to Journey Church. Let us know where you are watching from, how you are doing today because we are on week five. Week five of the "Can You See It" series and that series has been jumping too. It has been such an incredible series about dreaming again. - Yeah. - How's it been speaking to you? - Look, in every single moment,
every Sunday that I've showed up, I've been so raw and real and transparent with God, just bringing my prayers to Him every Sunday. He whips me in the shape. He shows me something that I'm missing. He lets me know something that I need to just keep in mind to move forward and he just shows me why he's so good. - I love God because clearly one of the things he showed you was to eat kangaroo. - That's crazy. (laughing) - I didn't know that was a thing, but no, I agree with you. Pastor JJ has been walking us through some incredible things. Last week on the "Can You See It" series was, what are you doing? All about obedience and will you actually take the next step? Because it's one thing to hear from God, but another thing entirely to actually obey Him and take the next step. - Yeah. - That's just been incredible for me. What about you? What have you been picking up from that? - Honestly, like really having that reminder of checking myself to make sure that when I am doing something for the Lord, it's not doing it from a place where I think I have to do it. Or I think that I'm required to do it,
but I do it because I love God that much. Because I do it because, you know, it's gonna make Him happy. Because being closer to God is truly where I wanna be. All of those things just have you served from a different place, loving people from a different place. It's just so amazing. And then to have people that you can chat about it, right, that y'all can check each other and be in that moment together, look at God. - That's so good. And that's really like the beauty of it all. You are in community. If you're here with us today, shout yourself out in the comments. Get talking to people. That's when really everything starts to shift is when you actually get plugged into the community. 'Cause then it's not just you and God. It's you and all the people holding you accountable with God. - Exactly. - Get in those comments, go on that app. People really do meet each other. I get to know so many people. I've prayed for so many people, especially in the app, write down, load the Journey Church app. - Yes. - It's where you need to be.
- Absolutely. One thing that I got from last week was so beautiful and that was I identified the lie. The enemy is sending a lie to your mind. And that's why we have to take every thought captive and make it obedient to what the word says about us. And that, once we do that, that ain't my word. That was God's word. You're best with JJ. - Come on, brother Julie. - He said that and I was like, that's one of the things where you just sink down in your seat. You're like, okay. - I hear you. - What are the lies that the enemy has been speaking to me that I've been actually believing 'cause we've all been guilty of it, I'm sure. - Exactly. - But yeah, it was a really good word and a really great series 'cause today is even more exciting. - Exactly. - It's gonna be a really great day. - It's gonna be awesome and we're gonna go ahead and send you down to our friend J.D. - J.D. - He's down there in the sanctuary waiting for y'all. He's gonna keep it moving, hopping, jumping to the next point. - Thank you so much.
My studio host, Alex and Julian, a pleasure. Thank you for keeping it hopping. As you were saying, throw some kangaroo emojis if there are even kangaroo emojis. Are they kangaroo emojis? Show us. Put some in the chat right now. My name is J.D. I have the honor and privilege of serving on the online team if we haven't met yet. Thank you for tuning in Journey Church Online. There's no better place to be this Sunday morning and we wanna thank you, not only for tuning in, but for also your generosity week after week, month after month. This church cannot continue to proceed to make Jesus accessible to anyone without you being the hands of feeding Jesus by contributing to Journey. So thank you so much for that. As well, as I stated, worship is about to begin. Worship is so important because it reminds us not only who to give praise to and who all blessings flow from, but it's to give God the honor which He just rightfully deserves. Worship is something that's not just, it's not just something just created just for the heck of it, just music and lyrics. Yes, that's a form of worship, but worship basically is to put God on. Who is God to you?
What might that look like to you? Is that your deliverer, your healer, your provider? They're the one that's within sustain, sustaining you every day of your life. And all of the above is true. So right now, prepare your heart, prepare your space for what God's gonna do. I'm gonna pray on behalf for everyone watching right now. And we thank you for tuning in. Join me in prayer right now. Father God, we come before you. We thank you for this Sunday. We thank you 'cause it's predestined. We thank you for what you're gonna do in everybody's space. Would that be at work? Would that be at home? Would that be in the car listening right now? We pray that they have an experience with you during this worship and that they put you first above everything else. I pray that you speak to them through the Word. And I pray that this be an encounter for someone that doesn't even know you, Father. I pray all these things in your precious son's name. Jesus, amen. Journey Church online. It is Sunday morning. The time to worship is now. Prepare your heart, prepare your space. Let's be blessed, John, peace.

They are the future leaders of ministry in this church and the world. What an incredible opportunity to be a part of that, I'm sure it's insane. I also wanna shout out something really cool happening here this week, it's called Her Story Night. If you're not familiar, her story is our women's ministry here at Journey Church. And I don't know a lot about it, but I hear it is incredible. It's happening on October 23rd, it's gonna be a night of fellowship, of worship, of prayer, and of women coming together as one under God. And it's just gonna be, I hear it's gonna be insane. They don't really tell us much, isn't it? But I hear it's gonna be a really good time. So if you're in the Central Florida area, make sure you come and check that out. - Look, talking about a good time. Time was had this weekend, okay? We had culture, conference, and the youth were having a blast, okay? We have an amazing video so that we can recap with you. You can check it out right now. (crowd chanting) - Then suddenly that came from heaven, a sound like a mighty rushing wind. God didn't send the sound to give them an experience. He sent them his spirit to make them a witness. How do you know that you've had an encounter with the Holy Spirit when you no longer want
to do the things you once did? How do you know when you've had an encounter with the Holy Spirit when you allow him to remove things out of you that you enjoy doing for a long time? We're asking that these moments of culture conference 2026 would not just stay in this room, but they would transcend this room and go into our high schools and our colleges and our homes and our relationships and our friendships on our jobs and that these would not just be moments, this would become a movement and this movement would spark a revival in Orlando and wherever city you've come from and beyond, we don't need another service. We need an encounter with the Holy Spirit. - Wow. - Didn't I tell y'all? - That's insane. - A time was head. - Okay, the Holy Spirit was moving. It is just so beautiful to see how the Lord moves in our young people in this new generation. So if you want to join us in making even more events like this possible, not just for the youth, but for everybody, go ahead and scan that QR code. Go to journeyoral.com/give and you can see all the ways that you can partner with us in doing so. - Absolutely, one of the things that I love about this house, I love God, I love the kingdom, I love it all. is that it's not just taglines, like that saying that Pastor JJ has been saying over the last couple of weeks, make Jesus accessible for generations, there's actual things that we are doing to do that. So it's really cool to be a part of that. And it's not over yet, y'all. It is just week five of the Can You See It series, but we're gonna continue with it in just a moment after worship. That's crazy. But in God's kingdom in the world, see in God's kingdom, my praise, hear me out, hear me out. My praise is the evidence of His power. I don't need the evidence. My praise is the evidence. So could you lift your praise today and say, God, I don't see but my praise is the evidence that you already did it. Come on, could you sing that out?
So could you sing that out, hear me out. My praise is the evidence that you already did it. Come on, could you sing that out? My praise is the evidence that you already did it. Come on, could you sing that out, hear me out. My praise is the evidence that you already did it. Come on, could you sing that out. My praise is the evidence that you already did it. Come on, could you sing that out. My praise is the evidence that you already did it. Come on, say, my body is a temple for all my life. I will be your best for this living country. Come on, could you sing that out. Take over, take over, take over. We thank you, Jesus. We thank you, God. Lord, thank you for being who we put our faces. You're the author and the perfection of our faith as we say and proclaim God. But we thank you for your presence. But we pray those dangerous prayers because only you can do what you can do. God, you're a miracle worker. In Jesus name we pray, amen, and amen. Come on, watch your turn to your neighbor before you take a seat and say, would you praise him? Would you praise him? Well, let's prepare our hearts for the Word as we take our seats. Ten years ago, we said yes to something we couldn't fully see. A church where Jesus would be accessible to anyone. We didn't know what God would do with that, yes. But God knew he saw the families that would be restored, the poor cared for, the marriages saved, the missionary sent, and the thousands of baptisms and lives. It's obvious to see now that God's hand has been with us the whole time. But it's just the beginning. That's right. As our church steps into a decade of ministry, we're grateful for all who sacrificed ten years ago to build what we're standing in now. And at the same time, we have to ask ourselves, what are we doing today that we'll be standing generations from now? What decisions are we making that will leave a lasting impact on Orlando and all who come after us? Ten years later, we're overwhelmed by God's goodness. Journey Church is now in three locations in an online campus and even in prisons. Church is happening in abandoned event centers and rent his schools just like day one. But now is the time to establish roots, invest in permanent spaces, and reach more communities because of the last ten years we're about making Jesus accessible to anyone. The next ten will be about making Jesus accessible for generations. And the next ten begins with the next three. Because over the next three years, we're going to be making a massive investment into the future of Journey Church for Orlando
and for generations to come. And that's why we're on this spiritual journey together. Not to ask, "Have you seen what God has done?" But to ask, "Can you see what God will do?" Because we can see more campuses opening across Orlando in neighborhood still waiting to be loved, not for our egos or our influence, but for the sake of reaching more people with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Because in order to make the local church effective, it has to be local. I can see kids and youth spaces built as a home where the next generation is introduced to God. And I can see those same students being called into ministry, becoming the pastors, worship leaders, and missionaries of tomorrow on a journey college campus. And I can see a church that never loses touch with people's pain, or with God's presence. A church that 100 years from now, God willing, is still here, still bold, still making Jesus accessible to anyone in Orlando and me on. This is our moment. This is our calling. The sacrifices that we make today, the prayers that we pray, that yes we say, right now, this moment. We believe God has more for Journey Church, more campuses, more presence, more power, and more Jesus, raising up a generation that will carry this further than we ever could. So we're asking you to dream with us, pray with us, build with us, because what God did in the last ten years was never the ceiling, it was the foundation. Journey Church, this is our time. This is our future. Can you see it? Come on, let's make some noise for Jesus this morning. Hey man. Hey, well, if we haven't had the opportunity to meet yet, my name is JJ, and alongside my wife Liz, we have the honor and privilege of serving Journey Church as its lead pastors. And if you didn't know that, you weren't paying attention to that video. Or you are a first-time guest, and if you are a first-time guest, I just want to let you know, if you're looking for a home church, I think you found it. Not only because when you walked into this room today, we're used to around it by the presence of God, but you are also surrounded by some of the most amazing, honest, open, and transparent people in all of Central Florida. Journey Church, you proved me right by putting your hands together and welcoming all of our first-time guests. One more time.
Keep it going for Journey Church online. What's up, online family? Keep it going for Journey East Orlando, meaning at University High School. Keep it going for Journey Kissimmee, meaning I get way high school, to finally help me welcome in all of those who are currently incarcerated, watching from jail cells and prison cells throughout the United States through the Panda Wap. We're so glad that you're with us. Well, I want to get straight into the message today. If you have your little "Can You See It?" book late here, you can turn to page 92. And if you are new to Journey Church today, and this is your first time here, we are in week five, or part five of a series. We are calling "Can You See It?" Yeah, and I'll help catch you up to where we are today. Essentially, we really have been revolving around the story of a man named Abraham, and this guy has got a lot of things. He's got a lot of money. He's got a lot of houses, got a lot of cars, got a lot of businesses and companies. He's doing pretty good, but the one thing he doesn't have in his life is a child, doesn't have legacy that's breaking his heart. And unfortunately, he's at the age now where it's seeming less and less likely. I don't know if there's anyone in the room today who had a dream or a vision of their life, and as you've gotten older, it just seems less and less likely. Sorry, I got distracted by this Patriots jersey in the front row. Whoever's seating people, we can't see Patriots fans in the front row. Yeah, anointing just leaves. It just gets sucked up by Patriots. Anyway, he's hit the lid. He's hit the lid, and God meets him in Genesis chapter 15. So if you're in the room today and you feel like you've hit the lid, you feel like this thing that you thought you were going to do in life can't do. And it's seemingly impossible. I just want to introduce you to our God, Genesis 15, 5, Abraham. Here's a word from God. Then the Lord took Abraham outside and said to him, took him outside, outside of what?
Outside of his tent, outside of his limits, outside of his lids, outside of the world that he thought he was living in where he was limited, pulls him out of it. And he says, look up into the sky and count the stars. Will you say these last three words with me, please? If you can, if you can, that's how many descendants would you have. Essentially, can you see it? Can you see what I see? And when you know that God's vision for your life is way better than your vision for your life. That's really what we've been talking about this last five weeks. Listen to me that God's vision for you is bigger than what you see for you and that no matter what you feel like the lid is on your life, it's time to see past the lid of your life, of my life, of our life, and of our church. And that's why I just want to remind you that at the end of this service today, and I'm going to preach a little abbreviated sermon because at the end of this message today, we're going to have a pledge moment that we've been talking about for the last five weeks where we are going to make a pledge towards a vision that God has given us, a financial pledge over 36 months, three years above and beyond our ties, a vision for what we believe God wants to do in Central Florida, six major vision projects that Journey Church is believing for. One is right here in Fern Park where we want to completely renovate this building that all glory to God we were able to purchase just this past January. We want to renovate it completely for our next generation, for our kids, our youth, and our college students. We also want to get a permanent location for our family. My kids asked me this morning, it's like, why is it so important to get those portable churches that are meeting in schools in permanent buildings? And I gave him an answer that made a lot of sense. He was like, oh yeah, that makes sense. 'Cause that means we go from doing ministry one day a week,
which is when we rent the building to seven days a week. It becomes an impact in that community all week long. And on top of that, we wanna launch a campus every year for the next three years. And so it's a big vision and we're given to that today and we're pumped about that. And the next Sunday, we're gonna have our vision offering Sunday where we're gonna give our first gift towards that pledge. I just wanna be brutally honest. We are believing for God to do something big. And we are believing here in our firm part location, construction is actually gonna begin, God willing at the end of the year. So the trucks are already on their way, but the resources have not arrived yet. So we need you next Sunday 'cause they'll come. And when they'll come, they'll be like, "You ready?" And we're gonna be like, "Yes, go to God, our church did it." And if not, we're just gonna be like, "Come back next week and we'll let you know what happened." 'Cause we're just believing God's gonna do something special. And here's what I know. Listen, here's what I know when we step out in faith. Whenever we step out in faith, we don't just learn something about God. We actually also learn something about ourselves. I've been following Jesus my whole life, and I'm gonna tell you some things I've learned about following Jesus.
Here's what I know. I know that Jesus is gonna provide for me. I know that Jesus is gonna provide for you. I know he does those things. I am so certain about that, but I'm gonna be honest. Here's what I'm less certain about. I'm less certain about what you and I will do once he provides 'cause sometimes we take his provision and we thank him, sometimes we take the provision and we make a God out of the provision and forget the one who provided us. Our response to his giving, our response to his blessings says more about us than it does about God. When Abraham finally gets his kid, God asks Abraham to lay down the kid that God gave him, and Abraham doesn't. And here's what I feel. The reason why Abraham did it and I wanna get into the message now is because Abraham realized something about himself in that moment. It's not about me. It's not about me. Genesis 22, 17. I want you to read along with me. The verse will pop up on the screen. This is after Abraham lays down his son and then God saves his son and now God is talking to Abraham.
He's saying, I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and through somebody say through and through your offspring, all nations on earth will be blessed because you have obeyed me. Here's what I love about this story. For the last seven chapters, Abraham has been waiting for his son. He hasn't gotten it. He finally gets it and then when he gets it, he finds out that the blessing that he received wasn't even for him. It was so that God could do something through him. He gets this son Isaac and then God tells Abraham, actually this and that you've been waiting for, I'm actually gonna bless the nations through Isaac. You thought Isaac was your blessing but I was blessing you so that I could bless them. All series long, I've been saying things like, can you see it? Can you believe it? Can you hear it? Will you do it? And let me just be honest, that's a whole lot of you for preaching. Because at church, it's really, we're here because of him and our folk
and we gotta be careful that I kinda get a little cringy sometimes in series like this 'cause what I don't want you to hear is, God wants the best of me, God wants the best of me, God wants the most of me, God wants me to be wealthy, God wants me to prosper, all those things, yes, but not to your end. This is the title of today's sermon and I actually had to rewrite it so that it could become more polite. And you would be encouraged and not discouraged. I just wanna talk to you about the topic. I believe this is God's message to you today. I love you and it's not about you. Why don't you tap your neighbors on 'em? I love you and it ain't about you. Some married people are like therapy right now, you just got therapy. Listen, you got the scholarship to get into the school that you couldn't afford. But the reason why you got that scholarship was so that you could have that career to make that money to be able to pay for other people's scholarships to go to schools that they can't afford. You see how that works? You finally retired, the IRA is packed, the 401(k) is packed, the 309s, I'm making stuff up. The 407s, the I-4s, they're all packed, you got it. But the reason why you're retired, ready,
is so that you can have time on your hand now to mentor the next generation in your local church. You thought it was about going on vacations and seeing the world. God's like, "Nah, I need you to get more time on your hand 'cause I got young people that need a word, that need advice, they need guidance, they need counsel." You made it to the league, bro. You won that chip, congratulations. so that you can point people to Him and give Him glory. I love you, God says. I wanna bless you, God says. I wanna multiply you, God says. And it's not about you. It's about what I wanna do through you. I think the eyes that God gave us is a great illustration of God-given vision that God gives us. Because if I look at the eyes that God gave us, I need the eyes that God gave me. God gave me these eyes so that I can see where I'm going. God gave me these eyes so that I can see the bullseye and aim for the bullseye. God gave me these eyes so that I can see people, so that I can see need, but has it ever occurred to you that the only thing I can see with these God-given eyes is myself, without the help of a mirror. It was almost as if God was saying, "Ready?" I gave you a vision, but a true God-given vision is never focused on me.
That's how you know if your dream comes from God. How are you the main character in your dream? Or do you see a dream that is so big that it encompasses your city? So big that it encompasses your nation. So big that it encompasses your world. That's how you know, 'cause it's not about you. Even Jesus, the guy who it really was about, really tried hard to make it out about Him. Matthew 14 verse 13, "When Jesus heard what had happened, what had happened, His cousin had just gotten decapitated. His cousin had just been executed. His cousin had just been murdered, John, and he's grieving. He's grieving the loss of a family member, but at the same time, he's thinking prophetically of his own end, his own future, his own time on the cross. And he's like, "Ah, that's gonna be me one day." So he's really going through it. The Bible says he needed to grieve, so he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Jesus is looking for some alone time. Come on, somebody, even Jesus needed a long time. Because I need some alone time, solitary place, but he doesn't get it. Verse 13 and 14, "Hearing of this, the crowds followed Him on foot from the towns. And when Jesus landed at His villa on the beach for some alone time, His whole church was waiting. His whole church was waiting. And you know what he did when Jesus landed
and saw the large crowd? He didn't send them home. When he landed and saw the large crowd, he didn't say, "I just need some meantime." When he landed and saw the large crowd, the Bible says he had compassion on them, and he healed their sick. Here's my first point if you're taking notes. He's hurting, he's grieving, but he's still ministering. Listen, your pain doesn't exempt you from your purpose. Your pain doesn't exempt you from your purpose. I don't think I've ever told this part of the story, but when my son passed away all those years ago, I went back to preaching three weeks after he died. That was quick. I was grieving, I was hurting, but I felt God asked me to preach, so I preached to my youth. I was a youth pastor at the time. While grieving, while hurting, and I've never preached in my life with less. Less energy. Less joy. Less strength. Less faith. Less hope. I was going through it. And I've never preached with more anointing. That sermon was anointed. I felt God on me,
like I like, 'cause this levels to this, like I felt God on me like, "Oh, I hadn't felt something in years." Why? Not 'cause I gave a lot, but because I gave all that I had. I gave what I had, and God used what I had to minister to people. I'm not saying you can't grieve. I'm just saying you can still be grieving and still be called. Paul wrote books of the Bible while in jail. John wrote the book of Revelations while in exile on the Island of Patmos. Jesus prayed, Father, forgive them for they know not what they do. Ministering, interceding, while nailed to a wooden cross, bleeding to death. Here's all I'm saying. You can't wait to be good to do good. Can't wait. You can't wait to have joy to make other people laugh. You can't wait to be rich, to be generous. You can't wait to be strong, to lift someone up. Sometimes you can't wait to be good, to do good. What you gotta do when God calls you to do it and trusts that he's gonna meet you in the meadow. He's gonna give you the strength, he's gonna give you the joy, he's gonna give you the resources.
You can't wait to be good, to do good. as evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place and it's already getting late. "Send the crowds away so that they can go to the villages "and buy themselves some food." Verse 16, Jesus said, "They don't need to go away. "You give them something to eat. "You feed them." Verse 17 and 18, "But we only got five loaves of bread "and two fish that they jacked from some little kid." (audience laughing) The Bible says, it's another book, it says it. Jesus said, "Bring it to me, bring it to me." Now don't go stealing to bring an offering to church. I'm just letting you know right now. You didn't hear me say that, bring them to me. Now here's what's crazy about that story. Jesus could have called down bread from heaven to feed the people. How do I know he could have done that? 'Cause he did it before. He did it in the book of Exodus when the people are walking through the desert and they're running out of food. The Bible says that manna fell from heaven. Bread delivered to the front of their doorsteps every single morning. That is the original door dash, was the Lord. Right there, from heaven. So they woke up full breakfast.
You didn't even have to make it. Pow, thank you Jesus. He could have done that 'cause he had done it before, but he didn't. Why did he ask the people to feed them when he could have called from heaven, ready? Because God delights in partnering with his people. It brings him pleasure to do this with you. With you, I remember I asked my son to help me fix something in the house. And all he did, all he did was stand there. He didn't even, I would say, give me a wrench, he would give me a screwdriver. I said, give me a screwdriver, he'd give me a hammer. He's, at the end, we go into the house and he goes, mom, dad and I fixed it. (congregation laughing) And as little as he did, it brought me so much pleasure for him, even his little part, to do it with him. Here's what I'm trying to tell you. It's not about what you have, it's about the parts you have. Someone say, I got a part. You got a part. I know it's a little early for a Christmas story, but I remember being a kid and trying out for my church's Christmas play. That's a big deal in churches. And I was trying out for the main part. And if you are familiar with the nativity story,
you would know that the main part is Joseph. Everybody wants to be Joseph. He doesn't get a lot of credit in the Bible, but he has a lot of words in the Christmas play. And I was like, I want to be Joseph. And I thought I had the inside track because my first name is Joseph, which is a mind-blowing thing for you to know to know not that the first J and JJ is Joseph, okay? It's Joseph, in case you're a wonder. And I tried out and I got my call back and the part that I ended up getting was Shepherd number three. (congregation laughing) Shepherd number three. And now, so sad, so mad. I thought I deserved it. I thought I did good in auditions. Turns out some other kid got it. I'm not trying to throw shade. He was the director's kid. (congregation laughing) You come to your own conclusions. I think I'm pretty good on stage, but apparently, Shepherd number three. (congregation laughing) And I remember being a Shepherd number, looking at my lines. I have one line. Look, the angels are here.
(congregation laughing) That's all I said, the whole play. (congregation laughing) I was so mad, so upset. Look, the angels are here, man. I thought, I want a bigger part. And then they hit me as I was going through practice. I'm glad I even have a part. I'm glad I don't even end this thing. Oh, and then another revelation hit me. Oh, and by the way, the main part ain't even Joseph. (congregation clapping) The main part is that little baby in the manger. And all of our other parts are just here to bring glory to the main part. Whether I am Shepherd number three, or whether I am Joseph. My job is never to bring attention to me. My job is to bring attention to the baby in the manger. So you've got to believe when my part came, look, there are the angels. (congregation laughing) With passion and fire. 'Cause my job was to give glory to Jesus. So I'm gonna do that with everything that I got. Let me just encourage all my Shepherd number threes out there. (congregation laughing) You don't need to be a preacher in a church to be a Shepherd in your small group.
(congregation clapping) You don't need to have a microphone to be a messenger. You don't have to be an influencer, to have influence. You take the little that you got and you look the angel. You just give it all that you got to God. 'Cause your job is not to be the star, it's to bring glory to God. Let me speak to the Josephs out there. It ain't about all the followers that you have on your social media account. It's about how you can use those followers to bring glory to God. It's not about all the companies that you own. It's about how you can use those companies to bring glory to God. It's not about all the money that you have. It's about how you can use that. ladder. I want to get the promotion. I want to get to the top of the ladder. No, you don't. You know what happens when you get to the top of the ladder? You realize there's nowhere else to go. I've spoken to so many CEOs, so many people who have money depressed and sad because they spend their whole life climbing and they get there and they go, now where? Now what? I'm trying to save you time. There's no joy up here. Stop spending your life trying to get here. There's no joy up here because then you get here and then you don't know where to go. You know what real joy is? Realizing that you're not trying to climb the ladder in life but according to the Bible, Jesus is the ladder. And ready and my joy is that I get to be a step on the ladder called Jesus to help other people get to Him. That's the one you know, if you climb this ladder towards Jesus, you go to a place that truly is endless. You go to a place that truly has no limits, a place where there really is joy. Let's continue with the story. As the story continues, Matthew chapter 14 verse 19 and he directed the people to sit down on the grass, taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven. He gave thanks and broke the loaves.
This is Jesus breaking them and he gave them to the disciples and the disciples gave them to the people. He gave them to who first and then the disciples gave them to who? It's important that you know that order because we're going to put ourselves in the story in just a second. You're going to see this like you had never seen this story before. In verse 20, then they all ate. Who's they? The people. And they were satisfied. Who's satisfied? The people. And then the disciples picked up 12 basketballs of broken pieces that were left over. Now, if you're not familiar with the Bible story or the Jesus people, does anybody know how many disciples there were? Yeah, there were 12 disciples. How many basketballs were there? So there's one basket full for every disciple, but that was at the end. In the beginning and the middle, it did not look like that because who fed the people? And the people are hungry? Yes or no? So if the people are hungry, you think the disciples are hungry? Yes. But they're not eating. They're serving. And I don't know how long it takes to feed 5,000. I just know breakfast takes us like an hour. We got four. So they are breaking bread, handing it out, breaking fish, handing it out, breaking back to 5,000 people, not including women and children. And the whole time their stomachs are rumbling. And they're like, oh God, God's being real generous with the people. God's being real, real blessing with the people. And as they're handing it, I wonder if there'll be anything? What do you think is going through their mind? Because the break keeps multiplying. So that means that every time they walk away from the basket, there's nothing left. And they come back and then there's something. So every time they walk away from the basket, they go, great, now for me. They give it and they come back and there's more and they go, yay, but then they go, oh, but they still haven't ate yet. And they keep breaking and they keep breaking and they keep breaking and they keep breaking. And then at the end, they find not only is there enough for each of them, but that's good for us. Here's my next point. It's not about you, but God will take care of you. Did you catch it? It's not about you, but God will take care of you. I remember, do you remember when the Jimmy Kimmel did that thing on TV where he was like, pretend, tell your kid that you ate their candy? For Halloween thing, hilarious. I would never do it to my kids, but past the list did it to our kids. She woke up one day, she said to the boys, she said, we ate all your candy. One of them was like, that's okay. Rosa, the other one was like, no, what? You do what? And then he was like, she was like, but aren't you glad that you shared with mommy? He was like, no, you should have got
your own candy. Little kid, just that Rosa. And we did, we're like, when do we break it to them that we did the candies out there? But instead of just giving them back to candy, I actually walked into the room where like two other bags of candy from Walmart. Because I still wanted them to believe, yes, at this point I'm just manipulating and deceiving my children, but I still wanted them to believe. I wanted them to believe that they really did share it because I wanted them to learn a bigger lesson. If daddy, if your father ever asks you to share, just know there's more coming. Does more coming? But I would not have shared if you did not share. Did the bread multiply? Yes or no? But the bread multiply because the bread broke, which means that if the bread stopped breaking, the bread would have stopped multiplying. is putting yourself in a position for a miracle. I know it feels like breaking. I know it feels like emptying. I know every time you come back to the basket, there's nothing left, and you've still got to give to other people. And you're like, when am I going to get my own basket? I don't know how it works, but I've lived this now for many years, and I promise you, and anybody who's been following Jesus for a long time can tell you there is more bread at the end of the basket than there was in the beginning. You just keep breaking. Just keep putting your hands in life in Jesus' hands. Let them break it. Let them break it. Let them break it. Let me get the next verse. And the number of people that ate with them was about 5,000 plus women and children. You know why you could be hurting, lacking, doubting, emptying, and still called? Here's my last point, because it's not about you.
It's about what God can do through you. 5,000 people, not including women and children, were blessed because people who had little gave all that they had, and God broke and multiplied. And not only were they taken care of, but a city was taken care of as well. Last week, before we did our pledge, today we had some leaders in our church gather, and they gave their pledge. And we had a camera, and some of them shared their stories. And I just want you to hear from them about what they were thinking, what they were seeing. God can do through them and through their little five lows and two fish, why don't you take a look at the stories. The local church is the hope of the world. What is going to change the world is Jesus' church, and it's been changing the world. God is truly moving here, 100%. I have found freedom coming to Germany. The Lord has renewed me, restored me, and broken a lot of strong homes in my life. My community at Jay Kids, they've truly changed my life. For me, God has just done so much in our lives. God got me through cancer. I just want to give back a portion, a small tiny portion of what He's given to me. Best financial advice I ever got in my life was to put God first in my family, to put God first in my finances, put God first in my-- and that was all the advice I needed,
knowing that if God is the head, man, everything else flows. My prayer has lately been, Lord, allow me to surrender daily, allow me to have open hands. What can I do right now to prepare for that future that God has for me? You know, God's going to do it anyways, right, and how awesome and beautiful it is that we get to partner up in that. The church is Jesus' plan. I think part of us, like, taking the sleep is to continue to see that growth. Something that I really, really want to see is 100 small groups turn into 200 small groups, and 200 small groups turn into 400 small groups. Really what's moving me in this specific moment for this pledge is making Jesus successful for the next generation. Just to think that there is some ability for these kids to go and start their own journey with God, close to their house, that's what really stands out to me. How cool is it to see kids worshiping the Lord? Imagine a journey church, like, right by them, that they could go to, they could build a whole church there. Imagine you, you're having Jesus, you're getting baptized, you're learning more about on, at this young age, it's such a blessing, yeah, I get to see it in small groups, I get to see it serving in the parking lot, and I see it every single Sunday. Seeing how the church has grown,
and what the church did in our lives, right, and renewed, restored is so many different areas of our life, you know, we would see that, and I would love to see that in the people. My sister passed away in 2017, and that was really hard for me to have loved to just see, you know, people that go and let her just be restored. - We love, because he first loved us. You didn't want him, he wanted you first, but he stole your heart, he sued you, changed you. Whatever you do tonight is a response to what he first did. - He's done so much, if I could just do a small amount, journey to which has changed my life. - Are you paying attention to what he's doing, and what he's speaking? Like, I just need you to know, we're all in. We're all in. - Amen. (audience applauding) I'm so moved. Sometimes when people invite friends to a service like this, where financial pledges are involved, they're like, "Oh, maybe I should've picked a different service." I'm like, "No, I always think these services are the best to invite friends, 'cause if you want to know what somebody really believes or really cares about, see what they do with their money. 'Cause that's when we get serious. Do you want to see two friends, not be friends anymore?
Somebody owes somebody money. Right, 'cause money is very close to our hearts. And when you see all those families on that screen, I want you to know, is because they realize that the greatest that they can give God is not their money. The greatest that you can ever give God is your life. And I love the story about the bread and the fish breaking in the hands of Jesus, 'cause sometimes life feels like that. Life feels like breaking, but I want you to know that in the hands of Jesus, what feels like breaking can be multiplying. God can take you and all of your littleness and all of your emptiness, even in your weakness, if you're blessed today, but your life, what's your life? You put your life in the hands of Jesus. I promise you, he's gonna do a miracle with it. He did a miracle with a little thing. He can do a miracle with you. Well, you're saying God can heal me, save me, deliver me, God can restore my sanity, God can restore my health. I'm saying more than that. Ready? I'm saying, and when he does all that, it won't even be about you. It'll be what he can do through you to reach thousands of others. So I finished service early today. So I don't want anybody leaving after this prayer,
but listen, if you're in this room today and you wanna give your life to Jesus Christ, when I say three, would you raise your right hand higher than the Lord? And just saying, that's me, I need to put my life in Jesus' hands today. I feel like a little, I feel broken, but I believe that just like that fish and bread, he can use me to do something special in this world and I want you to know he can. All over this room, if that's you, on three, all over our other campuses, on three, would you raise your right hand? So let the Lord know I'm here and I need you Jesus. One, two, three right now. Would you raise your right hand? I see you all the way in the corner. I see you in the top, bro. I see you here in the front, I see so many hands, so many hands, I see you guys. Praise the Lord, amen. You can put your hand down, let's all bow our heads. Let's pray this prayer out loud. Let's say, Father God, I'm putting my life, peace is in all in your hands. Jesus doing me what you did on that day. Break me, multiply me, not for me, before others. I give you my pain, I give you my past, and I receive your future. I receive your vision, I receive your will.
Today, Jesus, I make you the Lord and Savior of my life. And your name we pray, amen, and amen. Come on, put your hands together one more time and welcome everybody to the family of God. Now, like I said, I preached an abbreviated sermon 'cause for the next 10 minutes, we're gonna do something really special. First, if you made that decision to follow Jesus, and any of our campuses, you've got these little white stickers, white things on the back of your seat, you can tap it if you raise your hand with your phone and a website will pop up. Make sure you click on me to the decision to follow Jesus so Pastor can call and reach out to you. We're gonna go to our pledge moment right now. I'm gonna ask Pastor Liz to come up on stage and join me. And if you walked in today, you should have received a pledge card. They look just like this, they've got numbers on the back. They've got information on the front. They look like that on the screen. If you did not get one, would you raise your hand and somebody who is serving on our team will come and make sure that you do get one. We've got pledge cards and pens. We also have a digital form of this. And so that is on the card itself. You can scan it and you can flop this pledge digitally. I just wanna say really quickly about this pledge
'cause it's really important. We are at a crucial point in the history of our church. And what we really need to do today is for everyone to participate, even if the little you can do is a little. It's just a pledge today. We're gonna give our first gift next Sunday, but we want everyone a pledge. Even if it's a little, it's above our ties and offerings, which makes it a challenge. But it's something that we feel got in pressing on our heart to do. There are three levels of giving. I wanna instruct you on this. Three levels of giving. The first level of giving is giving what I can afford. And that get it, that makes sense. As you look at the numbers on that back, you go, "Hey, this is my budget, this is what I can do." And giving what you can afford is great. The only challenge with giving what you can afford is that it doesn't require any faith. Then the second level of giving is giving what you can sacrifice. What can I sacrifice? This is a little harder to do, 'cause you know that in order to not do this, there's some vacations you might not be able to take. There might be some things you might have to give up. And it's definitely hard.
And your faith is definitely expanding when you give it this level. But the third level of giving is, what can I trust God to do through me? This is a level of pledging where you go. In order for me to do this, God would have to do something significant in my life. And I know from my wife and I, whenever you look back at this card, and I want to encourage everyone to, if you have it, you can actually look at it. There are probably two numbers, as you look at the three-year total, that you're like, "My family lives within these two numbers." That lower number, I can afford, that another number would be a sacrifice, but somewhere in there, and I remember when I went to Liz, I said, "What number do you think we should give?" And she's like, "Whatever God tells you," I'm like, "That's no help, you're not helping." She's like, "Whatever, give the big one." I was like, "All right." I gave the top of the number that I thought we could do. And then, when I did that, I felt the Holy Spirit speak to me and he said, "But I don't want you to do what you think you can do. I want you to do what you think I can do." And I was like, so I saw the number above it, the trust number, I told that God, I love you, and I don't know that I can do that. And here's why, here's why. Because 10 years ago, we had already done that.
To start this church, we sold our home. We cashed on our retirement, money that we've been saving for years. We already gave the biggest offering of our life. And the number on the card was bigger than anything we'd ever given. And I told the Lord, I said, God, I don't think I can do it again. Let's be honest. Do you know what the Holy Spirit said back to me? He asked me this, he said, but would you do it again to see it again? If I could do in the next 10 years, what I did in the first 10, would you do it again? It's a yellow, we'll do it, we'll do it. So it was a big step of faith, but we're taking it, we're believing God to do it. And some people have been planning this pledge for the last couple of weeks. Other people, you're just maybe hearing about it today and you wanted a pledge. Here's what I want you to do, I'm ready, here's what I don't want you to do. I don't want you to give because I asked. I want you to pledge because God asked. So I'm going to have the worship team play. Again, we got plenty of time on the clock, you'll get out of here at the normal time you do. And I want you to take a minute, 60 seconds. And I want you to ask God as you're looking at this card, God, what do you want me to do? And here's what I'm saying is just do whatever God tells you, not what JJ tells you. Just do whatever God tells you and do that. And as the song is going on, my wife and I will fill out our card. We know what God told us to do and you can do that, that QR code on the bottom. You can fill it out digitally, it'll send you reminders, it's super simple. But why don't you take a second to pray, ask the Lord, make this a special faith stretching moment. Can you see it? And our worship team will lead us in a short song. [Music]
[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] I just want to take a second before we pray. Buckets are going to get passed in just a second and you'll be able to turn your pledge card in or you can just turn your pledge card in digitally. But while the buckets are being passed or before they do, I just want to say every dollar that you give to journey, listen, we have a great board of trustees, we have great accountability. I just want you to know that every dollar you give is going to go to where we say it's going. I know that sometimes that can be a challenge. I can trust God, can I trust the church? For the last 10 years, we've shown that we can be trustworthy. We said that God has told us to do what we've done. And I just want to give you that confidence. I believe God wants to do something in our city of Orlando. And we just need everyone to be a part of it in order to do it. So passing this is going to pray. And then the buckets are going to get passed right after she prays. Don't leave yet. I want to say one last thing. And then we're done. If we can all bow our heads and hold it. Grab your pledge card. Amen. Father God, we thank you for today. Thank you for this message Lord.
Thank you for the reminder that you give to us so that we can give back to others God. Lord so that we can be a vessel, be used by you God. So I just pray right now that those who are just on the edge, not sure God, that you spoke to them Lord. I just pray right now just like us when we were scared to give that scary offering God that they would have faith knowing. Even if that number seems impossible, you are the God of the impossible and you can do it. And I pray that they would step out in faith and you would open their eyes to see what you're going to be doing in their lives. God Lord, I just pray for this church. I pray for these people. I pray for all these sacrifices that have been made that people would know. We're making Jesus accessible to them Lord. We're making Jesus accessible to those that don't know you. So I just pray right now you would give us all the faith to step out so that we can see you do crazy and impossible things. We thank you and we ask you. I think your name we pray amen. Amen, amen. They're going to begin to pass the buckets and campuses you guys can take it from here. Why don't we worship the Lord while we pass the buckets? Yes sir, we'll be standing by.
